World’s Best-Preserved Ten Commandments Scroll Goes on Display Today in NYC

It’s been a big year for the Dead Sea Scrolls. In November, the Blaze reported on major developments in efforts to determine the religious texts’ definitive authors. Now, a new exhibit called “Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Biblical Time,” which will feature a piece of the oldest complete example of the Ten Commandments. These amazing artifacts will be shown in New York City’s Discovery Times Square exhibit space.

This particular portion of the Ten Commandments is on leather parchment and dates back 2,000 years to between 50BC to 1AD. It is a portion of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which account for nearly 900 manuscripts that were discovered between 1947 and 1956 inside of caves in Qumran (West Bank). It is believed that a mysterious, Jewish sect known as the “Essenes” authored the documents (read more about them here).

According to the Daily Mail, the document consists of four complete and two damaged columns. Risa Levitt Kohn, a professor of Hebrew Bible and Judaism at San Diego State University, says that the display offers visitors a first-hand view of a document that has shaped and transformed Western law.

“You can actually see, up close, the oldest parchment copy of laws that have influenced so much of western religious and secular culture,” Kohn says. “Indeed, this text has had such a large and lasting influence on American civil and criminal law.”

Written in Hebrew, the text showcases the Ten Commandments, which can be found in the Old Testament books of Deuteronomy and Exodus. Experts believe that this particular scrolls was used as a prayer leaflet.

As Mail Online notes, this isn’t the oldest version of the commandments, though it is the best preserved (the oldest is Nash Papyrus, which is at the University of Cambridge and dates back to 150 BC).

The parchment measures 18 inches in length and is three inches tall. Because it is made from animal skin and is thousands of years old, the document is very fragile to light, temperature and touch.

The museum has this to say about the new exhibit which houses the Ten Commandments:

Take a fascinating journey through the Holy Land in this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit featuring the famed Dead Sea Scrolls, an actual stone from the Western Wall from the Second Temple in Jerusalem and more than 500 never-before-seen artifacts from biblical times. Experience firsthand the traditions, beliefs and iconic objects of ancient Israel that impact world religions today.

For the history buffs – circa 2600 bce – ancient egyptian text known as ‘the book of the dead’ contains the ‘basis’ of the dead sea scrolls of 50 bce – 1ad –> circa 1490 bce The hebrew/jewish sect known as ‘essenes’ (Hyksos origins) are believed to be the ‘authors’ of much of what is known as the old testament – they originated in egypt as well (hm…) willful ignorance is no excuse. It’s all there. Always has been. Thank Constantine this, in Jesus’ dern blessed name…. Today, some believe obnoxiously proud decendents (anglo-saxons) premeate the ancient egyptian dynasties on the american, european continents, and the sliver of desert in the ME (Israel).Either way — This isn’t new — same game different times.

What nonsense. Atheists are not devoid of human frailty or fault. If we are not arguing about who’s God is better we arguing about whose football team is. If we are not going to war over faith, we are going to war over resources, territory, women or just plain hate. Children can be scared using completely secular booger men just as easily as they can by using religious themes. No tax free scams? How about GE, the biggest tax cheat around. Love the One who is the Giver of the Law. The Law was given so we would have knowledge of sin.

It follows that with knowledge of sin, we realize the need of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ. This knowledge of sin brings about repentance and salvation. Salvation brings the Holy Spirit. When we walk by the Spirit we are no longer under the Law.

Too many people have interpreted the 10 Commandments for the 10 Suggestions, relying on God’s ‘mercy and grace’ or simply writing Him off as fictional, as it fits within their lifestyle or core beliefs. Many believe it is only ‘wrong’ if you get caught, including MOST politicians. The question becomes how did your “beliefs”, become “YOUR beliefs”? Parents, friends, kids, business acquaintances, education, the main stream media (huge factor), events of life, among a great deal of other things, all influence a person’s core beliefs when they are growing up and establishing their character traits for life. Why do you think that one of the INITIAL battles fought in the progressive agenda was eliminating God from schools and anything else possible? They wanted to mold and shape the youth of the future. Not unlike the global warming campaign currently being waged from their elementary to college years. History will prove the Bible was a foundation book of our early schools in the United States. If the Founding Fathers wanted separation of Church and State, would they not have immediately addressed it back then? Why would they have had prayers inside Congress? The initial separation clause had nothing to do with not teaching about religion, it had to do with establishing a State Theocracy. Look at when God was eliminated from our teaching institutions and when the U.S.’s morality started a slow slip into the abyss.

“Thou shalt not covet they neighbors…” NOT NEEDED??? This is called “Class Warfare.” Coveting another’s property is at the heart of the Progressive Marxist playbook and is anti-God. Stated positively, man has a RIGHT TO PROPERTY. What’s yours is yours, not someone else’s. God says so. Only Satan says to the contrary. People worshiping stone and brick of a far away city is the constructive “worshiping of a carved image.” No, do not think ANY of the Commandments are…”not needed.” Especially now.

I see the addition my neighbor puts on his home, it sure would be nice to renovate our place. To covet is more in line with capitalism then communism.

Exactly–65Plus. Too many of the entitlement minded OWS crowd think you have the “Right to Life, Liberty and Happiness”, misstated for “Life, Liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness”! No one was guaranteed any of the countless programs that the U.S. Government has created to develop a dependent entitlement minded society to insure they voted for the very people that created this class with a complicit media! I am curious of the few people in the OWS crowds that have actually worked for a living, how many were employed by rich people? And I do not fall in that category, but I have never had a job given to me by someone on welfare. Some of these same people that are demonstrating would not take an entry level position at McDonalds for instance, saying it is “below” them being a burger flipper vs. considering it an entry level position to build upon. They believe they are owed everything in life and have no concept of Freedom or what a tyrannical state would deliver to them. They are simply useful pawns in the chess game the powerful elite are playing, both Democrats and Republicans. Term limits would help a great deal, but it is like asking the fox to self-police the hen house, good in theory, but bad in practice…at least if you are one of the residents. “Coveting” is a huge one. Doesn‘t Washington ’covet’ the taxpayers money?

Lotus4115 – Why are those 5 no longer valid? Last I checked, they are still very much valid to all Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Specifically, in regards to coveting your neighbor’s goods, what that meant is to have the desire to take your nieghbor’s goods for yourself…a better way to sum it up is – don’t steel, and don’t allow yourself the desire to steel. It has nothing to do with the desire to legitimately obtain goods like what your neighbor has, for yourself. What God is trying to do is to help us avoid jelousy and hatred towards others for what they have. This concept links to the core idea to “love your neighbor as yourself”.

You DO realize that there are no laws in our country concerning the first 4 commandments, . . . .and of the others, those that ARE based in legal reasoning were known to be a breaking of a law before the hebrews created their laws.

As for coveting possessions, . . . please point out our legal precedence for legal actions taken against someone who REALLY likes [and wishes he had] his neighbor’s property.

On that specific commandment, you DO realize that “his wife” is lumped with the MAN’s posessions, right???

The first four commandments aren’t reflected in our law? Deavonreye has apparently missed the following First Amendment clause: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Freedom from religion is a preference, not the law.

What’s wrong with coveting? Perhaps the fact that it motivates all property-related crimes and produces dissatisfaction with ones own possessions, makes coveting wrong. As far as #10 including ones wife with his property, that’s petty nonsense. Would you not defend your wife along with your property? If you didn’t invest yourself so much in hating, Deavonreye, you might see the value even in what you disagree with.

@ Holy Ghostbuster and @ The Third Archon —

Just wondering, do you believe that is is okay to murder someone? Is it okay to steal from someone? Is it okay to tell a lie or to lust after your neighbor’s wife, home, car etc… (defined as: a passionate or overmastering desire or craving) Most of the laws we have today are based on the 10 commandments and other teachings of the Bible. Including that marriage should be between a man and a woman and that, YES, the sex of the person you love matters. In one way or another, most of the world uses these same laws.

@Holy Ghostbuster: Why do you think this should be filed in the “fiction section” when the artifacts and what is written on them are obviously real? Just because you don’t believe in God, doesn‘t mean he isn’t real.

“do you believe that is is okay to murder someone?”
Well no, generally murder is wrong. However, you don’t give an context–morality is not substantive, it is contextual, and I’m sure you would agree that there are times when “murder” (by which I define the killing of someone without their consent and without government sanction) is/could morally good.
“Is it okay to steal from someone?”
Depends upon who it is and what you are stealing. Often times no. But I’d steal all the nuclear weapons in the world and privatize world peace if I could :D
“Is it okay to tell a lie”
To save Jews in your attic–ABSOLUTELY.
“or to lust after your neighbor’s wife”
If they’re both into that sort of thing…
      “home, car etc…”
      Human want is not immoral.
“…have today are based on the 10 commandments and other teachings of the Bible.”
Just because something is descriptively the case (i.e. our law has religious roots historically) doesn’t mean that it SHOULD be that way, then or now.
“Including that marriage should be between a man and a woman and that, YES, the sex of the person you love matters.”
And here is a PERFECT example of WHY tradition doesn’t equal normatively good.
“In one way or another, most of the world uses these same laws.”
Absolutely false–if that were true, you wouldn’t object to Sharia law, and there are roughly three-quarters as many Muslims in the world as Christians, and combined, there’s still roughly 46% of Earth’s populati

Also, what the hell kind of argument is this? You know that works of “fiction” literature also have corporeal reality too right? Like, you are aware that people can write done things that didn’t actually happen, correct? Just because they are really old doesn’t mean everyone told the truth (or even knew what the hell that was).

““You can actually see, up close, the oldest parchment copy of laws that have influenced so much of western religious and secular culture,” Kohn says. “Indeed, this text has had such a large and lasting influence on American civil and criminal law.”
That’s for sure–same reason why a bunch of morons think the sex of the person you love matters.

Well that’s a false dichtomoy–people need not be only homosexual, they can also be heterosexual just to reproduce. Or the society could be mixed between solely heterosexuals and solely homosexuals. Or the society could be comprised of heterosexuals, homosexuals, and bisexuals. Or an entirely homosexual society could use invitro fertilization to reproduce.

My point is that it doesn’t matter, and doesn’t make a moral difference.

Why was this placed half way down the page? Shouldn‘t THEBLAZE have more reverence for God’s commandments?
