Wis. Teacher Refuses Award From Paul Ryan During MLK Ceremony: ‘Lackey for the 1%’

Wisconsin Teacher Al Levie Refuses Award From Rep. Paul Ryan During MLK Ceremony

A Wisconsin teacher refused to accept an award from Rep. Paul Ryan during a ceremony last week, saying he couldn’t do so “in good conscience” because of the Republican congressman’s politics.

Al Levie, a high school social studies teacher in Racine, Wis., was one of three recipients of a Martin Luther King Jr. humanitarian award during a celebration honoring the late civil rights leader. Ryan, who represents the district, was on hand to present congressional recognitions to each award winner, the Kenosha News reported:

After Ryan spoke, Levie criticized the congressman’s policies before being walked off the stage. Levie had earlier stated that he would like to see collective bargaining restored in Wisconsin, fair immigration reform and a fair tax system among other suggestions.

In a video of the ceremony, Ryan is seen stepping from behind the podium to hand the award to Levie, who backs away and instead turns to speak to the audience. His words aren’t audible, but according to the video’s captions he said, “I can’t in good conscience accept this award, as a humanitarian, Paul Ryan stands for everything I don’t believe in.”

“Oh come on,” one person is heard saying.

“For the kids!” someone else adds.

The video was posted by Wisconsin Jobs Now, a coalition of community groups from across the state that advocates for “the 99 percent.” Levie appeared on the video afterward to explain his protest.

“I would not accept the award from Paul Ryan because Paul Ryan is a lackey for the 1 percent,” he said. “Paul Ryan had no business at a Martin Luther King event, it’s totally hypocritical. On the one hand he votes to slash health care, while on the other hand, King dedicated his life and he died for it, for people to have adequate healthcare, to have adequate jobs.”

“King made it very clear that he was on the side of working people,” he continued. “Ryan on the other hand, he has absolutely no affinity for the working class and for him to come to an event where somebody of King’s stature was honored is wrong.”

According to the Racine Journal Times, Levie serves with Voces de la Frontera, an advocacy group for immigrant and low wage worker rights, and is part of the local NAACP. He’s also a teacher and program director for the Wisconsin Correctional Service.

What would you expect from a Socialist Studies teacher. If you don’t like being in the 99% then get a job with a goal of making money. Nine months a year three-quarter time? Sounds like a pretty good gig.

@13th Imam I frequently listen to Rush on the way to an from lunch. Usually for the purpose of straight entertainment as he rarely says anything that is accurate or insightful. However, yesterday he had a flash of honesty and integrity when he stated that large corporations in the US do not want a competitive free market. That in and of itself has a lot to do with the amount of government regulations. You always need to check who is supporting legislation and what companies have close relationships with government agencies. Always remember we have the best politicians money can buy….and who do you think has the money to buy and own them.

Obviously the screeching “99%ers” failed math; confiscating all of the 1%er’s wealth and dividing it by 100 (because they surely would want to share equally with the destroyed 1%ers) does NOT make everyone (or anyone) wealthy.

In truth, the “99%ers” are really the anti-Exodus 20:17ers – they know only envy and covetousness and greed and hatred and jealousy and love of money.

      @ ROOK

He did not act on his convictions. He acted in a very discourteous and rude manner. Just because you don’t agree with someone does not mean you behave act like a donkey. What a bad example he portrays toward our children. It is the fault of teachers that our children behave badly. It is the teachers that show our children how to behave if you do not get what you want. Don’t do your job. Don’t show up for your job. Be rude to other people. And last but not least squeeze the system to get what you want. They go as far as taking our children out of school without the permission from parents to take part in demonstrations. I know, I know not every teacher is like that. But where are you, when will you speak out. It’s too hard right?
Unfortunately, that is how the people on the left behave.

With all the things that are coming toward us in this election season, the attacks on good, decent people by mobs of screaming hordes of freeloaders that include teachers, union worker and all other kind, will increase. The Police will be told to stand down and when the time is ripe they will get orders to come down hard on the good and decent people.

When the good and decent people have enough of the insults by the left I hope that the good and decent people will not react in kind. But that will take a lot of humility and grace. Willingness to turn the other cheek. That will not be easy. But if we ask God for help He will give it to us.

Some time ago I worked for a company that had unionized the engineers in the company. It was in the state of Washington so it was optional. However every two weeks a guy from the union would come and ask me if I would join. I would politely say no and he would go away. 14 days later same drill. One day the guy got me on one of my bad days when he asked me to join. I told him “I believe that Unions represent two maybe three kinds of people; the incompetent, the lazy or a combination of both”. Being young and full of spit and vinegar and needing to turn the knife, I then asked “which one are you?” He never came back again.

I have many interactions with the unions that go back many many years. There may have been a time when the unions have helped. Early 1900s but I have never seen the Unions standup for anyone recently while a person has tried to do those things that made this country great. The Unions have fought against innovation, efficiency and hard work. Most of us go to work with the expectation that at the end of the day we will be either phyisically or mentally spent. When that happens, for one I feel good.

On the other hand unions want 2-5 times as many people on a task. It has created the poor work ethic of the worker today. Also please don’t tell me that the American worker is the most productive worker in the world because of the unions. Our productivity is because of automation. We have been forced to impliment automation because the Unions have insisted on unrealistic wages. Unions are a major force that will ruin this country!

The medical issue Mr. Teacher is a control that you need to visit in the EU. It is a monster that eats 60% of ones paycheck and then the innovation is not sought out due to lack of govt funds. So the medical care in a Socialist Society that you call equal is lacking individual freedom to choose and freedom for a medical specialist to be innovative. Mr. Social Studies teacher you do not have a clue, only what your large bully Unions tell you to do.

This teacher makes somewhere between $39,150 and $70,044, which is from the Racine Unified School District salary schedule. Such schedules are based on education and experience, a person coming out of college with no experience would get the lower end and some with a Doctorate and 20+ years of experience would make the maximum. Mr. Levie is probably somewhere in the middle of this, which means he makes somewhere around $54,000 a year. The per capita average income in the U.S. is currently $47,200 according to the CIA Factbook. That makes him middle class.

It doesn’t say he is a union member, it says he believes in collective bargaining. One can believe in collective bargaining without being a member of a union, I offer my present employment situation as an example. If you check out the life expectancy of most European countries, you will find that they live longer than we do, and some of them have higher per capita incomes than we have. Which means that they are both healthier and wealthier than we are.

Oh, and just so you know, those “big, bully unions” are only 12% of the workforce, down from a high of around 35% in the late 1960s, when overall real wages in constant dollars were higher than they are today. Please feel free to check out my links.

That means they are healthier and wealthier than we are. Many of them also have strong unions, and our American-based multinational corporations manage to deal with them while refusing to deal with American unions. The freedom that Representative Ryan wants to give you is a return to 1900, when workers had no pensions and no medical coverage. He wants you to be free to starve or freeze or die of easily prevented diseases. He wants to do away with Social Security and Medicare and replace them with personal investments in an unprotected stock market and a tax credit that wou

His being a Social Studies teacher, makes me ponder about what he teaches the TAXPAYERS children. His Anti-American socialist agenda couldn’t be leaking thru his lessons, could it?? As he is a lackey for the thug unionistas that , according to him, want unrestricted collective bargaining by politicians that will give away TAXPAYERS money to union theives, with no representation of the TAXPAYERS who pay the bill.

Excuse my ignorance, but I thought Martin Luther King, Jr. was advocating for equal treatment for the races, not healthcare.

My version of healthcare: don’t drink, don’t smoke, eat right, and get plenty of exercise. I am in my late 50‘s and I’m not on any medications to maintain life or bodily functions.

MLK is conveniently dead, so the liberals can say that he stood for whatever best suits their warped agenda.

King was a registered Republican. His niece, Dr. Alveda King, has said that his message has been hijacked by the Democrats, distored, and used as a tool to enslave an entire race.

This guy is a useful idiot.

When the revolution starts, he’ll be one of the first eaten by the progressive overlords.

-Voted YES on making the PATRIOT Act permanent. (Dec 2005)
-Voted YES on allowing electronic surveillance without a warrant. (Sep 2006)

All communists should refuse to accept MLK awards. MLK, as a Republican, was for equality of opportunity. He knew something that the communists don’t know… that most black people are quite capable of earning a very good living if they are given a chance to do so. MLK just wanted the democrats to get out of their way and let them earn a living.
In honor of MLK, Pres. Johnson worked tirelessly to put black people back onto the plantation and into prisons with his “war on poverty” program that encouraged black women to have illegitimate kids.
