Will Man-made Global Warming Become Required Learning for K-12?

Activists seek to impose man made global warming education in public schoolsEditor’s note: In the September issue of TheBlaze Magazine, Liz Klimas exposes the fight underway to tweak K-12 public school science instruction standards to include making sure students know all about man-made climate change. Using education curriculum research and interviews with people on both sides of the global warming debate, Klimas details the effort to determine what American kids will be required to know about climate change — starting in Kindergarten.

Activists seek to impose man made global warming education in public schools

For years now, man-made climate change—and what, if anything, to do about it—has been fiercely debated by the world’s most-renown scientists, had a growing presence in the plots of the world’s highest governing bodies and been hyped by the mainstream media. It now is trickling down to one of the most fundamental and powerful methods of disseminating information to a population: the public education system.

Although climate change, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll, falls in last place as a concern for voting Americans, the issue at the K-12 level continues to press forward as alarmists remain determined to convince the children of “unconcerned” Americans.

In fact, the National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science plan to release a second draft of proposed, new K-12 science standards for public review this fall. Thus far, 26 states have committed to the development and implementation of the “Next Generation Science Standards” (NGSS).

The new standards would serve to update documents that for the last 15 years have been used to set the teaching criteria for science and, according to the organizations behind the standards, would be “grounded in the most current research on science and science learning … [identifying] the science all K-12 students should know.”

Although global warming activists would lament that only 26 states have committed themselves to the standards, many parents and educators question just what climate science is truly imperative enough that it be required knowledge for K-12 students.

[...]

Joy Pullmann, an education research fellow for the free-market think tank The Heartland Institute, has called out the “re-education campaign” of the NGSS as integrating “global warming and other overplayed worries” into the science classroom. When the first draft of NGSS became available to the public in May, Pullmann reviewed the program and found that it is promoting climate alarmism on a topic where the available data is already “highly debatable among climate scientists,” namely how humans hurt the environment and are responsible for global warming.

Activists seek to impose man made global warming education in public schoolsFor instance, she found that, in the NGSS, fourth graders would learn to “explain differences between renewable and non-renewable sources of energy”; middle schoolers would be educated to understand that “human activities, such as the release of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, are major factors in the current rise in Earth’s mean surface temperature (‘global warming’)”; and high schoolers would be taught that “though the magnitudes of human impacts are greater than they have ever been, so too are human abilities to model, predict, and manage current and future impacts.”

Of course, merely pointing out the debate that continues to rage regarding human impact on climate change and suggesting the NGSS ought to be reworked to reflect that fact causes the global warming crowd to rally its own scientists to discredit those questioning the data, claiming skeptics are not experts in the field or not scientists at all.

ok class open your books; The climate changes, everyday, every year. We are to be stewards of the earth. We recognize that for profits sake businesses and farmers dump all kinds of toxic crap into the air and water. Lately, China is guilty.
Our politicians legislate drugs in our drinking water, like fluoride.

Lastly, subscribing to “green energy” is a propaganda
employed by elitist capitalists intent on environmental fascism – profitting from the mercury filled lightbulb made with few regulatory stipulations to keep the Chinese worker or environment safe from said harm.Or, wind farms slaughtering birds……….

If the U.S. quit using all fossil fuels, it would hardly make a dent in global emissions, but it sure would make a dent in the world’s economy – unless we came up with some new energy source. We need R and D for new energy ideas. It could be like the race for space and all of its spinoff jobs and technology. In the meantime, how about just planting more trees around the world? No one mentions that lots of trees that absorb CO2 have been cut down or burned down and not replaced in the last hundred years. They’re no longer absorbing CO2. Maybe that‘s why it’s increased. Of course, that’s a very simple idea, and no one can make money or political points on it, so it wouldn’t be considered.

How about teaching how the climate is changing (and if you deny it is changing, you just have your head in the sand) but with the truth being we simply do not know beyond all doubt what is causing it. Is it cyclic? Quite possible. Is man adding to it? Quite possible. How much is the question. Climate is changing, that’s for sure. It seems to do this every so often.

What we should be teaching in science class is that we should be good stewards of the earth. We don’t want to pee in the river when people downstream are drinking from it. We don’t want to bury toxic waste on land where people without legal resources cannot object to it. We shouldn’t be putting carcinogens into the atmosphere in such quantity as to cause respiratory problems for people. And we certainly shouldn’t be clear-cutting important forests like the Amazon.

Good earth stewardship is smart. Smart people do not utilize all their resources only to run out years down the road… they replant trees they are harvesting, ensure crops are replanted each year in sufficient quantity and so much more.

NEWS FLASH: the climate changes, always has, it will until God closes the final chapter on this Earth. It is all part of a system that is full of life. We have had massive drouths and mini ice-ages well back before we kept any kind of scientific records, so mankind doesn’t neet to be a part of the equation. I just so happens that the scientific evidence that all of the elite Leftist Policalized scientists ignore is that is it actually the giant fiery ball of hydrogen plasma out there and it’s cycles that influence our global average temperature more than any other factor. I know… shocking, right?

That said; we are indeed stewards of our planet and should therefore not be wasteful or careless in our dealings with the environment. HOWEVER, we must also NEVER allow pseudo-science, politics and the use half-truths and lies to drive up energy prices in an effort to slow down the gradual increase in CO2. A minor contributor to the Greenhouse Effect in the first place. This is a game of government control. The government controls our water and they want our air. Oh, yes they do.

“How about teaching critical thinking in the context of Science. Separating social policy & politics OUT of Science.”

What do you have against teaching good stewardship of the planet? Why is that apparently “social justice” to you and Jaycen? Stewardship has nothing to do with social justice in my mind … it’s simply smart living. Does a farmer not have his soil tested and apply nutrients it may be low in in order to ensure bountiful harvests? Does a paper mill not replant trees to ensure it will have those to harvest in the future? Does it seem like good common sense to you to spew chemicals into the atmosphere in quantities that cause smog and respiratory problems for people?

Common sense would dictate that we utilize resources, but in a sensible manner to ensure longevity of those natural resources. Perhaps I am reading into what you and Jaycen wrote, but it SOUNDS like you are making the claim that not wanting to harm people and resources is social justice. If that is the case, then I am for social justice. However, the social justice I have come to know and hate is the crap where we must all be equal in what we acquire. That is quite a leap from wanting to ensure the “health” of our earth and resources.

I mostly agree with you. We should be good stewards of our environment and take good care of the planet that is a wonderful lesson to teach. We should also teach good habits to conserve and protect our resources. I agree with all of that. However I object to using it to beat people over the head and also to go overboard teaching our kids the guilt of man who destroys the Earth. I think that’s nonsense and arrogant.

The other side of the “green movement” is about dollars. I don’t think bankrupting our nation based on lies and deceptive information is a good idea.

Remember when we HAD to stop using paper bags in stores and several places banned paper bags? How did that affect companies producing bags? After we replaced them with recycled plastic bags, now we have to go back to paper…..False information? Or did we just learn better? Follow the dollar. And that’s just one of many examples. What really sucks are progressives using “Green” to push the communist or socialist movements “forward”.

Personally I’m tired of all the lies and arrogance from those who perpetrate them.

I never stated any of the above … yet for some reason because I’m for good stewarship of the land people read that into my statement. That seems to happen often here … the far right fringe read into people’s statements. Perhaps that is because they have reading comprehension problems, or they have been taught that anyone talking stewardship must be ‘the enemy’.

“The other side of the “green movement” is about dollars. I don’t think bankrupting our nation based on lies and deceptive information is a good idea.”

And we agree on this … screw the dollar argument – conserve the land, the water, the air and the earth. Pretty logical. I am not against solar and wind energy … it does work, just not in the fashion the lunatic left wants to shove down everyone’s throat. I believe we should be tossing some money toward honest research in solar and wind (and other) ‘green’ energies instead of friendly politcally connected companies. If we can get solar panels to a 50+% efficiency, the cost can come way down and make them affordable for many more, which will help. Likewise with wind energy, geothermal, and others. It makes sense to use a resource that beats down on our earth every day does it not?

day and night will never cease.”

Climate change does not conflict with that verse. But just as in the days of Noah, which I am sure none of those people agreed that the earth was going to be radically effected by their behavior. Then, we have Sodom and Gomorah, if repeated during this time, what would the scientific community say is the rational explanation. Furthermore, we have the prophetic increases of destructive “natural disasters” and “beginnings of birthpangs”…Also, Isaiah speaks of violent shaking due to iniquity. The earth cried out because of the blood of Able. The earth was cursed because of sin to bring forth thorns, when it was originally purposed to be a garden……

As stewards, how can we deny that our behavior is not destroying? It is like a 2-pack a day smoker living in denial, which eventually catches up to them. Biblcal people should be first to be careful and aware of the damage selfish indulgences cause to the health of the planet, food cycle, and therefore, humans, right?

In the 60s chemicals were going to “break” the food chain and we were all going to starve. In the 70s pollution was going to cause global cooling and a new ice age. In the 90s that same pollution was going to cause global warming and rising oceans… remember the “hockey stick” analogy? Global temperatures, according to their theory was going to skyrocket and the oceans were to rise substantially by 2010 causing 50 million global warming refugees!! Well, the temperatures DIDN’T RISE… so now we are supposed to believe it’s “global climate change” and every time there is a (cold spell, warm spell, hurricane, tornado, snow storm, heat wave, falling temperatures, rising temperatures) it is caused by us… even though the climate has ALWAYS changed…

There is a lot of evidence supporting Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Darwin came from an extremely religious background, his wife was very religious, and Darwin really grappled if there was a God or not: He never officially denied that there was a God. I see his evidence that there probably is a divine hand that is guiding evolution. I believe that humans and primates share a common ancestor. But many of you religious fanatics don’t believe in evolution, you cling to The Bible, ignore the evidence, and remain close-minded. V15, please post references as to these 30somethousand scientists who claim man-made global warming is a hoax. I’ve read plenty from both sides on this and from what I can gather, the jury is still out. What seems arrogant is to state beyond all doubt that one knows what is causing climate change when it’s one of the most complex items there is to understand.

I stand on neither side as I don’t know what causes it. History proves that it has happened many times in the past, thus we know it’s not entirely man-made. However, there is a distinct possibility that man is increasing the speed and intensity that is it happening. Just a possibility, but one that any thinking and intelligent individual must consider. Even if there is only a 1% change of man causing damage to the climate, that would be one helluva “Oops!” to leave our great-grandchildren.

All the above said, I am NOT for this stupid carbon tax crap that is nothing but a scheme to grab money. That does not fix the problem one iota as I don’t care how much money you acquire, leaving the planet for another one is not gonna be an easy task. This nonsense of a carbon tax seems to be what has skewed the argument into a “Yes it does!“ and ”No it does not” thing that both sides cannot find common ground on. Screw the carbon tax …let’s work TOGETHER (a radical concept, eh?) to find out for certain what man’s impact of specific items are on this precious earth that God told us to take care of.

Another good read is Chris Horner’s “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming”.

    I sure hope so.

The fact that Climate Change falls in last place as a concern for voting Americans shows just how vital it is for Americans to finally get educated.

Sure, turkey. Algore is gonna lead the parade with his pointy hat and cloak, all covered with stars and moons. Too bad he’s more like Mr. Hankey.

      @MAJASDAD

I’m certain that you are referring to those voting Americans that put Harry & Nancy, among others, into office?

Yes, probably very soon. It has taken over as the “religion” of the left, and is being force-fed to young, unsuspecting and uninformed children everywhere. Can’t wait for the day when criminal fraud charges are brought against at least the worst of those “cooking the books” and falsifying the evidence. Once they are found guilty (it’s already been proven) they should be made to give up everything because one cannot profit from criminal activity. Afterward, they can all move in together at the Gore Commune in Kalifornia.

Why not? Everything else on the Democrat/Marxist agenda is already being shoved down students’ throats as shown in “Marxist Valley College” at Youtube.? It‘s past due to return academic freedom to America’s students and get all the closed minded, Marxist thugs/teachers out of America’s classrooms. http://tinyurl.com/7ub3dv7

When will parents wake up and realize that schools are simply places for government to reach your children through the teaching of propaganda. History is already mistaught and parts are even left out. Students can’t fail, even when they do no work. Speaking and writing proper English can’t be asked of students.

I was a teacher. I was disgusted by how little our children knew, cared to know, or were allowed to be exposed to. After having my own son, and realizing I couldn’t allow a public school to indoctrinate him. I needed him to be able to do and understand math, real science, be able to write, and read, and most importantly think and find learning fun. Private schools are not immune to this indoctrination, either, so don’t be fooled.

Wake up people!!! Even if you don’t have children in a public school you should be worried about the future of America. Every American who cares about this country, needs to be worried about our public school system, and needs to get up in arms and speaking up against what our kids are and aren’t learning. We can no longer sit by quietly.

Generally speaking, what is (was) your opinion of your peers; I’m certain many of them have/had children, and perhaps maybe even some of the same concerns?

Our children were privately schooled and I thought it would allow for more parental input. Their opinion of parental input stopped at the threshold.

TEACHING nonsense is becoming standard within public schools. Time to stop CONSIDERING the need to abolish the NEA, and the time to take action to abolish it is NOW.

Government schools must go, close them all and start over without government control. They are just propaganda incubators and cost are out of control and we can’t afford them anymore. Closed.
