Wisc Governor Signs Balanced Budget On Time Without Raising Taxes

(Blaze/AP) Republican Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed his first budget Sunday, a two-year $66 billion deal that will balance the state’s $3 billion shortfall without raising taxes. Balancing the budget without raising taxes fulfills a campaign pledge, and Gov. Walker was able to accomplish this prior to the new fiscal year starting July 1. The budget passed without the support of a single Democrat in the Legislature.

“He released just 50 vetoes early Sunday morning, signaling the Republican-controlled Legislature had given him almost everything he wanted when lawmakers revised the document. Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle issued 81 vetoes with the 2009-11 budget, his last before leaving office.

‘As a state, we can choose to take the easy road and push off the tough decisions and pass the buck to future generations, or we can step up to the plate and make the tough decisions today,’ Walker said in prepared remarks. ‘Our budget chooses to fix our problems now, so that our children and our grandchildren don’t face the same challenges we face today.’”

To find the state out of the fiscal quagmire which he inherited, Gov. Walker had to make major cuts including shaving $1.85 billion from education and $500 million in unspecified Medicaid programs. The budget expands Milwaukee’s school voucher program to suburban schools in Milwaukee County and the city of Racine.

Gov. Walker signed the budget before a crowd of about 100 people in Green Bay, with a few hundred protesters gathered outside chanting “Shame!“ and ”Recall Walker!” reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Democrats have criticized the budget as an attack on middle class values since it cuts funding for public schools and tax credits for poor people.

Wisconsin is scheduled to have recall elections in August that could result in Democrats gaining a majority in the Senate and with it power to block Walker and the GOP’s agenda in the future.

    Naturally the unions can’t let this stand. Expect the Federal DOJ or the NRLB to file a lawsuit against Wisconsin. I can’t for the life of think of a reason why but I am sure that they will come up with something.

    When did middle class values become welfare dependent? A good audit would expose all the waste in education and the poor generally don’t need tax cuts since they get most of the taxes back in a refund if they make less than 20k–which means they are living tax free anyway. Let’s get real in this country, Governor Walker proved a government can working within a budget and not raise taxes. No one died, no one went hungry, and the sun will still come up tomorrow.

Take a lesson, Congress, do the same and don‘t tell the American citizens that it can’t be done.     A great lesson for Republicans and conservatives here is that you let the Dems have their little storming-off hissy fits, let the union organized protest mob show their ass, then you just do what needs to be done anyway.

    Screw them. This is what winning elections is about.

    Haven’t heard a whole lot of uproar out of them since they vented all that wind and their sails went limp after no real public support developed.

      And, may I add; pay back the raided doctors liability fund (226 million the dems stole) and pay Minnesota the 63 million we stole from them in a reciprocal tax deal with employees near the borders(Wisconsin/Minnesota) so they were only paying one income tax. Dopey Dem Doyle stole that money as well! The cleanup after a democrap administration should be included in the superfund.

      The teachers coven….er union will work their evil no matter what. Madison is going to be Madison no matter what. The rest of the state loves Scott Walker, so a recall is futile. He may win it by an even larger margin than he won his original term with.       So now will come the next part of the challenge on this now balanced budget (something those in DC should learn from – see it IS possible to balance a budget w/o raising taxes…)

      First: These mentioned recall elections by the left and the democrats, most likely backed with the force of union thugs and intimidation – expect major cheeting to be ‘discovered’ on the part of any of the lets oppostion – or so they will claim.

      Second: Lawsuits are most likely now being prepared and/or filed in state and federal courts on the matter of medicare cuts and education cuts.

      I hope the Governor and the Conservatives can hold on to their strength; all hades is about to break loose against them unlike they have seen yet.

      Tax and spend, or better phrased, rob and bribe, is no way to run an economy, and that’s ALL a modern liberal knows.

      Stalin was correct in saying that the economy would fail in Europe. He just missed the mark by about 40 years. When Capitalism is rooted in Cronyism, economic expansion is going to be extremely limited in the long term.

      This also means I don’t have to sell the property I own in Wisconsin – just yet. I still believe Wisconsin is generally a poorly-run state (all you have to do is look at property tax rates), but this is certainly going to send a signal to the bottom-feeding public sector worker that Wisconsin doesn’t have endless amount of monies to fund extravagant retirements. If you people were aware of the amount of salary and medical benefits teachers and other public sector workers in Wisconsin currently receive, your jaws would drop. I still can’t believe it myself, considering that doesn’t necessarily count what each worker decides to put away for themselves independent of what the taxpayer pays. It’s still ridiculously high in Wisconsin (the benefits), but not as bad as before. Hopefully every decade they can pare more and more fat off these benefits.

      I still don’t understand how at least half of Americans (or more) feel the public sector workers are getting the shaft considering private sector works have to be at least twice as productive as public sector works, or they’d be fired. Private sectors workers also basically get NOTHING for retirement from their employer. The lowest paid pub workers in Wisconsin currently receive over $1600/month for life – that’s just salary. Times by 30 years and almost 600k!!! That’s for menial county workers in the local courthouse, etc. It’s crazy.
