‘Wild Idea’: GOP Lawmaker Wants to Imprison Illegals…Abroad

Wild Idea: GOP Lawmaker Wants to Imprison Illegals…Abroad

A California state assemblyman has suggested building prisons abroad to house California's illegal immigrant felons currently serving in the state's overcrowded prisons.

A California state assemblyman said the state should explore the “wild idea” of building prisons in foreign countries to house illegal immigrants convicted of crimes in the United States — essentially outsourcing prisoners.

Assemblyman Brian Jones, who represents part of San Diego County and a large stretch of the California-Mexico border, said his idea could help ease prison overcrowding, a serious problem in the state.

“Let’s build their prisons in their home countries and send them to those prisons,” Jones, a first-term Republican told the La Mesa Patch.

He said the state-built foreign prisons could operate a lower cost than in California, and the other countries would assume the financial responsibility of caring for the prisoners.

“I haven’t done any math on this,” Jones admitted. “But it might be cheaper to pay for the prisons in other countries — if the other country will run it and keep them actually in prison.”

Jones said statistics show about 18 percent of California’s prison population are illegal immigrants. According to a report from the Government Accountability Office, illegals make up about 25 percent of the federal prison population.

This is not the first time the idea of sending prisoners abroad has been raised in California: In 2010, then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger essentially proposed the same idea, suggesting the cash-strapped state could save $1 billion by building prisons in Mexico to house illegal immigrant felons serving time in California.

Schwarzenegger’s spokesman quickly downplayed the idea, saying it was merely “a concept someone mentioned” to the governor.

Not only should they imprision them, they should then bus them back to Mexico or where ever their from. They entered here illegally, so that means what it states… it was illegal! If I kill someone, and that is illegal, I go to prision. We should not just put them into the system in prision and taxpayers still pay the bill for their room and meals, among other things. We already have a drain on our American citizens benefits and programs, plus we are haing economic problems. And I do not care what Jesus would do! If the strongest becomes weak, then who will be able to help others later? Until we can get back on track, if it ever happens, then we need to keep our focus here in America, because we have plenty of our own problems that are like a virus, infecting every aspect of our lives. I say, the hell with outsiders for now. You do not like it here, go home! Come here illegally and your caught, good-bye, and good luck!

Okay, this guy is an idiot. They won’t imprison them….that amounts to imprisoning them for fleeing their own country by placing them in a prison there. And be assured, we would pay for every dime including staff. And if he bothered to think a little more clearly—what an opportunity for drug cartels. They would have a home base paid for.

we shouldn’t build any prisons there, we will have to maintain and pay for them still
Plus, the prisons won’t have to follow our laws being on mexican soil…

we could RFID and deport them if we were crazy. or, we could just deport them, take their pictures, and tell them if you are caught here illegally again, you will be executed instead of deported… ;)

I’m betting their is a private prison construction company or global prison management company which has this on their business plan. Perhaps if we enforced the immigration laws these individuals would not have the time to commit crimes in the US. I say drop them off in their home country and tell them that if they come back they will serve double the amount of time in a prison camp picking lettuce. Let their country place them in jail and pay for it.

Mjhoman, ever hear of the revolving door. Deport them and two days later they are back across the border. What does the criminal mind care? Until the border is sealed its a joke to send the criminal back across the border. Build an Arizona, Maricopa county Sheriff Joe, tent city and deal with it green baloney and all until the border is secure.
On the other hand … if I was a decent family man living in Mexico would I want my family to live there under the drug war culture taking over the country. Problem is many illegals that come here claim the USA as Mexico territory and bring the violence here with them to prove it. For the good guys that may be here illegally… run from it or stay and fight to make it what it could and should be. Not quick maybe and maybe not easy, but most things worth living and dying for are not won by cowards who run from the fight. Don’t know how real your president is, but break the cycle of corruption starting with yourself and join the fight for a safe, drug free Mexico.

Mexican illegals who were convicted of a crime would be transferred to a prison in Mexico. The US would agree on a daily fee to keep the person in Mexico. The fee would include some money to build new prisons.

Mexican criminals are afraid of Mexican prisons. The Mexican officials would agree to do it because it offers an opportunity for graft and bribery. Mexican illegals could be stored in Mexican detention centers while they are delaying being deported back to Mexico.

Thanks for the common sense, Abbygirl1994. Indeed, no other country would pay to keep the prison open.

America would send checks, and those checks would disappear into the ether. We’d pay people NOT to be in prison. Ridiculous.

I smell something truly evil[in the long run]about this proposal. On the surface its merely idiotic.Waste money building prisons in foriegn countries?Have these countries a track record for being able to keep prisoners locked in?Obviously not.
My bigger problem with illegals [besides the obvious]is that terror cells hide behind them. They mix into the coyote cycle to easily.Mid eastern terrorists gladly hide behind every organized crime faction thats convienent to them.[That they can physically assume the identity of without a whole lot of questions being raised-go ahead call it profiling It works and has been proven repeatedly to work]
These countrys they want to build prisons in, don’t have a track record for secure incaration of regular offenders[including illegals].You expect them to house inmates with this possible background?

Yes. I would go one step further. Seize the US assets of countries whose citizens are illegally crossing into the US and use those funds to pay for their capture, jail time, prison time and finally to deport them back home. Then the countries who look the other way would have to deal with it tangibly.

If our government would E-verify every entitlement program, make E-verify mandatory for all US businesses, most would self deport. However the prison problem will never get better if we don’t enforce our existing immigration laws. Troops on the border should be allowed to shoot first and ask questions later, if they are not crossing at a checkpoint I‘d say that’s a good sign they are illegal…

How about those ‘children’ who were BOUGHT in their own country and forced to work in menial jobs for the wealthy?? They have already been victimized. Is that the kind of country you REALLY want to live in?? And how about those who arrived here on visas and overstayed their visa because folks in business invited them to work, said they would help get a green card and then – just like the first group – turned them into victims – ALL FOR PROFIT!

Mexican trucks are now allowed to use some US highways. The trucks can deliver goods make in Mexico. Instead of returning empty, will them with aliens heading back to Mexico. The US border patrol should recover the cost of delivering an illegal back to Mexico. They should also charge to cross the boarder legally. Ten dollars for a pedestrian and twenty-five for a car.
