Winter Blizzard Stirs Up Flurry of Criticism Over Chris Christie’s Disney Vacation

The winter weather in New Jersey may be frightful, but in Orlando, Fla., the vacation destination for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his family, the weather is quite delightful — and the Republican governor’s critics are slamming him for it. Winter Blizzard Stirs Up Flurry of Criticism Over Chris Christies Disney Vacation

According to the Huffington Post, critics are “taking aim” at the governor for staying out the remainder of his Disney World vacation while New Jersey digs out from underneath a massive snow storm. Additionally, Christie’s second-in-command, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, is simultaneously on leave in Mexico this week.

New Jersey’s state constitution dictates that someone in the state must always be ultimately responsible for its bureaucracy.  But with the top two executives out of pocket, executive decisions have reportedly fallen on Democratic Senate President Stephen Sweeney who is serving as acting governor until Christie returns.

To his credit, Sweeney has not taken advantage of Christie’s absence to take shots at the governor, but other Democratic politicians in the state are taking issue with the governor‘s decision not to cut his vacation short and the state’s decision to recently add a lieutenant governor position.

“We clearly made a mistake if we created the office lieutenant governor and wasted money if the lieutenant governor is not going to be here when the governor is out of state,” state Sen. Raymond Lesniak said, according to The New Jersey Star-Ledger. “It’s being handled very well by Sen. Sweeney, but you have to really question the purpose of the office.”

One New Jersey columnist called Christie’s wintertime vacation a “dereliction of duty and an abrogation of responsibility” which negatively reflects on Christie’s leadership ability.

But Sweeney tells the Star-Ledger that the situation is understandable. “It’s easy to criticize. I’m not going to do that,” he says. “I am sure for the governor, this was not the ideal situation for him, me being a Democrat, him being a Republican,” he said, noting that he won‘t use any of his temporary power to do anything Christie wouldn’t have done.

In the meantime, Gov. Christie’s spokesperson downplayed the governor‘s absence during the state’s post-snow dig out:

Snow in the northeast happens often, which is why the response was handled expeditiously between the acting governor, secretary of transportation, state police and the governor’s staff with all the appropriate and necessary coordination. And like every other day, the governor was and continues to be in regular contact with his staff and cabinet officers.

The New York Post’s John Podhoretz offers some friendly advice for other elected officials who wish to avoid such criticism via Twitter:

I have no problem with either Obama or Christie going on vacation. So what? The only point that I can see that is being made is that it is hypocritical for the Democrats to attack Christie for going on vacation and never attacking Obama for doing the same. In both cases since this is the 21st century I am pretty sure that they can communicate back to both of their offices quickly and securely. They both can even have video conference calls should they want.
The only news in this story is that some boneheads are attacking someone for going on vacation and while gone there is a heavy snow storm. So What?

This from people for whom the only wrong done by Sanford of SC was that he was cheating on his wife and not the egregious violation of abandoning his post and lying to his staff about it when he left the country and spent time in Brazil, no one knew where he was and he left no one in charge in his stead.

A scheduled vacation with authorized person to handle any necessary situation is hardly something Christie needs to be hassled over, regardless a big snow blew in — they do it because they need to take him down in the eyes of the people. Won’t work, sorry.

Democrats are just embarrassed that they have to explain away all the snow when they keep crying “Global Warming.” Democrats look like fools and they know it.

This wasn’t a tsunami, not a hurricane, just plain old snow, that the union geniuses are in charge of removing. Are the unions admitting they need the governor to hold their hand because they are incompetent? Does it matter if he is coordinating on the phone from Orlando or the State House or his own snowed in home?

Obama has been silent on all the Federal Disasters while he’s off playing.

If Obama can vacation in Hawaii (on the taxpayer dime no less) what’s wrong with Christie not cutting his Florida vacation short.

I also have a question – if the weather is so bad in Jersey, how the hell would Christie get back there anyway? wasn’t everything shut down on the east coast? He was better off staying in Florida than trying to get thru that crap to get home.)

While I am not sure that it was the wisest move to have both the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor out of the state at the same time, they also are not responsible for creating the weather. Are people expecting them to drive a plow or something? The towns, cities and the state offices responsible for handling this should be able to do so without the Governor’s immediate presence. If they can’t, then New Jersey is in pitiful condition. It wasn‘t a catastrophic storm like we had in ’78 when there were people in our area without electricity or heat for over a week. It was a snow storm.

We had a storm back in the beginning of the year and parts of our town had no electricity for almost 12 hours. People were furious that the apartment complex where our Mayor lives only had the power out for a half hour. They claimed that he got “special treatment”, but we live across town and we were only out for 15 minutes. Others never lost power at all. I guess we rate higher than our Mayor.

The other thing I found baffling is that people kept complaining that our Mayor wasn’t doing anything about the power outages. Uh, he’s not a power company employee, he can’t hook up lines or clear trees. I suspect that Chris Christie isn’t a power company employee or plow driver either. I would bet that the people that actually do those jobs are doing the best they can.

Rick From Illinois pointed out that today we have video conferencing and such, so it’s not like Christie is stuck on some desert island somewhere with no way to communicate. Just because he‘s on a vacation with his family doesn’t mean that he is an ineffective governor.

Remember when BO fired General McCrystal for the couple of pokes he made at him in the Rolling Stone Magazine article? Christie isn’t thin skinned like Obama! (and no pun intended regarding Christie’s weight!…could care less)…

If Obama and the liberals has done their job of controlling heaven and earth correctly we would be having a perfect winter with light snow, sunny days and clear moonlit nights.

I would guess the governor planned this vacation some time ago. Major storms in the North East usually dont happen in December. When a governor of any state takes a vacation, they always leave second in command in charge. what is the big deal?

AND THE REPUBLICANS SHOULD BE SHOUTING JUST AS LOUD ABOUT Obama and family in Hawaii (paid for by us, of course)……BUT THEY’RE NOT.
Republicans should get on the ball!! Obama takes more vacations than any 3 presidents should take! But then again…he’s better at taking vacations than he is at anything else.

It’s freaking snow people! I don’t get it. All the media hoopla over a little snow storm. It wasn’t even that bad of a snow storm. Hardly a natural catastrophe. We are turning into a nation of wooses and whiners.

I do agree on one thing in principle. If you have a Lt. Gov. position and the Constitution dictates someone needs to be in charge, the Gov. and Lt. Gov. should schedule their vacations at different times. Nothing to do with a little snow.

      What?

I am not aware of any serious problem in NJ attributed to the snowfall in NJ, like. NYC, where their chief executive (Mayor Bloomberg) was in the city and numerous, massive problems occurred.

Had Gov. Christie decided to return because of the impending storm, he stood a chance of getting stuck on a commercial flight, and he also would have gotten slammed if he flew in a private jet.

When the Dem’s biggest complaint is that the Gov, Lt Gov are out of the state and there is no serious issue during the worst snow storm of the year, well, they really have nothing to complain about.

Let’s be fair PEOPLE. Bush took a lot of vacations as well. This is a display of poor management in NJ.

      I love this one:
“You do know that most of the expenses for the First Family are paid for by them – the taxpayers as you say, are only paying for the security and Presidential jet – but the other expenses are paid by the president. ”
Guess who pays the President’s salary……. Thats right, the taxpayers! Guess you didn’t know that.

This country is filled with idiots! Where do you get off thinking Chris Christy can’t take a vacation? So, it snowed. What’s the deal? If he had been there did you expect he would be out shoveling snow himself? You can order that over the phone dummies. Some of you people who obviously are on welfare expect the Gov. to shovel your sidewalk, come put the hanky over your nose so you can blow, then bring the food to your house etc, etc. So helpless you who wait for the Government to give you everything so you don’t have to lift a finger, then you blame Christy for vacationing? JERKS
If Christy doesn’t run for President in 2012, I will vote for Herman Cain.

They also blamed republians for hurricane Katrina. How come they never told us they could control the weather? That’s a very useful skill.

P.S. Since when is it not ok to take a vacation to somewhere warm when it’s cold at home? Isn’t that what most people do?

Just remember…Obama wasn’t visible when Nashville went under water…Obama wasn’t visible for two weeks after the oil started gushing…and now Obama isn’t visible while the east coast is under one of the deepest blankets of snow in a century. While Podheratz’ tweet was tongue in cheek there is a note of truth to the words. Snow does happen in New Jersey but not to this degree. Christie should get back as soon as a flight can be arranged and let his family finish the vacation without him.
