Scott Walker Defeats Tom Barrett in Wisconsin Recall Election

MADISON — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker beat back a recall challenge Tuesday, winning both the right to finish his term and a voter endorsement of his strategy to curb state spending, which included the explosive measure that eliminated union rights for most public workers.

The rising Republican star becomes the first governor in U.S. history to survive a recall attempt with his defeat of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and the union leaders who rallied for months against his agenda.

With 37 percent of precincts reporting, Walker was ahead 59 percent to Barrett’s 40 percent, according to early returns tabulated by The Associated Press.

A Barrett spokesman said the campaign was not conceding, citing ongoing voting in Milwaukee, Madison and Racine.

“We feel very confident when those come in, Tom Barrett is going to win,” Phil Walzak said.

Democrats and organized labor spent millions to oust Walker, but found themselves hopelessly outspent by Republicans from across the country who donated record-setting sums to Walker. Republicans hope the victory carries over into November and that their get-out-the-vote effort can help Mitt Romney become the first GOP nominee to carry the state since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

The recall was a rematch of the 2010 governor’s race. Throughout the campaign, Walker maintained his policies set the state on the right economic track. Defeat, he said, would keep other politicians from undertaking such bold moves in the future.

“We’re headed in the right direction,” Walker said many times. “We’re turning things around. We’re moving Wisconsin forward.”

In fact, he repeated that very phrase in his victory speech:

Barrett repeatedly accused Walker of neglecting the needs of the state in the interests of furthering his own political career by making Wisconsin “the tea party capital of the country.” He said Walker had instigated a political civil war in Wisconsin that could be quelled only by a change in leadership.

“I will end this civil war,” Barrett promised in a debate. “That is something the people of this state want.”

Walker ascended into the national spotlight last year when he surprised the state and unveiled plans to plug a $3.6 billion budget shortfall in part by taking away the union rights of most public workers and requiring them to pay more for their health insurance and pension benefits. It was one of his first moves in office.

Democrats and labor leaders saw it as a political tactic designed to gut the power of his political opposition. State Senate Democrats left Wisconsin for three weeks in a sort of filibuster, as tens of thousands of teachers, state workers and others rallied at the Capitol in protest.

But the tea-party supported fiscal conservative remained steadfast: Walker believed his plan would help him control the state budget, and his opponents could not stop Republicans who control the state Legislature from approving his plans.

Walker went on to sign into law several other measures that fueled calls for a recall, including repealing a law giving discrimination victims more ways to sue for damages, making deep cuts to public schools and higher education, and requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls.

Both sides mobilized thousands of people and millions of dollars to influence voters, whom polls showed were more divided than ever. Signs calling for Walker’s removal and those supporting the 44-year-old son of a minister dotted the state’s landscape all spring at a time normally devoid of political contests.

Turnout was strong across the state with few problems reported as some voters waited in line to cast their ballots.

“Typically we wait until 5 in the afternoon, but we were chomping at the bit to just get it over and done with because I think it has been an unjust campaign waged against the governor,” said Jeff Naunheim, a warranty analyst from St. Francis who voted for Walker first thing Tuesday.

Naunheim said the recall was a waste of money.

“I think the Wisconsin voters voted in 2010 to vote Walker in,” he said. “I don’t think he did anything illegal.”

Barrett supporter Lisa Switzer of Sun Prairie said Walker went too far.

“Even if it doesn’t turn out the way we want it to, it proves a point,” said Switzer, an occupational therapist and single mother on BadgerCare, the state’s health insurance program for the working poor. “People in Wisconsin aren’t just going to stand by and let a governor take over the state and cut social services.”

More than $66 million was spent on the race as of May 21, making it easily the most expensive in Wisconsin history. That money was spent on an all-out barrage of television ads, direct mail, automated calls and other advertising that permeated the state for months.

Walker used the recall to raise millions from conservative donors and bolster his own political fame in the face of the fight. National GOP groups, including Americans for Prosperity and the Republican Governors Association, poured money into the contest.

Unions got behind the recall drive, which started with the collection of more than 900,000 signatures over two months to force the vote. Barrett defeated the union-favored candidate in the Democratic primary in May and then tried to use that to his advantage, while also courting union support. He pledged to call a special legislative session to restore the collective bargaining rights Walker took away.

Also Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and three Republican state senators also faced recall elections, and a fourth open Senate seat was also to be filled. Democrats hoped to win at least one of the Senate seats, which would give them a majority at least through the end of the year.

The recall also focused as much on his record creating jobs as on the divisive union proposal. Walker promised in 2010 to create 250,000 jobs over four years as governor, and just how many jobs were created under Walker was a major point of contention. Walker relied on new data showing the state added about 23,000 jobs in 2011, while a different survey that Barrett favored found the state had lost about 34,000.

Walker expressed no remorse during the campaign, saying he was sticking with his convictions. “I’m not afraid to lose,” he said during a May interview with The Associated Press. “I plan to win, I’m running to win, but I’m not afraid to lose to do the right thing.”

But that doesn’t mean the public will see a changed Walker after the recall.

“I still think people elected me before in November 2010 and they’ll elect me again because they want me to fix things,” Walker said in the interview. “They want me to keep the focus and attention on fixing things. We‘re just going to make sure we’ve got a more comprehensive and inclusive process to get there.”

    The thing I just can’t justify in my mind is that only 14% (like that’s a small number) of Wisconsin workers are government workers, so you can instantly see 14% for Barrett. However, if Barrett is around 42 %, that’s 28% additional losers. What do they constitute? Imagine how pathetic your life must be when you have to vote because you “think” you’re gonna get a few more bucks in your pocket.

      The results are not looking good for Big Expensive Labor Unions – that is why the results are not out yet – they are waiting on strong Counties to come in so it looks respectable. I predict Walker wins big or the Dems stole another one.

I truly think this is a good sign and we can be rightly encouraged. Other states will more than likely do this too and hopefully be successful and end the horrors of the dangerous unions.       Praise the Lord, Thank You Jesus. I prayed this would happen to put Wisconsin back on the road to freedom for the people and all Americans. Now I have a better feeling about November.

      We’re all sick of the socialist trying to shove their agenda down our throats, spending to oblivion.
      I still cringe about Pelosi telling us we‘d know what’s in the Bill when it was passed. Bull to her!
      I can name a dozen or more I’d like to see lose their cushy seats in Congress because of their attitude that it was “all about them”………sorry Nancy, it’s about the people of this Country, not you.

      Some in Congress have fed at the trough, using our money, manipulating everything to their pockets, not to the peoples pockets, ok, just plain downright dishonest and stealing from the people they say they represent, but knowing what I know, they never helped us out, they helped themselves.
      Watch out some of you low lives who’ve done this, we will prevail. Praise the Lord, thank you Jesus.

      Democracy died in Wisconsin, Koch and the big dollar donors drowned the state in their dirty money. The workers lost, the citizens lost, the only ones who one are those with deep pockets. Of course tomorrow or the next day Walker is going to be lead from state house in cuffs once the charges from the John Doe investigation is filed.

      But even this article can’t hide the fact that the right purchased themselves a governor.

      Thank God we don’t live in a Democracy, we live in a Republic. I remember when I got my first job, they wanted me to join the union. I asked question and didn’t think I got anything for the money they wanted me to pay them each month.
      I was probably one of the few who didn’t give in to them and I remember the lady trying to convince me it was a good thing was really angry with me. Well, I had just read in Readers Digest an article that talked about how Unions burned down businesses who wouldn’t play their game. And this was in many parts of the country.the Unions were burning down things and other violence.
      I said NO, I would never be a party to those kinds of actions by anyone. I won’t belong to thuggery.
      These people who accept this type stuff should be very ashamed of themselves. It’s un-Godly.

      Have any of you looked at CNN? The headline says the Walker narrowly won the recall. So now 14% (or whatever it is) is now narrow since it is the Dems who lost. I love it.

      Walker raised 30 million to Barretts 4 million. There was 64 million spent on the recall. Obviously a lot was spent by outside groups too and not all of it was for Repubs. Now, a question for you. Are you so weak willed that if someone spends a lot of money to convince you of a philosophy that is against your beliefs you will change your view? I do not believe so. Most of the people in Wisconsin are the same. The majority of people had their mind made up before Novemebr according to polls. Obviously the money did not play that much of a role. Dems outspend Repubs most elections does that mean the Dem party buys all elections? It must go both ways. Also, if money was the deciding factor, why had unions seen their numbers drop dramatically, some by over 50%? I would like an honest response to my questions.

      I can tell you that all the unions were in on trying to get Governor Walker out. They would not leave us alone, at our front door constantly with pamphlets and petitions, even on Sundays! This was not just about collective bargaining, it is about the union losing power in Wisconsin and they DO NOT like it. We expect there to be more protests and trashing of the capital tonight and in the coming weeks. They won’t just go away, they have to go kicking and screaming like toddlers having a tantrum. I STAND WITH WALKER!

      I moved from my home of Michigan to Texas in Feb of 09. The reason I could not take the BS any more. This vote tonight made me very happy. I have hope for my home state and the country. I may be able to move back home soon. We will see in Nov and now I have hope. When I had none.

I have news for Wisconsin – as we speak there are 100′s of companies now making plans to move there. Get the Govt off Business back and they will take care of employees better that any Union and Govt could ever do.

      THERIGHTSOFBILLY, THE-MONK, Had to go to bed early last night, but this is certainly great news this morning. Flipped to BSNBC a couple of times. It really nice to hear Mr Ed The Talking Horse’s Ass Schultz really seemed upset. Watching a rerun of Rachel Madcow right now. When she was announcing all of the Republicans that won, she seemed to be having a cow. She’s regained her composure now….ahhhh, I wanted to hear some more whining.
      Now, what really does concern me, does Debbie Wassaman-Schultz’s “dry run” statement become a prediction. What is the left learning from this loss? Are they going to take it up another few notches and put ‘voter fraud’ into total bulldoze mode? This loss may make them even more dangerous than before.

      On a good note though. This whole ordeal from the very start certainly sucked a lot of money from the union coffers that they now cannot spend on the 0bama campaign. Certainly didn’t empty those coffers, but it put a good dent in them. They spent a lot more than the 4 million that is now being discussed. That is just what was in Barrett’s war chest. With all of their shenanigans I venture to say that the unions together spent another 30 to 50 million over the past year and a half.

      I watched the election returns on FOX and the whole 3 hours I watched, it was totally upbeat. Then I switched and watched (for the first time in a LONG time) MSNBC just to see what they would say. I began with Chris Matthews, then Ed Shultz and now Rachel Madcow. All you hear is whining and one lie/fabrication after another. Talk about sore losers!

      I say CONGRATULATIONS to Walker and his V.P. They care more about the state of WI then the dumbocrats by far. I hope this is a preview of November! And thank you to everyone in the U.S. that contributed to the fight against the unions.

      Wall Street Journal reports that Wisconsin membership in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees plummeted from 62,818 in March 2011 to 28,745 in February 2012. At the American Federation of Teachers, 6,000 of 17,000 Wisconsin members have walked away.

      Another item that came out in the news is that only 7% of American workers in private business are union members. The BIG union members are those in the PUBLIC UNIONS. They are the ones driving the country, states and counties into bankruptcy!

      I heard on MSNBC that Dumbama was the big winner because he won the exit polling on who would vote for him. Hahahahaha. Those same exit polls showed Walker losing!

      So, tonight we have Dumbama cowering in a corner, Moocherella filling up with more hate, and something besides a tingle running down Chris Matthews leg!!!!

      Second, you are forgetting family and friends of union workers. A wife of a union worker is going to feel the cut just as much as a union worker. The children and outside family is going to be just as compassionate. One Union worker equals 2-3 votes.

I wasn‘t as active in my politics and my history then and it seems ever since Reagan’s death, his accomplishments and presidency has grown into a legendary status, especially since Obama took office and we can contrast the two admins policies and their affect.

      1. Votes are recounted until they get the result they want;
      2. Only enough precincts are recounted until they get the desired result.

      Regardless of a Walker win, the Democrats will now come up with the “stabbed in the back” story. Ludendorff & Hindenburg came up with one in 1918. We saw how that turned out. For one they they’ll complain about outside money. Never mind that the unions an arm of the Democrat party poured in lots of outside $. But then Democrat leaders & reporters are hypocrites.

      I am so proud to have voted today in this election and to have my team win–AGAIN!! I have not looked in over an hour, but I think all of the WI. state senate seats that were up for recall kept their seats! Nana, nana, boo-boo!!!:))))))

      They we‘re also running a bunch of mentally handicapped adult’s around in van‘s and using index card’s with different name‘s as ID’s my one of my relative‘s was working the poll’s and told me about it today. She said the only thing that was missing was the black pansie’s.

      Yep, my mother witnessed people being bussed into Madison late last night and early. All adults and all looked as if they had been there for hours straight. Definitely not tour buses!
