World Bank Head Raises Food Prices Alarm: ‘One Shock Away From a Full-Grown Crisis’

CNTV reports:
The International Monetary Fund and World Bank have held their spring meetings at the World Bank building in the US capital, Washington DC.
They discussed the outlook of the global economy, and the challenges that lie ahead.
It’s the fourth year of the global financial crisis, and the world economy is slowly picking up. But there are still great vulnerabilities and uncertainties.
That’s the message world financial leaders are sending out from their spring meeting.
World Bank President Robert Zoellick says the surge in food prices is the biggest threat to the world’s poor, pushing 44 million more people into poverty over the past year.
Robert Zoellick, World Bank President, said, “Of particular concern is food prices. This is the biggest threat today to the world’s poor, where we risk losing a generation. We are one shock away from a full-grown crisis. The financial crisis taught us that prevention is better than cure. We cannot afford to forget that lesson.”

“George F. Will opines in Newsweek that Americans are a nation of cowards and shirkers, observing that we have surrendered our streets – as well as our dignity – to the goblins. He points out that, concerned with street crime, we choose to throw money at it rather than to fight. Money is not the answer. More cops cannot help. They can’t be everywhere at once. More prisons cannot help. Modern prisons don’t scare the bad guy. The only thing that can help is will – the will to fight back. If we have truly lost that, there is little hope for our civilization.”

Posted on April 17, 2011 at 9:12pmOhhh please the damn ethanol has nothing to do with the soaring food prices ! It has everything to do with OIL prices. Gas and Diesel go up so does food, it cost more to grow food, costs more to deliver food and to harvest it ! Now what did Obma say when asked what he was going to do about the high oil prices ? He said you better trade in for a better car !! What an arrogant AZZ ! He has shut down drilling here and is giving our tax money to Brazil so they can drill. ! Just makes me want to puke !
Report Post »Lana40
Posted on April 17, 2011 at 9:20pmActually Fast….corn is super high due to ethanol and corn is used in most processed food. Not to mention feed for livestock. Which has brought the prices up over the last 3 yrs even more. (besides the high fuel prices) :)
Report Post »Netsurfer2
Posted on April 17, 2011 at 10:49pmLet’s take a look at the real situation:
America has more oil under it than the Saudis, yet we cannot drill for it and have to depend on other countries in buying oil.
We have about 100 years of oil beneath us and you only know that within 100 years we will not even need it at all. So what is the problem??? I’m betting on that it is all a ploy!!! Give the wealth to the Arabs??? You know this is the truth!!! It’s insane what we are doing about our crisis! Do you think for an instance anything will change???
Just something to think about!

Most corn is GMO now anyway, whiach is not a good thing. Also, if you look up moonshine recipies, ethanol can be made from so many more things than corn. Spoiled fruits, potatoes, etc. Food for fuel is a crock though unless its non edible. I now have a good sized garden and I raise chickens for meat and eggs.

Posted on April 17, 2011 at 11:44pmI asked my neighbor, who is 83, what it was like during the depression. Of course he was a kid, but he remembered having nothing but what you produced. I grew-up and still live on a farm. Without fuel I would be able to produce enough for our family, but what most are forgetting is farms can’t produce without diesal, seed, parts. Most of the older machinary pulled by horses is long gone. Most modern day farmers couldn’t take being thrown back 100+ years tech. So if the system starts to go down the only advice I can give you is
Know Jesus as your savior
Prepare as much as you can
Know that you will end up helping your neighbors as much as you can
Don‘t get on any bus heading for a camp like the Jew’s did in wwII, it may end badly
Don’t shoot thoughs who seek help, just thoughs who are willing to knock you in the head for a can of food.
If the Lord hasn’t returned by then, know WE THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE GOD AND COUNTRY will have to stand and fight.
Pray we won’t have to face this.

That’s because in America, we still have somewhat of an understanding that the free market allows tons of wealth to be created, whereas in third world countries, their government don’t allow their citizens to be free.
Increasingly, though, our government is destroying our freedoms and our ability to produce wealth. The Obama Administration WANTS to destroy America, and since the rest of the world is pegged to the Dollar, they are doing it indirectly to other countries as well.

Posted on April 17, 2011 at 9:36pmSing, it is very sad. But you have to ask why this is? We have the ability to produce all the food the world could need. Yet, there are some who keep encouraging us to burn our food for fuel (Ethanol), who put a potential threat to a small fish over the need to irrigate crops. Who inflate money so that poorer nations of the world can afford less and less food that they must import because they are to small or ill equipped to grow their own. There are some who would use a food crisis to further their own goals, even if their goals have been proven time and again to be a failure and oppressive in nature. So yes, it is very very sad.

Right now, you could be charged with “hate” crime. Any kind of “thoughtcrime” opens the door to removing political enemies by locking them up. So called “hate speech” can get into court appointed seminars.
Income redistribution. How about the right to pursuit of happiness? Ask yourself – why is it abhorrent to ask another to work for what they achieve?
Think about the numbers on the public doll, and add to them the number of public employees. There are more people working for the government than in private business today, for the first time in history. There are more people receiving some form of government assistance than ever before.

“Sorry, but I’m calling you out.”
Well, it’s about damned time someon called me out.
“You say, “Increasingly, though, our government is destroying our freedoms…“ What freedom have you lost or have ”we” lost. Seriously Doctor, give me one. That’s all I ask from you, one single freedom that you’ve lost.
You’re not talking about collective bargaining rights obviously. So tell Doctors, what freedom have you lost? Give me an example. That‘s a bold statement that you’ve lost freedom, so let’s hear it, tell us all freedom you’ve lost.
“You’re a smart fellow. Explain to all of us here on this website something that you could do a few years ago, some freedom, that you no longer have. That’s should be easy for you. Let’s hear it.”
Notice how you worded this, because it’s very important. You said “Explain … something that you could do a few years ago …”
That’s like asking a born serf (*wink*) to explain what freedoms he’s lost over the last few years.
The baseline is NOT a few years ago, but 200+ years ago with the vision our Founders spelled out CLEARLY in the Constitution, the amendments to which, even over the last 100 years, have not changed said vision very much, except to afford activist judges the ability to more easily equivocate as to the meaning of the Constitution for anti-Capitalist, anti-free-market purposes (such as with the Commerce Clause and the 17th Amendment).
But as to specific freedoms lost today, how about ALL redistributional taxes? Or the individual mandate in Obamacare. Or the insane notion that health care is a right?
Or how about Corporate subsidies? That’s not THEIR money. Let them make their own money on the free market like the rest of us should.
I know that you give a lot of time to some of your posts, so I will not abuse any readers’ ignorance by suggesting that you must address all four of these examples. I mention more only to say that I have more than one in mind.

Posted on April 17, 2011 at 11:10pmThis is something that I have been watching for sometime now. Wheat is under a major issue of going short, and maybe severely. Russia, China, Australia, and Texas/Oklahoma are all suffering from major lows in production, and potential drought. Russia has banned any wheat exports this year. Oklahoma has seen the driest four months since the 1920′s (before the dust bowl). And finally, there is a disease called wheat rust, which kills 10-60% of a crop, it is active in Africa, Asia, and could have made it into the US. If this happens, then there will be a major short fall for wheat. That is just one commodity. Walmart and other major retailers are warning of massive inflation pressures, and around June we could start to see large increases in the cost of food. Japan lost a good portion of their rice growing area in the tsunami. I highly suggest that you get at least 3 months worth of food, just in case the worst happens.

Don’t believe me look at Japan, one quake and people there are scrambling for food and water. You are a fool to not think something like that could happen near you. How about North Carolina, there are places there that will require massive help to subsist, now take that and put it through the land, since trucks can’t drive anymore, with the fuel costs. Our “reserve of oil” is enough for our military to go 40 days or so. Couldn’t last much longer to feed this nation.

They don’t have one. See we keep giving up small ground, like the “Patriot Act”, until there is nothing left to take. Wake up, your Constitution is being stolen from under your feet and you can’t see it.
How about a President going into a military action, without even CONSULTING congress, but going to the UN instead. Talk about a MAJOR breach of protocol. how’s this on for size – this goes to all marxist /progressives and we know they are on both sides of isle
1- fourth amendment supereceded by tsa and j incompitano
2-due to collective barganing and the hyper taxation of producers to fund no-pruducers, leaches, the buying power has been diminished in 2 years by over 18% cbo go look it up . this was from the last discussion over the unconstitutional hidden mandates to fund ovomit care
3- the takeing what were producer jobs from the privte sector to the gov sector to create a miriad web of overlapping inefficient beurocracie also aids in the laundering and redistibuting of producer funds to a few paracites (gov and it’s cronies)
4- the 2 aforementioned are what are referred to as hidden taxes
5- a typical result of this is the loss of chioce thus the loss of liberty from the individual and the direct redistribution of funds, which is power, which is chioce, which is liberty to a selct few.
6- this is a conscious and directed result of the implementation of marxist policy as stated by marx in das capital. those who produce must the sustain those who do not. that is theft! and theft is not nor will ever be civlized so don’t go there with the but in a civilized society redistributive policy is appropriate: theft of good people to fund lazy, melingering, or evil scum IS NOT CIVILIZED!
7- the removal of all lending abilities from the private sector to the gov. ovomit did this within a month of it’s taking of office. that’s right folks they contril all education funds and is illegal for all private money to be used for education lending.
8- the massive hyper regulation of the privte cousumer world everything from gas(85%) ethanol to raise the carbon foot print (that’s right look int your lefty media npr archives they even admitt it ) and we BURN FOOD RAISING THE PRICE OF FOOD . the result less buying power, hidden tax, more control via gov, and less freeddome for the individual
refere to the eugenisist cass sunstien and it’s nefarious treatise nudge
9- the multi billion dollar give aways the progressive caucas pours out of America to wealth and hostile nations . all in the guise of charity. redistribution.again this takes our money our resourses and funnels it else where . in this case to other nations because thir people are poor and starving. great why don’t thier gov feed thir oun people? the middle east is flowing in oil wealth because we gave the the tech. and built the well for them. this list can go on forquite some time . i’d like to ask why is it that progressive/libs don’t point to the obvious. the disarity in resources is actually lowest in America and highest in these countries where the want to send our hards earned money
so hoew many times history must show you this, how much suffering do you need to see, how high must the stacks of bodies grow? when will you learn? i would wish that you could see this but for one thing: it’s always the innocent that pay for your arrogant treachery. you can not know the sounds of starving people and the smell of thier flesh rotting because they are too weak to fight any disease.
now tell me what we have‘nt lost and where we are’nt going. you can’t
look, i‘ve told yiou before you marxist should’nt go there. live through it once already and have sworn to fight you to your end!

Rather that focus on what has been taken away, I prefer to look at what we have been GIVEN, that we DID NOT have previously. Like the volumes of onerous rules, regulations, mandates, fees, etc, that make it amazingly problematic to conduct business. But of course that is fine with you.
And now that I think about it, I do have something to add to your question.
How many people have recently lost the right, or freedom, to use and enjoy their private property due to the heinous abuse of eminent domain laws?
I also firmly believe that affirmative action laws violate the rights and freedoms of many.

Since very early in my life, I have always told people (and I have never failed to be proven right) that the federal government does nothing but screw everything up. Many years ago, they were relatively small with only small scale screw ups but now, they are very very big with very very big screw ups. They are today in the process of screwing up the whole world in concert with the other ego-maniac led governments around the world. Anyone would have to be delusional to think otherwise. (P.S. The reason for federal government to be so incompetant is that we allow the worst kind of reckless ego-maniacs to freely steal, borrow, or spend our money to keep us under their control. Posted on April 18, 2011 at 9:55amBefore you go feeling guilty for America’s ability to work productively and earn the money to be able to afford “all this food” lets not forget… that despite a government that is at this very moment turning food into ethanol (what a brilliant idea that was), America provides and has provided for decades the world with tremendous amounts of food. America has built dams that provide electricity and water for infrastructure, hygiene, cooking and irrigation. America has dug wells in remote villages providing water for everyone. We have taken the class room to them and taught many how to do these things for themselves. And we have provided financial resources for all of it, much of it free.
Don’t feel bad about being an American. Americans (most) have earned their place in the world as the preeminent ‘do good-er’. We send medications and doctors, nurses and supplies to help the sick.
How can America do all of this? Because people like you, who go to work every day and do a good job, earn enough to give to charity and enough for government to confiscate and send. Frankly, we even earn enough that the government leverages our future earnings, with back breaking regularity, to send money out of our country, it claims it is wealth redistribution. And it has been doing it for many decades.
But the truth is, as in any economy, wealth accumulates in the pockets of certain individuals. Only in most other nations it isn’t used to grow jobs or build infrastructure because of childish tribal infighting. There is no hope for these nations, no matter how much money we send them. But, food, they will eat… if it makes it to them.
America is a good place, filled, mostly, with good people, doing good for others around the world that other wise wouldn’t be as fortunate. I’m proud to be an American. I hope you will join me.

My husband is an asst manager at a large chain grocery store… there are actually less than 7-10 days worth of grocery’s on the store shelves and in warehouse. Especially in major Metro areas. A majority of items like milk are stocked nightly from the warehouse. My husband said if anything major happened and there were rushes on the grocery store… that the food on the shelves would be wiped out in 1 day… and if transportation of goods to the warehouse were halted… then approx 2-3 days until there was no food available at all in store.

Corn that could be shipped to the unfed you care about but meanwhile the cost of will rise for you for the same product in your very own “only minutes away grocery store.” You might want to check out the weight volume versus price the next time you buy canned goods, many producers have already reduced volume yet charged, if not increased, price.

Posted on April 18, 2011 at 11:56pmUnfortunateIy I think it’s only going to get worse from here. Begin to stock up on your staple items and food while it is still reasonably affordable. My family is doing just that. We think of it as a hedge against inflation. If the government keeps doing what they are doing, the value of our dollar will continue to erode, fuel prices continue to rise and that cost gets passed on to us. Buy things now while they are relatively less expensive. Buy in bulk for the best prices, shop the sales, and use coupons. Stock up on food that lasts. We get our reserve food at betheant.myefoods.com. They have some great tasting stuff!

A Doctors Labor Is Not My Right
Sorry, but I’m calling you out. You say, “Increasingly, though, our government is destroying our freedoms…“ What freedom have you lost or have ”we” lost.
You’re a smart fellow. Explain to all of us here on this website something that you could do a few years ago, some freedom, that you no longer have. That’s should be easy for you. Let’s hear it.
I’ll give you one. We’ve ALL lost our 4th amendmend rights against improper search and seizure. From “roadblock liscence checks” to the TSA’s abhorent abuse of power in airports, and soon to come, trains, busses and traffic lights.
Or how about our rights to representation in the House and Senate? When Czars and alphabet agencies, not to MENTION Presidential Directives supercede actual law-making bodies, I’d say MY Constitution has been trashed.
Now how about the long-lost 10th amendment. States rights? Ask ANY Blaze poster from Arizona where that is being enforced.
“But Bush did it too” Yup. He did. The “patriot act’ started this avalanche of 4th amendment erosion, and apparently there is no end in sight. Screw Bush too.
My Mom always said, “pick your battles”

Posted on April 19, 2011 at 11:45amI live in the USA…. just minutes away from Walmart, Albertsons, Winco, and numerous restaurants and fast food joints. Yet, since I lost my job last August, my 3 kids and I eat on $50 a week that I obtain by donating Plasma. That $50 isn’t all for food. It goes to gas, rent and food.
Report Post »Boy oh boy do I wish I had listened to Glenn and my father and purchased food storage when I had the chance. I look every day for a job, but I have hit walls everywhere I turn. With rising gas and food prices, I‘m not quite sure what I’m going to do. The economy doesn’t look like it will really come back, and with that ‘one’ shock away from a severe food crisis, probably will be caused by out of control rising costs in oil, well…… the prospects don’t look to rosy even to some of us here in America. perhaps the lettuce and onions in the back yard will actually grow this year.
