Few people expect the bar exam is going to be easy, but does anyone ever anticipate it being this labor-intensive?
“A certain Northwestern Law alumna went into labor during the second day of the Illinois bar,” an unnamed source told law publication Above the Law. “She finished the exam and had her baby, her first, at 5:58 p.m. I think that is worth noting.”
It’s definitely worth noting.
The very pregnant test-taker (who has kept her name confidential) had contacted proctors before the exam to ask permission to leave early from the exam if she were to go into labor. Usually, everyone taking the test is required to stay in the room for the entirety of the allotted time period, but proctors made an exception for the very-soon-to-be mother. One of them even helped her carry her belongings across the street to Prentice Women’s Hospital at Northwestern after she finished the exam.
Just before 6 p.m. — that’s no more than two hours after she finished her test — she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, via Caesarean section.
An email going between friends and family after the boy’s birth is below. MBE is a replacement of the mother’s name which stands for Mother Bar Exam.
We are pleased to announce that [MBE] not only finished the bar exam yesterday at 4pm, but also gave birth to our son, Baby Boy [Last Name Redacted] (name TBD), at 5:58pm.
He weighed in at 6 lbs, 6 ounces with a reach of 19 inches. Mom, Dad, and Baby are doing well. Pictures are attached :-).
While this story surely stole the thunder from other dramatic events of the bar exam this year, a candidate in New Jersey made quite a scene herself when she passed out during the exam, picked herself back up and kept on working.

Posted on August 9, 2011 at 4:44amI know that the bar exam is meant to be difficult. but for Elana Nightingale Dawson, who was pregnant the time she took her board exam however, the labor was rather distinct. The 29-year-old on the fast track to turning into a star litigator started to have the baby as she started the final part of the Illinois bar test. Demonstrating the sort of inner strength it takes to be a mom, Dawson performed breathing exercises through the painful contractions, finished the test, and then gave birth to her child via Caesarian part less than two hours later. I found this here: Illinois woman goes into labor during bar exam

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 10:00amCapitalism at work CWV. If indeed there were enough lawyers, the pay would be so low that no one would want to become one. Not everyone with a law degree becomes a lawyer. Most often it is used as a base for other high paying positions. It’s one of the few things that is actually earned, in my humble opinion.

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 1:30amI’m not so sure I share in some of your congratulations…
I don’t think that attorneys should not be allowed to reproduce! We have way too many now. Look what they’ve done to our nation!

Posted on July 31, 2011 at 12:41amAll I can do is say WOW! Congrats! And hope she passed the bar, if by chance she didn’t, still, I admire her spirit! If by chance she didn’t, I believe she can take it again next year. Wish her best of luck! Man, I admire that woman!

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 6:34pmThis woman is a moron for disregarding her medical condition and potentially disrupting every test takers’ concentration. What if she blew during the test? What now? Shes going to work 50-60 hour weeks w/ toddler at home? The stupidity and egomania of self-centered ‘I’m the center of the universe’ lawyers never ceases to amaze me. I would NEVER hire such a person, not even to handle my tickets.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 7:42pmSeriously??? Maybe she wasn’t due this week or next?? You don’t really know when you are going to go into labor. She‘s been studying to take this test for a while and it’s only offered so often. So, she felt fine that morning and took the test – making sure that she could get to the hospital (across the street!!) if needed. What is so moronic about that??? I was a week overdue with my first and I was out doing things daily! You are not an invalid because you are pregnant.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 3:30pmAs a law student… I must say I am extremely impressed. The Bar is daunting enough… but child-birth in the mix just after. Sheesh. What a trooper! I wish there were extra-credit.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 11:31amWhat a sad story.
Woman have betrayed their children for self-satisfaction and we seeing the destruction in society.
There is a reason God said women are to be busy at home.
to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (Titus 2:5)
The reason, honest love for children.

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 7:38pmNo, what’s sad is when mothers abort their babies because they might interfere with their career. This mom is to be congratulated!

Posted on July 30, 2011 at 12:24pmTo a degree I agree, but now that this country relies upon TWO income families I don‘t see going back to what it was in the 50’s.
