Why Were U.S. Socialists Rallying in Support of Egypt This Weekend?

Sometimes the story comes to you. That’s what happened this weekend, when some Associated Press pictures we used in a Saturday story revealed an interesting fact: U.S. leftist and socialist groups staged rallies across the country in support of Egyptian protesters. It’s a curious phenomenon, so we decided to dig deeper. Here’s what we found. Some of it will surprise you, and unfortunately some of it will not.
Connecting the dots
Your e-mails hit my inbox Saturday evening with a vengeance. Something wasn’t right with the pictures featured in our story of U.S. protests across the country meant to show solidarity with the Egyptian people. Those pictures must have been photoshopped, one person said, because they showed something almost too strange to be true. That “something” included signs instructing anyone who saw them to visit leftist websites — one called ChicagoANSWER.net and the other PSLweb.org. An examination of more photos revealed ads for two other sites: IACcenter.org and AnswerCoalition.org.
Here are the pictures:
A quick visit to one of the sites, AnswerCoalition.org, shows why many of the signs in the above pictures look similar. The group (A.N.S.W.E.R., or Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) not only gives instructions on how to make the placards, but also provides downloadable templates:
Indeed, a recently posted article on the national ANSWER site boasts about the group’s involvement in the protests. For example, it explains how the Chicago event included a local ANSWER leader who preached an anti-U.S. message to the frenzied crowd. “The same war machine that sends tear gas to Mubarak and bulldozers to murder the Palestinians denies us jobs, healthcare, housing and equality here in the United States,” Heather Benno said.
In San Francisco, “an organizer with ANSWER Coalition-San Francisco emceed the rally,“ while in Seattle a protest organizer ”thanked ANSWER Coalition-Seattle for providing the sound that was used to lead chants and for speeches.” The group also praised itself for involvement in protests in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.
[The video below appears to show an ANSWER-style sign as well as signs from SocialistWorker.org:]
While ANSWER didn’t detail its involvement in a protest in Boston at Harvard Square, it did mention the details of that protest in a posted guide to 26 protests across North America. A video plastered on the Boston protest’s Facebook page shows one person holding a red bed-sheet-like sign indicative of a staple ANSWER position: using spray-painted letters it says “Rise Up!” and lists Tunisia, Egypt, and the United States with boxes by each country; the Tunisia and Egypt boxes have check marks, while the U.S.‘s doesn’t. A question mark hangs on the coat tails of “United States” (at the 2:25 mark below), as if to suggest America is next:
What are these groups saying?
A visit to the websites in the pictures show they groups aren’t ashamed of their views or Egyptian support. And they’re also not afraid to paint the protests as oppressed workers rising up against their rulers. In short, the groups are fitting the protests into a Marxist/socialist revolutionary mold.
The PSL (Party for Socialism and Liberation), for example, can’t hide its glee. “The Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) salutes the heroic uprising of the people of Egypt against the U.S.-backed Mubarak dictatorship,” it says in the lead story on its website. That introduction quickly gives way to propaganda-like language portraying the protests as a worker’s struggle: “All revolutions throughout history demonstrate the capacity of working people, and especially young people, to enter the political stage and, through their own deeds, their own heroism, become the force that shapes and changes society.”
The article goes on to rail against American support of the Israeli “Zionist government” (a term that eerily reflects Iran’s term for Israel, the “Zionist regime”) before revealing exactly why it’s doing activist cartwheels while supporting the Egyptian uprising: the power vacuum that would result from a government collapse would make the country a prime target for a socialist takeover.
“Egyptian society can be reorganized on the basis of a new social and class power,” the article says [emphasis added]. “The working classes, both urban and rural, can take hold of the vast resources of the nation and use them for the benefit of the masses of people rather than the international corporate and banking elites, the International Monetary Fund and the Egyptian comprador capitalist class.
“Long live the struggling people of Egypt!” it concludes. PSL followed that up with action this weekend, supporting numerous protests, or “emergency demonstrations,” across the U.S. and Canada. It included a link to those protests at the end of its article.
As it happens, however, that link brings readers to ANSWER’s website and its list of 26 protests. PSL calls itself a “member organization” of ANSWER (in a press release supporting Wikileaks), so one might expect the groups to be aligned regarding Egypt. They are.
The front page of ANSWER’s website includes a link to “important analysis of the underlying political situation” in Egypt. Where does that link take you? You might have guessed it — the PSL article referenced above.
The local Chicago ANSWER chapter offers a clearer picture of ANSWER’s passions. The Chicago chapter’s site reveals the group hosted a an event to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. “and the Black Liberation struggle.” It also advertises upcoming “socialism classes,” where interested parties can take a class called, “Is a Revolution Possible in the U.S. and What Would it Look Like?” That class and others are taught in partnership with the local PSL chapter.
Considering the close relationship of PSL and ANSWER, it’s not surprising that the third group pictured is in bed with the other two. Not only does the International Action Center (IAC) describe itself as an “anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist” organization (something the other two groups embrace), but as Michael Albert explained in 2002, ANSWER and IAC at one point shared a New York City phone number. Today they have different phone numbers but share the same address.
But there’s more. IAC was founded by Ramsey Clark, former Attorney General under Lyndon B. Johnson, who’s also been connected to the Stalinist Workers World Party (WWP). According to a 2002 LA Weekly article, both ANSWER and the IAC appear to be front organizations for the WWP. And David Horowitz’s “Discover the Networks” puts them not only in the same bed, but as Shakespeare once said, “making the beast with two backs.”
In fact, a new video posted on the WWP website regarding the Egyptian unrest features an IAC poster in the background. Like ANSWER, the video’s speaker equates the Egyptian struggle to the struggle of workers in the U.S. But chillingly, the video’s audience cheers at reports of violence:
The IAC includes a link to its own list of protests (many of which overlap with ANSWER’s) and also prominently features an article called, “Long Live the Egyptian People’s Struggle.”
“Over the next days there are demonstrations planned in cities around the U.S. to show solidarity with the Egyptian people’s struggle,” the article says. “The IAC calls on its supporters to join these actions.”
Why support this uprising?
The decision to support this uprising in Egypt may be curious to some. Indeed, when the “green movement” in Iran broke out in defiance of the Iranian government, many socialists and Marxists ignored those protests or refused to support them. Additionally, the ANSWER site trumpets the success of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, even announcing an upcoming celebration on the anniversary of him taking over the country.
Is it really about democracy, then, as some of the signs suggest?
Not really. The reality seems to be closer to something like this: when a revolution opposes a leftist dictator, leftists and socialists ignore it. When a revolution opposes an American ally (particularly an ally as pivotal to U.S. security as the Egyptian alliance is) leftists and socialists support it. Succinctly put, the groups have a vested interest in the current American system being defeated (a goal shared by leftist dictators). That’s why they can support Chavez, Ahmadinejad, and even Hussein, but rally against someone such as Mubarak.
That is not an observation about Mubarak, and his appropriately-criticized rule, as much as it is one about those who oppose him. And when those who oppose him seem to have ulterior motives, questioning them seems appropriate too.
More on that to come from The Blaze.

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 11:32amYou know what the saddest thing is about all of this? I’m starting to trust dictators more than my own countrymen. At least with a dictator you expect them to stab you in the back (think Starscream) but these revolutionaries and other useful idiots, you don‘t know when they’re going to come after you. Granted, I trust either faction as far as I can throw them.

Posted on January 30, 2011 at 10:17pmThis whole thing bothers me. To some, the Egyptian president is considered a “dictator”, though he may have been in power for around 30 years, he also has had a friendly U.S. and Israeli partnership. Maybe some reform to the Egyptian government? That might be possible. But a total change that might cause instability (especially with an anti U.S. establishment) would bring disastrous change to the region and possibly the world for that matter. It‘s in God’s hands now.

I’m sure He is sickened by the way the “leader” of our country favors illegal aliens; muslims; radicals and extremists, all in the name of political correctness.

Posted on January 30, 2011 at 11:02pmWe like dictators who work with the US. We don‘t like dictators who don’t work with the US. Example would be Iraq when they had the war against Iran. Or how we supported Al-queda against Russia. We don’t care about principles like “freedom” and “Liberty”. For if we did, we would have been taking a hard line stance against MANY countries who we are allies/associates with (China, Saudia Arabia, Egypt, etc, etc). This blah, blah, blah from the right is getting old and YES I am Republican. A Liberty Republican.
Instead of capitalizing on possibly spreading freedom as lovers of freedom, we are just bitching up a storm about socialists being organized. Come on America, wake up and spread the message if we truly care about principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Many Egyptians want those too, they just don’t have the resources to actively apply them. Unfortunately the socialists have been waiting to take the power. SOOO lets fight back!

Posted on January 30, 2011 at 11:23pmI‘m no scholar but I’m old and I remember things. And one thing I remember is a civil revolt in Cuba in the late 50′s. My dad assured me ‘those islands’ were always having revolts and ousting leaders. That was part of the reason we laughingly dubbed them ‘banana republics’ and this was just one more chapter in the cyclical power-grab. That pretty well quelled my 14-yr old curiosity about the matter. I found it reassuring because I was fascinated with the souvenirs I had seen around my grandma’s house brought back by relatives who had visited Cuba and I wanted to go there someday myself.
When the dust settled and Fidel Castro emerged as the new leader it wasn’t long before America realized, OMG, he’s communist! Who knew?!!
I’ll tell you who knew. Some years later I learned the American government (CIA) had been watching Castro’s guerilla fighters in South America for 15 years and were well aware of his leanings. Who didn’t know was the American public because the msm chose not to report this interesting tidbit about Mssr. Castro. News was a lot easier to control in those pre-internet days.
This thing in Egypt is beginning to look, sound and smell a lot like Cuba in 1958. Mubarak is undoubtedly no angel (nor was Fulgencio Batista of Cuba) but I’ve got a feeling that his successor is going to be far worse.

Liberty and personal freedom are self preservation.

Posted on January 30, 2011 at 11:53pmYou will NEVER guess who is behind the uprising in Egypt…good ol’ George Soros!
Riots. We are seeing them erupt throughout the Middle East everywhere we look: Tunisia, Algeria, Albania, Yemen, Jordan and of course, Egypt. And in the wings, drooling with horrific glee, Iran is pushing and prodding for a Muslim uprising to oust the enemies of Islam – primarily the US and Israel – using their Muslim Brotherhood henchmen and utilizing Hezbollah and Hamas. And Iran’s chosen vessel for Egypt – Mohamed ElBaradei, who, until a day or two ago, was under house arrest.
You remember ElBaradei right? He’s the tool for the IAEA who kept giving blessings to Iran and their nuclear program. But I‘m sure he’s a good guy – he has a Nobel Peace Prize just like Obama does. Wait a minute… On second thought, I guess that designation is pretty much a joke currently. I’m also sure it is a huge coincidence that George Soros and ElBaradei both sit on the Board of trustees for the International Crisis Group.
By all accounts, Mubarak is a vicious dictator who routinely uses torture and murder to achieve his goals. The brutal Egyptian police are the feared enforcers for Mubarak and now they have all but disappeared from the streets, leaving Egyptians to protect themselves from roving gangs and militant Muslims who were freed from the prisons by radical Islamists. He needs to go, but G-d forbid he is replaced by Islamofascists. Since the Muslim Brotherhood is approximately 20% of the rioters and the Coptic Christians are about 20%, there is hope for a free government to be put in place. But much is in doubt.
Side note: Why does the media keep calling the Egyptians who are protecting their homes and families vigilantes? A vigilante is someone who illegally punishes an alleged lawbreaker, or participates in a group which metes out extralegal punishment to an alleged lawbreaker. That word unjustly labels these people as criminals which they are not. Wouldn’t you protect your home and family if it was you? Of course you would…
Let us return to the beginning of the riots. I have seen many who are asking who started all this in Egypt, including Walid Phares on Fox News last night. That’s a very good question. And Phares stated that he believed it was bloggers on Facebook who began the riots. Curious, I started to dig and I believe he has stumbled upon something.
In April of 2010, a weekly magazine aiming to link Arab bloggers with politicians, the elderly and the elite was launched in Egypt. The weekly Wasla – or “The Link” – is being heralded as a first for the Arab world, with plans for articles by bloggers as a way of giving them a wider readership. I understand that only 50 issues were planned. Sounds like just enough to accomplish an intended goal. 1,000 copies are planned for distribution to political, academic and literary circles.
Wasla is published by the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information and financially supported by the Open Society Institute created by none other than George Soros. That wasn’t very long ago and Soros has a definite track record of rallying the youth to create chaos and revolt. This is a link between Soros and Egypt and the other riots as well. Of course, he is several levels removed as he always is, but this has his telltale stamp on it as well as his documented financial support.

It’s obvious that you have been paying attention, Congratulations. I mean it seriously. There are too few people now-a-days that actually ‘get it’, so I’m impressed when I notice someone that does.
To be fair though, I need to commend most of the people that post here. You have taken some of what you may have already known or suspected, then taken what Glenn has taught, and mixed the two together into a logical and very obvious pattern that Americans can ill-afford to ignore. Getting the rest of America to listen to what we know is true is the hard part. If we can master that gigantic problem, we would be well on our way to saving this country. And for you progs out there reading this… I purposely did not say “saving the world” because right now my concern is saving the United States of America. You may think I’m being selfish, and I really don’t care. I don’t care because I consider it being patriotic. I do believe the USA is the one to lead this world out of darkness, but we cannot do it until we get our own house in order.
With faith, and help from fellow patriotic Conservatives, we stand a good chance of fixing the problems facing our country, and I think Glenn has a handle on the only way it can be done. First we have to fix ourselves. Then we fix our families. Then we fix our friends and communities. Then we fix our country. Then we can start helping the rest of the world. Not a minute sooner!

Posted on January 31, 2011 at 9:37amEgyptian revolution has deep prophetic implications
The man who stalled the world for nearly a decade from taking action against Iran’s nuclear program, former United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mahmoud El Baradei is leading the riots to overthrow the government of Egypt. He is supported by the banned terrorist group Muslim Brotherhood, who has instigated much of the unrest and is willing to work with El Baradei in forming a new government. Additionally, El Baradei is receiving political support from Iran where its state media is characterizing the uprising as a populist movement against Egypt’s alliance with the United States and its peace with Israel. Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei said last year that he wants an Islamic government in Egypt.
El Baradei’s true colors are being masked by the news media, which is portraying him and others supporting the Egyptian unrest as a move toward the utopian goal of “democracy’ in the Middle East. This unrest, however, could well be part of a centralized plan schemed by terrorists in Iran–one that has supported the fall of Lebanon into the hands of Hizbollah, the Tunisian unrest, the shift in Turkey toward stronger Islamist government, the unrest in Pakistan, and the hard line in the latest democracy of the Middle East–Iraq, where its Islamist Constitution is allowing the crackdown on Christians. The world may well be witnessing a wide-sweeping Islamic revolution that will change the face of the earth for the end times.
Egypt is the subject of much of the Lord’s interaction with the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and even Daniel. There are 558 verses in the Bible mentioning Egypt. Many of them discuss the plight of the Israelites coming out of Egyptian slavery. And there are dire warnings to those Israelites that seek to return to Egypt. Daniel Chapter 11 speaks of the four kings of Persia–modern day Iran–and one of them, the King of the North after much struggle shall overcome the King of the South. From these battles will arise a powerful king as Daniel 11:37 says, “Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.”
Irrespective of who the theologians of this day identify as this king, the kings of the north and the south will come against him “at the time of the end.” Verse 42 says, “He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.” The unrest in Egypt at the same time as that in Lebanon, Tunisia, Pakistan, Yeman, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Jordan has end time implications. The King of Persia, which today is the Ayatollah in Iran, is making a move. The prophetic change that appears to be occurring is that the world’s harshest enemy of Israel, which is Islam, is rising up and even the United States, Israel’s ally, is supporting this movement, which is far deeper than the 1979 Iranian revolution…

The Bolsheviks did not overthrow the Russian Provisional Government by infiltrating it, they overthrew it by creating an alternative power base in the “soviets of workers‘ and soldiers’ deputies.”
Lenin’s party did not create the soviets, but did prove very adept at hijacking them.
The Provisional Government itself was not really “democratic” except in intention; it was a more or less self-appointed body, not really responsible to anyone, which survived more or less on the sufferance of the mob until the Bolsheviks turned the mob against it.
