World Health Org. Adviser: Eat Meat Only Once Per Week to Fight Obesity, Global Warming

If Tim Lang, a professor of food policy at City University in London and adviser to the World Health Organization, had his way, we would only eat meat once a week. Eating meat only on special occasions, like feast days, he suggests could help reduce obesity and curb global warming.
The Telegraph reports Lang as advocating that people adopt meat-eating practices like those in medieval times:
“Let’s go back to where culture has been for thousands of years, which is meat is an exception,” Prof Lang said. “If you were growing meat yourself, it is an incredibly slow process and killing and eating an animal is a special day.
“At Christmas if we were well off we had beef. It was a big deal. We killed an animal as an exception, for a feast.”
[...]
Sir Paul McCartney has advocated Meat-Free Mondays but Prof Lang said: “I am saying instead of having one day where you do not eat meat, eat meat once a week and have really good, grass-fed meat.”
On the other end of the spectrum, the Daily Mail reports that a recent study of one area in the United Kingdom has found eating disorders in children as young as three.
In a report published by the East Lancashire Child and Adolescent Service (ELCAS), researchers found that in the East Lancashire area alone more than 125 children under 18 had received some sort of treatment for eating disorders since 2007. According to the Daily Mail, 109 of these cases were children between the ages of 12 and 16 but two 6-year-olds, four 7-year-olds and one 3-year-old were observed with eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 3:17amIMHBLO, these people don’t s_it about apple butter.
This “IS” a money driven BS story that has roots in one world governance. Apparently, no one knows whats the “best” diet for ‘man.’
It‘s a scientific fact that different cultures around the world can’t eat certain things other cultures eat or drink without any issues. Case in point: Native Americans. They have a great deal of difficulty metabolizing alcohol and many of the process foods of western Europeans, as one example.
Again, IMHBLO, much of our health problems may be traced to the vast array of chemicals added to our foods. If we only had “FOOD” in our food our bodies would metabolize our diet better and not store or chemically alter these substances that may cause an interaction with enzyme or hormone production. There by affecting other aspects of human health.
I‘ve ’read‘ about GM foods from ’scientists’ and Doctors (I’m not sure you trust them either) and it’s pretty scary stuff. In any event I‘d blame the crap that isn’t food that “IS” in our food before I‘d blame the ’food’ itself.
But, big chemical is “BIG” money and we all know, once the food leaves the farm, that‘s where ’real’ “agriculture” becomes BIG business. And money, moves the world.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 8:56amThat’s it, I’m convinced! It’s ham, sausage, bacon, steak, eggs, toast and coffee for breakfast. For lunch it’ll be any ham, sausage, bacon and steak left over from breakfast, with yummy cheese and butter on hydrogenated bread with ham gravy poured over it with LOTS of salt to season it even more! In the evening it will be bambi paddies that have been mixed with Elsa the cow burgers, with deep fried (in fat of course) french fries of hash browns, chased by a huge homemade milkshake and couple hunks of cherry cheese cake!
Any snacks will be beef jerkey.
Already started a 10 gallon spaghetti sauce with 7 pounds of ground chuck, 5 pounds of ground pork sausage and more fixins’, which will include real butter home-made bread loaves, and a gallon of home-made wine.
Can’t wait to have the whole family over and slaughter a cow to go along with about 30 pounds of skilled fried chicken. We love us some fatback too.
Dating back to as far as we can get our family tree in America (early 1600′s), we eat what this society considers unhealthy, but our average family member lifespan is 82 years. Got 2 relatives over 100 years old, so I think their whole “eat healthy” crap is exactly that.
I’ve had exactly 2 trips to the hospital since the day I was born. Once was a turned ankle on the basketball court, and stitched over my right eye from an elbow. Yep also from the basketball court. I’ll put my stamina, and health up against the screwballs of the WHO, ANYDAY!

Some Professors or someone has done a real number on your head. You are all for extermination of mankind then? …In order to save the planet? This is ludicrous. Why don’t you take a field trip out to some farms. Ranches too. I think you’ll find that the large number of acres they use in order to grow the food you eat and mentioned in your post above, are that many acres that are not being used to build housing developments. Acres that deer and other wild creatures roam around on them too. You people are truly insane. You protest against the very things that sustain you. All because some uber Liberal Professor said so. So let me ask you this… When was the last time you farted out methane gas? What are you going to do about it? Aren’t you destroying the planet? What about the car you drive? The house you live in? The city you live in? Everything you see is a source of destruction of the planet. To what end do you people want to save the planet? To the extent that you kill off every living creature? After all, we’re all Methane producers.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 2:03amChristos, not only is there no proof of what you say as far as methane clouds destroying the Amazon forests, but just for a second, think about this and the logic you are lacking. A methane cloud is flamable, right??????? Where is it coming from???? How is it getting to the Amazon forest in order to destroy it????? Use that head of yours for some good and think before pressing the keys.
Onward to the mass animal farms, of course it is slightly damaging, but, remove the animals and it all grows back greener than it ever was in the past. Ever seen a pature (sure you have, you are a farmer enlightened person), so you know that is how to enrich the soil, and then there is the rotating crops. Sure you heard of that, along with tilling into the soil the husks, vines, and leaves of the old crop, then throwing manure from those groups of animals standing around enmass to richen the soil and grow worms, then more and better food in the spring, summer, and fall seasons.

Your statement confuses me. It lead me to believe you were against their existence, along with your statements regarding the eating of meat. Sorry if I misunderstood your meaning…
Conventional food producers are keeping the masses fed. That is why they exist. The market wants what they produce.
I‘m sure you’re a nice person and I have nothing against people who chose to be Vegans. I just fundamentally disagree with anyone who believes raising farm animals and growing food on farms is somehow damaging to the planet. It’s not. Neither is drilling for oil, driving cars or anything else. The planet does not exist because of mankind. It exists in spite of us. In other words, it can absorb our methane, etc. Even the BP oil spill was absorbed in a matter of days. We should be humbled by the power of the universe. Not arrogant enough to believe WE have dominion over it.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 12:09amChristos: I have lived on a cattle ranch most of my life and can say that the methane produced by cows, horses or what have you are minimal in almost all farms, ranches. However, I can say that in the larger Agribusiness farms that there can be an issue that arises with methane production, but they still have a minimal if 0 impact on the environment.
As far as “confinement” raised animals these again fall under the agribusiness banner and mainly contain the chicken farms, pig farms and occasionally dairy farms. The reason for this has to do with ease of production, think of it as an assembly line for eggs, veal, milk, chicken, pork and what have you. Although it may sound barbaric and yes, some of the methods are you must realize we are the ultimate predator. Therefore, we are the top of the food chain. The products are healthy. Yes they can contain illnesses, but these are usually transmitted during processing. The same can happen to “organic” labeled food.
A world without sustainable farming would be a world in which almost the entire population could be a billion probably less, there would be no services, probably no established cities, malnutrition, death, disease, nonviable pregnancies and I could go on but the point is that we would cease to live as we do now. Civilization would have never advanced and this conversation would have never taken place.

Now the nutrition content per serving is a less than the 1/4 ear of corn from whence it came, but it is filling. WHO is attempting a virtually impossible task of feeding most of a continent on leftovers. The bio-engineered wheat seems even worse. Those distended bellies signify malnutrition. The hollow eyes signify starvation. We see the former in otherwise healthy American children due to our junk-riven diets. Meat does not make one fat. Over-eating food, plus the combination of man-made chemicals make Americans fat. We have both the land and the resources to produce meat. Because of war & politics, other countries & continents are not capable of doing this. But if Americans can be convinced, then the excess grains not needed for cattle could go to 3rd world nations. Posted on December 31, 2011 at 1:46amThank you. Excess carbs are stored in the body as fat. That fat does not go away unless carb intake is reduced and the body needs to convert the fat to energy. Protien, aka meat, does not cause the body to store fat — even fatty meat, or fats of any kind. Fat in the diet does not translate into fat on the body. Too much bread, pasta, potato, rice, etc — is what cause fat on the body.
