Winter Blizzard Stirs Up Flurry of Criticism Over Chris Christie’s Disney Vacation

The winter weather in New Jersey may be frightful, but in Orlando, Fla., the vacation destination for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his family, the weather is quite delightful — and the Republican governor’s critics are slamming him for it.
According to the Huffington Post, critics are “taking aim” at the governor for staying out the remainder of his Disney World vacation while New Jersey digs out from underneath a massive snow storm. Additionally, Christie’s second-in-command, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, is simultaneously on leave in Mexico this week.
New Jersey’s state constitution dictates that someone in the state must always be ultimately responsible for its bureaucracy. But with the top two executives out of pocket, executive decisions have reportedly fallen on Democratic Senate President Stephen Sweeney who is serving as acting governor until Christie returns.
To his credit, Sweeney has not taken advantage of Christie’s absence to take shots at the governor, but other Democratic politicians in the state are taking issue with the governor‘s decision not to cut his vacation short and the state’s decision to recently add a lieutenant governor position.
“We clearly made a mistake if we created the office lieutenant governor and wasted money if the lieutenant governor is not going to be here when the governor is out of state,” state Sen. Raymond Lesniak said, according to The New Jersey Star-Ledger. “It’s being handled very well by Sen. Sweeney, but you have to really question the purpose of the office.”
One New Jersey columnist called Christie’s wintertime vacation a “dereliction of duty and an abrogation of responsibility” which negatively reflects on Christie’s leadership ability.
But Sweeney tells the Star-Ledger that the situation is understandable. “It’s easy to criticize. I’m not going to do that,” he says. “I am sure for the governor, this was not the ideal situation for him, me being a Democrat, him being a Republican,” he said, noting that he won‘t use any of his temporary power to do anything Christie wouldn’t have done.
In the meantime, Gov. Christie’s spokesperson downplayed the governor‘s absence during the state’s post-snow dig out:
Snow in the northeast happens often, which is why the response was handled expeditiously between the acting governor, secretary of transportation, state police and the governor’s staff with all the appropriate and necessary coordination. And like every other day, the governor was and continues to be in regular contact with his staff and cabinet officers.
The New York Post’s John Podhoretz offers some friendly advice for other elected officials who wish to avoid such criticism via Twitter:

Posted on December 28, 2010 at 6:39pmI have no problem with either Obama or Christie going on vacation. So what? The only point that I can see that is being made is that it is hypocritical for the Democrats to attack Christie for going on vacation and never attacking Obama for doing the same. In both cases since this is the 21st century I am pretty sure that they can communicate back to both of their offices quickly and securely. They both can even have video conference calls should they want.
Report Post »The only news in this story is that some boneheads are attacking someone for going on vacation and while gone there is a heavy snow storm. So What?

Posted on December 28, 2010 at 6:31pmThis from people for whom the only wrong done by Sanford of SC was that he was cheating on his wife and not the egregious violation of abandoning his post and lying to his staff about it when he left the country and spent time in Brazil, no one knew where he was and he left no one in charge in his stead.
A scheduled vacation with authorized person to handle any necessary situation is hardly something Christie needs to be hassled over, regardless a big snow blew in — they do it because they need to take him down in the eyes of the people. Won’t work, sorry.

Posted on December 28, 2010 at 6:31pmDemocrats are just embarrassed that they have to explain away all the snow when they keep crying “Global Warming.” Democrats look like fools and they know it.
This wasn’t a tsunami, not a hurricane, just plain old snow, that the union geniuses are in charge of removing. Are the unions admitting they need the governor to hold their hand because they are incompetent? Does it matter if he is coordinating on the phone from Orlando or the State House or his own snowed in home?
Obama has been silent on all the Federal Disasters while he’s off playing.

Posted on December 29, 2010 at 10:10amWhile I am not sure that it was the wisest move to have both the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor out of the state at the same time, they also are not responsible for creating the weather. Are people expecting them to drive a plow or something? The towns, cities and the state offices responsible for handling this should be able to do so without the Governor’s immediate presence. If they can’t, then New Jersey is in pitiful condition. It wasn‘t a catastrophic storm like we had in ’78 when there were people in our area without electricity or heat for over a week. It was a snow storm.
We had a storm back in the beginning of the year and parts of our town had no electricity for almost 12 hours. People were furious that the apartment complex where our Mayor lives only had the power out for a half hour. They claimed that he got “special treatment”, but we live across town and we were only out for 15 minutes. Others never lost power at all. I guess we rate higher than our Mayor.
The other thing I found baffling is that people kept complaining that our Mayor wasn’t doing anything about the power outages. Uh, he’s not a power company employee, he can’t hook up lines or clear trees. I suspect that Chris Christie isn’t a power company employee or plow driver either. I would bet that the people that actually do those jobs are doing the best they can.
Rick From Illinois pointed out that today we have video conferencing and such, so it’s not like Christie is stuck on some desert island somewhere with no way to communicate. Just because he‘s on a vacation with his family doesn’t mean that he is an ineffective governor.

I am not aware of any serious problem in NJ attributed to the snowfall in NJ, like. NYC, where their chief executive (Mayor Bloomberg) was in the city and numerous, massive problems occurred.
Had Gov. Christie decided to return because of the impending storm, he stood a chance of getting stuck on a commercial flight, and he also would have gotten slammed if he flew in a private jet.
When the Dem’s biggest complaint is that the Gov, Lt Gov are out of the state and there is no serious issue during the worst snow storm of the year, well, they really have nothing to complain about.
