WKU Art Prof. Actually Defends ‘Vandalism’ of Pro-Life Cross Display With Condoms as ‘Learning’

There’s a battle brewing at Western Kentucky University between a pro-life group, an art professor and at least one student. Hilltopper’s For Life, a student-led anti-abortion group, is claiming that pupils desecrated and vandalized a pro-life display by putting hundreds of condoms on top of some of the crosses that comprised it.
The display, which had been approved by the university, is now the center of intense debate. A member of Hilltoppers apparently caught Elaina Smith, the offending student, as she and another individual were putting the condoms on top of many of the exhibition’s 3,700 crosses. According to sources within the pro-life group, the student claimed that her actions were part of an art project for her class. When Smith refused to stop desecrating the display, campus police were called.
Here’s where the situation gets interesting. Authorities refused to stop Smith and allegedly said that her actions were permitted by the First Amendment. Even more bizarre is the response that came from art Professor Kristina Arnold. In a statement that was released, she did anything but take a stand against Smith and her actions.
“Learning and debating are not always pretty or polite processes. Critical engagement with ideas can get messy,” she wrote. “If we are asked to introduce our students to all the tools of debate and engagement, they will use these tools. The use and discovery of tools, and the use and discovery of voice is exactly what is occurring on our campus, on both sides of this current discussion.”
Smith, too, is doubling down and defending herself. In an e-mail message that was sent to the pro-life group Students for Life earlier this week, Smith apparently defended her actions:
During the week of April 16th, the Hilltoppers for Life’s pro-life display remained un-interrupted. The student body tolerated this intrusion without major incident. The voice of the pro-life community was heard. On the last day of this event, I attempted to add to the visual dialogue with my own voice and was met with strong resistance. I take this subject very seriously, and had hoped to remind people of the effectiveness of condoms and other forms of contraception in preventing unwanted pregnancies. I do not ask that everyone agree with my point of view or the way in which I tried to express it. However, I stand by my actions. I do not believe that I impeded anyone else’s freedom of expression. I did not break any laws. I did not damage any property. I voluntarily removed the condoms even though I was not required to do so. At the time, I thought that the matter had ended there. I do not feel that I should apologize for attempting to exercise the freedoms that we all are entitled to.
In the letter, Smith is clear about the fact that she doesn’t believe an apology is warranted. Yet, Western Kentucky University President Gary Ransdell released a contradictory statement this week claiming that an apology had been issued by the student (i.e. Smith).
“No member of our University family should impede another member of our family’s freedom of speech or creative effort, especially when it comes to exercising religious freedoms,” Ransdell’s statement read. “The offending student has apologized. This matter has been dealt with properly, decisively, and brought to a conclusion.”
But according to the e-mail that allegedly came from Smith, she feels no need to apologize. Naturally, Hilltopper’s For Life is flabbergasted that the situation has unfolded as such. With the professor purportedly defending Smith and with the university seemingly attempting to put a stop to the rhetoric surrounding the situation, the group is standing up for its rights. Starnes has more:
The Hilltoppers For Life are now represented by the Alliance Defense Fund. They’ve sent a letter to the university demanding answers and an official apology.
“It appears that several WKU officials knew this vandalism would occur, did nothing to stop it, and allowed it to continue,” wrote attorney Travis Barham. “Our clients were exercising their First Amendment rights, and it is the duty of WKU officials to protect those freedoms, not passively allow them to be violated.”
The Alliance Defense Fund sent a list of eight demands to the university. In addition to a public apology, they also want to know who purchased and supplied Smith with 3,700 condoms. They also want assurances that the student will be punished for her act of vandalism.
With the school claiming that the situation has been put to rest, but will Hilltoppers still pushing for resolution, it’s likely further discussion will be taking place in the coming days.

So in the future, if you disagree with someone you can use your own “visual dialogue” and your “own voice”. In this case was a physical action (application of condoms on the display). Sounds like we can smack someone upside the head (visual dialogue the red mark on their head, own voice your hand) for having a position we don’t agree with.
I’m good with it.

Posted on April 27, 2012 at 12:44pmFact: Smith removed the condoms immediately after she took pictures for her class as proof of completing the assignment.
Fact: Smith waited until the last night of the week long display to carry out her actions. Had she wanted, she could’ve done the same thing but in the middle of the day in front of everyone, but she chose to act with discretion.
Fact: The pro life students present at the display when the so called “desecration” was taking place stated that they were fine with her actions as long as she cleaned up after herself.
Fact: Smith’s statement was not motivated by pro abortion sentiment. She was attempting to make a statement about the value of condoms and other contraceptives in preventing unwanted pregnancies that might lead to abortions.

I’m not sure how any of your facts contradict mine. The “strong resistance” she refers to is probably the fact that she had the cops called on her. After the police established that they couldn’t prevent her from acting, they stayed around to ensure that she cleaned up after herself. The pro life students called the cops, but once it was established that she was going to remove the condoms they didn’t do anything else.

Posted on April 28, 2012 at 5:50pmI do hope you take a logic course at some point in your university career. Calling the police is an action that says, I object. Ms. Smith states that there was strong objection so at least she seems to have a minimal understanding of what strong objection is. You seem to require violence or some similar action before such recognition. Did it occur to her to gain permission as Hilltoppers For Life did? I see no mention of that “fact.” Had she sought permission, HFL might have told her they objected to her desecrating the Cross once they could speak again – a request to desecrate the Cross tends to shock Christians. And she wasn’t even desecrating her own Cross! You have no understanding of what the Cross means to Christians. That’s another thing you might want to learn. At a minimum, Ms. Smith interfered w/ other student’s freed exercise of religion & freedom of speech. That is also a fact she doesn’t admit. A fact she seems to think is no big deal. I feel very sorry for you both. You’re unable to empathize, have impaired judgement & deadened sensibilities. The real fact is you‘re like children who haven’t reached the age of reason, like children whose souls & consciences have not yet been formed. You need to find a school that will help you grow up before you find yourself fired or behind bars because the facts of the real world don’t correspond to what you think is no big deal. Wake up! Which in assumed adulthood plays out in defacing a male representational object with a Freudian symbol of non-procreation. The cross only represents the male in that it is in their sight in the traditionally ancient archetypical form of the tau. At the same time I’m planning for a new career that will allow me to rest when I must but earn enough to live comfortably. As far as I’m concerned, as long as I can use my mind & have the grace of God, I can earn a living. Complaining feels good for 5 minutes but isn’t worth much, Living & working are more fun. Don‘t decide you won’t have a job. Make sure you can do much as as possible & be willing to work hard. Remember, this is the USA & you can build a life for yourself. Posted on April 27, 2012 at 12:52pmAgreed that condoms do not belong on crosses, but if we ascribe so much importance to “religious symbols,” at what point do they become idols? And isn’t this whole debate over pro-choice vs. pro-life? There was no attack on either as far as I could tell. That‘s why I’m confused about the “debate” here. If it’s about destroying religious symbols, it makes more sense, but if its something about pro-choicers spouting off again, it isn’t very clear to me.
The way it appears to be, is that a person or group of people set up a display in remembrance of all of those children that are selfishly thrown out with the trash every day, and then someone not involved with the original person or group of people added to the display. This, at the very most, is messing with someone’s property, property that very well could be considered private. Maybe I don‘t understand the condom weilding menace’s true intentions.
I am Christian, so I do not like the image of a condom on a cross, but at the same time, I am not very comfortable with the image of a cross to begin with. It’s slippery ground when one starts bowing to it and kissing it and things of that nature. Just to be quite honest, I don’t even like the fact that most pulpits are higher than the pews. It’s all a bit heady to me.

You also imply that “personal expression” is not a reason to sexually violate Ms. Smith. Your argument is she only expressed herself & doesn’t deserve such harsh treatment. You fail to say that no one deserves to be sexually violated. Perhaps that‘s why you can’t accept Ms. Smith’s actions were wrong. Have you asked yourself why she did not seek permission to engage in “self expression”? The HLF sought & gained permission. Does your school have such a requirement &, if so, does if make an exception for those engaging in “self expression”? @Spankdamonkey was being coarse & boorish but I‘m sure he’d be right there protecting Ms. Smith if anyone did try to sexually violate her. Still, his remark is terrifying & I’m glad you know it.
