Withdrawal Deadline Passes, MO Rep. Todd Akin Still in the Race

(TheBlaze/AP) — Rep. Todd Akin defied the nation’s top Republicans Tuesday to forge ahead with his besieged Senate campaign, declaring that GOP leaders were overreacting by abandoning him because of comments that women’s bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of “legitimate rape.”
Akin would now need to get a court order to pull out of the race as he waited beyond the 5 p.m. deadline, according to Missouri state law. The six-term congressman would also be required to shell out the cash for any necessary reprinting of ballots. If Akin were to leave, state law gives the Republican state committee two weeks to name a replacement.
Akin can withdraw from the race as late as Sept. 25 with a court order.
However, Akin has pledged to carry on with his quest to unseat Democrat Claire McCaskill. But his bid faces tall obstacles: a lack of money, a lack of party support and no assurance that his apologies would be enough to heal a self-inflicted political wound.
“I misspoke one word in one sentence on one day, and all of a sudden, overnight, everybody decides, `Well, Akin can’t possibly win,’” he said on a national radio show hosted by former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. “Well, I don’t agree with that.”
Akin predicted he would bounce back from the political crisis threatening his campaign and capture a seat that is pivotal to Republican hopes of regaining control of the Senate.
“I’m in this race for the long haul, and we’re going to win it,” he told radio host Dana Loesch in St. Louis.
If he stays on the ballot, Akin will have to rebuild without any money from the national party and with new misgivings among rank-and-file Republican voters who just two weeks ago propelled him to a comfortable victory in a hotly contested three-way primary.
At several points during the interview with Huckabee, Akin focused on the idea he had misplaced a single word during a Sunday interview with St. Louis television station KTVI. But Akin has been roundly criticized both for using the phrase “legitimate rape” and saying a woman’s body has the ability to prevent conception after such an attack.
Hours earlier, Akin posted an online video in which he apologized again for his remarks. Campaign spokesman Ryan Hite said the apology was intended to cover both the reference to “legitimate rape” and Akin’s assertion that rape victims have a natural defense against pregnancy.
In a potential sign of his strategy, Akin appealed Tuesday to Christian evangelicals, anti-abortion activists and anti-establishment Republicans. He said he remains the best messenger to highlight respect for life and liberty that he contends are crumbling under the big-government policies of President Barack Obama.
As a key deadline to withdraw from the ballot loomed, Republican leaders intensified their pressure on Akin to exit.
Sen. Roy Blunt issued a joint statement Tuesday with all four of Missouri’s living former Republican senators – John Ashcroft, Kit Bond, Jim Talent and John Danforth – saying “it serves the national interest” for Akin to step aside.
Pointing to the group, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said the congressman should “accept their counsel.”
A Romney aide said the candidate had been inclined to let Akin make the decision on his own. But after the Missouri lawmakers called for Akin to go, Romney wanted to make his position clear, said the aide, who requested anonymity because the aide was not authorized to publicly discuss Romney’s thinking.
The deadline passed without any paperwork from the increasingly isolated Akin.
He provoked a political uproar when he was asked in the KTVI interview whether his general opposition to abortion extends to women who have been raped.
“It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” Akin said.
In the apology video posted Tuesday on YouTube, Akin acknowledged that rape can lead to pregnancy, adding: “The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold. I ask for your forgiveness.”
The video will be running as a 30-second ad on TV stations statewide for several days, Hite said.
Here is his apology ad, titled “Forgiveness”:

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 9:01pmI’m of two minds on this one. As a woman and a conservative I admire him standing up for his beliefs about abortion. As a woman and a conservative I think he should not venture into subjects where he apparently has very little understanding. Meaning the reproductive process. I’m not sure he quite gets how it all works.
Report Post »Non the less one side of me knows how important it is to get horrors like Claire Mckaskel out of the Senate as well as Harry Reid out of the leadership.
I feel for the people of MO because none of us wants the GOP shoving their candidates down our throats.
Why don’t they take all that money we give them and send people to states where important races like this are being run and school them in how to say “I’m not going to answer that question”.
Isn’t that what a national campaign organization is for?
Part of me would like to see him win anyway, just to irritate the Dems. They’ve got much more looney people on their side of the aisle.

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 10:20pmSo he made a stupid comment. Like noone esle in politics ever has? Sometimes women do fail to conceive, or spontaneously abort. I don’t think they have a natural system to prevent conception from rape, but not all women carry babies full-term. That’s why we do allow some abortions. Get on with it, support the guy, and get McHaskill out! Why do repubs love to shoot their own? Cannibals, all.

Report Post »Problem is, this is all the dems needed was to take this ball and run with it. Wasserman-Shultz has already come out on attack of the entire GOP including Romney/Ryan for being insensitive about women’s issues. By Akin remaining in the race the dems and liberal media will hammer this over and over again for the next 70-plus days. This is the distraction they were hoping for from Obama’s failed record and the real issues like unemployment and the economy. This gaffe is just what the left has been hoping for and they will milk it. Then there is the issue of that Senate seat possibly going to McGaskill if independents switch ther votes.

Come on people, keep focused on the BIG picture! WHY does the republican party keep shooting themselves in the foot like this? The GOP needs to have a pick for the write-in and push hard with all the million that they took from Akin give the the pick. They need to have the name and person with ads by Friday and even have a speech at the convention. This could still be okay with the right, write-in. Former Senator Kit Bond could come out of retirement is a name that is out there.

I would argue that when the Constitution was written, they did not envision abortion….They had enough headaches over the slavery issue. As the Constitution is unclear about abortion, we should all agree that the only way to ‘fix’ abortion at the federal level is for a clear and concise CONSTITUTIONAL AMMENDMENT. If a Constittuional amendment cannot be achieved, states should be allowed to outlaw abortion, per 9th and 10th amendment.

No, this is not about Ron Paul. I am probing to see where you stand – and highlight the proper way our government was supposed to work via the Constitution. Glad to know this is not outrageous theory to you.
‘My point’ with your views is that we should not rely on a ‘moral’ government to fix our problems. It isnt going to happen – the republican party itself isnt even moral. Our only chance is to point back to the Constitution and work from there. Work with the Constitution and less focus on random government laws.

“In an average population, the miscarriage rate is about 15 percent. In this case we have incredible emotional trauma. Her body is upset. Even if she conceives, the miscarriage rate will be higher than in a more normal pregnancy. If 20 percent of raped women miscarry, the figure drops to 450 (or 740).””
“”Finally, factor in what is certainly one of the most important reasons why a rape victim rarely gets pregnant, and that’s physical trauma. Every woman is aware that stress and emotional factors can alter her menstrual cycle. To get and stay pregnant a woman’s body must produce a very sophisticated mix of hormones.””

I know you to be an RP supporter. Ron Paul is not on the ballot. RP was not “robbed” nor was he “prohibited” – HE DID NOT WIN more THAN 2 PRIMARIES. While there are some states than “elect” based on caucuses – the majority of states have elections called primaries. RP did not win them. And while it may be “comforting” to think that electors can ignore the votes of the citizens in those primaries – and that they can somehow ignore the PEOPLE…doing so has no integrity. I expect the electors of my state to cast their votes at the convention according to the outcome of the state elections.
Promoting a “coup” is no different than what the dems want to do – since they proclaim the same – “ to know what is best for us because we are too stupid to decide for ourselves”.
You have two viable candidates – might suck – but this is the reality – Romney or Obama. Choose wisely – we won’t get another chance if Obama is re-elected. We have a hope if he is defeated.

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 10:01pmSlightly wrong on a subject no one can agree on? Are you serious? I know exactly how I feel, the choice a woman makes on abortion is her own, not the governments. If you believe in God, and believe abortion is murder, then let the woman who chooses abortion face her maker in the afterlife. What gives you the right to play God?

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 10:39pmSimplelies – What gives you the right to make discrimination illegal and force your version of morality onto this country, hypocrite?
I don’t see you saying that we should make murder legal. Are we playing God by having murder be illegal in this country?
