Will a UCLA Prof Lose His Job For Sticking to Science Over Politics?

Dwayne Whitney owns a trucking business. He started it decades ago with only one truck. Since then, his company has grown. Now he has 18 trucks and 20 employees. But that growth may soon be stunted by the state of California.

“The State of California says my trucks are killing people,” Whitney told ReasonTV. “What do you say to that?”

Will a UCLA Prof Lose His Job For Sticking to Science Over Politics?

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) said this: that the pollution emitted from buses and trucks contributes to 2,000 deaths a year in California.

Rubbish! says UCLA’s Dr. James Enstrom.

Will a UCLA Prof Lose His Job For Sticking to Science Over Politics?

That number is probably closer to zero, he says. While CARB wants to render Whitney’s trucks illegal, Enstrom has research that could keep Whitney’s fleet on the road.

Enstrom was a member of UCLA’s Department of Environmental Health Sciences and he authored a 2005 study–the largest, most detailed study on the matter to date–on the relationship between diesel particulates and premature deaths. Diesel particulates are a type of pollutant emitted from trucks. The study found no relationship at all between those pollutants and premature deaths.

Was Enstrom rewarded for his groundbreaking research?

No. CARB ignored his report and UCLA told him that after 34 years at the school, he was out of a job. So much for academic freedom. “I have felt very intimidated by this process,” Enstrom says.

Adam Kissel of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) observes that ”The environmental regulation machine in powerful in California….When Dr. Enstrom went up against that machine he was retaliated against.”

Enstrom’s story is detailed in this excellent ReasonTV report:

Twelve members of California‘s state legislature caught wind of Enstrom’s story and have come to his defense as well. The twelve legislators may “promptly hold a hearing in Sacramento on this matter,“ arguing that ”the integrity of the University of California requires that faculty have the freedom to publish research findings, without fear of potential retribution from those in higher positions.”

Kissel explains over at FIRE’s website:

Twelve members of the California State Legislature have written UCLA Chancellor Gene D. Block and Provost Scott Waugh a letter decrying UCLA’s treatment of longtime Department of Environmental Health Sciences faculty member James E. Enstrom. Professor Enstrom was let go from UCLA after some 34 years under circumstances detailed by FIRE and described in a video released yesterday from Reason.tv.

Led by Chief Republican Whip Dan Logue, Assemblymember, Third District, the legislators write that they “remain deeply troubled by the University’s inability to provide credible cause for Dr. Enstrom’s dismissal, and the appearance of political interference in the University’s academic discourse.”

They also raise concerns “as to the integrity of this process,” since UCLA‘s allegation that Enstrom failed to meet his department’s “minimum requirements” appears to have been based on a document dating back to 1995 that Enstrom had never seen and which might not be at all applicable to Enstrom’s position. (I wrote about this document a couple of weeks ago.) The legislators write that “this policy of minimum requirements has neither been enforced with the Department, nor has the document been provided to Dr. Enstrom despite his specific request. This seems arbitrary and capricious and undermines the legitimacy of the Department’s reasons for dismissal.”

Kissel says, “If Dr. Enstrom loses his job because he expressed his academic freedom, then it‘s a message to other researchers that you’d better not rock the boat because you might be next.”

California, if you dont want to kill people why not save millions of lives by letting the water flow on the crops that need the water to avoid people from dieng of starvation using a small fish as an exscuse. The people know it is only an exscuse for the reason, what kind of people would do that. It says volumes about your kind. Lotus.

Well they can’t handle the truth since it does not fit their agenda. Global warming is the Earth tilting on its axis by a few degrees but tell that to Al Gore. Diesel particulates don’t float in the air like gasoline they are to heavy, so they can’t get to the lungs and if it does they are to large on a molecular level to cause a cancer. They only feel that diesel is a carcinogen because it is made from oil instead of corn-oils, peanut-oils and other more natural sources of fuel for cars and trucks. The “Diesel” engine was originally designed to run on natural oils for fuel, since the inventor was nearly killed trying to use coal dust.

As I recall, the so called scientist who’s research was the main impetus for the bill that would outlaw diesel trucks in California turned out to be a fraud. We often scratch our heads when reading through human history trying to figure out how the people could have been so blind. This is how. Peer pressure and political correctness run amuck is often the downfall of civilizations. Even otherwise smart people lose their objectivity. Their desire to please their friends and to be accepted at the next cocktail party overwhelm their ability to reason.

      HOG…
Don‘t know if your moniker refers to you’re riding a motorcycle, but if it does, you know full-well that motorcycle manufacturers have had to make a California-emissions acceptical bike for years. The CARB (Ca. Air Resourses Board) is an example of complete uselessness, especially when applied to motorcycles.
Now, there are lots of bikes in Ca., but, really, how much of the total emissions from internal-combustion engines could they possibly cause? Motorcycle manufacturers, and the general population, should be encouraged to ride. Replace a million cars in Ca. with m/c’s and you alleviate a noticeable chunk of the congestion/pollution that the radicals whine about.

Of course, the reality is that the radical environmental zealots would still stiffle motorcycle manufacturers with useless regulation. You see….you cannot appease extremists, whether they be Muslims or ‘Environmentalists’.

      A most clear view.

Stalin in his view of civility created a similar religion in the USSR. Government knows best. Citizens that do not accept the gospel of Party were not allowed into the church. Only true believers practiced this new religion. They practiced ‘I am my brothers keeper’ that had holy validation by the daily collective communion – . A paltry, compared to Stalin’s machine, historical example can be found in the Gestapo methodology, tell on they neighbor if he had a Torah. What did Herra Stalin do with the non believer?

The then new Russian religion, has in most part, metamorphosed into the similar ‘faith’ bound concept here in the United States in the mid 1930′s via the Social Justice priest. The missionaries of this faith did see the inquisition of Stalin but believed that the new faith was still valid but only needed more capitol -money of industry to produce the utopia.

I am inclined to buy future cars from ford just to show my support, but I will definitely look into the roll over thing first, thanks for the info. People say Ford got a bail out to but technically is wasn’t a bail out it was more like a loan. The difference being, GM’s a bailout because they had to change their business structure in order to receive the bailout money. Ford did not have to change personnel, or policy because they were more stable, did not receive as much money, and have already paid it back.

I’m not taking a position on this.

But I will say this: if you think car exhaust isn’t bad for human health then maybe you should try an experiment: sit behind a muffler and breath what comes out. No don’t do that! Of course don’t do that. It’ll kill you. And that stuff that come out of the mufler doesn’t magically go away. It’s in the air you breath it everyday no matter where you live.

Certainly if if sit behind a muffler and inhale the exhaust it’s not just bad, it’ll kill you in short order. Those toxins that come out of a car don’t vanish into space. They don’t disappear. Prior to EPA rules those toxins were seen daily in many major cities in the form of “smog” which thankfully, thanks to the EPA, is a word we don’t use much anymore.

In any case, the point at which those toxins accumulate to the degree where there is a measurable effect on morbity is unknown.

Why did the US ban lead additives from gasoline and paint? (1985 I believe). Because lead, which is a neurotoxin was showing up in blood of every American. Lead is a neurotoxin. You know, it kills brain cells.

I’m not taking a position on this professor or the trucking business guy. But what I am saying is that the chemicals that come out of a muffler are nasty and toxic. And they don’t go away, they don’t vanish into space. They don’t magically disappear. They stay in the air that we all breath and accumulate. And the concentration increases every day.

If you think that liberalism is not bad for you, try this experiment. Go stand behind your typical commie liberal slob and take a deep breath. No, i’m kidding, don’t do that. Seriously, don’t do that.

Even after a conservative landslide victory, the vermin does not vanish out in to space. They do not just magically go away. They are still in our cities everywhere, chipping away at our freedoms and annoying us no matter where we live.

Why did the American people vote them out of office? (2010 I believe). Because socialism is a toxic fungus that is showing up in schools and universities everywhere.
You can see many progressives gather daily in major cities, in the form of “unions”, which is a word we hopefully won’t use much in the future.

Certainly, if you spend too much time in liberally infested area’s, you will want to kill yourself. Again, the nonsense that emanates from them is toxic, so beware.

They do not go away. They accumulate. They are always there. You vote them out, and they come back. They are nasty and toxic and they poison the atmosphere. Listening to their drivel kills brain cells.

But I’m not going to take a position

THERIGHTSOFBILLY, I agree with you on many points. I’m not sure where I would find a “typical commie liberal slob” or even any “commie liberal slob” of whatever kind.

Now having said that, I‘d be less than honest if I didn’t admit that I am commie liberal slob. I’m not sure how typical but I am a slob. And I am a liberal. Not a commie really, more a capitalist very grateful for my salary, which is more than most in this country and more than I deserve given that my knowledge so specialized. .

I shower once day, unlike many commie slobs. So in that regard I don’t offend many people. But I agree that many commie slobs don’t and are vermin-like in their personal habits and their ability to survive in inhospitable environments.

Other than that I agree with you. But I also think that the average person is going to vote Democrat in the next election. Let’s bet.

Gee, and yet these same liberals led by Obama want to let Mexican trucks with much lower emissions standards and *cough cough* Mexican gas dominate our interstates. Californians still want goods trucked into their cities, trust me. This is an effort to further displace American truckers with Mexican truckers.

      http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20110304/ts_csm/367464

Write your congressman and tell them this is b.s. This will lead to more deaths on the highway, more pollution, less American jobs, and about a 10,000% increase in narcotics coming across the border.

We have to stop this! I live in Az, anyone else living here can attest to the work on Grand Ave. It’s the future route for the Mexican truckers, Grand to the 303. I’m sure their trucks have WAY LESS emissions than OURS! This is obscene. How long are we supposed to lay down and take it? NOT calling for violence. Calling for voices. Why is it Mexicans can drive diesels through our country, but Americans can’t? Why do Brazilians get to collect oil off our coasts, but not Americans? Why are American hands being tied behind their backs? BECAUSE WE ARE TAKING IT! That’s why.

Does this nonsense really surprise anyone? This is the exact reason California is in the shape it is.

Environmental extremist have abused the Endangered Species Act to close the Cal. desert to off-road riding, thereby robbing individuals and families of recreational enjoyment, and many in the ATV industry of jobs. Little matter to the extremist, obviously.

Logging, and more jobs, have been crushed in Ca. and elsewhere by abuse of the ESA.
      Oil exploration? Ditto!
      Water for farmers? Ditto!
      Development? You guessed it!

That’s what groups like the Tea Party are fighting against. Of course, the Left is portraying the TP as racist/bigots. All very predictable.

But, really, what has/is happening in Ca. has happened all over the country. That is why I predict that, at some time, you will have to pick sides. Either you are for the restoration of the US as a Constitutional Republic as originally intended, or a Communist Hell, as the special-interest lobby will
surely have us in due time.

      13th imam….
Your post is a good example of the special-interest I mentioned elsewhere in this blog.
Of course, I/we could use many other examples of where the anti-American

Socialists/Communists/Liberals have attacked our very way of life. Over-spending on useless social programs, feel-good-over-spending on schools that have failed miserably, watering-down penalties for criminals and then wasting money on programs in our prisons. You could go on and on.

California is the archetypical example of how life will be under Socialism/Communism. Why do you think the USSR failed? China only succeeds because the US signed an ill-advised trade agreement with them and, might I add have no environmental regulations to hinder them. I always say that the easiest way to take down any adversary of the US would be to move the California leftist machine to that adversary and let them run it in totality for a couple of years.

JZS, there was one (age 20) who worked with my daughter-in-law at a large, well known appliance store. She took a bath and washed her hair once a week (didn’t use deoderant) because she didn’t want to waste water or pollute with shampoo/soap. Her boyfriend did the same. Consequently it didn’t matter if you were in front/behind/beside, they loved Obama and his policies and you smelled them long before you saw them. They were right and that was that.

Strictly speaking, evolution is not a theory. The scientific method typically starts with an observation. Then, a “hypothesis” is developed in a effort to explain that which is being observed. If the hypothesis can be proven under controlled laboratory conditions, it becomes a “theory”. If that process can then be shown to occur in nature, it becomes a “scientific fact”. Scientific “facts” are subject to change as more data are collected and evaluated. To date, I haven’t seen the process of evolution proven under controlled laboratory conditions. Therefore, evolution is nothing more than a hypothesis within the context of the scientific method.

Read Lee Stroebel if you haven’t (I hope I spelled his name correctly), he was a determined atheist and set about trying to disprove christianity. He met with various scientific and historical experts, and after his two year study he found that he couldn’t disprove it and became christian. He has several books, one “The Case for Creation” is a detailed account of interviews with scientists and professors that openly support Creationism. It was very interesting, and the format is set up in a case study fashion.

as for the “theory of evolution”,i have only one question-if we “evolved” from apes, why the hell are apes still roaming the earth?

@ JZS……for someone who typically like to espouse the merits of science it is amazing that you so quickly abandoned that post when it doesn’t quite line up with your environmental agenda. Many things are beneficial in certain quantities and harmful in other quantities, ie radiation, vitamins, CO2…..You apparently don’t understand this given your example of breathing exhaust coming out of your car directly. You do understand that most of it is CO2 and that plants love it and go crazy for it, right? Carbon monoxide rises in the atmosphere and through chemical changes with sunlight as a catalyst produces more ozone for our protection. The Nitrogen dioxide falls to the Earth in rain where the nitrogen can actually help plants grow. Not everything is as it seems JZS.. Radiation is really really bad, right???? Then why do we use it to treat cancer? Small incremental levels of radiation have actually decreased cancer rates by 25% compared to those who haven’t had some of the same exposure. Let’s remain consistent and allow science to discover what happens rather than trying to make something fit into a preconceived environmental agenda.
