Wis. County Labor Council Prez Bans GOP From Labor Day Parade

It seems Wisconsin labor leaders are still fuming over the recent collective bargaining bill signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker. Not only did they try to recall six state senators, but now one county labor council president in Wausau has banned Republican lawmakers from the city’s Labor Day Parade.
That leader, Randy Radtke, is upset GOP lawmakers supported the legislation signed by Republican Governor Scott Walker on issues Walker campaigned on in the 2010 gubernatorial election, where Walker won with 52% of the electorate.
According to WAOW-TV, Radtke says Labor Day is about honoring hard-working people and, in his opinion, “Republicans don’t represent those values:”
“They only want something to do with us one day out of the year,” Radtke told the outlet. “What about the other 364? What about those? Why now..why this one day?”
WAOW sums it up:
The council president says that after Governor Walker signed the bill, stripping most union workers of their rights to collectively bargain, a bill, he says was pushed through thanks to the support of area Republicans, he decided to ban them from the parade.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, however, Labor Day is about more than unions. Instead, it’s “dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers,“ and that ”it constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
Gov.Walker signed a two-year $66 billion budget deal in June that will balance the state’s $3 billion shortfall without raising taxes. Democrats and organized labor have criticized the bill Gov. Walker signed in May which they claim eliminates nearly all collective bargaining for public unions. According to the Rockefeller Institute, state government employment has dropped 5.4 percent in Wisconsin over the past year, but local government employment has risen 2.7 percent. Both figures are the largest decrease and gain in each category in the nation.
The Marathon County Central Labor Council sponsors the Wausau Labor Day Parade, and Radtke has indicated that if there were Republicans from Central Wisconsin who supported laborers rights, they would have been invited to walk in the parade. The council is made up of about 30 local unions from the Marathon County area.
“Usually they’ve been in the parade, but it seems like they only want to stand with us one day a year, and the other 364 days they don’t really care,” Radtke told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“It should come as no surprise that organizers choose not to invite elected officials who have openly attacked worker’s rights or stood idly by while their political party fought to strip public workers of their right to collectively bargain.”
Snubbed local Republicans include U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, state Sen. Pam Galloway and state Rep. Jerry Petrowski.
Considering the civility that liberal protestors have shown to those who don’t agree with them over the last year in Wisconsin, NewsBusters Tom Blumer asks why Republicans would even want to go:
“After all, memories of death threats (ignored by the broadcast media, of course), other threats, shoving, being chased down and trapped by hecklers, and other items detailed by Brent Bozell six months ago during the ultimately successful attempt to pass Governor Scott Walker‘s budget repair and collective bargaining reform bill are surely fresh in every state GOP legislator’s mind.”
WAOW reports that reactions to the council’s announcement have been mixed:
“‘We’ve had some negative comments but mostly it has been overwhelmingly positive,’ Radtke explains.
William Gau, a Wausau resident says, ‘I can understand the emotions and why the council would be upset. But, I don’t necessarily agree that them limiting the situation is right.’”
The usually fun, family-orientated parade is set for 4:00p.m. September 5.

We had 8 years of Bush, six of which held a conservative majority in Congress and we only created 3 or so million jobs in that time. Where’s the evidence that the right creates jobs?
To contrast, Clinton in his time in office created in excess of 23 million jobs…And, please don’t start on the Clinton bashing – I’m no fan of his, but thought that the data was interesting.

You will get no Clinton bashing from me anymore. Our current “leader” makes Clinton look like Ronald Reagan!! It’s all about perspective…eight years ago, I would have told you that Clinton was an idiot…today, I’d give my left arm for Bill Clinton. Then, all we had to worry about was the Commander-in-Chief getting smokers until the Oval office desk. Today we have to worry about the Apocolypse being ushered in. I digress. Unions had their place establishing the workforce and for that, I am appreciative. Now, they are too snuggled up with the Liberal left and that makes me a bit uncomfy.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 3:04pm@THE_ZAZZY, my fear is that the wholesale dismantling of the unions (which, let’s not kid ourselves, is the objective of today’s GOP) will let us slide into situations where things are worse than they were pre-union era, and today’s US working conditions resembles China, all in an effort to remain ‘competitive’. If one could assure me that wages, conditions, etc, would stay where they are and rise accordingly – without a union presence – I’d say do away with unions…because that’s all they are (or should be) there for.
But the truth of the matter is that politicians in bed with big business (Repubs AND Dems) have more interest in breaking worker backs, and helping the rich get richer, and muffling the voice of the poor (about 50% of our population – how screwed up is that??).

Now, what exactly was happening during that time that might have had an influence? Could it have been a REPUBLICAN Congress with a little notion called “The Contract with America” that forced some compromise down the perverts throat? Could it have been a worldwide push to replace capital equipment due to Year2000 bug fears? Could a information technology revolution have had any impact?
And Clinton was responsible for all of it? He controlled the calendar and got Republicans elected, and, hell, Al Gore INVENTED the Internet, right? I guess you believe it all.

Let me quote you from a different thread…”And, please, US working conditions resembling China? That argument doesn’t hold a lot of water.” That is laughable. What US sweatshops, worker dormitories have you been in lately, where the workers are paid less than $3/day? Please cite your resource on that one. Posted on August 29, 2011 at 5:20pm@ZAZZY, if you’re going to quote me at least get the context right: I was talking of fear that US worker conditions COULD slide towards China’s – all in an effort to remain competitive. I never stated that things are like that now. You make some good arguments, but at least actually read the posts you’re trying to discredit.
Veering back towards the original poster’s point and my beef with it: We’re how many replies into this and no one has yet shown me how conservatives create jobs. Where are they? In Wisconsin alone, the epicenter of this union brouhaha, employment is down 12,800 last month alone, and unemployment up to 7.8% from 7.6% in June…This is Washington’s fault? Then explain why the national unemployment rate is drawing back (albeit very slowly).
So, yeah, keep schooling me ZAZZY and BIOHAZARD…It‘s me that just doesn’t get it.

For example: ‘he’s alone responsible for the 9.2% unemployment rate.’
Really? Alone? It‘s all the PResident’s fault is it? Did you miss the part about the enormous number of jobs we lost under Bush and the miniscule amount that were created?
‘Never in my 55 years of life has it ever been that high.’
Maybe not. I don’t know for sure, don’t care to look it up right now either – Cause this ‘fact’ even if true, has zero to say about anything.
‘We are in a depression caused by Obama.’
Again, c’mon…It would be more effective for you to wear a tin foil hat and a sign that says, ‘I believe everything I’m spoon fed by Fox News’ than spout this nonsense. You can argue that he hasn’t effectively gotten us out of the situation, or even that he’s contributed to it, but to say ‘we’re in a depression caused by obama’ is an over simplification of the worst kind.
‘this is one reason why we need guns, to keep from getting our food stole and to protect our lives.’

First of all, here is your EXACT quote:
“my fear is that the wholesale dismantling of the unions (which, let’s not kid ourselves, is the objective of today’s GOP) will let us slide into situations where things are worse than they were pre-union era, and today’s US working conditions resembles China, all in an effort to remain ‘competitive’.”
I really don’t want to split hairs with you on the little stuff, but “today’s US working conditions resembles China” means today’s working conditions, not tomorrow’s or the future. Sorry I misunderstood your interpretation of what today means.
Secondly, I apologize for speaking condescendingly to you or trying to make you feel stupid. That’s not my intent.
Thirdly, can you explain why historically democratic-controlled states such as Michigan and California (also both heavy union states) consistently rank in the top ten for unemployment, high taxes, and overspent budgets?
Report Post »johnnycarson
Posted on August 29, 2011 at 7:47pm@ZAZZY
Sorry for any grammatical clumsiness. When I read it back it made sense to me. Of course, my clarification stands: I didn‘t mean it’s the way things are now, but how they could be.
As for the whys and hows of state economies: I don’t know much about Michigan, but I do know that of the last 28 years, California has had a Republican governor for 23 of them. Of course, that hardly explains the whole picture, but it’s a good place to start. Also, California is HUGE, it is or was until recently the 5th largest economy in the world – It’s citizenry and economics are a much more complicated subject than, say, that of New Hampshire.
The common misconception is that California’s high taxes on businesses have driven them elsewhere, but only a little research turns up the inconvenient fact that California, when compared to other states, is in actuality a moderately taxed state. Cali’s neighbors on the other hand are low tax states, which might have more to do with business exodus.
In the ’70s, prior to Prop 13, California was indeed a high tax state, but after it’s passing it fell to a more average standing. Conversely, Prop 13, and it’s cutting of property taxes is often blamed for the gutting of state revenues, and sending the state into the abyss it’s now in.
In short, I don‘t think unions have caused California’s decline. At all. If you have data that proves other wise please share.

Nowhere in his post did he suggest that they have done so in any particular time frame. Indeed ,many private sector business owners are reluctant to expand in this hostile business climate. Between Obamacare, unfettered regulations and the ever present threat of more prohibitive taxes one would be a fool to expand. They are withholding decisions until the anti business Obama regime is ousted. And I can’t say that I blame them. On another note , one of your other posts alluded to another erroneous contention . The new majority in the house has never promised to create jobs. What they did promise was to do their utmost to 1- put the breaks on Obamas’ insane spending, and 2- Work to create a climate that is more conducive to job creation. A tall order to fill considering they hold a majority in 1 branch of congress. Surely you know that is hardly enough to push through legislation. The only tool they have to effect change is to obstruct. You stand corrected.

And the Democrats who run the states. Sure Republicans had the governors office those years, but the democrats have had the state legislature for the last 40-50 someodd years.

Quite obvious you see things slanted only one way. Left
While it’s true that the GOP controlled Congress what you fail to understand is the recession began under the give homes to folks who cant afford it Clinton policy. Yes no one felt it until later but to deny factual history and simply point the finger of blame to one side is at best ignorant.
Some people follow politics some follow it and see the trends. Every progressive president from Wilson to Johnson to Carter and now Barry have created an entitlement society under the guise of social justice.
Look, the Dems controlled Congress since 2006. Barry took over in 2008 and all those years trillions were spent and wasted on building bigger goverment and shrinking the private sector. All under the flag of leveling the playing field or as some socialists call it redistribution of wealth..
This entire debate can be summed up east and it’s as simple as this Side A ) Unions, Socialists, Communists, Anarchists, Humanists, environmentalists,
Side B) Tea Party, Conservatives, Founding Fathers,
Which Fu&%en side are you on?
To convolute it or use smoke and mirror deflection points is at this point ridiculous especially with the side B folks who post here. Simpletons and those who aren‘t engaged in factual history simply want more from the goverment and don’t really care where it comes from. Case and point women with 12 kids from 10 different fathers and Unions.

@COSSETTE
I see, they know how to make jobs, but just can’t cause their hands are tied by Obama. Weren’t the Bush tax cuts supposed to create jobs YEARS earlier? How’d that work out? No one is ‘withholding decisions’, they’re just taking their cash elsewhere to enjoy cheaper labor in exploitative conditions is all.
And, please, no revisionist history: I followed the election cycle last year very closely, and front and center and nearly all repubs platforms was CREATING JOBS. Don’t make stuff up. Conservatives have shown time and time again that they are more interested in helping the rich get richer and shrinking the (almost extinct already) middle class. Show me evidence to the contrary, PLEASE.
@STEVE
‘the give homes to folks who cant afford it’ was indeed started by Clinton, but you fail to mention that it continued unabated by Bush…I’m not a Clinton advocate, nor am I entirely an Obama advocate. The large majority of politicians are in the pockets of the banks and big business – It’s the banks that benefitted the most from getting everyone under the sun in homes.
And that’s the point(s) I keep making here that no one seems to get. You‘d all rather engage in name calling or pointing out how it wasn’t us but them! Who cares whose side it happened on? Let’s do something about it.

The first step we can take is seeing smokescreens for what they are. You are entitled to your opinions and issues with unions. I never said they are infallible…But they are not responsible for the destruction of our economy, they are not out committing acts of violence en masse, and they aren’t holding YOU back…But the pols want you to believe all of the above – so, that they can dismantle them in a larger effort to make big business even happier and more profitable than ever before. Is there something wrong with profits? Not at all, but when they’re being hoarded by the top 1% and you and me and Joe Shmoe can’t afford a roof over our heads, you might just wanna scratch a little deeper than you are now, and see things for what they really are.

They give no quarter..neither should we. The republicans should do all they can to destroy that parade (legally)…just to play the same game. In reality…who wishes to march with a bunch of commies anyway.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 11:29amFunny, I thought “labor” mean women…. you know, REAL LABOR, to get these babies here.
Hellllooooo! Since when does “Labor Day” only mean “unions”? I thought it was for ALL of us who WORK to rest one day and honor work. If it’s “union” day, why isn’t it called that?
It is TIME TO TAKE BACK AMERICA. unions apparently and obviously are NOT AMERICAN!

The thing they are putting together is putrid in its onesidedness and vindictiveness!

Ideological purity and uncompromising convictions were also valued by another leader that sought to destory the right of workers, Hitler.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 3:45pmGood point, Encinom.
The disciplined and forceful will always prevail! Just like last year’s Taxed Enough Already uber-patriots bravely disrupted DemonRat Town Halls to prevent truthiness from spreading.
This year we continue to follow orders, learn and adapt. Now we do not allow town halls. This purifies our image. Image trumps truth. Propaganda wins again!
