Will You Help Find the ‘God Particle’?

Last month we reported researchers using the large hadron accelerator at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, to find the the Higgs boson particle, commonly referred to as the God particle, would know whether it exists by the end of 2012.

Now, CERN is asking you to help them reach their goal of finding this particle. Gizmodo has the details:

CERN is tapping into the BOINC distributed computing project (which crowdsources computing power to create supercomputer for processing vast amounts of data) to release LHC@Home 2.0.

Simply put, BOINIC is a program that lets users donate idle computer time to science projects. Other projects have included Rosetta@home and ClimatePrediction.net. The first project to run on the LHC@Home 2.0 is in it’s test phase. Scientists will compare LHC@Home results to experimental data reported from the world’s largest atom smasher.

In April, we reported scientists thought they had finally found the Higgs boson particle, but were not able to replicate the results for confirmation.

Are you going to download the program and see if you can help scientists find the “God Particle”?

Isn’t the LHC a CONTROLLED experiment? Was the LHC created by chance over ions of time?

      Of course not.

      1) The supercollider took hundreds of man hours to build.
      2) It cost about 10 billion dollars to produce.
      3) It was built in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and engineers from over 100 countries, as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.
      4) It requires hundreds of computers, and
      5) some 2,000 scientists to operate.

And yet after all of this coordination, we’re expected to believe that the first event all happened by random chance?

      Talk about blind faith!

All particles are “God Particles.” He crafted the universe and applied physical qualities to even the smallest fraction of an atom. They are gifts, secret puzzles for us to unlock so that we might appreciate the genius of his creations.

They are attempting to do something which has never been done before. This project of atom smashing will be foraging along the very forefront of scientific research.. and I think they will find something they did not intend to. When the Hadron Collider hits the top speed, they are expecting that it will do something NO OTHER atom smasher has ever done before.. they will collide particles at speeds NEVER before seen. Very few people seem to understand that when you get to such “cutting edge” places in science, often bad things happen. Like the FIRST nuclear test, which ended in most of the people watching the test happen dying of nuclear fallout (they didn’t understand radiation). Fortunately, God has wonderful self-limiting mechanisms installed in His Creation so I don’t believe as some do that it will create a black hole and suck all of earth into it – just as the worries about a nuclear explosion setting the atmosphere on fire and killing all life on earth did not happen. However, certainly the dangers are underrated and dismissed.. as were those of the first nuclear experiment. Scientists today do not understand and have incomplete data about the other “universes” or “dimensions” as string theory calls them, and that can have catastrophic consequences… and THIS is the most likely place to find out about such dimensions, in reactions from collisions at speeds UNHEARD OF ever before.. think about it.

This article explains: “In April, we reported scientists thought they had finally found the Higgs boson particle, but were not able to replicate the results for confirmation.”

As scientists who believe in a Designer, we understand that all the parts must be in place for a gun to fire or a car’s engine to start (or complex life to exist). There are tons of variables involved, but once you have the right mixture and mechanism, it works. Like a car turning over but not catching, perhaps their “unrepeatable” phenomenon was like the starter turning over but not yet igniting the engine. They seem to understand there is something there, but it eludes them.. The exact mixture and mechanism has not yet been found, but many think there is SOMETHING there. They think it is the “God Particle” but what if they are playing with things they have no idea about. Will extra dimensions continue to elude them as they play with the very building blocks of matter (which definitely touch more than one dimension)?

I, of course, hope you are right, JustNeedaName.
It would be awful to be proven correct on this point.
But can you guarantee a “black hole” or something else (extra dimensional) will NOT result when this has NEVER been attempted by human beings before? Ancient man has never had an atom smasher to do this experiment before.. Again, the dangers are underrated and dismissed.. and ridiculed in your case. But I suppose SCIENCE will be forwarded by discovery, just as nuclear science has advanced after the first test proved “successful” – regardless of the risk. You cannot stop a moving train or science from moving forward.. and I see no way to make safety measures which would protect from what consequences may result from this experiment, either.

Sure, like I’m gonna help some ego-maniacal scientists who never even have recognized, there are two universes right under their noses, the Wave Universe and the Particle Universe, running along in parallel?

The whole drive for your endeavors seems to me to have morphed into an egotistical science vs. religion matrix. Your great team-effort attention to the matter of this Creation are one of the reasons this planet is possibly going to be reduced to an asteroid belt (at worst). We try to tell Him we don‘t think Earth’s scientists can harm the Universes but… in the end, He’s the expert, and you gotta admit, them H-bombs bite quite close to the core of at least the Particle Universe.

Besides, planets of peoples who have achieved advanced civilization status do it more with thought experiments in Universe #2, the Wave Universe. Scientists on this planet are just worshipers of the Particulate Universe, #3.

    @ Blazers

There appears to be a misconception here. The Higgs Boson was not named ‘the God Particle’ by Higgs, nor the scientific community. Most Physicists do not refer to it as the God Particle, because they know better. The scientific community does not expect to prove or disprove God on this one, and most of them are just as religious as the posters here. Stop ripping on them for a media distortion they had / have no part in.

The term God Particle was made famous by the publishers of a book written by a Nobel Prize winner. It’s the title of a book taken way the hell out of context, and in all reality has nothing to do with the actual science of the matter; or, just as appropriately, has precisely zero to do with God Himself. Shall we criticize the press pukes that started this whole God Particle nonsense, instead of shooting the researchers?

IMHO, whether or not we find the Higgs Boson, God is still doing His thing in His way. Shall we leave it at that?

Thank you; I‘m glad to see at least one comment from a person who knows what they’re talking about. Any person in my classes would be laughed out of the room — or, at least, thought of very strangely by the rest of us — if they insisted on referring to the Higgs Boson as the “God Particle.” Not once did the subject of religion come up in any of my classes that we studied this particle in. It’s nothing to do with God, and everything to do with modern and quantum physics, and the nature of matter. I am so weary of trying to explain this to people who just assume that because some jerk happened to call this particle a “God Particle,” that all of us in the physics community are trying to play/disprove God! Nice to see someone who understands. Thanks for the comment :)

I am definitely not a God-hating lab nerd. I’d call myself more of a God-indifferent lab nerd. Nobody in the physics community calls this the “God Particle;” we call it by its proper name, the Higgs-Boson. The name “God Particle” was coined because of a book called “The God Effect,” which is about the Higgs-Boson. It is called such because this particle has some really interesting properties that seem to defy the laws of physics as we previously knew them, and the writer wanted a sensational title. It’s got nothing to do with proving or disproving God, any more than Newton’s Laws of Motion do. It just has to do with understanding the universe we live in. Please, get it right.

Interesting euphemism, “God Particle.“ The purpose is no doubt to contribute ”evidence” for the argument against the existence of God. It is one more piece of physical stuff that they think they can use to convince everyone that there is no need for a Creator. One more attempt at putting God in his place, that is “god” in his place. If they can make him subservient to his own creation and contain him within it, then they can explain him away with the “laws of nature.“ ”The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”
