Early in the morning on March 9th, a 27-yr-old man stole a school bus just outside of Albuquerque, NM. A high-speed police chase on I-40 during the town’s morning rush hour followed. We brought you the original story back then.
Cops deployed spike strips to shred the vehicle’s tires, but that only slowed down the bus – it didn’t stop it. Several attempts by a police cruiser to use the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver also failed. Only when a bigger vehicle was employed, was the bus immobilized.
However, once the bus crashed into the divider, the suspect continued to rev the engine as police surrounded the the vehicle with guns drawn. Cops used bean bags and bullets to finally end the incident. The suspect was hit twice by gunfire and his wounds were not life-threatening.
Recently-released police dash-camera videos of a wild police chase show the drama of the situation. KOB-TV reports:

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 9:46amWell thank goodnedd to the officer who ran up and caused the shooter to stop firing. Less than six feet away with a beam bag or not the way he was shooting and he would have emptied that shotgun on this perp. Too much overkill for the LEO to keep shooting like that. I agree the perp needed to be removed from the bus, but sitting there putting round after round into him is just plain violent. Not to mention he could very well have hit the LEO on the other side of the bus.

Posted on March 28, 2012 at 4:18pmMe thinks that one agency didn’t know bean bags were being used and saw the shotgun being fired and therefore began firing also, although those were live rounds.
