Sticky Situation (Part Two!): Wisc. Capitol Cleaning Crews Struggle to Remove Protest Banners, Stickers & Tape

As we reported over the weekend, the clean-up efforts at the Wisconsin State Capitol have begun following weeks of sit-in protests. New video posted to YouTube shows the tedious task Capitol maintenance workers have in carefully removing stickers and tape from the State Capitol’s delicate marble rotunda.

While workers struggle to clean up, the protesters’ signs, banners and papers taped to the walls have reportedly been cataloged and preserved by the Wisconsin Historical Society. According the Associated Press, they may end up at the Smithsonian:

The state Department of Administration says the signs will be evaluated for historical content by both the Smithsonian and the historical society.

There will also be a process for returning signs to people who want them back.

The state had said cleaning up the Capitol following the protests would cost $7.5 million, but then backed down from that number and said Friday it may only cost $350,000.

What a criminal enterprise – the overpaid govt union workers mess up the capitol, and then the overpaid union govt cleaning crews come in a work really slowly to clean up the mess. Then the overpaid govt union workers will come in and protest and mess it up again … and on and on spending the taxpayers money on make-work. http://zreport.wordpress.com/

I wonder how much it is going to cost to validate all this trash left by these (protesters)? Evaluated for historical contnt? By the Smithsonian? Signs returned to their owners if they wnt them? This could end up costing millions. What happened to cleaning up trash and putting it in a dumpster. So now it goes to the Smithsonian. I wonder if they will take some of my trash. Sometimes it is pretty interesting even to me. It would look good in the Smithsonian. Did they do that for the union rally at the Washington Mall? I bet they did but no one reported it. What a shame. They wont teach our kids who and how our country became the greatest country in the world, but they will see the trash the brave union workers left strewn all overthe state capitol of Wi. in their history books. This insanity has got to be stopped.

I hate to disagree, but the Progressive Americans I talk with have convinced me that they really don’t know or understand the difference between good and evil. I used to think they were merely confused, but the more rabid they become, the more I am convinced that their ‘confusion’ is wilful and self-inflicted. They want to wear the mantle of ‘good’ of being thought of as ‘good’, but without ever having to confront the evil qualities that drive Progressivism – i.e. jealousy, envy, and most importantly… irresponsibility.

Ditto that. I’ve looked everywhere. Either there was nothing to clean up, or it was a sty and all the volunteers died from exhaustion and the media hid the bodies. :)

Is it just me or did anyone else just want to slap the smug off of professor bow-tie’s face? (Disclaimer-to my knowledge no one has ever died from a slap across the face so this cannot be construed in any way to be a death threat against a man with as much attitude as he had mustache. It can however be construed as an insult, and I verify that insulting him WAS absolutely my intent.)

The original basis for the $7.5 million cleanup cost was that marble is very porous, and it was thought that the marble facings on the wall might have to be resurfaced. The tape that was used was supposedly “safe for walls”, but that would be regular wallboard, which is NOT porous when protected by a coat or two of paint. The glue residue from the tape is a serious mess which has soaked into the pores of the marble.

It may be that they found a way to remove the glue without sandblasting and repolishing the marble. I am hoping this is the case, otherwise it WILL be expensive to refinish the walls.

I agree with you there, or for that matter put it up for public auction as historic memorabelia and such junk; I imagine there will be someone somewhere interested in the purchase, and the state would be able to recoup some or all of the money spent on the clean up.

Each person (in general) should be responsible for his or her own actions. Since it was the Democratic Party’s MoveOn.org who were responsible for those out-of-0state people, I think MoveOn.org should be sent the cleanup bill, including overtime if it took overtime to get it done!

The sad thing is that the sit-in idiots should not have been allowed into the building in the first place. The building should have been open for business, legit business, each and every day but not for the outrageous protests. The cops/state police should have cleared out the building at closing time the first day. Those that did not leave peaceably could spend the night in jail.
I truly do feel sorry for those having the nasty job of clean-up but I do not feel sorry for the state that has to pay the bill. They should have known better. Perhaps now they know that being politically correct is so costly they can’t afford it.
