Woman With Gun Causes Charlotte TV Station to Go Black During Evening News

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — BREAKING NEWS: A woman is in custody after a police situation in the WSOC building.No one was hurt.The woman, who is in her mid-40s, arrived at WSOC studios, located on North Tryon Street, shortly before 5 p.m. WSOC’s security guard initially spoke to the woman, who pulled out a gun at some point and put it to her head.Police were immediately called.Channel 9 went off the air because employees had to evacuate the building. The lobby area is secured from the rest of the building.The woman was apparently distraught about something in her life and wanted someone to listen to her.SWAT was called in and the woman, whose name has not been released, was apprehended about about an hour. No hostages were taken. The gun she had was unloaded, police later learned.

I pray for her, that she will now be surrounded by caring and comforting people willing to listen and help.

Posted on December 21, 2010 at 9:19pmIt’s just sad. A friend of mine works at that station, although he wasn’t there at the time. TV sometimes attracts some crazy people. I remember we had a mental patient who tried to get into the station I worked at during the morning show before business hours. He was in love with my co-anchor and had written a story about her. He was later arrested.
You just never know for sure who is out there and whether or not they are “out there.” I feel sorry for the lady and I’m glad no one got hurt.

Report Post »Poor soul. God be with her. There are too many people like this wandering around, not getting the help they need. The mental health system in this country is a mess… (I have a relative who has been committed…voluntarily and involuntarily…and the system to get these folks help when you KNOW they are desperate is beyond broken). Until they pull a dramatic stunt like this…the mentally ill cannot be involuntarily committed. And once they are…24 hours after they appear calm…they are on the street again. It is UNBELIEVABLE…

I realize that this will continue but not sure why people choose to vent in this way. The man in FL last week lashed out at the people who fired his wife, but this woman didn’t have a beef with the news station- she just needed to vent her frustration.

They went down a list of the effects that would reach into people’s lives and what effects it would have. Thefts and violence were highlighted which we have seen increase in our town. Folks have been made to feel like the government would step in and fix everything and now they are seeing that government is the problem.
