Will Jeff Foxworthy‘s ’American Bible Challenge’ Game Show Be a Success — or a Major Failure?

This is a crosspost from Beliefnet.com.

The Dallas shopping mall’s atrium was filled with excited hopefuls of all ages. They stood patiently in line, applications in hand, hoping to be the next nationwide TV game show winners.

But on this new show they wouldn’t be answering “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” trivia. Nor would they show off their “Price Is Right” knowledge or their “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” grip on pop music.

Will Jeff Foxworthys Bible Trivia Show Be a Success or Failure?

Instead, they were cramming, last minute, flipping through Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy and the Song of Solomon. And the Second Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians.

They were clutching Bibles, glancing over New Testament flash cards and hoping they would get to appear on what the Game Show Network is taking a big risk on – and what could be America’s next TV phenomenon. With full support from the network’s Sony Corporation owners, GSN is auditioning potential contestants nationwide and has signed on comedian Jeff Foxworthy to host the American Bible Challenge.

Is it a crazy idea? Well, in its 25th season Wheel of Fortune is just a dressed-up children’s game, yet it continues to draw record audiences year after year. The Price Is Right is in its 39th year – little more than a test of how well you’ve kept up with grocery prices – and it’s a money machine for its owners. And Jeopardy? For a quarter century, America has watched geeks and eggheads create correct questions to trivia answers. Yet each of those three shows earns millions in advertising dollars due to the millions of faithful viewers – daily regulars who schedule everything around Drew Carey, Alex Trebeck and Vanna White.

Will Jeff Foxworthys Bible Trivia Show Be a Success or Failure?

So, reasoned the corporate bigwigs at Sony and GSN, why not a game show built around the bestselling book of all time? More copies of the Bible are in print than any other written work. According to the New York Times, more than 40,000 Bibles are sold daily. Even more are given away daily by such groups as Gideons International and the American Bible Society. The Bible’s continuing sales numbers exceed those of even the most popular novels. Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games – none even come close. “If you want to get at the real best sellers,” said the manager of one of the largest bookstores in New York to a Times reporter, the standout champion of all time is the Bible.

So, why wouldn’t a game show based on its pages be a big success? GSN is believing the Holy Bible’s universal appeal and eternal promise will give them the next “Deal or No Deal.”

It would seem that the big prime-time hits such as “Deal,” “Millionaire,” The Singing Bee, “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?“ and ”Don’t Forget The Lyrics” would be the giants of the game show world. Actually, the powerhouses are three shows that have lasted year after year: “The Price Is Right,“ ”Wheel of Fortune“ and ”Jeopardy.“ In fourth place is ”Family Feud.” Fallen by the wayside, but probably due for resurrection in the not-too-distant future are such old favorites as “Password,“ ”Hollywood Squares,“ ”Let’s Make a Deal“ and the ”Match Game.”

But the Game Show Network is looking to shake things up. They think they’ve found a vast, untapped market – those millions of viewers who couldn’t care less about pop music or sports trivia, but who can recite the all names of the ancient judges of Israel, can detail the major events in each chapter of the Book of Acts, and without blinking can rattle off the Seven Churches of Revelation’s Chapter 2.

Will Jeff Foxworthys Bible Trivia Show Be a Success or Failure?

After all, for decades Sunday schools, children’s church, Wednesday night youth groups, church camps and overnight retreats have featured “Bible Bowl,” “Bible Trivia” and “Sword Drill” contests and their many variations.

“A good game show can last for many, many, many decades,” says network executive Bob Boden. “Price is Right is a perfect example. Price is Right’s core skill and core play along value is about what things cost. And everybody, everybody relates to that. That’s a show that can go on forever. They’ve created a variety of game formats within the show — over 70 to date and each one of them is, in and of itself, compelling and engaging. Wheel of Fortune is a very simple game, a childhood game that everybody remembers, hangman, combined with a tremendous spectacle of shopping, winning money. In its current incarnation, big, big prizes for solving puzzles. It’s a show that will be on for quite a long time. Jeopardy is a show that very simply portrays human intelligence and everybody either wants to be smart or thinks they are smart or is enamored by people who are smart.

“And no matter how you watch Jeopardy, whatever of those three ways you watch it, or in a given episode, it could be all three. Family Feud is a show that you cannot help watching without yelling at the TV. You just can’t. Every time a question is asked you have an answer for it and you can’t believe that the people on the show didn’t give your answer.”

“The American Bible Challenge” has the same potential.

Will Jeff Foxworthys Bible Trivia Show Be a Success or Failure?

David Schiff

A casting call in Texas for the new show was a no-brainer says David Schiff, senior vice president of programming and development. Explaining in his best TV jargon, he says Dallas was an easy choice since “we have a big Southern skew, we have a big African American audience, and we want to go to where our audience is. There’s a big faith-based community as well, and we like what Dallas represents.”

Auditions have also taken place in Atlanta, Los Angeles and Chicago.

But the American Bible Challenge will have a twist. Nobody’s going to become a millionaire. Instead, winners become philanthropists. They give away every cent they earn. And part of the audition is selling the producers on the contestant’s favorite causes.

Schiff admits that making the Bible into a game show is potentially controversial, but after all, “the Bible is the most popular book of all time. Period, end of sentence. There’s no denying that it has an incredibly continuing relevance in hundreds of millions of lives. We believe it is perfectly acceptable for us to take that material and those facts and turn it into a game. We’re excited about this, and we have the ultimate confidence that this is going to be a really well-received series.”

Eighteen teams of three contestants will play in the first six episodes. Only six winning teams will advance to the seventh and eighth episodes. In the ninth and final show, one winning team will triumph over all the others.

Contestants will answer fact-based questions about the Bible, such as “Who were the passengers on Noah’s Ark?” and “Which Apostle sliced off somebody’s ear with a sword when trying to prevent Jesus’ arrest?”

The show’s slogan is “If you don’t know the Bible, you haven’t got a prayer.”

Will Jeff Foxworthys Bible Trivia Show Be a Success or Failure?

Schiff says you also don’t have to be a biblical scholar, however a head for biblical trivia won’t hurt. Can you recite the names of the 12 Disciples? Can you identify the first person to see Jesus after His resurrection? Which words describe Delilah: a) A high priestess of Baal; b) Peter and Andrew’s mother; c) Samson’s barber; or d) the author of the Song of Solomon?

But is there enough interest in the Bible today to create a game show around it?

“We knew in Los Angeles when we did our first casting call that we had a hit on our hands,” says Schiff. “So many teenagers and 20-somethings showed up — which was not at all what we’d expected. Some of them had jailhouse tattoos, others spray-on tans. We had retirees and professionals and little kids – all possible demographics.

“We’ve heard moms and dads say ‘There is so little that we can do as a shared experience as a family these days’ – there’s nothing on TV that the family can watch together. This is the first show in a very long time that will transcend generations – ages 8 to 80 watching together and shouting the answer at the screen. When you see these people and hear the stories of our contestants, you know that America is going to fall in love with this show.

“Some have faced very difficult challenges in their lives. Others are just ordinary people like you and me. Some of them have been through terrible times and hit rock bottom. That brought them to their faith, which is very real to them. They love the Bible. They love its stories and its heroes.

Will Jeff Foxworthys Bible Trivia Show Be a Success or Failure?

“You know, you hear these days that there are so very few role models,” said Schiff. “Well, you are going to fall in love with some of our contestants. You are going to be inspired by what some of them are doing in their day-to-day lives to help other people. The neat thing about this game is they are using their Bible knowledge to go out and be an agent of change in the world.”

And, yes, none of the contestants get to keep the money they win.

“That’s right,” chuckles Schiff. “Nobody gets to keep the money. But look at the people standing in line to be contestants. Some of them have been here for hours before we even opened, waiting to register, knowing full well that they’re not going to get rich. They’re winning money for a charity that is near to their hearts.”

How did GSN land Foxworthy?

Will Jeff Foxworthys Bible Trivia Show Be a Success or Failure?

“He is our dream host,” says Schiff. “We weren’t sure we could get him because he’s a very busy guy obviously. But to find somebody who is so endearing and appealing to the public. He’s hilarious and talented, but he is also somebody whose faith is so authentic. He lives his faith. When he talks about his faith and its role in his life, it comes though as being so real. So combine that with his great sense of humor and how warm he is with the contestants, he is absolutely perfect.”

Is the Game Show Network stepping out on a limb with this? Isn’t a game show based on the Bible risky?

“I actually don’t believe that it is,” says Schiff. “This is a show where everybody is invited to watch, everybody is invited to join in. The Bible’s significance as a significant part of world culture no matter what your belief system is. The beauty of the Bible is that it weaves in history and geography and mythology and art and music and language. There’s so much here in this tapestry that I think the people who have never gone to a Sunday school or who haven’t been – in my case, in many years – will find the show very educational, very interesting, very provocative and very inclusive.

“We don’t want to exclude anybody and we have not.

“The purpose of this show is to entertain, not convert anybody. We invite everybody to come in and celebrate this piece of cultural history and enjoy the fun of fascinating, enthusiastic contestants whose hearts are obviously in the right place – and who you’re going find yourself cheering for – praying they’ll win the big money for a great cause that is so important to them.”

You know I went into a Bible class in college fairly cynical and I learned a lot. It was a much more compelling book than I previously believed. However, it brought me to Orthodox Judaism, so I don’t know if that will be what you consider a success story.

I hope it succeeds. But more importantly we all need to fix the problem at the individual level. Then we can expect a better world. This bit a scripture stands alone and doesn’t even need to relate to other scripture. It’s evident this is OUR problem.

2Ti 3:1-5: This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

We each need to repent and cease in our own iniquity. We best wise up. Global judgement is on it’s way.

The gay nazis? Really? And hate to break it to you, but it’s always the radical Christians who are protesting television shows. The radical atheists are smug jerks but they usually have better things to do than try to boycott sponsors. On the other hand, I can see Christians being offended at making their book into a game show – well what they call their book. And the Bible as Literature school of thought has been angering religious people since the 1980s.

I just wonder if the show will bring up where the Bible makes poop jokes like in 1 Samuel 5:12 or the name “Bealzbub” which is literally Lord of the Flies which sounds spooky until you think about where flies tend to congregate.

It’s like whenever the Bible wanted to criticize/denigrate pagans it went straight to the poop joke. And don’t get me wrong – I think that’s awesome. It’s just not something that most would like to know. Of course, when I edited http://www.amazon.com/She-Nailed-Stake-Through-Head/dp/0976654679 a lot of reviewers thought that I was making fun of the Bible. But I wasn’t. I which they would make movies of the Bible. there are some Italian made for TV films from late 1990s – early 2000s but with bigger budgets & real Christians who know Scripture working on them, Scripture films would be awesome! the Italian film makers often rewrote the books they filmed. in the film about King David, the Israelite army & populace are oppressed by King David so they turn to Absalom – that is so not what happens. Absalom stands in the gate of the city & tells those who pass by what he would do if only his father would allow it so the young men, who are like him, follow Absalom. but the Italian film makers used a modern, pc reason. there’s no need to rewrite Scripture. it’s exciting & wonderful as it is. perhaps this game show will succeed & Hollywood will begin to see that we want films that lift us up rather than make us feel as if we need a shower & the Bible is the perfect place to begin!

Most Bible based movies are pretty terrible. I remember the one about Sodom and Gomorrah in which Lot is leading the slaves out of Sodom (no really) and then there’s King David with Richard Gere doing a funky chicken in front of the Ark. There are some Jesus movies that have their charms but many Bible based movies just assume that the audience is 5.

On the other hand, there are some good Bible-based literary works like Paradise Lost or God KNows by Joseph Heller or She Nailed a Stake Through His Head: Tales of Biblical Terror.

I have a challenge, show me where the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday? You can’t because it never was. The Roman Catholic church changed the day in a massive ‘pagan baptism’ in the days of Constantine. How do you get pagans to join your church? Just rename the gods from Jupiter to Peter and Isis, Horus, Set to Joseph, Mary and Jesus and you there you have it. Change the worship day from the Sabbath of creation and the 4th commandment to the day of the sun and everyone is happy. Don’t be fooled by this non-sense. Revelation 14 : 7 “Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” Worship the God of creation. You know, the one who made everything in 6 days and rested on the 7th. God bless.

Nobody said the sabbath was changed to Sunday. Christians worship on Sunday, the first day of the week because 1) Christ rose from the dead on the first day of the week (Sunday); and, 2) meeting on Sunday shows the fulfillment of the old covenant and beginning the new covenant with His believers. The sabbath is still intact and recognized by those who are still committed to the old covenant.

You are correct. They (the RCC) did change the Sabbath and the other ordinances. That is why judgment will come upon the earth.Isaiah 24:5,6 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

to: @bomustgo: Regardless the “RCC” action, the Sabbath (meaning ‘seventh’) is still, to this day, the Sabbath…it is celebrated on our Saturday by those who still follow covenant established with through Moses. The covenant established through Christ (the everlasting one) fullfilled and put away that requirement because He did what man could not..anything established by man is temporary. How can the actions of mankind change what God Himself has established? Besides, the Apostle Paul said “One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God.” (Romans 14:5-6) So, who are we to judge on what day a person worships? (refer to verse 4) Christ has set us free from bondage to the law.

the Sabbath is still on Saturday.
Christians began worshiping on Sunday, because that is the day Jesus rose from the dead.
The Church Jesus created headed by Peter the first Pope decided to worship on Sunday.
Jesus gave them that authority. Also the Bible says not everything Jesus told the apostles was written down, how do you know he didn’t tell them to worship on Sunday.

      By Faith,

You are the worst offender. In fact, your bile is evident in your post here. One only has to look at your posts to see your ranting. You are at war against anyone who dares challenge Catholic theology.

BTW, you still trying to claim Anabaptists baptized babies? Lol…

No human being ever had the power to “change” the Sabbath. The Sabbath of the Old Testament is gone. It was abolished when Christ drew his last breath on the cross of Calvary. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the Old Testament is no longer in effect. People talk about the Old Testamanent Sabbath as if it could somehow be separated from the rest of the Jewish law. Do you observe Jewish law? Do you live as a Jew? Do you refuse to eat “unclean” animals? Then why practice the Sabbath? Christians worship God on the first day of the week, because that’s the example that we have in the Scriptures. That’s what the earliest Christians did in the first century. So that’s what we do today. As is always the case with the Bible, the answer is too simple for many to accept.

This coming from the guy who calls people names when they prove him wrong.

      Trail of Blood is FICTION.

The author JM Carroll said so himself. “(Baptist) are protestants, heirs of the reformes”

The Anabaptist doctrine of baptism was all over the map. According to Lee: “Some Anabaptists believed babies were ‘safe.’ Others believed they were lost—because deemed to be incapable of professing, or even of possessing, any faith in Christ at all. Again, some Anabaptists believed baptism was merely a sign of faith; others believed it made prior faith secure. Yet others believed faith was vain without baptism. When Anabaptist came into being they baptized there children but later rebaptisted as adults.

      Heh, lol!

I rest my case! Anabaptists NEVER baptized babies because they recognized that a believer has to profess faith then is baptized. Yet you continue to argue against historical fact. Which only shows your own ignorance.

4 posts in reply? Lol, you certainly are emotional. Who is even arguing about JM Caroll?

Your problem is you are too caught up in traditions that are meaningless. Why not just turn to the Bible? You might realize that names above a door are meaningless. Are you a born again believer? The only question is what you do with Jesus Christ.

BTW, Peter is NOT a Pope. Just an apostle, no better than John, Paul, or anyone else. Just a man, as is the priest, bishop and pope you worship. Glad I am not suckered into that kind of corrupt tradition!

      Read your Bible…

Just relax and don’t waste your time with it. Just as I have learned not to waste my time with you.

If you are indeed born again then just accept my love and go in peace my brother…

If not…Maybe you should start by reading your Bible…Even the Catholic apocrypha…I certainly have as I have read most of the church fathers and gnostic books and anything else I can find.

Troll, You are very aptly named.
4 posts from me makes me emotional, what does 5 from you mean?

You seem to think your ignorance is somehow upsetting to me. I post historical data that proves the Anabaptist began around the time of the reformers and baptized both infants and adults. Don’t accept the truth I don’t care.
You were so offended you called me names last time (very Christian of you), now you claim I am “sputtering, getting all red-faced”. This is what professionals call projection.

Because you typed in capital letters, that settles it. You claim historical fact, yet you offer ZERO historical facts. You claim to have read the Bible, yet you do not follow every word from the Bible.
You said: “every time religion is mentioned some chucklehead will pop in and try to make an issue over irrelevant theological differences” The first time I ever saw you post on this website, that is exactly what you did. Then when your error was corrected you started with the name calling.

Crawl back under your bridge, Troll. Your hypocrisy is showing.

The Sabbath is eternal. But it’s for Jews. You Christians can do whatever you want. When I was converting to Judaism I was not allowed to keep the Shabbos completely I would always have to do something like carrying or writing two letters in order to violate the Shabbat. Eventually I found a loophole in which the Goyish day can go from midnight to midnight while the Jewish day is from sundown to sundown so when I would light candles at the end of Shabbos (on Saturday night) it would be a violation of the goyish day (which I was still doing) but not the Shabbos per se. Thankfully, I finally converted and could just follow Shabbos as it was intended.

But yeah, Christians, celebrate whatever you want. The Sabbath is not for you.
