Why Were Pastors ‘Laying Hands’ on Rick Santorum in TX?

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum stopped in McKinney, Texas, earlier today, where he met with evangelical faith leaders. During their time together, the pastors and congregants “laid hands on” the candidate and prayed for him, as can be seen in the below image:

Pastors Lay Hands on Rick Santorum in McKinney, Texas

Pastors praying around GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum

Santorum, a Catholic, is said to have performed very well among evangelical Christians in these three states. His conservative views on gay marriage, abortion and a multitude of other issues, make him a prime candidate for more right-leaning, socially-conservative voters. The New York Times reports:

All three states that held contests Tuesday have very conservative Republican electorates that are believed to include large numbers of the sort of evangelicals and Tea Party adherents who had flocked to Mr. Santorum’s candidacy in Iowa. It was a turnabout from four years ago, when Mr. Romney won in Colorado and Minnesota as the so-called conservative alternative to the man who became the Republican nominee in 2008, Senator John McCain.

So it seems Santorum may be capturing the attention of Christians and their leaders. When it comes to his meeting with pastors, some who fall outside of the Christian realm may have been confused to see Santorum standing with his head bowed surrounded by numerous pastors with outstretched hands on his shoulders.

This practice, known as the “laying on of hands,” is a form of worship during which numerous believers come around an individual and offer up prayers for him or her. The significance is both symbolic and literal, as the Holy Spirit and blessing are sought for the subject of the group prayer.

Below, see a CNN video that shows this:

The conservative contender will be making a number of stops in the Lone Star State, as he seeks out support following well-publicized victories in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.

The Laying on of Hands has great significance as a Covenant Rite in the Bible. This is the method used to bestow a special Divine blessing or a special form of recognition. It can be a formal family/public announcement or blessing relating to a point of honor, or a special spiritual request. Even if there is no audience, the Angels are watching and recording.

laying on of hands is Biblica. Nothing magical or spookey about it., You have Bible smart, real deal Christain men pray for you while putting a hand on your shoulder or head or back. No reason to get excited

Funny how the MSM will get all worked up over some Christian praying for each other, but they see nothing wrong with OWS folks having group sex.

It’s disappointing that the “laying on of hands” has to be explained as if it were some weird ritual. Lifting others up in prayer should be common practice. We are strengthened when our brothers and sisters in Christ intercede on our behalf. God bless Rick Santorum, and anyone else bold enough to profess their faith and stand firm in the face of ridicule and persecution.

Know any running? ‘Cause I don’t. Better get active, we all better get busy. I hope he wins because my letters alone are going to give him & his administration headaches when I start demanding they turn it around & start eliminating waste. I‘ll line it out for them if that’s what it takes. Jerks. Will it work? Don’t know… Can only try. It’s not brain surgery. Make the cuts. Start with what’s necessary – Military, economic policy re-structure, limit government in our lives. Consolidate jobs & departments, lose slush funds. No more trading stocks or drawing funds other than paychecks while in office. Period. Do the job or get out. Disallow staffers unless necessary. Imposed term limits by the voters, they obviously won’t do it on their own. The voters need to start calling the shots. Adhere to a budget that makes sense or get out. They need us more than we need them.

Rick supports the Patriot Act..which is very alarming and he has no plans to balance the budget..That he was named one of the most corrupt Senators was also alarming..not for the perks that he got for his family..but the correlation between ear marks and campaign contributions..made makes me think he is dishonest..but not as dishonest as Newt.. No one running beats Newt at that..But I don’t see anyone with a viable plan except for Paul.. Paul’ s plan would root out the Communist/Muslim government departments such as Homeland Security , the EPA and Dept of Education..Islam intends to overtake us with Sharia Law through education and government..The Constitution would eliminate that.. but I realize people don’t see this yet..

The laying on of hands is a very serious thing to evangelical Christians. We magnify the power of the Holy Spririt onto the brother or sister we are praying for sometimes for healing, safety, and other matters that we are in one accord in. For Rick I would say it’s for the strength to carry forward and for the blessings of a successful battle to win the nomination. We may loose this battle and if we do the powers of darkness will pour into this country like the waters poured through the hole ripped into the Titanic. Our children will suffer and God forbid may die in a country filled with hatred towards God and His son. We will be a rudderless ship sinking in the cold north Atlantic with not enough life boats to go around. I add my hands to that prayer that was prayed. In Jesus name.

There is a thread out there propagated by mockers that makes it seem as though Catholic or Christian believers are perfect and without sin. Not true, sin is all around us and we are tempted like everyone else is. The key to it is that we understand that for all men that believe, sin has been overcome. We ask for forgiveness and we believe Christ has already ransomed us, we are saved. Why would others not even at least consider this in their reasoning? Who will you call on in times of despair? What man/gov’t agency will provide for you what Christ does? True, you may not understand some or even all of it but as a thinking people how can you entirely write it off? If you read this, know that Christ died for EVERYONE!!!!!…….and the only thing we have to do is believe.

As Ricky Santorum believes, his view of so-called “true conservatives” actually don’t believe in this Thomas Jefferson laissez-faire small “r” gov’t, nor a free market either, and that we need to be controlled, compelled, and coerced for our own good. Because, as slicky tricky Ricky stated, “There’s never been a society in history that has made it on pure individualism” (I’m paraphrasing here, but the context is still spot on); in other words, it takes a village to raise a child, as he believes. We must conform to the desires of the collective or be castigated.
Well he is absolutely wrong on that note: what do you call the millions of immigants whom emigrated from Europe going back to Jamestown clear through the Victorian era. What about Manifest Destiny when we settled the West, the Gold Rush, and so on? If that isn’t rugged individualism then I have no idea what can be defined as, it sure the heck was not a form of collectivism. So Rick, YOU ARE WRONG! America is one such country that was founded on individualism and still is trying to, trying to, save itself and thrive through individualism, not right-wing progressivism which makes Rick a Progressive (that’s not my opinion, that is fact based on his sociopolitical stance and can be corroborated). But hey, when you make the claim that you are the good candidate whom Jesus stands with in the race (just let him tell you), then nothing more is needed, not even a Bill of Rights when you have his morals.

You certainly wouldn’t find any resistance for that idea from me however, I was not the one who crafted the 1964 Immigration law. Remember before 1964 America actually had a rational and sane immigration policy but one group in America didn’t care for it.

If only Patriots would wake up and understand who the real enemy of America and the US Constitution is.. Why is it so difficult for so many to see? I was blind to it for most of my life but when I saw it I mean I saw it.. I couldnt deny the facts and the evidence. How do you live with yoursleves? And I’m especially bothered by how I see supposedly Christians being manipulated into supporting it by the Neo-Cons and Jews that control our Media.

Santorum touts his Roman Catholicism so one wonders what authority he believes these pastors even have to be “laying hands” on him in the Biblical sense. I hate to think what he would tolerate at a Kali temple to win votes. As to “They are probably encouraging him to slaughter more Arab women and children for Jesus.. Seems to be the new MO for many Christians in the 21st century.” The Muslim Arabs slaughter their own women and children like butchering sheep just fine without any outside help, sadly.

You guys decry Paul and his policies, when you don’t understand them. Everything Gemmeri said is true about Ron Paul. You can call Ron Paul’s Foreign Policy dangerous. But it is nowhere near as dangerous as Rick Santorum’s. Santorum has firmly stated he wants to bring back Manufacturing. I’m sorry to tell you manufacturing is dead in America. Attempting to force an industry is no better than what Obama is doing with green energy. If it was profitable to invest in manufacturing we would do it.

His answer to this is impose tariffs. Tariffs on countries is a horrible idea, it will raise the price of virtually everything in the U.S. and will force other countries to not trade with us. It will also lead countries to be even more aggressive with us. As Bastiat said, “if goods don’t cross borders, armies will.”

Finally, he has unequivocally stated he would attack Iran. We can’t afford a war with Iran, it would be a massacre on both sides. Iraqis somewhat wanted us there. Afghanistan, there wasn’t much opposition. Iran would have all 70 million Persians come up against us, and be willing to die to protect their country.

I know you are used to having a dictator as the President, but I don’t think it is too much to ask to have Congress establish our foreign policy instead of a dictator. Paul doesn’t want to be a dictator. If you want a GOP dictator instead of Socialist dictator vote for one of the other candidates.

He said something like “Why do people think that they are entitled to freedom on the Internet to just do anything…say anything…” I‘m paraphrasing but that’s pretty close.

He does have somewhat of a point but I wish he’d preface it all with “First and foremost our 1st amendment rights are sacred on the Internet as well; however, piracy…. ”

I ask that you call for our Heavenly Father’s blessings to give him the strength, knowledge and courage to lead our country back to the center and away from the sins of the left. We are weak alone, but through his grace we are unbeatable.

For the rest of you puddle goo club members, I will continue to pray that you receive our Lord’s blessing and pray that you realize there is a much greater force in this universe than you can ever imagine and he lives in the hearts and minds of all Christians who believe in him.

One nation under God, has risen from nothing to the most powerful country in the world with the cast offs and refugees from others. Those cast offs and refugees held a common thread. They believed in the grace of our Lord.

Having someone who appears to believe God will offer guidance and grace in his decisions is more assuring than what we have had the last 24 years of elitism.

“You none believers scoff at the Christians all you want. If we don’t turn this around we will be headed straight for the last days.”

I am not sure how you come up with this conclusion. I think what we would be seeing is the fall of The United States of America if we continue down the road we are currently on. This has nothing to do with the last days. To say that if the United States falls that will bring on the “end times” is ridiculous.

“But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” Matthew 24:36

Very loving of you to say this.

Shouldn’t we have been doing this for our current president? Shouldn’t President Obama be prayed for each and every day? To be shown the wisdom of God… to have his heart changed. One only needs to look at the story of King Nebuchadnezzar for a good example of this. Just read Daniel. We should pray for ALL of our leaders whatever their bias…

“For the rest of you puddle goo club members, I will continue to pray that you receive our Lord’s blessing and pray that you realize there is a much greater force in this universe than you can ever imagine and he lives in the hearts and minds of all Christians who believe in him.”

I don’t remember Christ addressing non-believers this way. I believe that he sat and ate with those who most people think to be “puddle of goo”. The only people I can see in the bible that Christ was uber upset with were the self-righteous…

What has this come to when it’s news that Christians follow scripture and pray for each other. With CNN (communist news network) obviously showing it to show that Santorum is a religious nut. But for the blaze to put this up shows they are uncomfortable with Christians praying for each other as well. Maybe mormons don’t believe in the laying on of hands.

To IMMORMON: Christians can do all things Jesus did and greater things. John 14:12…I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

God is not a respecter of persons and if we know who we are in Christ, we can do amazing things. We don’t need to go to a special human to pray for us or lay hands on us. We are the children of the King of Kings. He has given us ALL authority to use His name. I pray the body of Christ wakes up soon. Hypnotoad, I think you’re right. The Mormons believe that only an authorized person of the LDS church can perform laying on of hands. I find it suspicious that Glenn Beck/ The Blaze did not report the three state wins won by Santorum last night. Why? Is the Blaze promoting Romney only? Everyone else they seem to be covering in a different “light.” I used to love to watch Glenn Beck…watched him for two solid years…but then red flags starting going up when he started dabbling in “religion.” What are his motives? Again, clearly, the picture shown in this article of men praying for Santorum is presented in a negative spin.

Our current president claims he is a christian but he really isn’t! We all know what Obama believes you only have to dig around a little to find out! The public does not understand Belivers and the role of prayer in our private lives and you are now contributing to their having ammo to fire at Santorum and use against him. AFHVETERAN, first I would like to thank-you for serving our country. I agree with you. We are coming to the last stretch of this race, and the time has come to end the bickering and work together and unite our poeople. We all obviously want to take our country back. We have a common goal. What I want is someone that will stand up for our constitution and represent the people. I want someone who loves his country, is proud to be an American, one who appreciates the men and women who have fought and died to protect our freedom.I want a president that will salute our flag and proudly say The Pledge of Alligience . A man that will reduce the spending and lower taxes, repeal the bills that BHO has forced upon us, close the borders, balance the budget, reduce the size of government, stand with Israel, unite the races, be a strong leader in foreign policies, and one that has the courage to clean up the greed and corruption in Washington. God help us to elect one. What is so wrong with laying hands on Santorum and praying for him? Whether you believe in God or not why can’t people accept the fact that allot of Americans do? We do not have to share the same religious beliefs to want what is best for our country. If I thought Romney were the best man for the job, I would support him regardless of his Morman faith. If I trusted BHO the fact that he is black would not influence me, I would support him as well. Values, morals , strength, courage, and integrity are what I look for.

I have never in my entire life seen so much blatant racism and hatred in one place at one time, ever. Ignorance, intolerance, paranoia, lies, bigotry, phobias galore! If you want to preach to me about righteousness and reverence, I suggest you start by denouncing the vulgarity and depraved indifference directed towards others that begins right here on the Blaze. You have no exclusive right to God because of your faith. I have just as much right as anyone and I think God understands why I chose this name. I‘m not concerned about what I’m going to say to God about it. I’m more concerned with what the rest of you are saying right now. In particular the things that are said about my and your President. You may not agree with his policies and that’s fine. But when I see people describing him as SATAN, MARXIST, (and every derogatory term in the book) the vicious ugly things that are suggested be done to him and his family,… it sends a shiver down my spine. My name pales in comparison to the offense I take. My name is not meant to offend, but It gets your attention, does it not?

You guys give way too much credit to news organizations for having the power to create or destroy a candidates image. The truth about a person eventually comes out wether they want it to or not. It’s not the media that has that power, it’s the person. The person tells the truth (especially if/when they lie) and the cameras are there to record it. You can’t escape the truth. It’s always there. Just ask Herman Cain. Or Bill Clinton. Or George Bush. If Santorum “paints himself into a corner” it’ll be by his own doing.

It took your little deceptive mind almost 24 hours to figure out how to address this surprising victory over your brother Romney. Oh what a tangled web we weave!

Actually, I didnt see this as a negative article, to me it shows that Santorum is actually going to do what he has said he will do. The thing that got me fully on his side was what he said on Glenn’s radio show about the consitution, that we only have the unalienable rights given by God if we live up to the moral responsibility that is mandated we follow to have those rights. To see him going and visiting with religious leaders, especially of other denominations, shows he really does intend to make this one country under God. Its a shame so many people will want to brand him as a “weirdo” for praying.

Yeah, Bush Jr. will not work. Obama will blame people like Santorum who voted for everything GWB pushed for the economic problems we face today.

Santorum will not be able to differ from Obama on the new Iran war or our being global policemen of the world. They share that view.

Santorum will not be able to fight Obama on big government since Rick supports big government with evidence in his voting record.

Santorum cannot fight Obama on gun rights since Santorum has voted for gun restriction laws and has supported candidates that are anti gun over pro gun candidates.

Santorum cannot fight Obama on taking away freedoms from American citizens because he himself support laws like the Patriot Act.

This guy offers the American people nothing different from Obama on any issues that effect our economy or our constant wars. He continues the same polices that Obama wants minus the repeal of Obama care which all the others offer.

We need make a clear difference from Obama to win this. Only one of these candidates can use his record to show he is in clear contrast from Obama.

Santorum, Gingrich, and Romney have all been for gun control, unconstitutional wars, more spending, and less freedoms for American citizens.

Kinda depends on your definition of Independents
Many Independents are Democrats who left the party
      because they were Conservative,Pro-Life,So called
Blue Dog Dem’s,Southern Democrats, Reagan Democrats.
No place for them in Nancy Pelosi’s Democrat Party.

The other Independents are like myself
(I have to reregister every 4 yrs. to vote in Repub’s primary)
The Washington D C Republican Elites don’t represent Me.
So I Don’t Support them. The RNC used to send me fundraising letters.
I wrote back an told then I no longer give money to the Party
but do support Canidates I believe in.(Raul Labrador).

The Independents will vote for a Conservative given the chance.
I think Rick is mildly Conservative
      Newt used to be Conservative
Ron is to the Right of Conservative (more Libertarian)
Mitt can say the word Conservative.
(maybe Ann Colther can teach him to use it in a sentence)

      normally, no…..
not “amongst the brethern, so to speak.

The priest, or any of the Clergy would usually lay their hand on one’s head while “giving a blessing”.

When you see someone “laying on hands”… or extending a hand “in prayer”, what you are witnessing is the observance of biblical teaching… read up in New Testament – Acts 8:14.
It’s a way of praying together – in agreement, and in unity – and to show support for the one being prayed over….

Its quite awesome. It also bonds the folks Spirits because of how you see the blessing conferred through all who perform the prayers.

      and you know something?
whoever it is that gets the solemn resposibility to go against Barack Hussein?

I extend my arm out to them in prayer ……..
      Baruch Eta Adonai,
      Eloheynu Melech Ha Olam…..
Lord our God & Father find favor in him and give him that Spiritual wisdom, understanding, and strength…..
Open eyes and reveal truths we need to wage this righteously, so that there is No Doubt that the glory and honor is all Yours. We know that you direct all and and You are doing a mighty work!
Forgive us for not drawing closer. For getting distracted and not standing up & shouting out as we should. Have mercy on us and lift us up as You Will for us….
Hold us close in Your Hand….
and whomever You choose to fight this Obamanation, Bless him with Your Shalom…

      @Country….

      There’s Ist Timothy, verse 14

“Do not neglect your gift, which you were given through a prophecy when the body of elders gave you s’mikhah.” (laying on of hands)
      - that’s from the Complete Jewish Bible translation.

It is extremely appropriate in context, when you read verses 9-16.

      here’s the KJV:
“Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery”.

Here’s an awesome site that i know will bless you….
      http://www.biblestudytools.com/

I find it encouraging that Santorum (a Catholic) understands the appropriate-ness of the action of these evangelical pastors and elders (presbytery), AND would submit to this act of faith. Catholic doctrine points to the priests and clergy to “confer prayers / blessings“ usually ”one-on-one”….
it is something not to take lightly….

I can tell you though, when it is appropriate, and all are of one Spirit, humble, and submitting before the Lord, you will feel the Spirit of the Lord reveal Truth, confirm His will for someone….
or pour out Mercy & Blessing.

      Mathew 18:19-20
“19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask , it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. ”

      powerful stuff……

      be Bless’d in YahShua!

Sin is knowingly transgressing of Gods laws. God give us laws to protect us from danger and unhappiness. Unrepented sin brings unhappiness and spiritual death. If we want happiness we are dilligent in learning and keeping Gods laws.We must repent and seek forgiveness when we deliberately sin. Jesus suffered and died so that the consequences of our sins would not have to be borne by us if we are repentant.Repentance is the key that unlocks the door to he healing power of Jesus Christ. If we continue in deliberate sin then we throw the gift that Jesus offers us back in his face. So if we reject his suffering for our sin then we will do our own suffering which leads to terrible sorrow and misery. But our Savior as waiting and he is anxious for us to come unto him and be healed. He paid the price for our sins already. He wants us all to be happy, but we have to incorporate into our lives, the laws of happiness that he has given to us. If we do wrong we feel wrong If we do right we feel right. Jesus said that all of the comandments could be rolled into two: 1)love the lord thy god with all your heart mind might and strength. And 2) is like unto the first, love your neighbor as yourself. So how do we love our neighbor as ourself? When we hunger we feed ourself, when we are sick we take care of ourself.naked we cloth ourself. Also we should do so with our fellow man. Jesus said that if we do it unto the least of our brethren we have done it unto him. We love god by loving our fellow man

In one instance YOU LOVE GOD BY LOVING YOUR FELLOW Christian which the Bible calls brother, many people think that means biological brother, it’s spiritual brother. Jesus said to his disciples, who is my brother and my sisters, the ones that do the will of the Father. Jesus didn’t say those who suck up to everyone. As a matter of fact when a Christian does the will of the Father, most people will hate him/her!

No one is perfect and no one religion has the ‘right path to God,’ but it is what you believe in your heart that God cares about. I belong to no religious group, but I do respect them for their beliefs—I do not respect ANY group calling themselves religious yet believe all who are not one of theirs deserves to be put to death (that is NOT a religion–it is a murderous band cowards who simply want power over all men) and dehumanizes the woman God gave to man as a helpmate.
