Wild Video: Icy Ohio Road Sends Cars Flying Out of Control

The mild winter across the country has led to a decrease in viral, bad-weather driving videos this season. But this one from Ohio might make up for the dry spell.

On an icy bridge and roadway in Columbus, drivers were flying out of control after hitting a patch of black ice. One car took out a sign, another hit the ditch and went flying through the air, while another spun 180 degrees and ended up in a head-on collision with another vehicle:

But the pictures don’t tell the full story. You have to watch the video for the full effect, which includes the sound of screeching tires and crunching metal:

According to WBNS-TV, no one was injured in the accidents. It also reports the icy roads were eventually salted, but not by the local government charged with maintaining the road. Instead, a neighboring salt truck came to help out because the other trucks were tied up.

Most “drivers” are merely “motor vehicle operators” who wouldn’t recognize black ice if it jumped up and bit them. They’re all thinking(?) about something else instead of their driving. Glad nobody was hurt, but the next time they’ll likely do the same thing.

I agree. Whenever I drive, I cannot help but notice how many people are not actively driving. Either they are putting on makeup, screaming at their children, or my favorite talking and texting on their phones. If people cannot be bothered to look around and drive, then they shouldn’t drive.

Seeing that the definition of black ice is frost or ice that can’t be seen, then you‘re right most people wouldn’t recognize it.

I noticed all the vehicles in this bumper car video were all government bailout cars. Do you think that these cars were rigged to create vehicular abortions to thin out the populous so the Obama’s could increase his carbon footprint a tad? The GM motto, “buy our car”, “experience the open road”?

No offense to anyone living in a “non” mountain state. I find it hilarious that school and work get’s cancelled with an inch of snow on the ground, nothing shuts down in Utah unless we get get a couple of feet.

I know they don’t get snow or ice that often, but it‘s common sense to slow down when it’s wet, especially when it’s wet and below freezing… especially over a “bridge” where you have the cold air underneath the bridge to help create the ice.

My only wish in life is that people would use a little more logic and common sense. So many problems could be avoided in life if this simple thing were to happen!

      Coupleof comments about that.

An inch of ice and/or snow in a city that rarely experiences this type of weather has issues that others don’t initially recognize. 1. we don’t have snow plows 2. we don’t have snow chains 3. we don’t have experience driving on ice 3. we close schools because the school buses also run in rural areas where there is often more hazardous conditions than in the suburbs, and due to the above 3 points, our childrens’ safety is our primary concerns.

Peoples’ lives are at stake. I‘m not sure I would admit thinking it’s hilarious that northern states experience heat stroke deaths in 90 degree weather, when we can easily have 100-115+ days without a problem.

BASSCHICK: How about 105 deg. WITH 96% humidity and OUR children are out Bean walking and Detassling. Can you say “humidity”? Because I spent a week in Calif. and my friends were “simply dieing” from the 112 degree heat, but I was ready to see the sites because it only felt like 80 to me! And in the winter, the Supt. of schools (MY father) would not cancel school unless it was 20 below windchill, blizzard conditions, and over 6″ of snow already on the ground. Why? Because the same children he would be “keeping safe”…. if not in a warm school room, would be out in the 20 below blizzard right along with their parents feeding the Cattle. NOW tell me how you chuckle about heat and winter. Oh, and a few years back, it was 73 degrees on Christmas day….then 14″ of snow the very next day. Guess what…ALL the children were out in the 6 degree cold riding their new sleds. And that same humidity I talked about(?), how bout’ you come here when the temp says 90 degrees, but the weatherman is warning the heat index factor is 115….and it’s just a touch harder to breath when along with that there is 90% moisture in the air.

I hear ya. The kids do play outside in the snow even when schools close.. And humidity, whew, that does make the heat much more intolerable. We’re not as bad as Houston, but 100-115 PLUS humidity is what we live with sometimes, many times for days on end.

I’ll take a 100 degree day with low humidity anyday over the snow. I’m just a southern girl at heart.

I wasn’t trying to offend anyone… or give the “I’m better than you” treatment. I simply think it’s common sense. Also, 90% of our roads don’t get plowed for 2 days after a big storm anyway. Nobody drives around the city or highways with chains either, those are reserved for very slow “canyon driving”. I agree, most other states don’t get a lot of practice with that kind of weather, but a lot of it is common sense too. If it’s wet, slow down. If it’s wet and cold slow down even more.

I am with you. Common sense would tell you if the roads are wet and you had below freezing temps or still have freezing temps there is no reason to drive like a bat out of hell. Everyone of them were traveling too fast for the conditions. Of course, hitting black ice also speeds your vehicle up. 4×4 won’t help you in this instance. The problem here is when you put men behind a truck or vehicle that has 4×4 capabilities; they get a little too cocky.

I hit black ice when I was in Germany, I was traveling about 15 mph and hit a patch and wound up in a shallow ditch and sped up to about 20 mph before all was said and done. That was my first experience with black ice.

What is a snow plow. In Montana, we’ve heard of these things, but few have seen one. Also, what is this “salt” stuff I hear about. Does it make the road tastes better.

From watching this video, it’s obvious many of these people were driving too dang fast for the conditions. SUVs and trucks are the worst offenders. They believe 4WD makes their tires stick to icy roads. I hope nobody got injured.

@BASSCHICK I live in a rural county just north of Columbus, and have lived in/worked in Columbus for more than a decade. We do have snow plows/salt trucks. so I am not sure where that came from. As for the driving in a foot vs Columbus shutting down over an 1″, I agree Immormon. I grew up on the snow belt in Ohio and we had very different “emergency” standards than are in Columbus. We also learned to slow down, easy on the break/gas, etc. I think our issue here is too many people think 4×4 or suv = never lose grip on the road.

When I lived in North Carolina, the people there had no concept of how to drive on icy or snowy roads. None. And really, why should they? They virtually never get any. When the weather man called for a better than 50% chance of snow, good luck getting staples at the grocery store. They’d be out of milk 5 minutes after the broadcast. Shortly after we got a new superintendent of schools, transplanted from the mountain areas of Tennessee, we got an ice storm. Being from the North, it was nothing for us, but it was a big deal down there. The superintendent kept the schools open far passed when everyone was telling him to close. There were a tremendous number of accidents on the way home. Even the bus drivers had extreme difficulty, let alone the high school kids who could barely drive on dry pavement. Different parts of the country have different experiences and different ways, and the safety of kids is paramount. Close the schools when the infrastructure can’t support transporting them safely.

Did anybody notice that the most out of control were SUV’s. I have nothing against SUV’s, but I have observed that some of their owners think they are invincible. Truth it, they slide on ice as well, if not better, than any other vehicle.

Gotta love the people that own SUV‘s and Pickup’s “just to have a ‘big’ truck”, but don’t have one clue even how to put the vehicle in four wheel drive. “Well…4WD is only for climbing rocks and pulling” Uhhhhh…….nope. That’s why God made 4 High and 4 Low… (It’s called “control”).
But on the other end, I looovvveee to watch the ‘city people’ have their big ol’ four wheelers and ACTUALLY believe they can stop just as fast as they can start. Now that’s better than watching the Superbowl.

I agree… being from this area in OH… certain roads were MISERY yesterday morning. Many people were slowing down (obviously not the few shown in this clip) and STILL struggling with the black ice. Typically roads are treated with a brine solution to help prevent black ice, but in this instance nothing had been done (to any roads it seemed…). I’d rather drive in heavy/deep snow that on black ice.

When I use to power-walk to work, I encountered black-ice on the sidewalks…alittle snow covering & down you go. Had acouple of close–calls when driving too. The crashing & skidding, don’t mean to make light of it, but makes me remember the times(in my 20′s) at the dirt-road racetracks. I drove acouple of times in “Powder-Puff” stock-car races & had one opportunity to be in a demolition-derby (end of season event). Still can hear & feel the crashes so when I was intentionally getting and doing the hitting..when you are driving & minding your own business, it can be real scary if other cars are around. I have an SUV 4×4 but respect the road conditions ALWAYS!
