There have been plenty of magazine cover controversy over the last year. There was Michele Bachmann’s Newsweek cover, the other recent Newsweek cover story on Obama’s “dumb” critics, and now Mitt Romney is the center of a one involving Bloomberg Businessweek.
It focuses on a rejected (I repeat: rejected) cover showing a bloodied, bruised, and beaten-up Romney:
That’s certainly eye-catching. But why didn’t the cover ever run? Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel explained in an email to Buzzfeed that the magazine usually prepares several covers for an issue and decides on the the one that best fits the “way the zeitgeist is blowing:”
Each week we design a few cover possibilities for the upcoming issue. We see where the news is going and make a final decision about the image on Wednesday afternoon. Two weeks ago (January 16 issue, on stands January 13) we had two great pieces in the magazine: Ashlee Vance’s profile of Steve Ballmer and his efforts to reboot Microsoft, and Peter Coy’s Opening Remarks about how the GOP had turned on Mitt Romney and Private Equity. In the end,we went with Ballmer since the Romney story seemed to have already hit its peak. A lot of times these decisions are about all of us putting our finger in the air and trying to figure out which way the zeitgeist is blowing. It’s what makes the job so fun and so challenging.
So if it was rejected, how did it make it out into the public? Well, Bloomberg designer Richard Turley tweeted the image out (in response to a NY Mag cover):
What do you think of it?

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 1:00pmThe truth is that most media sources, are mouthpieces for Obama’s reelection campaign. From day one, Obama has hoped Romney would win; since he is the easiest to beat (regardless of the unsubstantiated garbage spew by the GOP Establishment). In turn, the Media had no problem destroying Bachmann and Perry, while only levying occasional, cursory shots at Romney.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 1:19pmYou kidding? The Dems are not attacking Newt , it’s Mitt. 600k from the unions and the DNC is running ads against Mitt. Newt has more holes in him than Sponge Bob Square Pants. Mitt has unions Obama Santorum , Gingrich , Sarah Palin , Hannity , evangelicals , people who hate Mormons , and a Las Vegas millionaire who are against him. Mitt is the only candidate that can help my 401k.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 1:22pmReally? Why, then, are the Unions dumping money into the Gingrich campaign and the DNC party send up a collective cheer when he won SC? And the media negatively reporting on Romney at 72%. (Gingrich’s negative reporting is at 52%.)

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 2:00pmYeah – the media is a mouthpiece for Romney….SUUUURE…just as they keep throwing around Mitch Daniels, Jeb Bush and facilitate the moronic personally destructive debates for the leaderless to shred each other. I firmly believe the whole manipulation is all about keeping the republicans fractured to the point of no return. One of these guys has got to quit tap dancing (no…not Ron Paul for you PaulBots) and seize the discussion versus being led. Are any of them capable?
Report Post »Further – we should all be pi$$ed off and tune out the noise of any other late entry candidate.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 2:24pmIt never ceases to amaze me that people will put up Newt as a conservative and ignore his less than conservative morality. As far as Romney not being able to beat Obama, I respectfully disagree. Yes, Romney is not a hard-line ultra right wing conservative. Neither are most of the people in the U.S. We need a candidate that the majority of the U.S. can get behind. The more you keep pushing for a ‘true conservative”, the less likely we will remove Obama. This election will hinge upon the independent and moderate republican and democrat vote. The hard-liners on either side will not make the difference. If the GOP candidate can appeal to independents and moderates alike, he will beat Obama hands down. If instead the only group he can pull is right wing conservatives, we ARE doomed. Keep rootin for Newt if that is what you want, cause there ‘aint an independent that I know willing to put Newt in charge of the purse strings of this nation.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 5:02pmLimbaugh listeners tend to just parrot what he says, even if it has no basis in truth. Almost every day for the past 3 months Rush has claimed that the media wants Romney, Obama wants Romney, and the Republican establishment wants Romney.
Meanwhile, the Rush Limbaugh program has been reduced to the 3-hour Gingrich campaign block.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 10:23amYEP! the so called “Business Magazines” are all, for the most part, towing the liberal rope. The exception would be Forbes.
Odummer is running scared. Running scared of Gingrich and will do anything in his power to encourage Mitt’s election. Odummer knows that RINO Mitt would never be able to stand up against his leftist onslaught so he is encourageing the press to glorify Romney in every way possible.
Is Newt perfect? Not by any means. Newt has the guts, cojones and chutzpa to fight Odummer in the trenches. He will make Odummer sweat bullets! He will be unfraid to go toe to toe and call out and expose the entire leftist, elitest agenda. This is something that Mitt hasn’t got the personality to do. Mitt would play “Mr. Nice Guy”, exactly what Obummer wants!

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 9:17amMaybe the GOP woke up to the fact that they want Obama out in 2012 and they made a stupid mistake picking a candidate that could not even beat their last candidate McCain in a primary . Remember that got McCain clobbered by Obama in the general. It don’t take a rocket scientist to figure out Romney cannot beat Obama. We need a real conservative like Newt who can articulate conservative values, not another liberal like John McCain. Romney is as bad if not worse than John McCain. McCain endorse Romney! Wake up people! Newt has admitted he has made mistakes and has failed His Lord and had to seek forgiveness and reconciliation from God. I haven’t heard anything like that from Romney, why, he don’t think he has any sin! Jesus said if we think we have no sin, our sin remains!

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:34pmIf Newt is so sinless and remorseful why does he always stand behind deflection tactics. He calls his 2nd wife a liar on national TV the same day he says he is not going say anything against her. He always abuses his grand children by playing the good ol’ grandpa card anytime adultery comes up. His words that the American public only care what he says not what he does reinforce his arrogance and self conceit. His immorality is only constrained by his old age and couch episodes with Nancy. When he screamed foul and pointed the finger at CNN I knew the guy was lying, it is typical of any guilty person. Redirecting the attention on the wicked media after all it was is patriotism that led him to the two affairs. SC blew it big time with buying into his rants and name calling. He is an progressive pig that is going to give Obama the WhiteHouse.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 7:47pm@GaryM – maybe you haven’t heard anything like that from Romney because he is still married to his FIRST wife, and never had a problem with 3 ‘somewhat overlapping marriages’ as Jon Stewart puts it. Has Romney ever sinned? Of course! We all have fallen short in keeping His word. However, to judge Romney as worse than Gingrich because you have not heard him confess his ‘sins’ or claim to be ‘reborn’ is about the lamest thing I have read here today. I am sure Romney isn’t perfect, but he sure as heck LIVES a life of Christian values instead of just claiming to like Newt. Once old Newt pulled the deflection card and refused to answer for his behavior during the debate and turned the blame onto the media for daring to confront him on his behavior, he showed his true colors as one who is not honestly repentant.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 9:16amI think its a perfect example how the way-too-powerful media try to color, influence and direct an election. We have vested far too much credibility into a group of people who we had hoped were simply REPORTING the news and who are now, in fact, driving it to meet their own desired outcome. They have become the puppet masters and we are worse off because of what they have become in our society.
