Despite Tea Party ‘Screaming in GOP Ears,’ Boehner Signals Compromise on Budget Cuts

Just as the tea partiers were protesting in Washington DC today, demanding that the GOP not compromise on spending cuts, House Speaker John Boehner implied that he was open to such compromise.

Despite Tea Party Screaming in GOP Ears, Boehner Signals Compromise on Budget Cuts

According to the AP:

Despite fresh pressure from tea party conservatives, House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday that Republicans “can’t impose our will” on the White House and Senate Democrats on legislation to cut tens of billions of dollars in federal spending.

At a news conference, Boehner, R-Ohio, denied Democratic suggestions that he has already agreed to jettison nearly half of the $61 billion in cuts passed by the House a month ago.

But as was the case with Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., earlier in the week, he did not say the demand to reduce spending by the full $61 billion was non-negotiable. “Our goal is to cut spending, not shut down the government,” he said.

The government is running on the second of two short-term spending bills, and at the insistence of Republicans, a total of $10 billion has been cut so far.

Without action by Congress, the money will run out on April 9. Lawmakers are seeking a compromise that will extend to the Sept. 30 end of the spending year.

Senior House and Senate aides, experts in the intricacies of spending legislation, met during the day to explore a possible compromise.

Yet officials in both parties said Democrats had not yet provided Republicans with a detailed list of their proposed cuts, an indication that negotiations were not far along.

Democratic officials added that some of their proposed reductions would cut $3 billion or so from the Pentagon budget. The House-passed legislation calls for an increase in defense spending, and reserves spending cuts for domestic programs.

Boehner spoke as tea party activists demonstrated within shouting distance of the Capitol and a pair of potential GOP presidential contenders injected themselves into the first big test for the GOP majority elected last fall.

Harry Reid almost sounded sympathetic to John Boehner’s plight. “I‘m sure it’s not easy to negotiate with the tea party screaming in their ears.”

Meanwhile, at the Tea Party rally held in Washington DC today, which The Blaze reported on here, Michele Bachmann said that Harry Reid is trying to scapegoat the tea party for the government shutdown. “Harry Reid thinks you’re the problem,” she told the cheering tea party crowd. “I think those cowboy poetry festivals are the problem.” What cowboy poetry festival? You’ll have to click here to find out.

Unable to win electorally or legislatively, the Republicans are outflanked. If they hearken to General “Chesty” Puller, they will choose to merely attack in a different direction and DO THE RIGHT THING.
The debt is a serious issue so if $61 Billion can’t be cut this year, the budget CAN NEVER be balanced.
Let Democrats choose their pet projects over government employees receiving paychecks.

Republicans are expected to like adults. Dems on the other hand will pout and shout if they don’t get thier way.
GOP is expected to live by the rules the Dems feel rules are meant to be broken.
GOP are usually conservative, Dems are usually not.

I could go on and on but who really cares the Progressives from both parties know how to play the dividing game to keep everyone divided.

Time for some “so-called” fiscally conservative in name only Republicans to lose their next elections due to the fact they lied their butts off during the last election…we need to fully contain spending to less than is collected in revenue now and once you do that you can retire the debt, slowly but surely…we need to spend no more than 90% of revenue for the next few years, reduce the federal government to it’s core and institute a flat 10% tax on ALL income above poverty level with no exemptions other than whatever poverty level is at the time. Corporations pay a flat 10% tax on net revenue, but the only allowable exemption would be for salaries of employees, because the employees will pay 10% of that to the federal government. The IRS can be eliminated for the most part, because without exceptions and exemptions and everyone paying a flat 10% there will be a sufficient revenue stream for all purposes…

Boener, you boxed yourself in with your low-ball starting point, showing of your hand, weak backbone, and lack of leadership. The Democrats aren‘t going to negotiate because they don’t have to. You’ve been played… the Dems have given you only one out and that is to deflect any criticism towards the Tea Party. Grow a pair.

You nailed it. they should have asked for a 60% budget cut. Then if they compromise, they still have reduced it by a lot. But why stop at 60%? How about 80%? Just to make budget in some areas, they’d have to completely eliminate useless others, NEA, PBS, Dpet of education, etc, etc, etc. We need slash and burn cuts. Scorched Earth cuts. I want to hear liberals screaming the end of America is nigh if Repubs get their way. Not see them smirk as they announce a Boehner cave in is imminent.

Lets work on the budget cuts like any corporation. All department heads need present and justify their budgets to the finance commitee on CSPAN. With the overall objective from each department of a 25% cut in expenses for each department. If you don’t come in with a serious budget that department of government looses funding until the goal is achieved. Nah… that would require work lets just yell and scream at each other, it makes for better TV.

Boehner needs to be removed as Speaker because he no longer speaks for the American people. His election as the GOP “my turn next” Speaker was wrong on so many levels. We need someone with some spine who will do the hard work that is needed to survive in the long run, not the “go along to get along” tactics of the Weeper of the House we currently have. STEP ASIDE BOEHNER! Let one of the Young Lions step up to the challenge that is obviously too much for your delicate demeanor to handle!

We need Term Limits! Career politicians need to go the way of the dinosaur.

They have wasted weeks argueing over cuts.

Obammy says “everyone needs to have some skin in the game”.

You pick a percentage, and you cut EVERYTHING by that amount.

    Everyone suffers. Everyone notices.

There are still people in every town that care about the unfortunate.

Republican: Reaches into his own pocket and pulls out $50 to donate.
Democrat: Reaches into the Republican’s pocket and pulls out $100, keeps $20 for himself, gives the other $80 but makes sure HE gets the credit for it.

Not every good should come from government. What government “gives” it got at the point of a gun. This is NOT charity: it is extortion. And when government should provide a good, it should be done at the lowest level possible: NEVER at the federal level, where they should only be concerned with national security and defense.

I can’t wait until we decide to become an independent nation “The Lone Star State”!. We kicked Santa Anna’s butt back to Mexico. A Texas Ranger once replied to the following question, “Why have you shown up by yourself to put down this riot?” — “One Riot — One Ranger” he said!. I believe that happened in Kilgore or Gladewater Texas during the oil boom back in the 1930′s. My Aunt told that story many times, she was living there and said the Ranger arrived on the train with a big black horse and a fancy silver decorated saddle, quelled the riot and went home!! Job done! Where are the Rangers today?

Why hasn’t anyone noticed. It is illegal to run on a budget that was not approved by the congress. Look it up. These politicians are bamboozling us on everything. John Boehner will have a short term in our government and any other Republican who follows his lead. They can shut down the government. It might be the best thing to happen. Why? Well it will give the organizations who rely on the government for funds a chance to make it on their own. The Indian affairs office is planning ahead and setting up plans to operate if the government shuts down. They receive millions. If we all were on the same page we could live without government interference and free tax payers money easily. It’s called being organized, creating ideas, volunteer work, not greedy, sacrifice, thrifty, honorable, integrity and charity. Are we living a fantasy? Huge pensions, large paychecks, living outside our means! Yes? When will reality set in? I would work for free if I was a politician and was serious about our future and our children’s future.

Spineless career politicians always looking to the next election rather than what is best for the country. Last November showed a spark of hope, but once these elected officials get to Washington D.C. they forget why they are there and find all the perks available if they can just keep getting elected. Where are the REAL Americans looking out for the people rather than the party?

See I knew you knew nothing about what the Tea Party stands for.
Rule number one: Its about the SPENDING, not the TAXES
Rule number two: Its about The Constitution and the 10th amendment, not Party rule
Rule number three: Its about free enterprise and the right to keep the majority of what ANYONE works to earn, not the right for people to be lazy and live off of someone else’s hard labor.
If you still don’t get it, look at who the Tea Party is going after right now, is it one of your “precious” democrats that spend more than the government takes in? Nope, we are going after the Republicans for LYING to us. You should be happy, we are doing more of your work for you, so that you don’t have to get off of your lazy butt and do some yourself.

Wow. It took all the RINOs on the Hill less than 4 months to forget, nearly all thier buddies that ran in November lost thier jobs. If there is not substanital action in cutting spending, look for all of these incumbents to have targets on thier backs in 2012 (sorry for the “violent rhetoric”). I think we have come to the the point where there are three parties in Congress.

$61 Billion? We incur that amount of federal debt in just 16 days time at the current pace. We need to cut more than $100 Billion a MONTH just to keep our deficit where it is!

It’s time for a national referrendum to pass a balanced budget ammendment. If DC has no intention of balancing it’s budget, we need to take thier checkbook away, period. Better yet, shut it down completely, with only essential services being allowed to operate, until we are back in the black.

OK its clear that we only have one party to chose from now called the Republicrat party. We have become just like the old USSR. The first “Republican ” debate is cancelled because too many candidates with a dissenting point of view sgned up.
      Lets go Tea Party!.
We gave it our best shot. Played within the rules and got played.
We have one chance to pull this out and one chance only .
We must help get a real fiscal conservative to win the GOP primary.
IMO it doesn‘t matter that we don’t have a perfect candidate. I don’t care who it is as long as its not one of the “old guard RINOS”
Obama was a horrible candidate and he won – we can do it but we must get cranked up now.

Yes, it is a good thing there are still a few adults left in the Republican party.

Now that the Republicans have the majority in the House, they‘re finding that it’s a lot harder to actually govern than it is to simply vote in lockstep against anything the Democrats favor. There are some who still cheer for the “no” votes on everything, but Americans want to see things accomplished.

The Tea Party representatives ARE the adults within the GOP; they are the ones who understand that this country is in a very serious economic situation, and that some REAL reform and REAL cuts are absolutely necessary, not rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, which is what any compromise would be. Boehner is an inside-the-Beltway type who will probably compromise, which is why this will be his last term in office. Bring on the Tea Party freshmen. Never Give Up!!!
