Woman Arrested, Held for 10 Hours After… Painting her Nails on an Airplane?

Jeanie Daniels was minding her own business, painting her nails… at 30,000 feet. After a Southwest flight attended asked her to put the polish away, Daniels complied, but 10 minutes later realized she only had two nails left so discretely went to the restroom where she finished painting her nails.

Upon returning, Daniels found the flight attendant at her seat — presumably to confront her over the “violation” — and an argument ensued. Daniels was subsequently arrested and held for some 10 hours and charged with using profane language.

The charges have since been dismissed.

In a statement, Daniels said: “I apologized, and I put it away. About 10 minutes into the flight I discovered I only had two nails left to paint so I thought, well, if I went into the bathroom and did it, it wouldn’t offend anyone.”

If they can throw you in jail for using bad language then they can throw you in jail for anything people! Think about it!

The rules are a liiiiiiittle bit different when you’re in a metal tube at 35,000 feet. The flight crew has rules that the passengers need to follow, and sorry to say this, but order is important too. Too many passengers have ZERO situational awareness, not to mention lack of courtesy and consideration. They pose a safety issue merely by their lack of tuning in to their immediate environment and respecting the instructions given by the flight attendants. No, they’d rather focus on painting their nails….

While I was flying the passinger in front of me was doing her nails. Twice the flight attendant asked her to quit. I became sick to my stomach but decided that if I was going to vomit that I would do so on her head. She was very fortunate because I was very close.

I don’t see why the flight attendants even care. It doesn’t make people uncomfortable. People should be getting arrested for leaning back when there are people sitting behind them. I‘m 6’4″. I barely fit in a plane seat as it is and people have the nerve to lean back when I’m behind them. Screw that, arrest them for ten hours…for some bogus thing the airline can think up.

I’d much rather fly with an attractive gal and nail polish than these obesely people who fart flammable gas, hang-over into other’s seat and cost more to fly than I do with my bags. Crazy damn airlines and TSA

    Nail polish = flammable substance.
Painting nails in public = rude (esp. to many women)
Opening jar of flammable paint in aircraft cabin = questionable
Defiant vulgar language = incredibly stupid

Sure it sounds bad when listed that way, but when you consider the event as a whole…. Its not a big deal.. Should the lady have done it after being told not to, NO, but WHY was she ever told not to to begin with??

I don’t know much about nail polish, but I can’t imagine its dangerous in any way, and I don’t know ANYONE who has ever been offended by a woman putting on nail polish..

The only people I can think of that would get upset over that are the snidy kind of woman who gets upset and complains when they see a better looking woman… Thats all I can think of.. I know women only look at other women as competition (I have heard this from WAY too many women to think its just a few that do it) And everytime I hear one go off about another woman, its over something stupid, and can always be tracked back to the offender being “better looking” even if its only in their mind…..

There is a reason men will never understand women, We simply just don’t think the way they do… Its not right or wrong, its just the way it is….

@ONIKAZE Sometimes people can be clueless as to what constitutes acceptable public versus private activity. Intense grooming (hair, nails, makeup, shaving, plucking, etc.) kind of belongs in the bathroom. Dontchya think?

common nothing… So what she was a little rude in deciding to go into a bathroom to finish painting her nails…. All of you have missed the main point to this story… She was arrested an held for 10 hours for cursing…. The TSA needs to be shut down an dismanteled! If you keep backing up and let them step down on you then all of you little sheeple get what you deserve. Freedom of speech plain an simple… Gaurentee if they would have tryed to hold me for cusing at a flight attendant I really would have made it worth while as I punched out the idiot for trying to arrest me in the first place. Then would have a field day in court for the plain stupidity of the airline in the first place!

Yeah Its a “non story’ And the woman was wrong because the stuff does stink! (I wouldnt have complained though) But, the story does illustrate the increasing frequency Of “travel naziism” It appears that these days even looking crosseyed at these tin plated little dictators or questioning their perceived authority will result in an arrest! (remember, an arrest says on the record, conviction or not!) I now only fly when I have no choice because I,m tired of paying big money to be treated like a piece of garbage criminal !!

The stuff more than stinks. It usually contains carcinogens in an acetone soup. Acetone has a low vapor pressure and will readily evaporate filling the entire cabin, and in case anyone doesn’t already know, airplanes are the best ventilated contraptions, so the chemical remains floating in the air. If you are going to do your nails, then do them somewhere else.

While I disagree with putting the woman in jail for any amount of time, I would have enjoyed a story saying that she was never allowed to fly with that airline ever again.

      SGTB,

“Acetone has a low vapor pressure and will readily evaporate filling the entire cabin, and in case anyone doesn’t already know, airplanes are the best ventilated contraptions, so the chemical remains floating in the air”

You’re right. Acetone evaporates quick in an airplane (which accounts for why it can be smelled quite readily at a cabin pressure of 8,000 ft. MSL. However, aircraft cabins are leaky as sieves, and they are quite large (737). The smell of volatile acetone dissipates and is left far behind the aircraft quite quickly. This is not a big deal, though arguably what the woman did was obnoxious. Arguably it’s of no more significance than a dose of flatulence.

Were I her, I’d sue for false arrest. Of course, she shouldn‘t have disobeyed a crewmember’s instructions. That’s illegal.

Common sense and common courtesy sure seem to be in short supply these days. Way too cozy on an aircraft to pull out that noxious stuff – not to mention that it is flammable. I don’t why she was held for 10 hours, though. That seems a little odd.

The reaction doesn’t match the offense. Yet we are letting terrorists pass right through TSA leaving the flight crew and passengers left to do the job that wasn’t done. If she went into the bathroom to finish the nails, I don’t see the huge problem.

Nope, under the 2oz rule she could have it, but it was a bit inconsderate for her to do it in such a closed envierment. That said, as a woman having two nails to go would have driven me nuts too.

I don’t know the situation un the US but swearing is a public order offence (here in the UK, although you will not be arrested without a warning first.
The best thing to do is just promise to sue for false arrest. Both the flight attendant and the company. Even losing the case willcost them money to defend it, just file yourself.

Asking someone to stop b*tching at you is hardly swearing with the language we hear every day. worse words are contained in the music you listen to while on the flight than that. She didn’t call the Stew a name, she didn’t tell her to go do unnatural acts to herself or a plethora of other things she could have told her to do or called her, She didn’t call her a single name at all.

Add to that when she was exiting the plane she raised her hand to give her a “High 5” to show there were no hard feelings and the Houston Police Officer waiting at the exit accused her of trying to hit her!

To say that both SWA, its employees and the Houston Police over reacted is a gross understatement. In over 1 1/2 million miles of flying I have never seen a minor situation so badly handled by an Airline and the Police.

The stewardess NEVER told her that painting her nails wasn’t allowed, only that it was disturbing to passengers around her in spite of her having asked her seatmates as well as passengers on the other side of the aisle if it would be OK. After being told not to paint her nails in her seat she went to the restroom to complete the task, yet this stew plus another continued giving her their opinion that she was defying their authority.

@SHYGUY Have to disagree with you about the “high five”. WHO does that after the type of repeated exchanges that occurred in the cabin? That alone makes me think this passenger is rather odd. It’s possible she was defiantly showing off her nails as a gesture, and then explained it away as a conciliatory “high five”. Since we weren’t there to witness it (but the policeman who arrested her was) that’s obviously speculation on my part. But to raise one’s hand in that manner is obtuse at the very least. I think there’s more to this story than has been reported.

So she goes into a bathroom – hey, that stuff is flammable – and the fumes can be too! She knew she was wrong – but did it anyway..Hmmmm, think she should have been placed in the back with a DUNCE cap and made to write 1000 sentences before they landed and she could get off the plane. Dipwade!
