It may be hard to believe after seeing the picture below, but the plane involved landed safely. As you’ll see, a gaping gash opened up on the nose of the plane after it reportedly struck a large bird while in flight:
KUSA-TV has the report about the United flight that was on its way from Dallas to Denver:

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 12:26pmAt the risk of sounding petty, The Blaze needs to get its act together. Stop treating your readers like idiots. You insult my intelligence and waste my time when you write misleading headlines like this one. It’s either that, or the writer is still fooled by the “got your nose” gag.
“Wild Picture: Believe It or Not, This Plane Landed Safely”? Please.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 2:31pmI dont get your arrogancein regards to the headline. I work for Lockheed, and that is a pretty serious breech that could have had a chain reaction and made the aircraft highly unstable. Save the insulting intelligence bit for Obama speeches, those are what is insulting to intelligence. Stay up, Brother!

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 2:57pmMr. Mark, you did not risk anything. Mission accomplished. There is a Marxist in the White House. The headline could have read “Blind Three-Legged Dog Plays Water Polo Naked,” and the story could have been about a new remote control bouncy ball, and it would have not mattered. There is a Marxist in the White House. Finally, there is a Marxist in the White House, and this Marxist will make all our lives a living hell if he is re-elected. Focus, please, Mr. Mark in Texas.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 3:33pmMark you are completely correct, this isn’t anything that is going to make the aircraft fall out of the sky. Simply declare an emergency and land at the nearest airfield. They were already below ten thousand feet most likely in order to hit a bird of this size so even depressurization isn’t a concern. They were probably only a few minutes away from landing. Nothing to do but sit back and smoke a lucky.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 3:37pmDude — bird strikes happen all the frickin’ time. And yes, they cause crashes all the time .. believe ME, I am a pilot and I have had this happen. Are you saying that this is bad reporting? If you are, then you really need to check yourself mate
Report Post »scruffycat
Posted on August 1, 2012 at 3:53pmSo a chicken bashed in the radome that the radar antennas sit behind. You could blow away half that plane with ack ack and a good combat pilot could still land her. OMG omg that plane landed safely. This is why returning the mandatory draft would be a good thing, to open up these young dummys heads that are full of mush and give them a dose of reality.
Report Post »pilgrimhere
Posted on August 1, 2012 at 5:14pmNot petty at all. I immediately thought the same thing. The headline is just stupid and demeans many pilots who have managed to survive shot up or otherwise torn apart aircraft with crew.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 6:17pmSome amazing reactions to my post. Very telling. And very off-base. I’m not being critical of the incident. I’m being critical of the sensationalized reporting. I have been an aviation enthusiast since I was a small boy. When compared to many other in-flight trials and tribulations that have been reported over the years, I found nothing about this photo to be wild. And I found it unavoidably easy to believe this plane landed safely. That is simply my opinion.
If it’s not yours, feel free to express the reason for your amazement.

It’s irresponsible to make statements like “and yes, they cause air crashes all the time….believe me”. If you are really a pilot then speak the truth from a pilot’s perspective. I also am a pilot and I challenge your claim. Sensationalizing by stating “all the time” does nobody any good. It’s simply not true when you talk in real numbers.

I have seen your post on many articles and continue to wonder why you even go on the Blaze, you must be being paid by Media matters or some other group or maybe your just a sad individual with nothing but hate in your heart. It must suck to be you.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 12:21pmSay a prayer for the prowess of the pilots. That must have scared the crap out of them but they kept their cool and got the job done. Maybe they need some more hawks at the airport to keep the birds under control a bit better. Wow that’s a BIG hole!
Report Post »kwhobbies
Posted on August 1, 2012 at 12:06pmNot a really a critical area of the airframe and it didn’t affect any basic flight controls so there should be no reason not to land it. That cone on the front is aerodynamic cowling that just covers a radar dish. Possibly it knocked out their radar capability but unless the bulkhead was compromised they didn’t even loose cabin pressure. I’m sure is was a nice loud bang though and probably made the “pucker” factor go up for a moment for the guys in the front of the plane.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 11:24pm@msteiny
And the radome is mostly cardboard (true) at that. It‘s not like it’s needed to fly. It just protects the radar dish from the wind and bugs. I’ve destroyed a few in my time. The plane still flies like an airplane, with or without the radome. Ugly picture for those that haven’t seen how flimsy those things are though.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 11:58amThis could be a very different story had the trajectory been altered ever slightly closer to the windshield. Begs the question, with the size of the hole and the depth of damage, would the windshield of this aircraft prove stronger than the metal frame?
Report Post »OhioRifleman
Posted on August 1, 2012 at 8:41pmThat wasn’t metal the bird hit. It was fiberglass, meant to be transparent to the radar panels immediately behind it.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 11:45amYes, the bird’s relatives did in fact file a complaint to the DOJ demanding the arrest of the pilot and co-pilot. The DOJ has not made any arrests yet, following the current administrations protocol. It is believed the pilots involved at the time are black.

Posted on August 1, 2012 at 4:10pmSo if some Germans had just fire bombed New York from the sky, lets say, and one of their bombers that had just killed hundreds of New Yorkers was trying to flee, and one of our air defense fighters was ordered to shoot it down, would we, or should we instead smile at them and give them an escort to safety return to their bases??? HUH??? Whats wrong with this story? That Nazi should have blasted that stupid American bomber right out of the damned sky. Right? Logically? This touchy feelie crap makes me nauseous. The only reason I can think of that makes any sense is that this Nazi pilot was just getting tired of killing for the Fuhrer or something. I would have been on those 50cals barking it out BLAT BLAT RAP RAP BLAT
