Woman Drives on Snow-Covered Median at Highway Speeds: ‘Lights Are on But Nobody’s Home’

Morning rush hour earlier this week in a Pennsylvania township was a bit scary — and confusing — for commuters as the watched a 2009 Kia drive at highway speeds on the I-81 snow-covered median.

Watch the footage shot on a cell phone (Warning: Some strong language):
The local ABC news, which picked up on the YouTube footage captured by Shawn Lucas, reports that first responders state the 61-year-old woman in the vehicle was having a diabetic emergency at the time:
“I would just say it like this — the lights are on but nobody’s home. Meaning, your eyes are open, you’re wide awake, but you don‘t realize what’s going on around you,” Fife said. “And from the video that I watched, that has to be what’s happening.”
The woman was taken to Community General Hospital, where she remained Monday night.

At around 40 seconds into the video, the car takes a jump.
According to ABC 27, the woman was being helped out of the median earlier — Lucas said others were pushing her out — but then she jetted off.
Correction: We had originally reported that the footage was filmed by Shawn York. His name is really Shawn Lucas. Lucas also informed us that police were already on the scene during this time and that there was no need to call them.

I did get a liitle chuckle when I realized that the person driving and the person making the video are going to make a bunch of money from KIA for a commercial. “Buy a KiA… you don’t need no stinking 4 wheel drive.”

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 3:01amIt really doesn’t say much about our society and this post-Mtv, reality show generation. These guys are complete idiots laughing away (like a real life Bevis and ******** duo). I don‘t know who’s more out of it…..the car in the median or the morons filming it and laughing away. No light bulb goes off in their head that something maybe wrong with the driver. Statements like “I want to see what happens when he hits the bridge up ahead” tells you these guys filming are sociopaths. They even laugh away thinking that driver was going to cross into oncoming traffic and get into a head on collision. Never mind that one or several people could have died. It was just too funny to these sociopaths filming to think of doing anything like honk their horn.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 9:11amIt’s a shame that our society has degenerated to the point where someone is having an emergency and others find it amusing. I have no idea what was going on with the driver – but if they had swerved into oncoming traffic somebody would have died. NOT FUNNY.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 10:39amI suppose it would have been really really funny if the driver had swerved left into oncoming traffic and several people had died. People these days do not seem to value human life or even care about other people. I guess drugs, leftist propaganda and lack of God is clearly showing these people.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 11:09amNo it wouldn’t have been funny if someone had died, but no one did. Not only that, but when the guys were making the video, you have no idea if they called 911 first, and they had no idea she was hypoglycemic. If I saw a car 4×4ing in the median, I’d think it was funny as well. Add what if’s to any story and it just seems to not be funny. Why did the chicken cross the road? What if while crossing, a minivan swerved to miss it? What if that minivan was full of kids and hit a tree and they all died?

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 12:26pm@ everyone mad at the person filming.
Let’s not forget who the negligent one is here. This diabetic woman shows a total lack of responsibility to her fellow man. She does not keep her diabetes in check and puts the lives of everyone on the road in danger. This woman could have killed you, or your loved ones because she didn’t feel like checking her blood sugar….so let’s not cry for her negligence. This was preventable. She‘s lucky she didn’t commit manslaughter by killing a family. What is not funny is that everyone is giving her a pass…what’s not funny is that she has so little concern for her life and the lives of others by not keeping on top of her condition. Horrible.
Report Post »Bryancpe
Posted on January 26, 2012 at 2:56pmWell it‘s funny because it’s not everyday you see someone driving at high speed in the median. However, in hindsight, the fact that she was having a diabetic low is very scary (and a little close to home). Just lucky no one got hurt.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 3:00pmYeah when I watch that video I see some STUPID young retards, which is almost redundant these days to say young and retarded in the same sentence. I didn’t see anything funny. What is obvious to me is some driver with a problem is driving in the median, and these young punks which should be taken out and horse whipped, are speed-matching the vehicle in the fast lane not allowing the median-driver to get back onto the freeway and the proper lanes of travel. They should be arrested and thrown in jail and their license to drive revoked indefinately…

I watched a guy in front of me one day start weaving, I knew he must have passed out…and he crossed three lanes, went through our median area which was lined with palm trees, etc. and the size of a couple of lanes, went diagonal across the oncoming lanes and crashed into a restaurant. Posted on January 25, 2012 at 6:41pmI am deeply disturbed by the reaction of the impromptu videographers in this incident and in the Carls Jr. shooting. I don’t understand what goes through the minds of people who are watching folks possibly going through the last moments of their lives and laugh at them. I am sick over the fact that these guys chose to use their phone to film instead of call 911, they used their car to keep pace instead of trying to warn or slow the car of the person in trouble.

Posted on January 25, 2012 at 6:38pmMy father in law is a diabetic and nearly killed my wife in a severe car accident when she was a young girl. When a diabetic has a reaction their mental facilities shut down. I witnessed him have a reaction on Thanksgiving when we were playing a game of wiffleball. It was like out of nowhere he became incapacitated and unresponsive. When someone in this condition is in control of a motor vehicle, it is deadly dangerous. People here commenting that she is using her diabetes as an excuse are dumb. I have no doubts she was out of it and everyone was in danger.

I don‘t get why it’s ok to kill people if your excuse is “I forgot to check my blood sugar, so sorry I killed your family”
This woman seems to have no concern for her fellow man. All she has to do is keep her diabetes in check, but this is too much, she would rather risk the lives of others. But apparently everyone thinks she is a victim and the kids filming her negligence are evil.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 3:11pmWhy don’t we just start up the gas chambers and put anyone who may possibly cause harm to anyone else into it? Just because someone is “controlled” doesn’t make them safe because there is always the chance of a lapse due to body chemistry, mental, or otherwise. Just execute them and solve the problem. George Patton, LucyLoo, and BSDetector have the right mindset. Way to go!

Report Post »We, not them, really have to be much more aware and sensitive to what other people may be going through.
You never really know that the person that just cut you off on the on ramp may be trying to get to their dying child or spouse or parent in a hospital. Sometimes we need to stand back and put things in perspective. This could be a teachable moment – if you let it.

Report Post »hillbillyinny
Posted on January 25, 2012 at 9:36pm@ Mikie:
There is a big difference between a type II diabetic (on oral meds, probably), and a type I Insulin DEPENDENT diabetic!!!
When you are insulin dependent and eat meals high in carbs (as suggested by the ADA), you inject higher amounts of insulin to cover the carbs. High amounts of insulin can bottom you out QUICKLY! If you go below tpo low (55 mol or below), you can develop very muddled thinking and can go in and out of consciousness or go into a “diabetic coma” from lack of sugar in your blood. It is a dangerous siutaiton for all involved! Good diabetes doctors suggest testing blood sugar every two hours when driving.
Learn about things before you open your mouth! And hope you are controlling your type II before you move on to type I. Check out information from Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, Hudson Valley area, NY for information on how to “normalize” your blood sugars.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 10:39amMike, I had the same thought. I live with a diabetic, and recognize that the disease is being scapegoated here.
A careful reading reveals that the woman had been helped out of the median already, and then took off again into it. There’s something else going on here.
Report Post »hillbillyinny
Posted on January 26, 2012 at 10:58am@ huskerdave
If you have never PERSONALLY experienced the fogginess of extremely low blood sugar, you have never known the confusion it can cause, and without someone like you who see what is going on with the diabetec and keeps them from trouble, wrong “decisions” can be made and disaster can happen.
Low blood sugar “muddies” the brain, then goes to actual confusion, and finally the diabetic can pass out. But, each person reacts differently, so not all of this will happen to each person. I had never had lows into the mid and low 50′s until I started insulin but was told to continue a oral med that made me super-sensitive for the insulin. It is weird, you KNOW something is wrong but your brain won‘t identify that it is YOU that is in trouble not what’s around you! I stayed on the insulin (more contrl), stopped the oral med, eat a low carb diet so I can use only small amounts of insulin, and have never looked back–sugars under control and dropped much weight!
Hopefully this woman is fine and thankfully she didn’t hurt anyone else!

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 12:44pm@hillbilly
You‘re right she’s the victim here because she has the right to endanger the lives of others because she has a disease. That seems fair. If she smashes into a car and kills an infant it’s not her fault, afterall she has the right to drive no matter how much of a gamble it is for everyone else on the road. So remember everyone, if a diabetic kills your loved ones too bad for you, they wanted to drive even though it risks your life.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 2:29pmI have lived with Type 1 Diabetes since I was 6 years old. Is it fair that since I suffer from this that I should have my license revoked? Please people. Educate yourself first before you begin to judge.

No it’s not fair, but that has nothing to do with it. Is it fair that some people are born retarded, is it fair that some people are born blind….should we let the blind drive to make it fair? Fairness has nothing to do with who gets a drivers license.
If this woman has another episode while driving and kills someone you love, just remember, it’s only fair that she be allowed to do this. Grow up.
