Woman Uses Crow Bar While Destroying Sexualized Artwork of Jesus

A controversial piece of art in a Loveland, CO museum depicting Jesus in a porn pose is no more. That’s because a woman stormed into the exhibit, broke the glass casing around the piece with a crow bar, and tore the artwork to shreds.

Kathleen Folden, 56, of Kalispell, Mont., was arrested shortly after the 4 p.m. incident Wednesday and charged with felony criminal mischief, the Loveland Reporter-Herlad says.

“She was saying, ‘How can you desecrate my Lord?’” said Mark Michels, a stranger who helped subdue Folen. “She wanted to wreck the print, and that was it. After that, she was totally passive.”

The depiction of Jesus divided members of the quaint Colorado town, drawing protests against the piece and also “protesters protesting the protests,” according to one museum official:

The controversial piece was part of a 10-artist exhibit called, “The Legend of Bud Shark and His Indelible Ink.” The lithograph showing the son of God engaged in a sexual act is called, “The Misadventures of the Romantic Cannibals,” and was created by Stanford University professor Enrique Chagoya.

“It is visual profanity,” said art gallery owner Linda King, in an interview with the Loveland Reporter-Herald. “It disgraces the God of all creation.”

However, the piece destroyed was only a copy of the original and could be replaced, meaning this may just be the beginning of the controversy.

It could have been handled better by the museum owners, satisfying all parties. There are such things as “private showings”. This would have served as a filter for the general public. If the audience that supports the artwork (or is not easily offended by such graphics), pays to tour the museum under a private showing, then receipt of payment would be an implicit agreement that the entering audience has no issue with potentially offensive artwork. Restricting minors during the viewing, without parental concent, would have also added to the protection.

Additionally, the notion that someone has the right to go destroy another person’s art, because the sight of it made their neurons go into a spaz, is not acceptable at all. ‘Thin-skinned‘ is not a justification for destroying others’ property. Simple as that.

It isn’t art. It is what you progressives call hate speech. You don‘t shout fire in a crowded theater and You don’t burn the Koran and incite the Islam-O-Fascists to violence. By your own left-wing rules the artist and museum director should be charged with inciting a riot.

@Conservative…now whatever gave you the foolish notion that I was a progressive or liberal? I am a Libertarian and have been for years. I am also a Tea-Party organizer and very patriotic.

That said, you set a sad example of stifling expression, since a private showing of non-life-threatening artifact is not like a packed and public theater with a fire in it — a foolish and extreme comparison by you. By your own Spanish Inquisition standards, we should not have any private gatherings of any expression that is counter to anyone’s faith. I believe sir, that YOU are representing the Progressive agenda by expressly removing religious expression (however good or tasteless) from public view.

By the way, I am also agnostic, but also staunchly defend free speech, right to assembly, and religion freedom. You also don’t come off as supporting these ideals — which indicates that you are not a conservative at ALL, dear sir. Perhaps you never thought that “RINO” could apply to you, personally? Better re-evaluate yourself and rid all doubt.

All right you are a Libertarian. I apologize for mistaking you as a progressive. But just few weeks ago I heard that “fire in a crowded theater argument” used over the burning of the Koran. And tell the truth I believe in revenge. That is using the assanine arguments of liberals against them.

Now the real question is this: Were the taxpayers, which include Christians, hit up by our whore government, to finance “hate speech” against them? There is such a thing as freedom of conscience. Christians have an inalienable right not to be compelled to finance things that mock them!

      Susan Harkins is absolutely right.

The Poor Women is Not Guilty of Any Crime What So Ever. That alleged piece of art in question was in reality hate speech and can be likened unto shouting fire in crowded theater. As matter of the artist and museum’s director should charged with inciting a riot.

We must be careful to judge this matter in the same way a liberal judges the willful burning of the Koran. The principle of equality under Allah demands it.

While I don’t agree with the artist, how can YOU call yourself “freedom loving” if you don’t allow for people to be free to express themselves within the law? The artist -however tactless and vile he may be – did not break the law. The right is just as guilty of trying to “brain wash” as the left so I‘m not sure where you’re trying to go saying we’ve had enough of their views. I‘ve had enough of the left’s welfare, tax and immigration policies but I share the view of to each their own within the law with one difference: AS LONG AS I DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. She has only given the “work” more attention. A better way to express distaste would have been to avoid paying patronage to the museum – ever. Get them where it hurts – the wallet. Otherwise you give the artist attention and lend power to his works.

She should have created her own art showing her beliefs. Destroying offensive artwork is not the solution. What happens when some muslim nut gets offended by a cartoon and decides to burn down the newspaper building or kill the creator of the drawing? Are they justified too? It’s a slippery slope. Just let it go. Violence is not going to further your cause.

@rederic5 I agree with you that the two are not equal in severity. But there is the principal of escalation. It starts with property damage, which is a violent act, despite it being violent towards property and not person. The next person who is offended may use the violent act against property to justify a violent act against person. It is not right, but history has shown that it is within our rationality to do so.

I hear you there. There’s only two or three steps down from what this woman did to the throngs of butthurt muslims caterwauling because somebody wants to put even a tasteful image of Mr. Peace Be Upon Him on the internet. And they use the same impotent question, “IS NOTHING SACRED TO YOU?!” (Snippy answer: This is the Internets, BEEP. _Nothing_ is sacred on the Internets. Here’s a badly drawn pic of your prophet eating a corn dog with a bomb on his head. Enjoy.”)

What she should have done, like what you suggested, is to make or sponsor a counter work. Not less speech, more speech. I might not agree with making a picture of Jesus getting a BJ–unless it’s done by Mary Madeline, in that case I‘d say it’s well deserved–but as an American, I’ll defend to the death their right to do it. Especially when they have it in an adult-only establishment, which is what they’ve done, from what I remember. (I’m referring not to something like the Bunny Ranch, I’m talking about an R-rated movie here.)

Even if Jesus would approve, I have to say that I don’t.

We are called to be light and salt. When people view this, they think Christians are no different than Muslims (granted no one was killed and the horrible crap wasn’t taken down out of fear of retalliation), at least in the worlds view. We are called to preach the gospel, and realize we are in the world, not of it. If we go attack every sin, there will be a lot less people around.

While her actions weren’t right the only things harmed were the display case and the “art”. Once the muslims get word that an image of their prophet was also included in that questionable display… well let’s just see how long it takes for the gallery owner(s) to “disappear” to save their own lives.

I agree – she only faces a fine of up to $2000 – definitely worth it to make a display of “civil disobedience”.

You have to despise the obvious bias of the news reporter from that bastion of liberalism in otherwise mostly conservative Colorado, the loveland-boulder corridor. “Most agree this act went WAAAAY to far” – maybe in that area they agree, but not here.

They say the piece was just a copy and worth only $2400 anyway. I am sorry, but when an “artist” has to resort to sheer offensiveness just to get noticed its like the kid who farts in the classroom and thinks its funny. It isn’t art, its immature acting out for attention and should just be ignored.

Unfortunately, the local art counsel was of the same intelligence as the other kids in the classroom who laughed when the artist “farted.” – WAY TO GO COLORADO.

So cool! This artist was funded by a “grant” i.e. tax payer money! I have been involved here in Colorado with the local talk shows (Radio) about this supposed “art”. Every God loving American wanted to do this and she had the guts!

After all the sunshine and good weather on 10/10 just in time for the Socialist/Communist Rally to have a great day, and things like this obscene painting of Jesus on display…it will just keep happening until God shows up and defends Himself. Until then, we will just have to endure the ridicule and hatred that comes with believing in Him and trusting Him. We will be forced to watch the other side win.

While I don’t agree with her method, I’ll defend to the death her right to employ it … LOL
The left can form defense leagues for Murders and cop killers, with impunity, we should be able to back her.

This is a nation UNDER GOD. Though there is only one God, no PUBLIC FACILITY should ever display “God” in an obscene manner.

I doubt that it should be illegal, but it should be the public’s job to make sure their public facilities are administered by more responsible public employees.

Kathleen will get convicted, but lets see if the prosecutor uses his “discretion” to offer a plea deal down to disturbing the peace.

“Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them “It is written ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,‘ but you have made it a ’den of thieves’ ” Matt 21:12 NKJV

This isn’t so unlike the “Danish paper’s publication of caricatures that disparagingly portray the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.” And there were riots against the Danish Embassies in Syria and elsewhere. I know there is the 1st Amendment, but then there is also rather distasteful things one can do that more than a few will get outraged over no matter where you live. They have the right to make and display the “art”, but like anything the cultural sensitivities need to be weighed before one should do so.

The question should be asked, why did this artist make this, likely knowing full well how the public would react? or maybe he didn’t know?

we are a nation under God, but it is Nature’s God; not Christian, or Jewish, or Hindu or whatever. We have freedom of religion, any religion. While the nation was built upon Christian values, it doesn’t mean that Christianity is the only way to go.

Show up in mass at Loveland City Council. Insist that the director be dismissed immediately for offending the citizens of Loveland. Show up at museum board meetings with the same demands. Get the list of major benefactors and ask them to pressure the museum board with you. Keep it civil and firm, unwavering.

Insist that city property is no place for offensive material.

The museum’s mission statement is to bring diversity. Your replacement museum director and board must replace that with appreciation.

You’re all a bunch of hypocrites for supporting this woman. I thought you were a nation of laws…

You certainly wouldn‘t stand for the constitution being torn to shreds because of someone’s feelings. Unless, of course, you consider your feelings to be superior to others. Is that what you’re saying? Lots of people find your religion offensive… should gays have the right to break into your church and tear everything apart? Why not? After all, that‘s what you’re saying by calling this woman a hero.

You’re really allowing yourselves to be ruled by emotion? Bunch of spineless hypocrites… wait until you‘re on the receiving end of this new standard you’re setting. If you were at all intelligent, you’d understand what the point of exhibits like this is; to get you to set that standard so it can be turned on you.

Law or emotion. Pick one, and DON‘T COMPLAIN when it doesn’t work in your favor.

Would all these people who would like to praise her actions and help her with her legal expenses still be saying that if she yelled “how can you desecrate Muhamed (who is in the picture too)?” We think it is crazy when there is a bounty put on the head of a cartoonist for drawing a picture of Muhamed that someone doesn’t like, but taking a crowbar and destroying something and then praising her is okay. Sounds like hypocrisy to me and very Christian. I’m not a Muslim, but a proud white American who believes in acting like a civil human being within the laws established by this country.

Ps. WWJD- he wouldn’t handle it this way, but BILL AYERS sure would! (no one was hurt when he put an explosive device at the Pentagon, so I guess no harm no foul, right?)

Kathleen Foldon should be applauded by all Christians for defending the purity of our Lord and Saviour. Sometimes ungodly displays require desperate action. All God honoring citizens should contribute to a Kathleen Foldon defense fund to pay for all legal expenses. Thank you Kathleen for having the courage to do what most other Christians would like to have done. A line has to be drawn somewhere and you drew it!

Nobody has a right to “freedom of speech” on my dime. If I’m paying for it through extorted taxes, then I get a say in it. If people want “free speech”, then they need to get off their lazy asses and finanace their own work, then, they can claim “repression” or “censorship” or “Islam-like” or what have you.

She should have used the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch though. Makes a much more defining statement against those that are naughty in His sight. :)

ILFarmer – You are an example of someone who doesn’t think before he speaks. You said, “This isn’t so unlike the “Danish paper’s publication of caricatures that disparagingly portray the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.” And there were riots against the Danish Embassies in Syria and elsewhere.”
That generalization ‘ILFarmer’ is typical of someone who has a belief regardless of actual facts. So tell me how a woman destroying a crude, lewd depiction of her God, on display with public tax money behind it (against the constitution and the will of the people), is somehow equivalent to muslim scumbag fanatics putting out death hits, ACTUALLY murdering, and murdering their own people as well through ‘sharia’ law, a law which subjugates women and ANY others who don’t fall in line to that extreme corrupt law to the point of mutilation, and murder?

She destroyed property and tried to suppress free speech, so she should suffer the consequences. She has no right to censor, much less destroy, someone else’s speech. And she certainly has no right to destroy property. Who are all of these flag-waiving posers? They are actually anti-capitalists who refuse to protect property rights and menaces to freedom who refuse to defend it. What hypocrisy!
