Would You See a Movie Called ‘Dear White People?’ Hear Its Creator Speak Here

Stuffy, orchestral music plays as the camera pans over a sun-drenched set of venerable looking buildings. Students mill about. Then, suddenly, a darkened shot of a woman’s mouth speaking at a microphone cuts in. Her words, spoken with trenchant bitterness, overlay an image of several well-dressed preps, one of whom is black.

“Dear white people,” the girl intones, “breaking news: the amount of black friends required to not seem racist has now been raised to two. Sorry, your weave man Tyrone does not count.”

Minus a previous skit included apparently only to take shots at Tyler Perry, this sequence effectively opens the trailer for “Dear White People,” a new film by filmmaker Justin Simien, which apparently is struggling to get itself shown in theaters. With a title like that, and a script that includes lines like the one above, we can‘t say we’re surprised.

Nevertheless, apparently there’s been quite a response to the concept, so much so that Mr. Simien himself appeared on CNN today to discuss his film and explain what it is he hopes to accomplish:

Now, if Mr. Simien’s complaints about how the media paints all black people with a broad brush ring true to you, you’re not alone. In this author’s view, it’s time for an end to the demeaning stereotypes that get perpetuated by rap, most of the programming on BET, and any movie with a Wayans in the credits. However, Simien’s complaints are relatively vague, so to get an idea of what he’s actually upset about, we took a look at the trailer for the film itself. If you’re wondering whether the rest of it is like the brief excerpt we quoted above, strap yourselves in:

So apparently the messages that aren’t getting out regarding black culture and its tenets, according to Simien, include such ideas as “Black people can’t be racist“ and ”There‘s no need for a ’Dear Black People.’ Cops, Fox News, and reality TV let us know exactly what you think of us.” Setting aside whether those statements make sense, if we wanted to hear them, we question whether a movie needs to be made, considering that Al Sharpton says this sort of thing on a regular basis on his show. Did Simien just forget to subscribe to MSNBC when he ordered cable?

Now, you might be thinking, what if those aren‘t actually the film’s messages? What if it’s really a satire of that kind of two-dimensional thinking? Trust us, it isn’t. How do we know? Because we read the creator’s more detailed explanation for his motives in the Huffington Post (emphasis added):

There are some defensive knee jerk reactions to the phrase “Dear White People” and I get it. No one wants to be called racist, and some folks are still waking up from the fantasy that having a Black president means America has somehow become “Post-Racial.” (By the way, if the “birther movement” and the tragedy involving Trayvon Martin hasn’t sobered you up yet, just check out the Youtube comments section for the Dear White People trailer).

The truth is, my film really isn’t about “white racism” or racism at all. As I see it racism is systemic and is inherently reflected in any honest story about life as a minority in this country. What my film is about however is identity. It’s about the difference between how the mass culture responds to a person because of their race and who they understand themselves to truly be.

I’m a tall, occasionally funny, and perhaps baby-faced Black man. There is a distinct difference between my interactions with someone whose closest cultural cue to what I am is Will Smith (if I’m lucky) and those with someone who’s last impression of a Black person involved watching an episode of Cops or even worse Maury Povich.

These impressions easily turn into the way I’m treated, the level of respect I’m given, expectations placed on me and in some cases opportunities denied. (I could expound, but that’s probably better served in a different post. Or better yet just read the brilliant “Who’s Afraid of Post-Black America” by Touré).

This is a radical new perspective on what it is to be black? The insincere disavowal of any desire to make this about “racism” notwithstanding, it sounds like typical MSNBC racial liberalism dressed up with a slightly more preppy lilt. Frankly, we’d rather hear from the kid in the trailer wearing the sweater vest who gets mocked for not being an expert on black culture just because he dresses a certain way, or from the black frat member who gets told he “doesn’t count” as a black friend because he spends time with white students. Color us old-fashioned, but we prefer people who defy segregation to people who embrace it.

So to paraphrase the trailer, dear Justin Simien, breaking news: the number of perspectives on race that must be represented in a movie in order for it to not seem like a hackneyed piece of racially biased propaganda has been raised to two. Sorry, Toure does not count.

      Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.

      How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?

      And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?

      But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.

      They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.

      You do know that after MLK was schooled by the communists in Russia that he adopted a plan for interracial marriage of the whites and blacks. It was a central tenet of the Civil Rights Manifesto. You cannot get a copy of that because it is suppressed. It is in the Congressioal Record of the hearings of the Judicial Committee of 1963. No American can access these records. They have been sequestered and redacted, by GWB through executive order, at the request of Coretta Scott King shortly before her death in 2006. Transperancy is a myth.

      A black family moved into my neighborhood. As they were moving in I went down the street and met the single mother and the 18 year old son. I introduced myself and offered what ever help she might need in settling down. I talked with the son who said he couldn’t find a job and suggested the military. He allowed that he couldn‘t get into the military because he didn’t get his HS diploma. Couldn’t pass the math portion 8th grade math, by the way). A couple of weeks later I noticed that their lawn wasn’t being cut so I took my lawnmower so I offered them the use of my lawnmower. The hardworking mother made the son mow grass and all was well in the world. The kid would walk by and I’d stop whatever I was doing and talk with him about his job search and basketball as he always had one with him (Too short for the NBA). A couple of months after they moved into the neighborhood a car load of his friends came by his house. I heard the loud rap but chose to ignore it. As they were leaving they gunned it up the street with the crap blaring on the radio. I walked 150 feet to his house where he an an adult male were talking. I said “Tell your friends that this isn’t the hood and if they speed up the street and kill my grand daughter I will take my 12 gauge and kill the whole damned car load” The kid said that he’d pass along my warning. Now I can’t understand why they no longer wave back when I wave and the kid crosses the street as to avoid my house. It’s a m

      Most mainstreem people will say your comment was very nasty and even racist, but it’s only the truth you speak. Society has us all on such a tight leash that we can’t even speak our mind anymore without being labeled, or even prosecuted in some instances. Most everyone has been brainwashed by an agenda driven media. Most forms of media have purposely, and completely degraded human individuality.

      Now they have us where they want us. We are so easily cowed. They use certain stories with certain phraseology, and it’s like a whip cracking in the air. All intended to move the herd toward whatever agenda or person they want society to follow. Be it; white racism is running rampant again all of a sudden, or creating a mesia out of thin air for blacks to worship. That is if they are not printing or posting outright lies.

      Most MSNBC viewership moved to Fox a while back. Fox did a complete makeover on how they report news shortly after. Fox is now using it’s audience the same way MSNBC used theirs in Obama.

      I would love to go into how this is being done to the white population as well with progressive liberal Mitt Romney but I’ll save it for when the blaze decides to post untrue stories regarding Ron Pauls campaign standings again.

      I am completely convinced they are ALL using us.

      no, he told Blacks to “get a job” because they have ALWAYS had 5-10% higher unemployment than any other race, and that’s using LIBERAL stats, it’s really more like 10-15% higher…just like if he said “hey black people, quit killing each other”…do you ALL kill each other?       Maybe he should have also said “Hey white men (and white women for that matter) stop molesting children!“ or ”Hey white children, stop doing drugs!” Here’s a statistic for you, white kids are more likely to try illicit drugs than black children: white children are 4 times more likely to try cocaine than black children. Whites make up 66% of the 18-29 year old population, but account for 70% of the drug users while blacks make up 13.5% of this population and account for 13% of the drug users.

      There are MANY reasons why white (criminal or otherwise) are hired more readily than blacks…I’ll give you a couple to chew on

      1)blacks are (on average) much lazier and less friendly in the workplace, they expose business owners to higher levels of risk (again, on average). There are millions of good black workers, but the % are bad enough why take the chance, as a business owner, if you don’t have to.

      2)First impressions make the biggest impact. I can tell you the 80-90% of ALL young (16-30) blacks I see come into businesses to apply for jobs are poorly dressed (oh, they aren’t “poor” their ATL throwback jersey cost more than my suit) and speak JUST LIKE those supposed “stereotypes” that we whites pull out of NOWHERE

      @ Used, it’s actually funny that I went to the website you listed and read where white males were more likely to have molested or raped much younger children (meaning they’re truly peodophiles) than black males (who tend to molest or rape teenagers). And of course the statistics for drug users will look less dramatic for white people since they make up 66% of that age population. Think about it, in order for white people to be overrepresented by twice as much in that age group, they would have to make up 132% of that population and I don‘t think that’s possible.

      I looked up the crime staistics by race at the FBI database. I also went to the U.S. census to look at population by race. I must say the figures are mind-blowing. First off I had no idea the black population was so small. Second; the Hispanics and Latinos are added in the the white statisics in crime and population. It doesn’t matter what type of crime your looking at. The black poplulaiton far and away committs more crime than any race, or even groups of races combined. I would say by guesstimation they commit 40 to 50 percent of all crime.

      It‘s too bad there aren’t more like WILLINGTAUPE out there. I’m sure he feels lonely being a minority of his own race, and he feels he needs to protect them. White people do try WILLING. My family has a business and we’ve hired plenty of black people and they have never worked out for very long. One man named Frank “I was just a kid then” was a very nice respectful man who worked there filling cylinders until he found a better job. He was liked by my family and that is why I remember him. We had as many as three black people at one time also. My grandfather walked outside and find one of them sleeping on a shipping crate. He was fired. We have hispanics too who have worked out much better. There are white men too who work there too and everyone does the crappy jobs like painting tanks from time to time.       Hey Mountain Dweller, you won’t find scrolls, roads and fancy architechure in the Sub Saharah because historically, Blacks have lived on the Coasts or in the Desert. The Black ( Humans in general ) population wasn’t high enough for us to live in so many different regions at a time. Something has to give because the evidence has shown that wherever civilization developed, virtually wild animals don’t exist today anymore. Not even China had bearly a million people within a 1000 years ago. In their civilization are there historical evidence of co-exist wild animal flurishing out and about? NO. When do your research like most EDUCATED people do, you will realize that where places that have the Pyramids with statues of ethinic features and pylons and obelisks was where black poeple have once dwelled. Places like TImbuktu and Persia once had plenty of wild lions and other exotic endangered animal freely roamed but they can’t co-exsit as human society developed there. Something has to give. The evidence even shown when European explorers try to tame the rest of African continent, it was virtually untouched thus causing the begininning of the endangerment of these exotic animals in that region that barely exist today. STOP WATCHING and BELIEVING everything you see on your TV. That HIGH altitude must have EFFED your head up really bad.

      You might want to do some research yourself that is if you are EDUCATED. The pyramids, obelisks and pylons of which you speak were built by Egyptians. There is nothing to support a genetic link between Egyptians and the indigenous peoples of sub-Saharan Africa. There may be morphological similarites but that isn’t a clear indicator of genetic roots, especially in an organism as complex as the human. They are actually more genetically aligned with genetic groups from Asia. If blacks had anything to do with building the pyramids it was as slave labor. The only ruins of vast cities and lost cultures in the sub-Saharan region of Africa remain in the pages of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

      I don’t know what to make of the twaddle about wildlife. I can only guess that you are saying something like blacks are fabulous because they weren’t productive and nature remains as it always has been. Sort of like the nonsense treehuggers vomit forth daily. If you feel that way by all means relocate to Africa. There are plenty of untouched areas there.

    What these idiots will never understand is that it has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with attitude and behavior. ITS ATTITUDE & BEHAVIOR, DUFFUS!

    I don’t know how Will Smith is in his private life. But, if he is anything like the person he portrays in film, Will is a positive image, regardless of race. OTOH, we have those like Al Sharpton or that vermin, Malik Zulu Shabbyazz. Skin color is the same. Impression? Totally different!

      @LEXINGTON_GREEN, yes. First off you were one of the two commentators that have given me the most mature responses thus far in regards to this article. Black culture does teach Vengeance ( at least to my realization of my anecdotal soul searching ). But it’s not a Black culture, it’s human nature. To overcome that, blacks have to be honest with themselves and say they do want revenge, and begin the healing process. Next step they would have to stop the foolish pettiness and being so destructive and counter productive in general. At the same time Whites have to be honest with themselves and say blacks do deserve their revenge and then stop ( not fix, repair, or repay ) continuing their unjust wrong doings. If Whites wish to continue to rule, take responsibility of their power and demonstrate some wisdom of justice and not make mockery of hurtful past events and stereotype current conditions as a result of past situations of intentional applicable misfortunes. Or else again, if blacks “grow up” in just 3 maybe even 2 generations from now, then there will be conflicts beyond gang violence in the streets. There would be sophistication of trouble on an international level beyond American boarders even into other countries. Then a new alpha lion has to bear the weight of rulership.

      based on my knowledge of my family history and my experiences as one half of an interracial marriage i know that race relations have not and still do not always fall into the negative oppressor/oppressed archetypes that you present. there is evidence out there to suggest we do have the potential to evolve past tribalism. however, if the alpha dog paradigm you suggest does play out and everything goes potty over this century, my guess is things will turn out much the worse for both whites and blacks and the new top dogs will be speaking spanish.

    Looking at crime statistics the black population represents thirteen percent of the population of the U S A and 49 percent of all murders, of that 49 percent 83 % are black on black.

    Black Out of wedlock birth is 72%

    Black high school graduation rate is less than 50%

    All of these are known paths to poverty and failure

      There is a difference between acknowledging your heritage as an American (IE, American first…Irish decent second) and forging a unique ID in America…much of which has no connection to African heritage. (IE, Black first, American second)

      This country welcomes diversity, and owes much to its Irish, Italian, African, English, French, German, and Indian influences. But at the end of the day, we are Americans first.

      There is a large liberal persuasion that disagrees. Blacks need to embrace their Afro-centrism. Asians need to embrace their Asian-centrism, Hispancis need to embrace their Hispanic-centrism….etc. Next, they say that one group can’t progress without the other group giving something up. Racism ensues… It’s not rocket science.

      This doesn’t happen if people REALLY wanted to realize Dr. King’s Dream.
