Will Occupy Wall Street Permanently Expand to Central Park This Friday?

Occupy Wall Street appears to be preparing for an Occupation expansion into New York City’s world-renowned Central Park.
This Friday– Veterans Day– the Occupiers plan to march to Central Park. The question at this point is, do they plan to stay and form a permanent, Zuccotti Park style Occupation?
There some indications the answer is “yes.”
There have been rumors for weeks that the Occupation would set up other franchises. Washington Square, Thompson Square, and Union Square parks have been reportedly under consideration, and some of those sites have already been playing host to nightly “General Assemblies.”
A permanent expansion of the Occupy Wall Street franchise would stretch police resources and exacerbate threats to public health and safety already seen in Zuccotti Park. So far, it hasn’t happened.
But as part of their preparations for the approaching cold weather, the Occupiers have been requesting donations of sleeping bags and tents from camping gear manufacturers. At least one Colorado tent-maker received an email requesting winterized outdoor gear from the Occupiers with a specific mention of the move to Central Park. The text of that donation request is below, though the sender wished to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from the Occupiers or their allies:
“Our occupation has stretched to its limits in Zucotti Park, the snow beat us down, tested our resilience, and our occupiers are quickly becoming bored with complaining about the status quo. The time has come to plan for the future. On 11/11/11, our occupation will be moving to Central Park for a festival of arts and education to usher in the creation of our future…we at the occupation would be blessed to receive [whatever] you would be willing to donate.”
The push for more tents, it seems, could be directly related to the creation of another Occupy site in Manhattan. And its not an isolated request. A couple of weeks ago, the Occupiers claimed that camping gear manufacturers REI and Patagonia were donating sleeping bags to Occupy DC.
Both companies released public denials of that claim, but an effort is clearly afoot for the Occupiers to stock up on camping gear, possibly beyond current needs.
Perhaps more important, though, is that Zuccotti Park is running out of space for them.
This means expansion would be a logical next step for the Occupiers, as Zuccotti Park already looks like an overcrowded shanty town. As the WSJ put the Occupiers’ need for a bigger venue this morning:
“Protesters in other cities have set up in spacious parks, where there’s room to grow. Not so in Manhattan. Zuccotti Park is two-thirds of an acre and is hemmed in by marble walls in some places and in others by watchful police officers who make protesters remove dwellings that cross the line between park and sidewalk.”
Close to 200 tents fill the square, which sleep a few hundred people at most. The cramped quarters have spawned a town planning commission, and a census is underway to get an exact count of overnight Occupiers.
This bureaucratic response to the overcrowding has created friction between the free-love-and-drugs Occupy crowd. When asked about the Occupy central planning committee’s actions, one protestor told the journal, ” if they begin moving up by claiming eminent domain, it would be hypocritical and ironic.”
Given the already tight quarters and haggling over real estate, Occupy’s attempted expansion to Central Park appears imminent.
One thing appears certain– if the City of New York and the NYPD allow the Occupy movement to spread at will and stay overnight in violation of ordinances against camping, all the problems created in lower Manhattan will only get much worse.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 2:36pmI don‘t understand why the citizens of New York haven’t decended on City Hall to protest the protesters. They are completely out of control and making plans to take over more public places making those places dangerous to the public.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 2:41pmYep, NYC residents you have no one to blame but yourselves. The longer you are silent and remain inactive ve to protest this occupy disease the worse it will get. You are also to blame for putting Bloomberg into office, remember that when they’re trashing the city.
If Zuccotti Park is any indication of how things will turn out this should be stopped. The trash, crime, assaults are now going to be on a large scale if it isnt stopped. This is Bloombergs fault, he owns this the moment he backtracked after being bullied to let them stay. He empowered them, they know all they have to do is act up as he wont risk an all out riot in NYC. This will not end well the longer it goes on and you all know Nat’l Guard will have to be brought in eventually to deal with them.
This socialist, marxist, communist, anarchist, progressive manuf’d grass doormat movement funded by Soros backed by Obama grows stronger by the day & will become as violent as those overseas. They are getting more embolden as we have seen in other cities, blocking traffic & people from leaving AFP event, using children as human shields. We havent seen any of this yet in NYC, or have you all over looked that!!
IMO when there is an attempt to clamp down on NYC we will see a riot… thats if Bloomberg gets a “set”. Otherwise these “things” that occupy will grow, spread like a disease in NYC destroying everything in its path; while the media enables them. http://SavingtheRepublic.com TAPGW

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 2:54pmI agree that we have the right to assemble, but when it turns into an occupation that threatens the well-being of others where is the line drawn. I also do not understand the attitude of complacency of New Yorkers. They should storm City Hall and the Mayor’s office with demands that this cease. There will be a major problem if this thing expands to Central Park. What about the rights of businesses to conduct business? What about the right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness guaranteed under the Constitution? These freeloaders are making life miserable and dangerous for regular citizens trying to go about their daily lives and enough is enough!

I think you are on to something. It is one thing to let the occupiers take over publicly funded land but another thing to open your door and let these noble protesters live under your roof.
The tax paying citizens of NYC are not being represented by their government and they pay some of the highest taxes in the nation.
Maybe they don’t care.

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 3:57pmThe move to Central Park was planned (at least) a month ago. I did a whois on the occupy central park website. Created on 12 Oct 2011 by (19 year old) Itamar lilienthal, 5949 Via Zurita, La Jolla, Ca. He’s a student in New York. They do not plan on getting a permit.
What are the Park rules?
“The park, according to city regulations, closes at 1 AM. The public should not be in the park past that hour,” said Dena Libner, public relations manager for the Central Park Conservancy.
The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, which enforces park regulations, stipulates on its website that “No person shall engage in camping, or erect or maintain a tent, shelter, or camp in any park without a permit.”
Zucotti Park is not a public park. It’s owned by Brookfield Properties. They received $135M from the WH through the DOE 3 days after OWS took it over on Sept 17th. They Mayor and the NYPD can’t do anything about Zucotti Park but they sure can do something about Central Park. I hope they do!

For some reason, there is another part of this mess that is starting to make more sense; what if this is just one more part of a long range plan — multiple occupy sights in New York, and then on a date already established, there will be a mass riot against the police and the city governence.

The average little crackerbox house in the ‘burbs sits on a bigger plot of land than that. How can so many people live in such close proximity for such a long time and still tolerate the sight, sound and smell of each other? Can you imagine the communicable diseases that are floating around there? And I don’t mean the sexually transmitted ones, either. Not to mention the contagious parasites like head lice, crabs, and pinworms. And now they want to move that mess to Central Park, which will attract hundreds more of them. In close proximity. If one person in the encampment gets a cold, then the whole encampment gets a cold. That’s how plagues get started. Ew.
