G 8 Summit to Be Held at Camp David Instead of Chicago

After much ado from the Occupy movement that it would be protesting the highly anticipated G-8 economic summit (originally meant to be held alongside the NATO Summit) this May in Chicago, the venue for G-8 has in fact been changed to Camp David instead.

According to The Chicago Tribune, White House confirmed the change in an official statement:

“In May, the United States looks forward to hosting the G-8 and NATO Summits. To facilitate a free-flowing discussion with our close G-8 partners, the president is inviting his fellow G-8 leaders to Camp David on May 18-19 for the G-8 Summit, which will address a broad range of economic, political and security issues.

“The president will then welcome NATO allies and partners to his hometown of Chicago for the NATO Summit on May 20-21, which will be the premier opportunity this year for the president to continue his efforts to strengthen NATO in order to ensure that the Atlantic Alliance remains the most successful  alliance in history, while charting the way forward in Afghanistan.”

Chicago police estimated that 2,000 to 10,000 Occupy demonstrators were anticipated to protest the G-8 summit, which could be the reason for such an unusual, last-minute change of venues.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, meanwhile, claims he is thrilled that the NATO Summit will still take place in Chicago as originally planned. His office put out a statement Monday saying he wished “President Obama and the other leaders well at the G8 meeting at Camp David and look forward to hosting the NATO Summit in Chicago.”

“Hosting the NATO Summit is a tremendous opportunity to showcase Chicago to the world and the world to Chicago and we are proud to host the 50 heads of state, foreign and defense ministers from the NATO and ISAF countries in our great city May 19-21,” the statement read.

Emanuel’s remarks, however, seem to dismiss a previous declaration featured on the G8-NATO Summit website (now cleansed of G8 references except for in its url) in which he asserts, “Chicago is a magnet for those who think big,“ and that ”there‘s no better place for leaders to find solutions to the world’s biggest challenges than right here in the President’s hometown.”

    Blaming the OWS movement solely is disingenuous at best for a change of venue. It just makes good sense to conduct the summit where crowd control will not be a problem.

    The G8 summits during the twenty-first century have inspired widespread debates, protests and demonstrations; and the two- or three-day event becomes more than the sum of its parts, elevating the participants, the issues and the venue as focal points for activist pressure.

    The Genoa Group of Eight Summit protest, from July 18 to July 22, 2001, was a dramatic protest, drawing an estimated 200,000 demonstrators. Dozens were hospitalized following clashes with police and night raids by security forces on two schools housing activists and independent journalists. People taken into custody after the raids have alleged severe abuse at the hands of police.

      I’m retired Active Duty Army, and for 15 years now. We on occasion had been called to do similar duties at gatherings where a large number of the crowd are expected to be active military, there are military displays, or for a variety of other reasons. None were to take on any part of the civilian population other than maybe protecting military property or personnel. These were identified as National Guard and can be used when called out by the Governor for assistance to the civil authorities. They were obviously not armed, even with night sticks or riot batons. They were directing traffic. The story itself sounded like an Alex Jones moment. I’m just not buying it.

      SOUPSANDWICH, Hey, I’ve walked patrol on Hay St plenty of times. Been on riding patrol with the Fayetteville PD a couple of times too. That was back in the late ’70s.
      RAZORHUNTERS, Thanks for understanding. Just wasn’t sure if I had communicated my thoughts without trying to say that you were wrong. I’m in my late 50s and my wife was standing over me telling me exactly how to put the trash can out on the highway at the time. I was just a bit more than annoyed at the moment.
      I read the site you posted and watched the videos with interest. In my opinion the author was trying to make something seem much more than it was.

    There’s a(n ininded?) consequence of this, too… Tampa was going to be watching Chicago because it the same crazies that come out for the G8 that will be protesting the RNC.

    Good change since it is a secure location but sucks for me. I live maybe 10 minutes drive from Camp David so my area will be on lockdown those days .,Plus it will be hard to sleep with the jets going over every night . Good location since no protestor will be able to get close, you cross the road there and you are greeted by the secret service quickly
