Why Trayvon Martin’s Bullet Wound Might Keep George Zimmerman Out of Jail

The Trayvon Martin case has been out of the news for a good amount of time.

That doesn‘t mean it’s gone. In fact, one of the more crucial phases of the controversial trial of George Zimmerman is currently underway: a phase known as “discovery,” in which evidence is shared between attorneys, including physical evidence, relevant paperwork, witness lists, etc.

And so far, the discovery process has seemed to favor Zimmerman’s side of the story almost entirely. Yesterday, the Blaze’s Madeleine Morgenstern reported that the injuries suffered by Trayvon Martin, when compared with the injuries suffered by George Zimmerman, could corroborate Zimmerman’s account that Martin was the aggressor in the case.

Today, evidence has been released surrounding the bullet wound Martin suffered, which experts are saying was fired at “intermediate range” – IE, from anywhere between 1-18 inches away:

The autopsy, conducted by the medical examiner in Volusia County, Fla., also showed that 17-year-old Martin had one small abrasion on his left ring finger below the knuckle, according to the news report. The report could back the account of George Zimmerman, the 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain accused of killing Martin, who has said he fired into Martin’s chest in self-defense as the youth was straddling and pummeling him.

The autopsy report was reviewed by NBC News, but not made available to the public. A spokesman for Volusia County, Fla., told Fox News the report was not made public and was leaked by someone other than the Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office. He noted attorneys for both Zimmerman and Martin had copies of it. He said the report will not be released while an active investigation of the Feb. 26 shooting remains underway.

Dr. Michael Baden, the former New York City medical examiner, said “intermediate” in such cases is defined as the muzzle of the gun being one to 18 inches away from the entry point when fired.

Why is this so significant? Because Zimmerman claims he shot Martin at close range, in self-defense against physical attacks from the teen. Now the autopsy is suggesting the shot was indeed made at close range, and given the asymmetry of injuries suffered by Martin vs Zimmerman, this further backs up Zimmerman’s blow by blow account of the incident. Is it still possible that Zimmerman shot too quickly, or not out of fear for his life? Yes. However, this evidence certainly makes that look less likely.

UPDATE: The Washington Post reports that evidence of marijuana was found in Trayvon Martin’s urine and blood. Depending on whether the weed was consumed close to Martin’s death, this may lend further credence to Zimmerman’s claim that Martin was “acting suspiciously” (smelling of weed will tend to make a person seem suspicious). There is also further evidence that Martin may have been the aggressor:

New witness accounts also emerged Thursday. A witness, whose name is redacted, told investigators he saw “a black male, wearing a dark colored hoodie,” on top of a white or Hispanic male who was yelling for help.

The witness, who was looking out the sliding glass door at his home about 30 feet away, said he saw the black male throwing punches “MMA (mixed martial arts) style.”

    Thugly got what Thugly deserved. To prosecute Zimmerman would be a waste of time, a waste of taxpayers money and a travesty of justice. If the Blacks need an excuse to burn their own neighborhoods let them.

      I watched Martin’s Facebook videos.

      He was wearing gold teeth and had tattoos.

      He also looked a little worn for his age.

      Drug use and crime was written all over him.

      Suspended from school due to drugs and possessing criminal tools.

      Drugs found in his system during the autopsy.

      Being limited by my high school education credentials, I surmise he was no good.

      LEXINGTON_GREEN, I hear you and have already seen it before. While deployed to the Mariel Boat Lift from Ft Bragg back in ‘80. After the so called Arther McDuffy ‘murder’ trial ended in an exoneration of the Homestead cops who were actually attacked by McDuffy and fought back. We stood on the 6th floor balcony of the Cutler Ridge Holiday Inn and watched the Liberty City area of Miami riots start fires that daily moved inward for a while. Florida had to alert it’s National Guard again only a short time after they had to get involved with the boat lift at first. Naturally, were were in the same uniform and driving the same Jeeps. Had to ship our Jeeps back to Bragg, and ride out to the Krome Ave sites in school buses and still one of our BN’s rental vehicles for admin use got shot up. I have a very good idea of what can happen after this trial. Have seen some of it before. I do pray that we don’t see any of that again…or there will be blood.

      I have seen the New Media prosecute many before the facts. This is America and we are to go by the law.
      What I have not seen before is the President and members of the House do this. That to me is the scary part. Holder should be doing his job and prosecuting those that did this.We know that won’t happen.I thought that the evidence and Courts were to up hold the rule of law, based on evidence.
      I for one want justice for all of the people that have been mugged and robbed and put in the Hospital and murdered because of this misconduct. They have had ruined and destroyed lives because of mob justice and paid hits put on people like Zimmerman and the innocent people who’s house address was tweeted. What about all of that not being discussed? This is like the reverse of racism, it is all wrong. Can’t we all just love each other and get along? We need to be smart enough to realize the manipulators are hard at work to divide good people by race, class, Religion and politics. United we all fall and divided we all stand. I for one plan to uphold our covenant with God, beg for our forgiveness to allow the lack of morals and removal of God, to work hard to fight for him to be brought back into everything in America and will no longer allow the evil force to win ever again or die trying.

      I agree with what you said about Mark Furman. Furman is a loser and a wash. Zimmerman did have training in order to carry. Contrary to Furman’s innuendo remarks about no one should carry unless they attend an academy only shows you that he is a far left lib who is against carry permits. He is the type of dirty cop who thinks that only an elect few are qualified to carry. I would rather be a Zimmerman and be alive than depend on the cops to help me. Cops only get there after your dead. Yes i do carry..

      I really don’t think it would be a waste of time at all. There is already more than enough evidence to back up Zimmerman’s story, and according to the law, so legally and morally he did nothing wrong. All of the hypocrites that jumped on the “justice for Trayvon” bandwagon need to be shown publicly how wrong they were/are. It’s just like Obama saying that the Cambridge police “acted stupidly” in arresting Henry Gates, Jr. for being belligerent. Of course, Obama would never admit to being wrong about anything, but you know.

      the more facts come out, the more it looks like Zimmy is getting off. Zimmers is to blame, but not entirely. I think he should get some punishment, simply for the fact he did start it. If not for anything else than to maybe ease tension. Getting off scott free and you’d have people bombing your house everyday. Sadly.

If he is innocent he should walk free.       I too listened to Mark Furman on his “opinion” of this case…he hasn’t gotten any smarter since OJ has he.,,,I was actually blown away about what he was saying…no way does the evidence and the whole incident suggest that Mr. Zimmerman was out to kill a black kid that night…Two lives were lost that night, Trayvons and George’s…he will be a hunted man from here on out, I’m afraid….especially if they find him not guilty.

      This is what an experienced detective concluded? Furman, apparently, can not detect the most basic facts although they were in the public forum with great regularity and intensity. Zimmerman did not appoint himself… he was appointed by his neighborhood-watch community. Zimmerman had firearm training. Martin was not acting suspiciously? Walking in the pouring rain between the houses is most certainly suspicious. Martin was so tired of being observed that he left the scene but returned after he rested himself? Even if Martin was rightfully annoyed with being observed, this did not give him the legal right to pummel Zimmerman’s head into the pavement… because observation is a harmless non-contact option… and a physical assault may be a precursor to premature death. Is this likely to backfire on Furman? Would anyone care to hire this detective after this ill-conceived, deliberate exposure of barefaced incompetence?

      The simple fact is this: Had Zimmerman let the police handle it; had Zimmerman not gotten out of his car on a rainy night and gone toward Martin…none of this would have happened. He was told to let the police handle it. HERE’S WHAT IS WRONG: Blacks have a warped notion of what White people think (most of us don’t even think of color at all) But the commies in the schools and the people trying to tear America apart have done a good job at spreading hatred. Whites had no idea that Blacks hated them so much. Black men sold their own into slavery, White men profited from it, NONE of those people are alive today. Republicans fought for CIVIL RIGHTS, not DEMS. DEMS are only interested in Buying Power/votes and keeping Black people dependent upon them. Republicans opened the first BLACK Universities, not Dems; Republicans pushed through the Civil Rights Bill. Phonies like GORE were not better than David Duke (who is, like George Wallace, just plain white trash) . SO I would like to see Zimmerman admit that he was way out of line by following Martin; that he never should have proceeded after the police told him not to. I‘d like to see Martin’s Parents acknowledge that perhaps the gun shot was in self-defense but there are two victims here (not counting the parents on both sides) I would love for this to be the start of REAL dialogue. We are all people. All GOD’S children and GOD knows, we’re only here for a tiny bit of time.

      So when they release Zimmerman because he shouldn‘t have been charged in the first place I wonder how many riots Barry’s Boys will be able to get going. They are going out of their way to get “civil unrest” going.
      These people have turned our country into a nightmare where justice is only for those they decide its for not for all and they have pretty much taken over every level of government during the years we weren’t paying attention.

      I don‘t see how this proves anyone’s innocence. There are several possible scenarios, one of them being that Martin punched Zimm in the face and knocked him to the ground. Z pulled out his gun, M started yelling for help (may have lunged at Z in a desperate attempt to disarm him — or not), and then Z shot him. That may not be what transpired, but it makes a helluva a lot more sense than Z’s story. If M had been on top, beating the cr@p out of Z, Z would be dead because those cries lasted for the longest time. Also, if Z was choking in his own blood, how was he even able to scream like that?

      Also, what about the psychological aspect? An adult male will not go into distress mode (cry out for help) when he is physically attacked, unless he’s a p*ssy, which Zimm clearly is not, or he doesn’t have a fighting chance. As a male you instinctively realize you can die unless you fight back, because the chances are slim that someone will want to help a male in distress (as was the case here). More than likely, the guy in distress mode was the one who ended up dead.

So what, they have pics of Zimmermans cut head, abrasions on his face, damage to Trayvon’s hand, and eye witness saying he saw the black man straddling the hispanic man, and beating him. Does anyone think that any of this actually matters one bit?

      This case was already decided, and no ammount of evidence will change a thing. The lib press, the DOJ, and the White House have decided this case, and the court will follow suit. They are not concerned with justice or truth, they are concerned with appeasment of the masses of welfare sucking, rap music listening, black folks in the hood (not the hard working decent black folks).

      It is going to be just like the OJ case. They fear the riots, so they ignore justice, and make the thugs happy with their decision. MR Z, needs to get ready for many years behind bars.

      Still, the question that I have not heard ask, “why was he in that neighborhood? Was he taking some sort of short cut? Was it just on the way? Being a private gated neighborhood it appears to me that it must have been out of his way, so why was he there? Casing future jobs, or maybe on a job. He certainly looked the part of a person that was up to no good regardless of his color.

      Notice how Furrman who is a failed cop at best does not refer to any evidence just talks about how an untrained person can’t know when something is suspicious. Well when you look at police shooting records from all over the country I would put Zimmermann’s judgement that … hmmmm getting my head bashed in is a threat to my life over a lot of cops that blow someone away because they make a sudden movement in thier directon.

As far as the thug comment. It is reflective of the ignorance that surrounds most of the comments here. A black kid in a hoody clearly is a thug. Particularly when he is packing Ice Tea and skittles. And if you want to consider the use of marijuana as an indicator, 60% of the kids in high school and college across the entire US are thugs. If you look at the events the only one who took action the resembles a thug was Zimmerman. The 28 year old who followed, confronted, initiated a conflict, shot and killed a 17 year old KID. For those of you who have kids, it is amazing you let your ideological bias overshadow the fact an unarmed KID minding his own business was killed. Walking down the sidewalk can in no way be construed as suspicious behavior. And Zimmerman would have had no indication of prior marijuana use from his car. The assertions in this and the prior report are what separates real journalists from blog instigators.

      The “kid” was a 17 year old street thug, smelling of pot, dressed in a hoodie, who uses martial arts karate to demolish a “rent a cop” volunteer neighborhood watch wanabe…who as the street thug is beating him unconscious, pulls his gun and shoots to get it to stop.

      Yea the rent a cop probably should have stayed in the car and not gotten into the confrontation…but he is “protecting” his neighborhood from the rash of crimes that have been committed during the past months by exactly this type of perp. He thought that he could control the situation…without any partner or backup which is exactly the problem that Newbie Amatures make. Yes he should have had COP pepper spray…which would have solved the problem…but the kid was huge, had a history of a juvie, and was high on pot and probably other stuff.

      Done time as a supervisor at a State school filled with these type of “kids.” These fools think that they are immortal and will get into gang fights at the drop of a hat.

      Bottom line is Zimmerman will walk…there is absolutely no case here…and the only reason it was brought by the state in the first place is to pander to the Black poverty pimps like Jackson….and Obama

      As a neighborhood watch captain, following and confronting someone who you believe is acting suspiciously is in no way inciting a conflict. See how that works both ways? If you’re walking through my neighborhood, and I don’t like the way you look, then I have every right to approach you and find out what you’re up to. That has never, and hopefully never will be, against the law. Furthermore, said action on my part dos NOT give you any right to attack me, even if I’m carrying a concealed weapon. Until I draw that weapon, you have no right to make it physical, no even if you can see the weapon.

      You weren’t there. You don’t know what the kid was doing. Maybe he was walking between houses, looking in windows.

      I wasn’t there. I don’t know what Zimmerman did. Maybe he approached with his pistol drawn yelling, “Freeze”.

      Until the facts and the results of the investigation are released, stop making your stupid assumptions and showing your bleeding heart liberal bias.

      Some of you people are so judgemental it is not even funny. I am a staunch conservative, Army Veteran and agree with the fact that Zimmerman did not racially profile Martin. But think about the kids family. They are heartbroken. Have some respect for his family. Regardless of his lifestyle, there are people who love him. So to say he is “no good” is wrong. Think of the prodigal son and how he was unworthy of his fathers help but still was welcomed with open arms. He wouldn’t receive another inheritance and made foolish decisions but he was loved and taken back in. The other brother who was responsible and good, was upset about it. But his father taught him a valuable lesson “It was ameet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.” Luke 15:32.       Let’s see what happens when all the evidence is presented. My point is that Zimm‘s story doesn’t wash. If we rely on the ONLY HARD EVIDENCE we have right now, the likelihood that Zimm was jumped from behind, or that Martin had a chance to mount him and pummel him are practically zero, and since Martin would have cried for help repeatedly, that suggests he knew he was going to die, and it was vengeance/extreme anger, not self-defense. Zimm knows this and that‘s why he’s lying.

      Another point, the cries do not change in intensity or pitch. They remain unchanged until a shot is heard. Then silence. If Zimm, who allegedly was in distress mode, had suddenly switched to fighting mode, the cries would have reflected that change in brain mode at the very end. They don’t. That is very telling.

      At IBELIEVER – I keep reading and waiting on people to realize the obvious and it is not popping up. The “Discovery” evidence is exonerating the original Feb 26th Sanford FL police investigation where the police (at the scene) take into custody the most obvious suspect, handcuff him, place him in a squad car, take him “down town” to police headquarters, interrogate him for several hours, photograph him, fingerprint him, yadda, yadda and then after ALL of that, let George Zimmerman go home and filed NO CHARGES! Is anyone not seeing that the original police work was the CORRECT or RIGHT police work from the very beginning in all of this??? The Sanford police department, from the very beginning, did in fact perform their “due-diligence” and perform their professional investigation and come to the correct conclusion and got this altercation RIGHT! AND THEN AL SHARPTON STEPPED IN! Then the president of the United States, many Congressmen and Senators chimed in and a criminal press took the airwaves and now one of the grandest messes in the history of this country is unfolding. Does anyone not see the Black racism occurring in almost every state now like the ONE case Bill OReiley has pointed out in Norfolk Virginia with mob’s yelling “justice for Trayvon”?       Why is it ( and why am I even asking this?) that all the MSM pictures of Martin were of someone who looked like a lovable 12 year old kid and the only pictures we saw of him was when he was wearing an innocent white hoodie… And then the fact comes out that he’s over 6 ft tall (pretty tall for a 12 year old) and the videos and pictures of him at the convenience store show him wearing a dark hoodie, hiding most of his identity?… And then there’s the pictures of Zimmerman… we were treated with pictures of an old mugshot.

      One eyewitness claims that she came out and saw Z straddling M, and M was FACE DOWN, dead, with a bullet wound to the chest.

      Martin seemed like a bad apple. Does that automatically exonerate Zimm? Z resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer on one occasion. Why isn‘t anyone here bringing up Z’s criminal record? The truth is this has become a race issue and Z — who is not even white — probably won’t get a fair trial. So you are all rushing to his defense.

      First, not necessarily brutally, but showing no regard for human life. IMO, second-degree murder will be considerably harder to prove in this case than manslaughter. But I am not a lawyer, or out to get whitey like the special prosecutor appointed to this case.

      I’m not saying Zimm has to prove he is innocent. Casey Anthony clearly lied AND was guilty as sin, yet the jury didn’t convict her, so who knows. Like you say, the prosecution has to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. All I‘m saying is that I don’t believe Zimm‘s story so I won’t defend him, although I do believe he has a right to a fair trial.

      Don’t fool yourself, it starts early in families like that. That sweet smiling 12-year old with light in his eyes was probably calling young girls “bitches or ho’s” and touching them in places he should be.
      My family has spent time with kids from bad home, taking them places they would never have gone to otherwise, trying to broaden their horizons, trying to teach them right from wrong, but their parents always won in the end and those kids almost always ended up in trouble for drugs or something else.

If indeed Trayvon was committing a bonafide crime, the police would have properly assessed it and arrested him. He did NOT deserve to lose his precious life.       Martin was walking home holding Skittles while talking to his girlfriend, unarmed, and noticed a guy starting at him to the point that he voiced concern to his girlfriend, but continued to walk home, not run as fast as he could like his girlfriend advised. Besides, why should he? He’s just walking home.
      The guy who was starting, no big deal…just starting, who called the cops which whom directed him to stay in his house and they have got it…left his house, against police direction, chased down the unarmed kid 5 blocks, while being told AGAIN by the police to NOT FOLLOW and go back inside…while carrying a gun…ends up shooting the kid. He claimed he was attacked. Let’s face it. He chased down an unarmed kid 5 blocks against two different and clear directions from the police against it, got his ass whipped…probably by the kid who was scared the guy he was worried about before chased him down with a freaking gun 5 blocks, and was so much of a p$ssy that he shot him.
      And you…..defend it.
      Nothing you can say can push anything beyond race in this case. Black guy, white kid. You’d be in the streets. Take out the color in this, and nobody could defend that actions of Zimmerman. Add the color…he has a conservative army of bigots at his side, sending him money.
      No…instead, you display your entire lack of integrity.

      What do I say? I say that Zimmerman ran after a young man who thought he was running from a guy who was stalking him. Zimmerman provoked Martin to fear; Martin reacted as many teen aged boys would have: he decided to pre-emptively attack. Zimmerman should have used common sense and never followed him to begin with; even the police at the scene thought this. He will be found guilty of manslaughter.

      @TEXASBETA – your fantasy world is impressive. Trayvon left his dad‘s girlfriend’s place at 5:30 pm, more than 110 minutes before his girlfriend called, to walk 3/4′s of a mile to the 7-11. It would take about 10-12 minutes to make that walk. There’s no register receipt for 7-11, so it looks like our boy stole the Skittles and Tea sometime before 6:00 pm, according to video at the store. What do you think he was doing between 6:00 pm and 7:12 pm, when his girlfriend called him? Why did it take him over an hour to make that 10-12 minute walk home to bring treats to his sugar-starved little brother? Why was he seen walking around the buildings and not on the sidewalk? Unless you’re stupid or a willing dupe, you know he was casing condos for future burglaries. Don’t live in that fantasy life just to feel superior to others…because you look like a fool.

    Am I the only one getting a quesy feeling that the gov’t is using this case to send a message to gun owners – If you don’t obey law enforcement when they tell you to act like a sheep, you WILL be prosecuted?

    I’ve reserved judgement on this case, but it’s becoming pretty clear that this guy is not guilty of murder and even manslaughter looks really, really thin.

      Zimmerman probably thought he was just doing his job by following Martin–contrary to what some have said, he was not “stalking” him. Nevertheless, he was not a law enforcement professional; once he’d called to report Martin and been told not to follow him, he would clearly have been well advised to sit tight and wait for the police. By the time he broke off and turned around, Martin was aware of him and most likely felt threatened–it’s possible there had been some exchange of words between them that has not yet come to light.

      All the evidence suggests that Martin was the one who started the actual physical confrontation, jumping Zimmerman from behind, and that it was Zimmerman who sustained the most serious injuries, other than the one from the bullet he fired in self-defense. This is a complicated story and I don’t see what is to be gained either by calling Zimmerman a “white race profiler” rather than an overzealous community defender, or Martin a “thug” rather than a pretty normal teenager with an exaggerated sense of his own macho. Do you disagree?

      Zimmerman’s problem is that he was only 12.5% black & Trayvon was 90+% black. Zimmerman needed to be 50% black or more to avoid the race hustlers.

      WALKABOUT, My take on the media’s involvement is that they were simply lazy. The story itself remained local for some time until Martin’s parents raised a ruckus and starting gaining attention. Since there are virtually no investigative journalist now, and mostly only sensationalist. The national media merely caught the name Zimmerman and assumed that he was pure vanilla white, and reported the case only in there own slanted view. My belief is that in the current left wing view of things, the media likely hoped and prayed that somebody with the name Zimmerman was also Jewish. They didn’t even discover that he was Hispanic until well into reporting feeding frenzy. Now dedicated to their story, they began to call him a white Hispanic. The media is the biggest culprit for what will happen after the trial is over.

      WALKABOUT…..Good article…..something doesn’t add up though…..The article basically says that the media and authorities are sweeping under the rug all of the black on white hate crime so as to not perpetuate the race war, and yet if it is the other way around (white on black) race baiting is fomented??? It is like they want the race war to exist, but only one direction…..I think DEUT28:43 has something to do with it.

      The real issue here is – Did a precious creation of God deserve to lose his life? IF Zimmerman had allowed the police to handle the situation (THEY WERE ALREADY ON THEIR WAY TO THE SCENE!!!), a life that was valuable to God did NOT have to be lost. IF Zimmerman had not defied the directive of the 911 dispatcher to NOT take the matter into his own hands, Trayvon would still be alive. IF Trayvon was caught actually committing some type of crime (is it a crime to walk between houses on a rainy night?), the police should have been the ones to properly assess it. In the 911 tape, right off the bat, Zimmerman said that Trayvon “ran away.” So, if this were the case, what happened that the two ended up together in the final, tragic incident that led to someone’s life being ended? Again, IF Trayvon was actually in the process of committing a REAL CRIME, he should have been arrested by the police but he DID NOT HAVE TO LOSE HIS LIFE!!! And if you think inappropriate behavior (drugs, swearing, etc.) proves that you’re automatically guilty in an unrelated incident, then let’s investigate a huge chunk of the American population, young and old, who are guilty of these behaviors too. Do they all deserve to lose their lives?

      For the record, I don’t think Zimmerman is guilty of murder. I expect him to be acquitted, and to be interviewed on Hannity and GBTV within a year.

    The prosecution has set themselves up for a failure here. They want a second-degree murder conviction, and all the evidence is already showing that they will not convict him, and anything OTHER than a murder conviction is going to cause riots.       Totally agree that Murder 2 is not possible. Zimmerman obvioulsy did not premeditate the act. Manslaughter, perhaps, but not murder.

Once Zimmerman is acquitted, he should sue the media, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and a couple of congressman and senators…and of course they all are liberal dems.     Get ready for an onslaught of media attacks dismissing the new facts that have come out during discovery. I heard Trayvons family attorney (still don’t understand the need for an attorney, but that’s another story) say this proves Trayvon was attacked by Zimmerman, and that he was fighting back….thus, the reason for cuts and scrapes on his fingers / knuckles.

    George Zimmerman should be a free man, all charges should be dropped, and he should be going after NBC and Al Sharpton personally for defamation.
