Writing Analysts Claim Palin Writes ‘Better Than Most Educated Americans’

The media haven‘t yet found the smoking gun they’ve been looking for in Sarah Palin’s e-mails. Overall, the messages have been benign, lacking the excitement and scandal some hoped they would contain. That said, at least one outlet has gone a different route, questioning the former vice-presidential candidate’s intelligence through the expertise of writing analysts. AOL Weird News has more:
AOL Weird News brought samples to two writing analysts who independently evaluated 24,000 pages of the former governor’s emails. They came back in agreement that Palin composed her messages at an eighth-grade level, an excellent score for a chief executive, they said.
“I’m a centrist Democrat, and would have loved to support my hunch that Ms. Palin is illiterate,” said 2tor Chief Executive Officer John Katzman.
“However, the emails say something else. Ms. Palin writes emails on her Blackberry at a grade level of 8.5.
“If she were a student and showing me her work, I‘d say ’It’s fine, clear writing,’” he said, admitting that emails he wrote scored lower than Palin’s on the widely used Flesch-Kincaid readability test.
While some would initially scoff or laugh at Palin’s grade-level assessment, past speakers and writers of note have scored comparably. Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was a 9.1 and Martin Luther King’s famed “I have a Dream” came in at 8.8. Remember, Palin’s results were based on e-mails, not riveting speeches, so the fact that they score remotely close to the aforementioned works is intriguing .
Overall, this is good news for Palin, as her writing was found to be better than some CEOs’. The New York Daily News sheds further light on her abilities:
It turns out Palin’s writing skills are still better than most educated Americans. Global Language Monitor gave Palin’s emails a score of 8.2, which actually exceeds that of most chief executives.
“She’s very concise. She gives clear orders. Her sentences and punctuations are logical,” said Paul Payack, president of Global Language Monitor. “She has much more of a disciplined mind than she’s given credit for.”
Yesterday, ABC News took a somewhat “fresh” look at the medias’ Palin e-mail obsession. The network divulged “groundbreaking” findings as well. For instance, as governor, Palin was “…nearly obsessed with what people said about her“ and ”She once e-mailed an aide asking for low-carb foods.” Riveting, no? Watch the report, below, for more:

So I would hope so and am not surprised.
As was George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Sarah Palin and most of the Tea Party People are “self educated’, having learned from history, real life experiences, and from not only their own mistakes but those made by others.
The “educated” class insist they can duplicate past mistakes and somehow come out with different results because they are “smarter”. Yeah, right.

That score means instructions & ideas are clear, concise & on topic; it is the sign of a good communicator. In more academic or policy discussions with aides or peers one still wants to keep it at 10.5 or so for clarity. It is only in the truly academic & hypothetical discussions & posturing that one should go beyond that.

People in general read on a seventh to eighth grade level. MSM‘s writing analyst knows nothing if he thinks that he’s got something showing that Palin lacks knowledge-she‘s just doing what every writing class I’ve ever taken in college has taught.

There is an actual tool that measures the level of writing and it is not performed subjectively by writing analysts. And to tell how bias such measures are, I was told that I write at a grade 23 level in graduate school, which of course was off base. If she is at an 8th grade level she is well below what most of the intelligent and truly educated members of the Senate and executives are. Plus let’s not forget her major in college was journalism, so I would hope she could write.

On another note… I am starting to come around to the Palin camp. This report is very reassuring. I always agreed with her on the issues, but was concerned about her intelligence. Still like Bachmann and West, though.

He offers a very good case the Dreams from My Father was written by Bill Ayers but in setting out his case he has a lot to say about samples of writing by BHO being at a very low level. (By the way, I am not Jack Cashill, a member of his family, his paramour, agent or business manager — just an admirer of his work that has seen him on CSpan and been very impressed.)

As much as they put her down, try and paint her in a bad light, she manages to smiles, never plays a victim, stands tall and continues to fight for her country. She is a real force. I’m convinced that if McCain had unleashed Sarah, she would have dragged him across the finish line in a victory.

You’re probably right. His book was obviously penned by Bill Ayers, which is revealed by an exhaustive analysis by literary expert Jack Cashill, World Net Daily.
But the thing about trying to evaluate Obama is that nobody has access to anything about him. He refuses to release any of his grades or anything he wrote.
He was elected as editor of the Harvard Legal Review, many have admitted, purely because he spoke well and was black, which the university felt they needed in order to be able to say they weren’t “prejudiced,” whatever that’s supposed to mean.
There’s much secrecy surrounding this man and much, much obfuscation and trickery.
