‘Worst Cheap Shot Ever’?: This Dirty College Baseball Move Got One Player Suspended

On the heels of one high school baseball brawl that garnered plenty of attention last week comes a college brawl that some are calling the “worst cheap shot ever.”
During a March 29 game between the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes and the Yavapai College Roughriders, a routine bunt turned into a bench-clearing argument. But it was a tussle involving a clueless Artichoke and an overzealous Roughrider away from the commotion that has now become the center of attention. The Daily Mail Explains:
But off screen, some sort of conflict develops between the teams, and a bench-clearing brawl ensues.
As the umpires try to break up the fight, Yavapai outfielder Austin O’Such can suddenly be seen charging from left field before laying out Jake Bamrick, a Scottsdale infielder standing on second base, who didn‘t even see O’Such coming.
The force of the hit knocked off Bamrick’s batting helmet and left him lying flat on the infield dirt – where a team trainer was eventually able to help him back to his feet.
Here’s how it happened:
“It doesn’t get much dirtier than that,” sport site thebiglead.com notes.
Perhaps fittingly, the Artichokes came back from a 6-0 deficit to win the game. But even more fittingly, O’Such has been suspended. The Prescott Daily Courier doesn’t say for how long, only that it’s for an “on-field incident.” However, the Roughriders have now issued a statement saying O’Such has been suspended for the rest of the season.
“Yavapai College and the Athletic Department aspire to the ideals of good sportsmanship and fair play,” Athletic Director Scott Farnsworth said in a release. “In no way do we condone the behavior as recorded in the video, which occurred on March 29, 2012 at the Yavapai versus Scottsdale Community College baseball game.
“The YC player involved was immediately suspended by the college and will be suspended from play for the rest of the season. The college has implemented this action and will continue to work with the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) on current and future sanctions following conference procedures. Per conference rules team members from both teams involved in the on field incident have already served their suspensions.”
The Daily Mail points out O‘Such’s profile has been deleted from the team’s website.

Report Post »That makes artichokes fruits, as fruits are the reproductive, or fruiting, structures of plants (apples, pears, peanuts, beans, corn, tomatoes, melons, broccoli, etc) ; as opposed to vegetables which are the non-reproductive, or vegetative, structures (carrots, lettuce, cabbage, potatoes, etc).

Posted on April 9, 2012 at 6:31pmI‘m surprised he wasn’t expelled. I’d have ZERO interest in a player of THIS QUALITY, I don’t care if he was another Mickey Mantle. I’d NEVER patronize a school that fielded this player. EVER.

Posted on April 10, 2012 at 12:55amActually, artichokes are considered vegetables; not fruits. A fruit is the flowering, ovary section of a plant. This part of the artichoke plant is not eaten. It’s the base part of the plant that the flowers attach to that is eaten. This base, since it is not the flowering section of the plant, is considered a vegetable.

Apparently he’s gotten so much publicity from the hit he gave that football programs are actually taking a look at him. Ridiculous! See link:

Posted on April 9, 2012 at 9:40amSo what was the call on the bunt?
Report Post »Looking at my crappy monitor, it looks like the runner coming in from third base never touched home plate. Was there a play made at first? The player that got nailed at second wasn’t advancing, just taking in the sights. What’s the rule here? Someone educate me.
Oh yeah… cheap shot – but ya gotta pay attention!

Posted on April 9, 2012 at 5:16pmSeriously? Pay attention? You didn’t just put blame on the runner, did you? I played baseball throughout my childhood and only stopped when I went to college. I have never seen such a despicable act committed on the field. That outfielder’s career should be over.
Report Post »Rowgue
Posted on April 11, 2012 at 12:27pmBasically what happened was it was a typical sacrifice bunt. But when the first baseman went to apply the “tag” on the guy running to first he basically clotheslined the runner in the face with the glove rather than just tagging him. The runner was called out and then the commotion ensued. So essentially it was another cheap shot that started the whole thing to begin with.

Posted on April 9, 2012 at 12:26pmAssault and Battery happens in Sports all the time, and all the players/perpetrators get are suspended from the team. Whereas had I/you/they done such a thing in Public, there would have been charges and maybe a lawsuit over such behavior. So much for Sports teaching good ethics.
