A Massachusetts mini-mart owner used a long stick to beat back a pair of masked men armed with knives that were attempting to rob his store Friday night.

It was around 9:30 p.m. when the two assailants burst into the St. Elias Mini Market in New Bedford — about 60 miles south of Boston — the South Coast Today reported. Surveillance footage showed one of the men jumping on the counter demanding cash.

That’s when owner Nicholas Dawoud came out swinging, chasing him out.

The second suspect was still in the store and the two men started circling each other, with Dawoud attempting to fend him off. After several moments the suspect managed to grab the stick from the owner, so Dawoud picked up a metal rack to defend himself. The altercation continued off-camera, with neighbors coming in to help before police arrived.

Dawoud told the newspaper it was the second time in less than a week that armed men entered his store to rob it; on July 30, he said, a man put a knife to his wife’s side and demanded money. He complied, handing over nearly $2,000, but when Friday night came around he wasn’t going to let it happen again.

“I give him money, no I give money to my kids, I work for my kids,” Dawoud, a Lebanese immigrant, told CBS Boston affiliate WBZ-TV. “I work very hard. In ten years I have no days off, no vacation.”

Remember, when seconds count.. the police are only minutes away.

How many stores are we going to let get robbed before we wake up and outlaw knives. Knives should be in the hands of profesional chefs not citizens!

Indeed, blunt objects should be outlawed as well… We can have people stabbing or bludgeoning each other now can we?? We should ALL demand that EVERYTHING be made from Nurf foam from here on out…

Outlawing weapons will only lead to the catapulting of dead cows, or similarly disgusting methods of fear and intimidation. Read about the weapons of the middle ages, before the mighty gun came about.
Sticks rocks and plant fiber make bows and arrows, so will they outlaw those, it’s been tried and failed throughout history the founding fathers knew it and had no interest in repeating it.

I love the fact that in this neighborhood the people came to help and not flash mob while the owner was busy with the robber. Yes,I‘m being a bit mean but I’m so tired of the excuse that they are just misunderstood people who are frustrated with the system. I think they should make a law that sticks are illegal as he could have hurt that poor kid.

I am glad to see the people of this community come to the aid of these store owners. After all that is what being good neighbors is really all about. If more people would take on bullies and thugs like these and let them know this behavior will not be tolerated, our neighborhood would be safer places to live.

The store owner needs to have a case of wasp spray behind the counter to add to his arsenal. It shoots a decent long range spray. Too bad he lives in Mass. where only criminals have guns. He was lucky!

Love how they locked him in initially, it made me smile~ When I saw the door being broken in I was like ‘oh so his partner came back to help’ but instead it was just a swarm of people after the criminal instead. ~chuckle~

After he was subdued the women were there to help console (store owners wife like mentioned in the article?) her too. Glad to see people working towards the betterment and defense of the place where they live.
