Wisc. Union-Fighting Gov. Portrayed as Egyptian Dictator

The Egypt connections, or comparisons, are growing in Wisconsin.
As Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker fights the unions over a budget proposal that would essentially eliminate state workers’ collective bargaining ability, some, including the media, are taking the opportunity to compare him to former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak. That comes as Glenn Beck pointed out yesterday how some progressives are trying use Egyptian unrest as a rallying cry in America.
One website, called Minimubarak.com, goes as far as to portray Walker as “mini-mubarak:”
Below the site’s picture, visitors can click on an Austin Powers clip that features Dr. Evil saying, “Scotty don’t.” The site’s affiliation is unclear.
Even the media is jumping on the Walker-is-Mubarak bandwagon. In Wednesday’s Washington Post, op-ed columnist Harold Meyerson made a similar comparison.
“It’s a throwback to 19th-century America, when strikes were suppressed by force of arms,” Meyerson writes. “Or, come to think of it, to Mubarak’s Egypt or communist Poland and East Germany.”
In his concluding sentence, Meyerson uses the news that Walker briefed the state’s National Guard on potential unrest to make the comparison again:
Now that Wisconsin’s governor has given the Guard its marching orders, we can discern a new pattern of global repressive solidarity emerging – from the chastened pharaoh of the Middle East to the cheesehead pharaoh of the Middle West.
The danger may be this: if Walker is like a dictator, and rising up against a dictator is good and has been recently praised in Egypt, might these portrayals legitimize rising up against Walker?

Too long their political power in the state of Wisconsin allowed them to push their weight around and no better example is the states teacher union; where in private industry can you work 190 days with the rest of the year off, get paid health care, free pension, and then cry foul. They are so over worked teaching our children to appreciate music, but can make change for a $10.00 sale without the cash register telling them how much to give, and how about these kids never learning how to write only print, what does that tell you about our education system. I for one am sick and tired of having my tax dollars going to these self serving and whining poor of an excuse group of people.

I‘m not sure what happened in the 1990’s, but everybody seemed to forget about unions. But, they whittled away and slowly built a force so destructive, that nobody really knows how it will end.
What I hate about unions and their members is that it is inherently un-American in that it forces a neutral party to have to choose between country and fellow citizen.
I also think union members need to be held accountable. Everybody wants to blame the union heads, but the members are the ones paying the dues and reaping the rewards. It’s high time we start having an adult conversation that just because you are a teacher or police officer does not mean your fellow non-government-working citizen has to make your retirement better than theirs. It should be all about the free market and not which sector one chooses as a career path.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 10:55amWe all have freedom of association. If I and my fellow workers want to meet after work to craft requests in our interest to present to the employer, that is our right as human beings.
Now at this point, all good leftists are nodding their heads and thinking “That Ghostofjefferson, he’s one groovy cat”.
Freedom of association, however, is a right that applies to *everybody*. Unions have the right to exist as associations of free people, and employers have every right to *not* associate with them. Freedom means you have the choice to do, or not do, something at your discretion.
Thus, Unions can exist, clearly, and employers have the right to choose to deal with them, or not.
To mandate employers give up their right to freedom of association is to in fact act as a dictator or totalitarian.
These statements thus lead me to conclude that the people who claim this Governor is a dictator are both incorrect AND they probably wish to dictate to others that they must necessarily give up their own freedom of association.

“Government workers should not be members of a union! They have a job, and they are already being paid. If they have a problem as a government employee, they should quit and go to the private sector.”
Well, they do have the right to freedom of association. So do their employers (us) however. They can be in a union all they want, however, they cannot demand that we must deal with them through dint of law without denying us our right to freedom of association.
The way I see it play out is:
Union: “Well sees yo, we wants totally big bonuses and salaries at least twice the private sector, yo”.
Us: “We don’t have to listen to you, go pound sand”
Union: “We’ll strike”
Us: “You’re fired, good bye”
Union: “waaah!” (trudges off to inform its membership to start putting out resumes)
See how freedom of association works when it’s respected by all parties? :)
