Wind Turbines Kill 70 Golden Eagles Each Year at California’s Altamont Pass

Golden Eagle and Other Birds Under Attack by Environmentalists, WindmillsContinuing to survive primarily on federal handouts and subsidies, the wind energy movement has recently come under fire.  While it is typically seen as a “clean” and “eco-friendly” alternative to fossil fuels, as the bird carcasses accumulate, the movement is starting to see closer scrutiny.  According to Robert Bryce of the Wall Street Journal:

Over the past two decades, the federal government has prosecuted hundreds of cases against oil and gas producers and electricity producers for violating some of America’s oldest wildlife-protection laws: the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Eagle Protection Act.

But the Obama administration—like the Bush administration before it—has never prosecuted the wind industry despite myriad examples of widespread, unpermitted bird kills by turbines. A violation of either law can result in a fine of up to $250,000 and imprisonment for two years…

Last June, the Los Angeles Times reported that about 70 golden eagles are being killed per year by the wind turbines at Altamont Pass, about 20 miles east of Oakland, Calif. A 2008 study funded by the Alameda County Community Development Agency estimated that about 2,400 raptors, including burrowing owls, American kestrels, and red-tailed hawks—as well as about 7,500 other birds, nearly all of which are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act—are being killed every year by the turbines at Altamont.

…Bats are getting whacked, too. The Pennsylvania Game Commission estimates that wind turbines killed more than 10,000 bats in the state in 2010.

USA Today reports that, on the other hand:

ExxonMobil pleaded guilty in federal court…to the deaths of 85 birds [not eagles] at its operations in several states, according to the Department of Justice. The birds were protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and Exxon agreed to pay $600,000 in fines and fees. In July, the PacifiCorp utility of Oregon had to pay $10.5 million in fines, restitution and improvements to their equipment after 232 eagles were killed by running into power lines in Wyoming, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

That is far fewer than the estimated 10,000 birds (nearly all protected by the migratory bird law) that are being killed every year at Altamont…

Despite the deleterious effect that the windmills are having on wildlife, the wind industry is pushing to keep both its carte blanche and generous subsidies.  According to Eric Glitzenstein, a Washington D.C.-based lawyer who wrote a petition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, “It‘s absolutely clear that there’s been a mandate from the top” not to prosecute the wind industry for violating wildlife laws.  “To me,” he said, “that’s appalling public policy.”

In 2011, wind energy was the second-largest recipient of the government’s $24 billion in energy subsidies.  According CNN Money, proponents say that, “while renewable technologies may be more expensive now, federal support provides a crucial market and…given time and economies of scale, renewable technologies will eventually be able to compete with fossil fuel.”

Just another example of the incredible hypocrisy of the left and environmentalists. They are also not admitting that stopping the logging did NOT help the spotted owl recover. According to them, it’s now the barred owls fault that the spotted owl is “under represented” and in danger. So the answer now? Shoot the barred owls. These people are clueless and we all suffer the losses and tremendous financial dislocation just to please a small minority of people that THINK they know what are doing.

Which is strange considering millions of people die from malaria because we stopped using DDT to save the eagle (also because of green fascists – so they are people killers too)

Gee. It would seem that the Government required “Environmental Impact Study” conducted prior to committing hundreds of $Billions of U.S. dollars to a dismally poor ‘energy’ alternative were inadequate or falsified.

Or, maybe government provided waivers, like it’s doing for its largest political contributors for obangos StalinCare health plan, for companies it favors. Like GE, for instance.

In any event Americans were lied to about the impact to wildlife of these devices that now liter the landscape of America. And, I’m going to wager that their energy production and MTBF were also lies.

We used to go to California and spend an average of $15,000.00 each year dredging for gold but they stopped us. Most of the time I lost money. One thing we saved was Mercury that we ended up with. Four years ago we collected and saved almost 4 ounces and sold it for $70.00 an ounce.Fish& Game stopped us by saying that stirring up the water messed up salmon egg production. Fish experts proved this wrong and said, “It helped feed the fish as they went thru the sediment. I will not eat salmon for this very reason – hope Fish & Game croak on that Mercury.

Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act
    http://www.fws.gov/midwest/eagle/protect/laws.html
But does this apply to the high holprieststs of non-oil energy?

The bald eagle will continue to be protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act even though it has been delisted under the Endangered Species Act. This law, originally passed in 1940, provides for the protection of the bald eagle and the golden eagle (as amended in 1962) by prohibiting the take, possession, sale, purchase, barter, offer to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, of any bald or golden eagle, alive or dead, including any part, nest, or egg, unless allowed by permit (16 U.S.C. 668(a); 50 CFR 22). “Take” includes pursue, shoot, shoot at, poison, wound, kill, capture, trap, collect, molest or disturb (16 U.S.C. 668c; 50 CFR 22.3). The 1972 amendments increased civil penalties for violating provisions of the Act to a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year imprisonment with $10,000 or not more than two years in prison for a second conviction. Felony convictions carry a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years of imprisonment. The fine doubles for an organization. Rewards are provided for information leading to arrest and conviction for violation of the Act.

We had thousands of the things and they only partially provided power to Manteca. The turbines themselves cause a vortex that suck gliding birds/hawks right into them. As to them being “clean” each and every one of the has a combustion engine in them to “kick start” them. Our windsmiths only qualification to work on the turbines was to know how to tune a car.

Wind energy is extremely inefficient at producing reliable energy but superbly proficient at killing birds of all types. Sadly I have a “wind farm” near my cottage …the wild bird population since the installation of this “farm” has plummeted to the point where it’s days between sightings of anything larger than a blue jay. The strike estimates are roughly in the range of 10K+ killed per year. I think that’s a little low. The damned things can only operate within a small window (15 kph winds I think) anything above that or below that and they are taken offline. Silly stupid way to spend taxpayer money. Electircal power has to be available as an uninterupted supply in order to be useful…sporadic gernertion is more of a headache than a help.

    Hmmm… let’s see what the score is…

    1. OIL & GAS: Kills caribou, polar bears, and other animals due to drilling and pipelines. Kills sea life when spilt from ships or oil rigs.

    2. Hydro-Electricity: Kills fish and other wildlife that accidentally get sucked into the turbines.

    3. Wind-Power Electricity: Kills birds and possibly other flying creatures (God forbid that a gnat die at the hands of a wind turbine!)

    4. Solar: Pretty passive, so probably doesn’t directly kill anything. However, the materials to make solar panels have to be harvested and produced, so that probably has a negative ecological impact on the planet.

    5. Algae: His Highness now proposes that, someday, we’ll use algae to create energy. Doesn’t he know that algae is a living organism?!?! Are we to wage genocide on poor, innocent little algae to satiate our never-ending thirst for energy?!?!

CONCLUSION: The ONLY solution is for us to reverse progress and go back to living in caves! No cars! No electricity! No modern comforts! Only THEN will the planet be safe from us!

    God bless the eco-freaks!

Then we‘ll forces banks to make loans to people to buy their own caves even though they won’t be able to pay back the loans and they‘ll go into default and there’ll be a glut of foreclosed caves on the market.

And then we’d have to go back to cutting trees (yikes!!) and burning the wood for warmth and fuel for our fires to cook. Just imagine the millions left on this earth (after they get through killing most of us) all burning fires; not to mention the depletion of the forests but what about all that toxic smoke polluting our air. And to top it all off, depending on where you live, you will either have to (OMG) kill those precious widdle baby animals for food say like Bambi, the coke drinking polar bear, wales for oil so we have light, and all manner of wish and other game and wildlife….hmmmm. C) Vote to give themselves extra skins, water, food, firewood and exclusive healthcare. Their stubbed toes, pneumonia and heart conditions will always be covered.

Note: Workers will be forced to pay a hefty fine if they accidentally step on a lizard or startle an owl while they’re working.

Soon the workers won’t be able to keep up because they’re so damn tired from supporting everyone else and medical care for exhaustion is will not be authorized by government mandated healthcare panels. Then the government will start borrowing food, water, skins and firewood from other tribes and the burdens of the next generation of workers will triple. Government tyranny & excesses will increase and 50% of the people will still get free food, water, skins & firewood while they sit around in their free caves watching the other 50% work.

I wonder if the 50% who work will ever stand up, say “No More” and turn their spears, stone axes, water skins and grubbing tools against the government.

Keep going. It is the ‘box your opponent in’ method the environmentalists are using. The reasoning used to justify not using a particular form of energy is a wall of the box.

Once they have the box completed, the environmentalists will wipe out humanity (genocide) at worst. At best they will take us a pre-industrial mode of living.

Solar farms take up too much land area/ destroy too much habitat. Therefore solar is evil.

There are heavy metals in solar panels, including cadmium… probably for some electrical connections. The only way to make clean solar panels is to make solar panels with solar energy. Otherwise, the solar cells are made with coal.

Anyone with l/2 of a brain, knows you cannot put moving obstacles in the air (of any height) and not expect birds to get killed !!!! Thats the first thing we thought of when we heard of such an ignorant idea !! Its so disgusting, there must have been someone that got mighty rich off of the crazy idea because all the “sheep” followed when the idea was announced. Oh for that almighty dollar – - – - money was and still is “the root of evil” !!!!!!!

A lot of people don’t appreciate the fact that birds, especially migratory birds can get killed with stationary towers such as cell phone or microwave towers. This is especially true of birds that fly at night. Some people think that the the long flight must cause them to put the flying on auto-pilot. Somehow, they just don’t seem to be as aware as they would be before and after the migration.

I wonder if the Alaskan pipeline caused this much wildlife death? Probably not…as for the Keystone pipeline, I see just the hypocrisy of this administration with their carefully surveyed land through migratory bird routes. Their shortcomings always seem to come and bite them in the a$$!

Well the wind turbines are being paid to shut down anyway. Problem solved, except for the fact that we the rate payers are paying them to not be used. The hypocrisy comes from all ends. Protect the birds, protect the fish, protect everything but Human life, but still make you pay.

Gee, I wonder what they will have against Solar energy. I guess when they tear down all the wind turbines and erect big solar panels. The birds will land on them and get fried. But who’s going to clean all the crap off of the solar panels so they will be efficient?
Nothing will beat oil and gas energy for some time to come. Drill baby Drill.

Nothing may beat Oil yet, but we should take the subsidies paid to the oil industry and give it to research for alternative energy. After all, the Oil industry doesn’t need it and we may find something that will be cheaper and work better. It’s high past time we move from oil and coal. We, as a nation, should be pushing the boundaries of what we think is possible. After all, are we not an Exceptional nation?

The green energy don’t need them either. Let them pay their own way. But by means take the 4.6 billion away from the oil and gas. I am sure they can live without it. But don’t give it to the green guys. You notice that they holler loud about the oil and gas while driving their autos and boats. If they are going to spout off about it let them walk around and prove what they say. Let them live in caves.

A subsidy is something government gives to a company that couldn‘t otherwise make it on it’s own. It is the taking of money from a successful company and giving it to a company that is a failure.

The notion that government subsidizes oil companies is a myth that has been carefully cultivated over the years until people take it at face value. The government takes money from the oil companies in taxes and fees and then gives them back a small portion. That small portion is not a subsidy. It’s what the company would have had anyway before government confiscation.

If an animal dies due to an oil spill it’s a tragedy. If one dies because of “green energy” it’s somehow ok to all the tree-huggers. We should use their own tactics against them and start filing lawsuits in federal court to defund wind energy. Time to sink or swim green energy.

The problem is, all their solutions involve one central supply of energy. If they would encourage individual power solutions, like each home has a small wind turbine or solar set up, it would be less harmful and no more power grid failures. In fact, one could argue it on a homeland security standpoint, as right now, all public utilities are vulnerable to hacker shut down…..

My fellow Americans, “little o”….I am in the process of creating a new department: “Sucker Fish Relocation/Rehabilitation Program”…All sucker fish in every American fish tank, will be required to report to this department and will be required to complete a one week program, taxpayer funded of course, to fundamentally transform your algae-sucking tendancies and become a blow-fish. Thank you for your cooperation…(and if you don’t report to this department, we will come and turn you into “Charlie The Tuna”)…the consumers will never know the difference..heck most of them ate burger with pink-slime filler when they ate at their school lunches ..so what do they know..tastebuds dead! Go back to your huts and I’m going golfing…oh one last thing…YOU will become known as SUCKERS since this transformation has been in the works (in a desk drawer) and we have been implementing this program for some time now BECAUSE WE CAN! Nah,nah, nah, nah, nah.
