WI Elementary School Confiscates, Bans 2nd Grader’s Christian-Themed Valentines

Dexter Thielhelm, a second-grader at James Madison Elementary School in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, had a simple message for his classmates: “Jesus loves you.” The young boy had worked diligently with his mother and siblings to create candy and notes for his friends at school, as he filled empty water bottles with candy and a rolled-up a Bible verse (John 3:16) to share with his classmates. But earlier this week, to the surprise of the boy and his family, school officials confiscated the valentines before they could be handed out.

Apparently, it is district policy that Christian valentines not be distributed — a message that Melissa Wolf, Dexter’s mother, received when she met with principal Matthew Driscoll this week. The verse, ”For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life,” was apparently too religious in nature for the school to allow to be disseminated.
Wolf, 30, who has spoken out to media outlets, says that she’s not happy with the way in which the principal handled the situation. Driscoll, however, declined to comment to media on Wednesday.
“He wishes I would have asked him for permission to hand out this questionable material,” Wolf explained, describing her interaction with the principal. “I did not get an apology. I got an apology that he didn’t call me; I didn’t get an apology for taking this away from my children. He sat and listened to me kindly, and heard the things that made me upset.”
Here’s the really intriguing element to the story. Wolf has two other children at the same school. Both of whom are autistic and nonverbal. These children made similar valentines and they, too, were confiscated. But one of her other children who attends a different school — a local charter institution — handed his notes out without a hitch, the Wausau Daily Herald reports.
While Wolf is clearly frustrated by the situation, the district’s assistant superintendent, Mark Holzman, addressed the issues and attempted to explain the rationale behind the confiscation. The district doesn‘t have a specific policy that bans religious verses being handed out on Valentine’s Day, he said, but the young age of the children was one of the primary reasons he cited (i.e. the students aren’t old enough to understand the religious message).
The district also had concerns that the Christian content could lead others with negative messages to also distribute to fellow classmates. After all, once one person is allowed to hand out a message, any individual can then tout his or her values, Holzman argued.
“Otherwise we would be allowing anybody to give out personal messages or values,” Holzman explained. “If somebody wanted to put anti-Semitism in there … people would be outraged by that. If kids have a choice, it’s a different scenario. But in this case we’re talking about handing it out to everyone in the class, and they don’t have a choice.”
Wolf says that, though the school attempted to explain to Dexter why the valentines couldn’t be handed out, he was embarrassed and confused by the incident.

Now to take a child’s valentine cards…a little excessive don’t you think…NO I guess not when progressive unions are doing everything in their power to stop Christianity…But our nation was founded on Judeo/Christian belief. You progressives have perverted to true meaning of the separation of church and state. The only time you back off, is if it fits your agenda. Posted on February 16, 2012 at 11:25pmIsn’t it ironic that Valentine was a Christian Priest who was outlawed by the government of Rome for secretly performing Christian marriages and other Christian activities. He was martyred for his faith. I think that atheists and other Christian haters should not celebrate Christian Holy Days such as Saint Valentine’s Day, Saint Patrick’s Day, Mardi Gras, Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving. They hate God and recognition of Him, so they should not be able to partake of all of the joy of celebrating the love of the Lord until they accept Him as their Savior. Atheist should just move to atheistic countries where they believe in taking away the right to practice your own religion freely. If we are given our inalienable rights by God then the Government can’t take them away.

I would venture to say most of us Blazers are for PARENTAL control of the schools. The way it is right now the liberal administrative puppets are having their strings pulled by the bureaucrats who don’t want to lose the money pumped into the districts from Washington and the state governments.
“So why don’t you all mind your own business and let the district conduct its schools as it sees fit? Believe it or not, most of the country does not need The Blaze to play Religion Police.”
The schools need us “religious police” as you call us to keep their morally depraved teachings in check.

This child, since he is 7, is either in 1st or 2nd grade. I have a granddaughter the same age and I know, that she would absolutely understand what was being said in the note. I believe, that schools today are so afraid of being sued because someone else may claim “this really makes me feel unwanted” (seems to be the new norm for atheists) or that they believe in the new 21st Century teaching practices, which is definitely not geared for those with any religious convictions. May I suggest, that if you are able, to home school your children, because this new educational policy will destroy your children and the family as a whole,

So i guess we deserve what we get. We have somehow developed this idea that we need to be passive in order to be Christian. I seem to remember how Jesus cleared out the money changers at the Temple mount. He did not do it in uncontrolled anger. We dont have to be violent to get our point across, but we do have to stand up and tell them we will not stand for this. But single individuals have very little influence. Stand up and be counted. Make a choice to stand for God today! Your time is getting short. If we are that last generation and I believe we are, then you’ve got some serious choices to make. Time to re-evaluate everything you’ve been taught to believe is good and wholesome. If it came from the TV set, from the public school system, from some self professed prophet of the new age, then your no doubt living in darkness.
Wake up now and receive the truth, the truth through the Holy Spirit in the world today will set you free and guess what? Its free for the asking. Thanks to the paranoia of our founding fathers, having live under a repressive regime without representation, they established the right to bears arms against a tyranical government. No, we are not doomed until they take away our arms. Before the National Socialists exposed their true agenda in 1930s Germany, they removed the right to private ownership of arms. So when the Gestapo came banging on your door in the middle of the night, you didn’t have a prayer of fighting back. So at this point we are not doomed, we are merely unorganized.

The point of the message is not so much the point with me as is the censorship involved.
If a Muslim or Wiccan student wants to include a message of their own, fine.
It’s about freedom of speech. I am free to present my opinion, you are free to not listen.
Should we ban Confucius‘ sayings or Buddah’s sayings from all book, posters, music, etc that is being heard by everyone in public? Who is to say that a quote is sterile enough to be read to the masses?
I am not offended by someone else’s opinion, it causes me to think about and defend my own.
If a belief that is contrary to mine is presented, so be it. That person has a right to their opinion.
It is the ‘cleansing of thought’ that is a concern for me, and every freedom loving person should be outraged by regulations that diminish it.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 1:58pmIf anyone thinks that there is not an escalating war on religious freedom, this is one more example of that argument being wrong. Let’s all remember, that separation of church and state, as written in the Constitution, was meant to protect citizens and churches from a state sponsored religion. It took a court case, judicial activism at its most extreme, in the late 1940s to turn that around and say that no religion, or religious symbols, can be present on government property, including the public square. The radicals in the educational system are breaking things down, bit by bit. This is one more case of how extreme it has become. Is it any wonder this is happening in Wisconsin? I have said on other comment streams that I have nothing against Atheists, they have as much as anyone else to believe what they do. But, when the Atheist activists begin to chip away at the rights of the religious majority in our nation, using the 1940s court case as their shield, and activist jurists as their knights, that is when it goes well beyond acceptable limits.

It never ceases to amaze me how little people know about history, but have significant knowledge about litigious situations and when or how specific rights may have been infringed upon. I’d love to poll most of the parents of the kids in that class to find out just how much they know about the Constitution and their rights therein. I’d bet they only know about the ones that the educational establishment and the MSM, have told them are infringements.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 2:48pm“Banning Christian themed SAINT VALENTINE’s cards!
So we have a holiday honoring a Christian SAINT but we must ban the Christian part…”
Some quick corrections:
1. There was no single Saint Valentine, but several named Valentinus (three, to be precise; Valentine of Rome, Terni, and Africa). They were martyrs, with no connection to love. Centuries after their deaths, VoR became famous as people began making up legends about him. A millennium later, the legends continued to grow, and finally got to the “love” part: Valentine began a priest covertly marrying young soldiers in love in a time when it was banned. He also healed the blind daughter of his jailer when he was caught, and on the eve of his execution wrote her a card from “her Valentine.”
Note, this has absolutely NO historical fact behind it. It did make for a pretty good story though. The Renaissance-era folk loved it and ran with the forbidden love theme. By the present day, the Church finally decided enough was enough; Pope Paul VI deleted it from the calendar of holy days in 1969.
It’s a holiday that takes only a name from three poorly remembered saints from the second and third century. It’s as “Christian” now as a Mardi Gras day parade in New Orleans.

It’s insane that progressives defend a violent, intolerant, deceitful religion and ban one that teaches love, forgiveness, and truth. This tells you a lot about how they think.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 3:14pmCommon Sense
If the message is a statement of faith that like any other allowable behavior is non-disruptive and does not attack or demean others then it is a simple matter of letting kids express their faith.
If the message is “You will burn in hell”, “muslims are evil”, etc then they should be asked to stop that behavior.
If an atheist in the class says please stop giving me your Christian valentines then out of respect any Christian should stop and any teacher would enforce support that.
If your kid goes to school everyday harassing other kids with unwanted messages then they will be in trouble.
Simple respect, simple common sense.

But, using the occasion of, and the observance of, valentine’s day to do it is not appropriate, due to its pagan roots.

Get a clue. Christ invites all people to God’s love not just the “anti-pagan blah blah” pharisees like yourself.
Next you’ll be criticizing Jesus for eating with the tax collectors.
Valentine’s day is a Holiday devoted to love.

Posted on February 16, 2012 at 1:30pmWait, isn‘t SAINT Valentine’s Day a Christian thing? I know for a fact that many religious Jews (myself included) don’t celebrate a day that commemorates the death/execution of a Christian Saint. Next you‘ll tell me that Christians can’t give out religious messages for Easter. Christmas and Valentines Day are Christian. This isn’t Independence Day or Thanksgiving.

The whole they are too young to understand thing that was mentioned. Only the parents would understand and be offended in that case, and thus a major lawsuit and settlement the district would have to pay out. While this is incredibly PC it is there to prevent the ACLU GBLTQ FFRF and every other alphabet organization form suing. While the Mom has a reason to be upset this has been blown out of proportion.

Something like …
If you’re a Christian you have been lied too.
There is NO GOD,
When you die , you’ll just rot into the ground and be eaten by worms …………………….
sent your kids to Private school of your choosing
but keep religion out of public school, it only opens the door for things that 267 said.
after all the Constitution says …
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by ““THEIR CREATOR ”” with certain unalienable Rights, “” ( Key Words = “Their Creator ” Not mine,or yours, )
Now explain to me, If we allow one then we have to allow all the school would end up spending all there time on religion, agnostic, or atheism. And I’m sure that the Founding Fathers knew this and did their VERY BEST !! And I’m sure that they looked at History and knew that Government Religion does not work. In fact it can turn very ugly
…………………………..
now get off the damn internet and do something for Christianity,( or do you think that your 10 % is all you have to do ?) start a youth group, or have a bake sale. and NO The Gov’t Cant stop you from doing that …. Stop whining
