WikiLeaks Bradley Manning Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by Member of Icelandic Parliament

Bradley ManningAfter taking a long hard look at some of its nominees and recipients, the famed Nobel Peace Prize has become, in certain circles, the brunt of many a joke.

Now, disgraced WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning could be added to that controversial list. On Saturday, Icelandic member of parliament Birgitta Jónsdóttir posted a nomination letter on her blog on behalf of the three-member parliamentary group “The Movement,” proposing Manning as a candidate for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.

Nobel Peace Prize nominations can be submitted by any member of a national assembly, among others.

IBI reports:

The Icelandic parliamentarian has been a vocal supporter of WikiLeaks since it leaked the “Collateral Murder” video of a 2007 Baghdad strike by U.S. forces that killed at least a dozen unarmed civilians, including two Reuters reporters, which is widely believed to have been acquired and sent to WikiLeaks by Manning himself. In December 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a subpoena request to Twitter for data pertaining to prominent WikiLeaks figures, including Bradley Manning, Julian Assange, and Birgitta Jónsdóttir.

Jónsdóttir has also been an advocate for making Iceland a haven of press freedom, and in 2010 spearheaded the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative, which combined, according to the New York Times, “whistle-blower laws and rules about Internet providers from the United States; source protection laws from Belgium; freedom of information laws from Estonia and Scotland, among others; and New York State‘s law to counteract ’libel tourism,’ the practice of suing in courts, like Britain’s, where journalists have the hardest time prevailing.”

The full text of the Manning nomination is provided below courtesy of IBI:

We have the great honor of nominating Private First Class Bradley Manning for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. Manning is a soldier in the United States army who stands accused of releasing hundreds of thousands of documents to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. The leaked documents pointed to a long history of corruption, war crimes, and imperialism by the United States government in international dealings. These revelations have fueled democratic uprising around the world, including a democratic revolution in Tunisia. According to journalists, his alleged actions helped motivate the democratic Arab Spring movements, shed light on secret corporate influence on our foreign policies, and most recently contributed to the Obama Administration agreeing to withdraw all U.S.troops from the occupation in Iraq.

Bradley Manning has been incarcerated for well over a year by the U.S. government without a trial. He spent over ten months of that time period in solitary confinement, conditions which experts worldwide have criticized as torturous. Juan Mendez, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, has repeatedly requested and been denied a private meeting with Manning to assess his conditions.

The documents made public by WikiLeaks should never have been kept from public scrutiny. The revelations – including video documentation of an incident in which American soldiers gunned down Reuters journalists in Iraq - have helped to fuel a worldwide discussion about America’s overseas engagements, civilian casualties of war, imperialistic manipulations, and rules of engagement. Citizens worldwide owe a great debt to the WikiLeaks whistleblower for shedding light on these issues, and so I urge the Committee to award this prestigious prize to accused whistleblower Bradley Manning.

If Obama can win it for promises (that he hasn’t delivered on) why can’t a traitor win it too. Just goes to show how much of a joke the award is these days.

Ruling out the death penalty for Bradley Manning isn’t so strange when you consider than he openly flaunted his homosexuality in defiance of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Executing him as the traitor, spy, and worthless vermin that he is would be regarded as homophobic.

Some would let him loose, despite the Americans he might have gotten killed.

Referring to Manning’s detention before trial, Ron Paul said, “Should he be locked up and imprisoned?” Manning should be seen as a “political hero” and “true patriot who reveals what’s going on,” Paul said.

Demented as Paul’s views may seem to any real patriot, he isn’t alone:

[Manning's] backers include the Movement for a Democratic Society, a group of former Weather Underground members and radicals that includes Obama associate and terrorist Bill Ayers.

The Advisory Board of the Bradley Manning Support Network includes Robert Meeropol, whose parents, communists Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, were convicted of violating the Espionage Act and executed for giving the secret of the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. Meeropol says “it is an honor to join a Board that includes Medea Benjamin of Code Pink, as well as Daniel Ellsberg of Pentagon Papers fame, and filmmaker Michael Moore, among others, but also because I believe it is imperative for as many people as possible to raise their voices in support of Manning.”

    Ron Paul is a buffoon.

Bradley Manning was a military brat. That made it hard for him to put down roots & integrate with the community. People being people with their pecking orders, social hierarchy & bullying, Bradley fared poorly.

It is no surprise that he became gay. He wasn’t born that way.

You can find no DNA or epi-genetic reason for him being gay. After finding none, the gay posse will move on to another argument.

      People need to become better.

I was not aware that Paul had praised Manning. Interesting that my views of his behavior mirror Paul’s. When you see illegal behavior being covered up, it doesn’t matter if its classified. You are duty bound to report this to someone. Obviously Manning, if he really did release this info, did not feel that anyone would do anything about this abhorrent behavior, so he did what he could to get it released.

I had not heard that any of his releases led to any deaths in the field.

If Manning has one bit of gray matter, he’ll fade into the countryside in west Texas. There are quite a few Marines, Paratroopers, grunts and sailors, Seals, Spec Ops who have lost good friends because of some intelligence leaks. Even if no actual deaths can be attributed to wikileaks, a traitor is a traitor regardless the social outcry boasting his honor and integrity. Manning was well aware of his responsibility when he VOLUNTEERED to enlist in the Army and he chose to forsake that responsibility to subvert the US and its Allies. To many men and women in the US, Manning represents the enemy. He chose his bed, now let him lay in it.

In the past there have been some very worthy recipients. As examples:

Henry Dunant, founded the International Red Cross.
    Albert Schweitzer.
Sadat and Begin deserved their prizes, I believe.
    The Dalai Lama.
I can’t argue with Aung San Suu Kyi. Or with Desmond Tutu, Lech Walesa, and Martin Luther King.
    But that’s about it.

    Then there are the clowns:

Dag Hammarskjöld got his for being secretary general of the United Nations as did Kofi Annan (who, in my opinion, is an unindicted thief)
Obama and Gore, it goes without saying. And the arch terrorist Arafat.

But the most deserving of this accolade in my opinion, who was nominated a record five times and never won, was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

If not him, then why anybody.

W(orst ever!) Bush regime. W. and those traitors in Congress who approved his ‘war without reason’ in Iraq are the ones who should be tried for treason.

The people who have an irrational hatred of George W. Bush (one of our greatest wartime presidents) are too blinded by their venom to see facts objectively. They’re deaf to reasoning. (Glenn Beck doesn’t have much respect for Bush either, but at least he‘s tried to give him credit where it’s due SOME of the time.)

Get over it, WASPANGLOSAXON. We’ve got the problem of Obama to deal with now. And Ron Paul isn’t the answer either. He’s to the left of Obama on foreign policy, which is insane considering the threats facing us today.
