Cops: Illinois Woman Burned Flags She Stole From Police Memorial

A suburban Chicago woman was arrested yesterday on charges of misdemeanor theft, after police say she stole two flags from a police officer’s memorial and later burned them.

The woman, 19-year-old Zhenia Buttry, allegedly admitted to the crimes once caught. She may have also taken another flag from a different park, as well as some street signs.

How did they catch her? The police chief says tips from the department‘s Facebook page helped lead to the woman’s arrest.

UPDATE:

The title of this story has been changed to reflect that the stolen flags were “Morris Police Department” flags.

    This is ridiculus. They better throw the whole nine yards at her because all she deserves is an orange jumpsuit and a nice jail cell.

    She appears to be a wonderful 19 year old female with a shaved head and claims Russia as her home town. I’m just stating facts here, nothing to see, move along nicely please.

    o Apparently this isn’t the girls first brush with the law. Here is a post from one of the girls neighbors, from the Police station site….
    o ” Isn’t she the same little girl who spray painted every garage, fence, car and back of the house located on Illinois Avenue last year and they never charged her for it even though they found her with stolen property and one of the homeowners. testified that she was the one that did all that? Would she also be part of the little clan that is partying up in the middle of the night in backyards of Illinois Avenue? This isn’t this girls first brush with the law ~ I know as a homeowner on the same block as the apartments she lives in ~ I am happy to see her go away! ”

    I think after this escapade, we give her the Kybosh….send her back to Russia!!!

    i dont think this is newsworthy when there is so much other stuff going on.but…if she stole the flags and burned them she should be charged with larceny and destruction of property…and the punishment should fit the crime…….

    Korpiklaani..I reread the story and I believe it was two American Flags taken from a Memorial of a Police Officer. Not to be picky, but I agree there shouldn’t be exaggerations or falsehoods.

      I found another article and it states that it was “a Morris Police Department flag” and has pictures of the American Flag. They replaced it and she took it again. Plus another park had an American Flag taken and some street signs – which they don’t say if she admitted to that one. So i’m still confused was it the Morris Dpt.’s American Flag or Department Flag not very clear.

    She is not too bright – she has her cell phone number on her facebook info page. Her life consists of driving around high school kids (her friends that are still in high school – not a job). Sad sorry person. She is even lying on her page for why she was at the police station.

    Eric Holder will IMMEDIATELY dispatch a special investigator to Chicago to CONFIRM that the “victim” (I mean suspect) had her rights violated by the police. We can’t have innocent people who are just using their right to freedom of speech getting arrested. She didn’t actually steal the flags, she just re-appropriated them for speech purposes. She will be awarded MILLIONS because her civil rights were violated by the evil, racist, sexist and politically incorrect Chicago law enforcement officials.

    Maybe it was a nice thing that Chicago didn’t receive the Olympic after all.
    Everybody is leaving Chicago even Jerry Springer left. Now that’s saying something about the city.

      I will not miss springer. He’s another that just perpetuates the “all the things not to do” in a young person’s life. People watch this garbage and unfortunately, they think that’s the way to live, it’s not. It’s supposed to send the opposite message of how wrong that lifestyle is. Consequently if people aren’t smart enough to realize what it is…good riddings.

    Please clarify in your post that the flags taken were police department flags and not American Flags. She is “ suspected ” of stealing an American flag as well but no evidence she destroyed one. I hope this site doesn`t slide into reporting half truths like so many other sites online. Creating false outrage will just lead to this place becoming another discredited cesspool.
    To the point at hand I hope she gets about 100 hours of community service cleaning the memorial while wearing a sign “ I love our local law enforcement officers ” :)

      if true- an excellent point. Please make sure we can depend on this site. and even tho the police flag is to be respected also, and even if it is only a tomato (personal experience teaching my son right from wrong) .stealing is stealing

      We do need to teach them right vs wrong I agree. But they will still do what they want to do!!! Everyone has the agency to choose what they are going to do. Nobody forced her to do that and if they did she still chose to do it.There should be no excuses for her behavior.

      The problem is there are no consequences for bad behavior anymore. The first thing that is brought up is something like she had a traumatic childhood, was bullied at school, or some other nonsensical excuse. We as a nation have been purposely dumbed down by progressives and liberals. According to their playbook corruption is a way of life, jails and prisons should be run like colleges, and it’s all part of tolerance and free speech, unless it‘s something the progressives and liberals don’t agree with. I’m in total agreement with Glenn, it’s time to get back to a morale and just society where you pay for bad behavior with more than a slap on the wrist or some lame excuses.

    This 19 year old woman needs to either be working or going to school or find some other hobby. Perhaps if she had some grown up responsibilities she wouldn’t have time to desecrate our national flag. Also, I’ve never understood the taking of street signs…is it just for the thrill? Seriously, what is the point?

    I think they should make her sew up a few hundred new flags, be responsible for distributing them through a few memorial parks every weekend for a year, and have her join the road crew responsible for replacing all the signs in her city for a month. This should all be unpaid service to the community.
