Wis. University Allegedly Labels Prof‘s Movie Poster ’Unacceptable’ & Removes It

University of Wisconsin-Stout theater professor James Miller has become a firecracker in a debate over free speech after he posted a controversial poster in front of his office door on September 12. The poster was from the short-lived sci-fi television series “Firefly.” What did it say? Here’s a copy:

The poster’s quote was apparently deemed offensive by some, including UW-Stout Police Chief Lisa Walter, who took down Miller’s poster and e-mailed him on September 16. The higher education free-speech group FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) obtained copies:

Dr. Miller,

I wanted to notify you that I removed a printed/copy (pictures attached) of a poster from the outside of your office. I don’t know if you posted it or if someone else placed it on your board, but it is unacceptable to have postings such as this that refer to killing.

I knocked on your office door while there, but it appeared as though you were not in your office at the time.  Contact me if you have any questions.

Respectfully,

Chief Walter

Miller was none too pleased. His response to Walter avoided pleasantries:

Unacceptable to whom?
How dare you act in a fascistic manner and then sign your email “respectfully!” Respect liberty and respect my first amendment rights.

The back-and-forth continued, with Walter using her second e-mail to threaten Miller with disorderly conduct charges. Miller responded:

Don’t threaten me with charges that have no basis in reality–I am a committed pacifist and a devotee of non-violence, and I don’t appreciate card carrying members of the NRA who are wearing side arms and truncheons lecturing me about violence.

Later on September 16, Miller upped the ante by placing this new poster on his office door in reaction to Walter’s censorship:

He eventually went to FIRE for support after College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Interim Dean Raymond Hayes scheduled a meeting with Miller about “the concerns raised by the campus threat assessment team.”

FIRE explains that it reached out to the university:

“On September 21, FIRE wrote UWS Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen, explaining that the posters are not a credible threat, nor would any reasonable person expect them to cause a substantial disruption. In Virginia v. Black (2003), the Supreme Court defined true threats, as an exception to the First Amendment, as only ‘those statements where the speaker means to communicate a serious expression of an intent to commit an act of unlawful violence to a particular individual or group of individuals.’”

Chancellor Sorensen has not yet responded to FIRE‘s call to end their censorship of Miller’s speech, apologize to Miller, and rescind its request for a meeting about the threat assessment team’s inexplicable concerns.

More than 200 Miller supporters have already written to UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorensen, demanding that he respect free speech at UWS.

    The prof had me in his corner up to the point where he wrote, “and I don’t appreciate card carrying members of the NRA who are wearing side arms and truncheons lecturing me about violence.” I still believe he had the right to post the poster, and that the campus police were wrong to take it down. That is fascistic. However, I do not like the professor’s words in this last quoted message, as it assumed, in a degrading way, that the campus cops must be NRA members.

    This story sounds more like fascistic, liberal, campus cops who thought they had caught some conservative faculty member doing something they deemed violent and evil and contrary to the liberality of a college campus, and instead they encountered a fellow liberal pacifist.

      He doesn‘t get that many cops don’t support the NRA because they don’t need to. They already have the right to carry guns. Some of them want to keep it a monopoly. Dimwits like this prof don’t understand that the NRA is the ENEMY of fascism.

      Always an interesting phenomenon when one of these useful idiots gets burned by the very system they are helping create. His reference to the NRA is probably something he likes to espouse in his liberal coffee shop drivel, but the fact of the matter is that the NRA would be the last one to attack his 1st or 2nd amendment rights. His fellow comrades would, and, they just did :-).

      Little known true story; that my father taught me many years ago; its SOMETHING EVERY AMERICAN NEEDS TO KNOW WITHOUT QUESTION, told through Ray Whitly……………………Here’s an interesting side bar. A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion: There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin .. Allow me to restate that number. Over the last several months, Wisconsin ‘s hunters became the eighth largest army in the world. More men under arms than in Iran .. More than in France and Germany combined. These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed. That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods

      Nice story, but it seems like an urban legend. Why? Because when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, we were not yet fighting the Germans at all (they declared war on us a couple of days after the Japanese attack). It wasn’t until November or 1942 (about a year later) that our troops saw any sort of action in the European Theatre — and that was actually in North Africa.

      You need to re-read the article ~ the professor didn’t make the NRA remark, Police Chief Lisa Walter made that remark to the professor in her 2nd email to him. If you read the article as it was actually written, it may change your mind about what you posted. Just a thought.

      What was really sweet was just months before Greece’s first plunge into the financial abyss, one of Joels student went there to teach the Greece who to make things right for the incompetence legally.     The poster doesn’t bother me, but police tend to get nervous when anyone other than themselves talk about guns or say the own or have one in their vehicle. Of course they have to put their safety first, but removing the poster was too much. I realize these non-violent pacifist professors are a dime a dozen, and consistenly whine about everything, but he wasn’t inciting anything violent.Of course he’s also the kind of guy you read about who goes postal and never saw coming. I like the Fascism poster better. It reminds me of how this administration deals with people who go against them, verbally of course. Oh wait, I remember, it reminds me of the bully SEIU members who beat up a Tea Partier. Then all charges were dropped against the SEIU bully. Yup, that’s it alright.

    I remember the show and the quote. It came after the doc said he didn’t trust the captain and thought he would shoot him as soon as his back was turned. The quote illustrates how the captain doesn’t shoot anyone in the back, nor does he shoot unarmed men. He’s no coward, unlike the ones who removed the poster, who find offense in every corner.

    Free speech is dying in this country and if the waves of censorship are not held back, we will all see the birth of a new age in oppression.

      that is just the problem, the universities are all p c motivated,so as not to offend, but that has lead to people like him who think that they can do what they want and there is no recourse, and he is right, they will not fire him and they will not censor him, they { the universities } have made their beds and now they must sleep in them, free speech is just that, yes some is offensive,but it is free speech, had this been a conservative professor,they would have claimed he was offending some one or group, and censored him, but liberals, just like race baiters,they will not be censored not matter who they offend. welcome to the new united nations of America, where liberalism rules and nothing else matters, unfortunately

      My employer has the right to fire me, imo, for any reason, including when/if I choose to exercise certain of my rights at the workplace, but that is my choice and theirs.

    I just don’t understand why an “committed pacifist and a devotee of non-violence” would put up a poster like that first one. I think he did it for the reaction and the attention.

      I’ve never watched Firefly; but what I got from what appears on the poster is this: “I will not attack you from behind. I’m man enough to give you the same opportunity to defend yourself that I expect other civilized adults to grant me.” Now I could totally be off — but that didn’t come off as a threat to me at all.       Didn’t want to watch Firefly but my husband convinced me. Now one of my favorite shows (I guess hubby sometimes is right about something) but I was disappointed when it ended. They put up with no crap. If we the people of the U.S. had this same attitude we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in.
      We thought we were one of the few who loved it. We were wrong. Good to know!

    What is it about that poster that fascinates a “committed pacifist and devotee of non-violence”. Why are these wack job pacifists always so violent and angry? Give me a buddy with a calm disposition and a big gun any day. This guy has no respect for authority, and sounds like he could go postal any day now.     Without any context as to the purpose of the first poster with the threatening message, how can this dialogue be sorted out? The tone of the initial poster was pretty threatening, and without knowing if this is a movie, a play, or just a snapshot of a discussion, how can this be sorted out. At this point, I am siding with the police chief, but with more context, it might be a different story.

      The “tone” was pretty threatening? That’s nonsense. The tone of teh poster had nothing to do with a threat. It was all about fair fighting. It was saying “I will only use violence against active and present threats.”

      The mere mention of killing in a hypothetical sends some panties into a wad. Geesh.

      Context? The context is a poster of Mal in pilot episode for Firefly. It is the one quote that defines his entire character for the whole series. It’s like having a picture of Darth Vader up with the quote “I am your father!”

    Just another hall monitor Nazi. It’s amazing how much people little people in mundane positions think they have. It’s a poster with a quote defining a character. To think it would incite anyone to violence is stupid. This person at the university overstepped their bounds. Shame on the University for not making amends immediately.

      Irony abounds. He doesn’t get that Lisa Walter is but an expression of militant pacifism inherent in PC establishments. I can guarnatee that she is no “card carrying member of the NRA”. Lots of gun carrying officers aren’t. Why would they be. They already have the right to bear arms through their job. Why would they want others to have them?

    “There Will Be Blood”.. There is no fixing the government. The only question is how far up your a** are you willing to let them go. All your life people have told you that violence is not the answer. Care to take a look at history? Care to look at your own government? Care to look at your police? Violence is absolutely, and unequivocally, the ONLY answer. Delude yourself if you want to. Write a letter if you want to. Call your congress critter but “there will be blood”

      Violence is an answer to several questions. How would you characterize his behavior? Violent. It is also the answer to fascism, communism, terrorism and murderers. It is not a solution to win a debate in a free society. Rights are infringed upon in America but they are not disregarded as a whole. The only force maintaining our rights are the voices of the citizens. Speak up, vote every time and don’t sit down. But now is no where near the time for violence. If it starts it will be destructive for everyone involved and your odds of success are less than 10%. Violence has a tendency of excusing abuse to rights and consolidating power.

      Yeah… how big is the tea party again? Popularity is not necissarily something people are willing to die for. As a soldier and a gun owner I’m not afraid of violence; but I’m not naive about it either. Freedom’s were abridged in every conflict this country ever fought aside from the Revolutionary War.

      A freedom/rights movement should be fought in the hearts and minds of the citizenry. Win arguement and the government through debate and elections. Once the people believe in freedom the government can use controlled violence on the 10% die hard communists and socialists as they break the law and commit treason.

      That is because Joss Whedon is AWESOME!!! I have not watched Firefly, as I didn’t want to be disappointed when the show ended, as I was with Buffy & Angel.

      Plus, he ruined the Ravers. They were supposed to be insane in the series, not berzerk. There is a difference. Insane people are still intelligent. They can use their braisn. They just use them in a bent fashion. Berzerk people aren’t really using their brains at all. There is no way the Ravers in the movie could organize themselves into anything, let alone be a threat to the Federation forces.
