Why Won‘t Doctors Say What’s Wrong With the Mysteriously Ill Girls in NY?

Since Sept. 2011, 12 girls from Leroy Central School District in New York have been exhibiting mysterious symptoms like that of Tourette’s, which came upon them suddenly and have required many of them to be taken out of school and tutored at home.

Doctors are coming forward with some answers, but concerned parents say that its not enough. Officials from the New York State Health Department, the State Office of Mental Health and the school held a public meeting with parents on Wednesday night where they said each of the girls were being treated for their symptoms and stated they had reached a diagnosis. The hard part for parents to swallow was that doctors said they were unable to reveal the diagnosis due to HIPAA compliance, a federal law that protects a patient’s medical privacy.

Watch the local ABC WGRZ news report:

According to WGRZ, officials have ruled out environmental factors, infections, the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, illegal drugs and vaccines like Gardasil. Dr. Greg Young, with the NYS Department of Health is reported as saying that tics can be caused by genetics, head trauma, ADHD and OCD medications and antihistamines. Doctors also don’t believe that the girls are making it up.

Health Officials Dont Reveal Diagnosis of Mysterious Illness Affecting New York High School Girls

Dr. Greg Young spoke to more than 150 parents and students Wednesday about the mysterious illness.

Although Young said at the conference that “these children have all been seen by professionals that have come up with answers and they are all being treated and they’re actually doing pretty well,” parents of two of the girls have come forward saying this is not the case. They say they have not been given answers.

WHEC has more from Jim Dupont and Beth Miller who say their daughters have been affected by the strange illness and they’re still in the dark:

Health Officials Dont Reveal Diagnosis of Mysterious Illness Affecting New York High School Girls

Jim Dupont voiced his frustration about not being told what his daughter suffers from.

“Well in my opinion we’ve only just begun. If you haven’t found anything then we have to turn some more stones and we need to have another investigation that is not government related,” Jim Dupont said.

“My frustration is until September 10th of 2011 I had a healthy girl, a girl that was in junior high who loved school  had a lot of friends, was very happy high honor roll and then all of a sudden she wakes up from a nap and she’s twitching out of control,” Beth Miller said.

[...]

One doctor told Miller that her daughter could have something called conversion disorder. It’s a neurological problem brought on by stress, just like the tics.

“But it‘s very rare and why isn’t it happening in other schools? Why is it just focused on LeRoy?” Miller asked.

“Even if that’s what it was, it does not tell us the cause of it,” Dupont said. “You could call it anything you want, but what caused it?”

WHEC reports that the symptoms of conversion disorder include symptoms include blindness, inability to speak, numbness and paralysis, which doesn’t explain in totality what the New York students are exhibiting.

WHEC also reports that one of the girls who was experiencing the illness contacted the station and said she has been out of school for three months and is still experiencing symptoms, which her doctor told her were “something neurological that they can’t figure it out yet.”

Fox and Friends hosted psychiatrist Keith Ablow and neurologist Keith Siller to discuss the illness. Siller mentions conversion disorder as a possibility, which he says could mean it’s all in the girls heads, but Ablow points out that if seizures were involved that would imply evidence has been found EEG, which would suggest other causes. Ablow also brings up that the question of why parents who may have knowledge of the diagnosis of their girls (it is assumed that if some girls have been diagnosed, their parents would be told of the disorder as they are still minors) aren’t coming forward.

Here’s the clip from Fox and Friends:

This is the problem with parents sending kids to public schools. There is an assumption on their part that no harm will come to thier child while at school. And that vaccines ar to prevent communicable deseases from being spread. Yet, what they inject our kids with is truly unknown. (I’m speaking from expierence). We have been conditioned to accept this crap, now we have to re-condition ourselves NOT to take this crap

I have a friend who could be my daughter..she took her son to get a vaccine and told me she’d gotten Gardisil. I didn‘t say anything to her because it was too late and I didn’t want to upset her..but not more than six months later she came up with the cancer that it is supposed to prevent.. Of course they told her that there were hundreds of different strains of this rare cancer..so they are not held responsible..

This is an example of how the accomplishments of men don’t mean anything to the Lord, and in the snap of a finger the Lord will turn men into a common monkey to make room for “Mankind.” That’s why the Bible warns “Man” about being careful to not leave no where to go.

A close friend of mine in college got HPV from a boyfriend of hers. Yes, they were safe and used protection (condoms); doesn’t matter, HPV bypasses condoms. 75-80% of people will have HPV at some point in their lives; the majority of college students have it. Most cases clear up within a few years, often without any symptoms ever showing. But in girls, it can develop into cervical cancer. My friend was somewhat lucky, and doctors caught it when it was still pre-cancerous.

As a man, there’s no direct risk from HPV (besides the 1% chance of warts). But any woman you sleep with will catch it, and thousands die every year from ovarian cancer.

As for Gardasil itself, it contains no mercury or thiomersal (so no worrying about autism, if you’re one of those folks), and no living or dead virus (so no worrying about getting HPV from it). It does have a chance of side effects, like all vaccines; usually irritaiton, headaches, or hives (all with chances of less than 10 out of 100,000 doses). A few dozen people have gotten blood clots (.2 out of 100,000 doses). Fun fact: this is a smaller rate than the mandatory MMRV vaccine.

All said, if you’re a guy and sexually active, you should get this vaccine. And if you’re a girl and want to be save, either abstain entirely and marry a virgin, or get the vaccine; otherwise there’s an 80% chance you’ll get HPV.

Mydaughter was told by her doctor 10 yrs ago that it was going to eventually be mandatory because f the rate of STDs and really tought it would be a good idea for her. She was already over 21 at the time and I begged her not to do it. I could see the writing on the walls even back then. This is a very dangerous drug. They are ok with the consequences because in comparison to some other vaccines it didn’t appear to be as dangerous. It seems I was not wrong. They will not admit to the real dangers of this drug. The worst part of it is the fact that it is sterilizing a portion of our population.. eugenics anyone?

I’m a doctor (Family Practice) and have had questions about this vaccine since the beginning.

As with Hepatitis B and the upcoming HIV vaccine, my main question is, why are we making vaccines for behaviorally-related diseases? No one’s working on one for gonorrhea, syphilis, CA-MRSA, Lyme or other more common bugs, but the sex-linked diseases? And how many hundred deaths are now associated with it?

Our daughter, 15, won’t get this one, sorry “big pharma” I don’t trust you and the bought and paid for FDA this time, and maybe for much longer.

“why are we making vaccines for behaviorally-related diseases?”

Because they still kill thousands of people? Because they lower the quality of living? Because there’s a demand for them? Because, if you’re actually a doctor, you swore the Hippocratic Oath to “respect the hard-won scientific gains” in the medical field, and to “prevent disease where I can.”

If you sit back and lift your nose at people in need and say “Well, serves you right. I’m the doctor, and you deserve to be harmed even though I can help you,” I’d venture you took a Hypocritical Oath, not the Hippocratic Oath.

Although I do agree with your position about HPV …..and AIDs for that matter ….. (both life style diseases brought on by casual sex) you must be careful about how you use the term life-style disease when deciding whether or not drug development is necessary. The jury is still out as to whether or not cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and some psychiatric illnesses are life-style related. Not too long ago there were some employers (Verizon for one) that would not pay for cardiovascular meds as they claimed CVD was a life-style disease.

One way to look at this is to consider a young woman that DID decide to remain a virgin till meeting the right man and marrying. However, the man was not as abstinent as she was. On their wedding night she contracts HPV. Should the man have been given the vaccine? Should the woman been given it. The bigger concern is that the current vaccine does not have the coverage it needs to really protect those choosing that life-style.

Finally, you should consider an attitude change regarding ‘big pharma’. Unless you’re handy with a scalpel or an ultra-lefty you don‘t have a job without the products from ’big pharma’. Or maybe you just have a thing against free market capitalism ……….. or just how it applies to medicine?

Of course HPV bypasses condoms, that‘s because it isn’t necessarily sexually transmitted.

It’s a wart. The same as a normal plantar wart. It turns into cancerous tissue when women get it on their cervix and it’s allowed to metastasize. It can be frozen off the same as a normal wart or surgically removed if women get regular pap smears to detect it, which Obamacare doesn’t want to pay for. They want to play a different rype of prevention, a micro cocktail of multiple active and inactive bioorganisms mixed with particulates and heavy metals that the bioorganism attach to.

They want to play mad scientist with humans and call it prevention when regular pap smears are sufficient for cervical cancer prevention.

Seems very suspect, is it an Obaney care rule that a Childs right to privacy ( since the government knows, this is a farce!) trumps the parents need to know?
I have to agree with what others have said. If this was my daughter, and my doctor told me he knew but couldn’t tell me, I’d reply then you Dr. shall have to face the consequence of your choice. The first consequence would be he would no longer ber her doctor, nor my families, nor my relatives, nor my friends, nor my communities if I had my way. Sencondly I would demand he imeaditly turn over her medical records to me, and would take them if he failed to do so.

“Seems very suspect, is it an Obaney care rule that a Childs right to privacy ( since the government knows, this is a farce!) trumps the parents need to know?”

Clinton-era, co-sponsored by a Democrat and a Republican in 1996. HIPAA always almost* allows parents to know, provided they are legal guardians and the children are underage. Which means in this case:

      1. The girls are 18.
      2. The parents are not the legal guardians (either the court has guardianship, or for some other reason)
      3. The child chooses not to tell the parents (if state laws allow for this)
      4. The parent agrees that the doctor and child should keep the discussion confidential between themselves.

It’s one of these. My guess is number 3.

The one thing I have noticed with myself lately, is if I cut back on water consumption, my muscles twitch at the oddest times. I also have also noticed if I eat sweets (my nemesis), I also get a slight twitching in my arms and legs. I have been making a conscience effort to cut out sweets and drink more water and become more active. I also noticed when sitting in the same position for a long time, it also can exacerbate these symptoms. I am not saying this is the issue in these girls case or to their degree, but it is something to consider should others experience these muscle twitches.

The parents need to come out and state what they have been told. There is a disease other than Parkinson’s that cause those symptoms. This was highlighted on the doctors and the woman had to have surgery to correct the issue. She was a budding dancer and suddenly could not dance due to this issue. I forgot what it was called.

Uh, get your daughters out of NY. Get them another well known hospital and area AWAY from where they were poisoned (apparently) and get some REAL answers. Pretty obvious something caused this.

Just a thought. Prayers are with the girls and their parents and for REAL HUMANE DOCTORS out there to quit playing games and TELL THE TRUTH. There you go!

    Very very fishy
    Why just girls
Why just girls of this age
why just girls of this age and same school.

Because they are making it all up. Either that, or we have a new age and gender specific virus or prion causing mental instability. The latter is unlikely.

      ****
Out of the loop on the word “prion” but there are many disorders which are either age or gender specific, I would like to remind you of all the “BULL” we heard when they first discovered “Legionaires Disease ; the people “in the no” all accused the victims of making it up, it took many further outbreaks before this was recognized as an airborne problem coming from furnace and ac ducts. The same with a fungus found in TX homes after floods, a few years back, whole homes had to be destroyed because the fungus couldn’t be erradicated. Considering the recent hurricane which hit NYC last year and the flooding, I’d wonder if the sewer lines were backed up in the girls restroom in their school? Is there another place in the school where only girls of this age would go, like the locker room and if so, did these particular girls hang out in a certain area? Also, how close are these girls school to ows, and could there be vermin coming from zucotti park once there were no more people hanging out dropping food there, which have relocated to their school?
REMEMBER, THE BLACK PLAGUE WAS SPREAD BY RATS!

    The way I’m reading this:

    1. Doctor’s cannot reveal diagnosis to parents due to HIPAA compliance, a federal law that protects a patient’s medical privacy… even when they are MINORS?

    2. Doctor’s claim they have explained it to the girls, but the girls deny it?

Both of your conclusions seem incorrect. The first is definitely false. HIPAA is for patient confidentiality, but it does not apply to the legal guardians or parents of an underage child. Unless the girls are 18 years old; the courts have custody of the children and not the parents; or state law says that the child can choose not to share the diagnosis, parents are always allowed to know.

As for the second, it sounds like the doctors (some of them) have decided on a diagnosis, but the parents deny it. I can see this happened for several reasons: their children refuse to share (also allowed under HIPAA); the parents do not have legal guardianship of their children for some reason; or (most likely), the same doctors are not treating all of the girls. It’s likely that there are several doctors involved, and they don’t all care for the same patients. So one doctor may think he’s diagnosed the issue with Patient A, but he isn’t the doctor for Patient B, and Patient B‘s doctor hasn’t make a diagnosis yet. Thus, the parents of Patient B are waiting on the second doctor’s diagnosis and freak out when they hear the other girls have been diagnosed.

in some states at age 13 children have to give consent for their information to be shared with parents. states like WA where they have no parental notification of minor age abortions have this ridiculous law. it makes it extremely hard to parent when you cant find out what is going on with your kids whether they are now taking antidepressents or are on birthcontrol. many complaints have been lodged in my state and still the law remains

More rules and restrictions from our CRIMINAL FEDERAL GOVT…. You would think they could release their findings, without releasing names, at least to put the other parents at ease …
