‘WTF?‘ Why Does Palin Keep Saying ’WTF‘ About Obama’s WTF Speech?

It’s a term usually reserved for young people who want to swear without swearing. But on Wednesday night, Sarah Palin tried to cleverly introduce a new group of people to a slang acronym that starts with “what,“ crams in a ”the,“ and ends in ”fu**.” But the confusing word play she employed may have done more harm than good.

Speaking with Fox’s Greta Van Susteren, Palin opened her criticism of President Obama’s SOTU speech with a pun. Some have come to dub the president’s remarks the “WTF” speech — short for “winning the future,” a term used in the speech. That obviously worked its way back to Palin, who couldn’t resist swapping the shorthand out for the much more “popular” three-letter acronym:

VAN SUSTEREN: I’m very well, but there are a lot of Americans aren’t. They need jobs. What are we going to do about jobs? Do you have an idea that‘s any way different from what the president said last night because we’re looking for all options?

PALIN: Well, speaking of last night, that was a tough speech to have to sit through and kind of try to stomach because the president is so off base in his ideas on how it is that he believes the government is going to create jobs. Obviously, government growth won’t create any jobs. It’s the private sector that can create the jobs.

And his theme last night in the Speaker of the House was the “WTF,” you know, “Winning the Future.” And I thought, “OK, that acronym, spot on.“ There were a lot of ”WTF” moments throughout that speech, namely, when he made the statement, Greta, that he believed that we can’t allow ourselves to, I guess, eventually become buried under a mountain of debt. That right there tells you he is so disconnected from reality! The problem is, we are buried under a mountain of debt, and jobs cannot be created by the private sector. We cannot grow and thrive and prosper as a nation when we are buried under this $14 trillion debt. [Emphasis added]

But she wasn’t done:

VAN SUSTEREN: Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is still with us. And Governor, last night there was a lot of discussion about the Sputnik moment that the president talked about. Do you agree with him? Do you — and is this our moment?

PALIN: That was another one of those WTF moments, when he so often repeated this Sputnik moment that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. And he needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space, yes, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time that it resulted in the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union.

[Emphasis added]

Media Matters, the Huffington Post, ABC, the Washington Post, USA Today, and other outlets have picked up on Palin’s pun. And if her goal was securing headlines, she’s sure accomplished that.

But for someone in her position, who‘s thinking of convincing the country to put her in the nation’s top office, a cheeky joke used by high school and college-aged kids wasn’t all that presidential.

Sputnik is what caused the downfall of the Soviet Union? Really? I remember the sputnik launch and the entire space race. I remember the cold war and people ducking under their desks in school when they had drills for nuclear missle attacks. Never in all of this would I have considered Sputnik to be the beginning of the end of the USSR.

Sarah, in what history book can I find this information?

Sweet Sarah the Narcicist-in-Chief couldn’t resist the siren call of millions of dollars. That was far more important than “serving” the citizens of Alaska.

I counted and recounted and personally I can only come up with 50, but if we were counting just the Islamic ones they would be exactly 57, but I tend to believe Obama as he is the one with the Columbia and Harvard education.

Even in twisting the meaning of the President’s analogy, though, Palin twists history to suit the view from her front porch.

While it’s tough to pinpoint a single reason for the dissolution of the USSR, the space program isn’t one of them, at least not in the substantive way that Palin imagines. The Cold War arms race is the factor that most closely tracks here, and while the Sputnik 1 launch was a shot across the bow in that war, it was a drop in the arms race bucket.

Palin then goes on to suggest that what America needs is a “Spudnut moment,” explaining that there’s this successful small business in Washington state, and that America needs to do…what?

Have lots of successful small businesses? Stop preventing successful businesses like The Spudnut Shop from being successful? Palin never really explains how this is supposed to work, but I think the equation goes something like this: “Sputnik moment” + “Something that sounds like Sputnik but isn’t”=WIN!

Now, I have good friends, whom I respect a great deal, who insist that Palin is no idiot. Out of deference to them, I’m going to go ahead and assume that Palin just thinks her audience is made up of idiots.

Palin’s first mistake (or misdirection, if she’s no idiot) is in misplacing the US’ role in the President’s Sputnik analogy. Palin seems to be cautioning America against launching its own metaphorical Sputnik, a complete misreading of the meaning of “Sputnik moment.”

Sarah Palin‘s inability to sit through President Obama’s State of the Union speech surely has more to do with her attention deficit disorder than the actual content of the speeck itself.

AKMIIKEUS – you talk about attention deficit as if it were a bad thing. Here’s a bit of homework for you – rather than speaking with such obvious ignorance of what attention deficit disorder really is, perhaps you could try visiting the library to research the matter some day….or at very least Google it for a minute or two. The extra homework may even help you with those pesky spelling issues. What you would find, is that an incredible percentage of the highest achievers, successful entrepreneurs, physicians and even professional athletes have attention deficit disorder. I myself have attention deficit disorder and own 2 successful businesses, am happily married and have 6 brilliant children – some also blessed with ADD. Was it easy to be bored to tears through all my years of public educaton – not knowing that ADD was a factor? Absolutely not, but I thank God every day now for an understanding of how I was created. I also thank Him for creating many other restless, driven individuals like myself, that aren’t afraid of original thought, risk taking, or even the opinions of others. Where would our world be without these gifted, brilliant and wonderful people? I’m sure you can look around at your own life and answer that question.
BTW – I’m not aware of any ADD admission by Ms. Palin, but if in fact, she is not a member of the “ADD club”, I’m certain she would be flattered to be labeled as such. You yourself should hope to be so lucky.

Good on you that you’re not afraid of her. You just keep telling yourself that while you rush here every night to denounce her in post after post after post.
Now go back to your Lib friends and cheer each other on – yes, Palin, who brought a massive over 600 seat win and was instrumental in taking back the House and control of state governorships is nothing to be afraid of. She’s just dumb. Unlike your Joe ‘the gaffe master’ Biden. Or your President who has brought our economy to the brink of ruin, our wars to expansion and record death tolls and our foreign policy to joke status. Not to mention what he’s done to your Democrat Party.
You just keep hammering Palin. We could use another 600 plus seat win in two years.

Is saying that people in rural area are bitter and clinging to their guns and religion because they disagree with you Presidental. Or how about a first lady stating for the world that she has never been proud to be an American until her husband was elected President.

Say this for Greta Van Susteren: she was earnestly asking Sarah Palin if she had a serious alternative proposal to create jobs.
But the former Alaska governor preferred to deliver her own script about the President’s yawn-inducing State of the Union address. “His theme last night was wtf, winning the future,” Palin remarked (via Politico). “I thought, okay, that acronym–spot on. There were a lot of wtf moments throughout that speech.” Greta, for her part, just ignored the joke and continued on the refrain of a practical solution to job creation.
Eventually, Palin gets around to answering the question, and then it just got worst.

It is not only obvious now but a fact that Sarah Palin flunked history. Alaska should be so proud.
Sarah was a victim of a child left behind.

In a way – the attacks on Palin are invigorating the Tea Party – which really gets me smiling. There is nothing more satisfying than to see an idiot confirm the fact by their own words.

Right on, the liberal and progressive media propaganda machinery wants us to have their opinion since they feel we cannot possibly know what to think or what to believe. Let everyone make up their own mind, and have the freedom to express their own oppinions.

The 2012 Obama campaign has already pressed into overdrive, as I hold that the re-election wheels have been going from day one of his being in office.

Also I hold the oppinion that the administration is out of touch with the people of America; and is set out to turn us into a socialist and marxist state ruled by an ‘enlightened elitist tyranny’.

Poor Mrs. Palin. She obviously can’t comprehend the words of our President.

I guess her analyst team had the night off and were unable to help her create a more educated response. Let me break it down for you, sister.

President Obama was making a reference to the Sputnik moment to compare that generations’ race against the Soviet Union to that of our current competition with China. President Obama wants us to rise above the economic and technology growth race against China.
He wants us to apply the same commitment to developing new technology that will provide cleaner energy and less reliance on foreign oil as the Space Race generation used to get us to the moon. You would think a woman that claims she enjoys the vast wilderness Alaska has to offer would appreciate that.

Then again, Obama could say two plus two equals four and Palin would disagree.

She is right on everything she said, while some may make a big deal of the WTF comment, it was the White House and Obama who picked “Win The Future” phrase. Where’s their head as analytical as they are to word play and word police. Liberals have convolutions as the thought of misspelled word or misplaced punctuation. So to say they had no idea is a farce and most likely intended as to “ how dare the service class question us”. I for one am glad she pointed it out.

As much as the Liberals / Progressives dictating who should and shouldn’t have a voice has grown tiresome. They even had a phrase for i in the Sixties “Truth to Power” and that is just what the tea party movement is doing speaking truth to power. Power of the oppressive government that wants to manage down to what we eat. If that is not totalitarian, I don‘t know what is and I’m a Cuban who was born under a totalitarian tyrant, Fidel Castro…!

God, I love Sarah! I’d be doing the same thing if I were in her position. But she’s probably undermining any chance of running for president. That’s good, actually. The whole rotten system is about to collapse. The piper must be paid, blame and punishment must be exacted. It would be worth being pres then, if one had a good plan. Not until after the financial earthquake is over, though..

I love Sarah and the family, BUT, this is a long ways a way from the RNC speech she gave two and a half years ago.

I hope she keeps doing what she has been doing for the last year or so. She won‘t be nominated for president and I’m glad………. There I said it!….. I really like her and agree with everything she stands for and believes in, but she is losing it, in my opinion, because of all the extra pressure she gets from both Dems and Repubs. Watching the reality show has not really endeared her to me anymore either. The Christians she sort of represents in politics will start shying away as well if she continues down the pop culture path with comments like, “WTF”.

The Republican party is just as committed to destroying white America as the Democrats are. They just believe it can be done without raising taxes.

They really believe that the Civil Rights movement, which outlawed free association and private property rights that non-whites don’t approve of, was an expansion of freedom and liberty. If you don’t believe me, just go to $arah Palin’s Facebook page and read the comments on her tribute to Martin Luther King. First off, no lover of freedom and liberty would be offering any kind of tribute to King. Palin isn’t a friend of freedom and liberty. She’s a money grubbing opportunist, who resigned her post as governor of Alaska in order to make tens of millions of dollars. She’s riding the gravy train, and she has no intention of doing anything to slow it down, such as telling the truth about King.

Either that, or she really believes the garbage she posted on her page:

The new Republicans in the House have already started waffling when they agreed to “let’s all sit together”. The LEFT has a visceral hatred for Palin. Why? Because she scares them to death. Because she is the antithesis of everything they are…and even so for many of the Republicans. Get off the “beat up Palin band wagon” and give her some support. These are drastic times in our country…So we need drastic measures. Anything short of a Bachmann and/or a Palin in 2012 is a waste and just kicking the can down the road. Consider this, while the libs are concentrating on everything Sarah is saying and doing, they are not seeing what other conservatives are doing in the background setting up their run in 2012. So even if she is not going to be a viable presidential candiddate, she is doing some very valuable work in drawing fire and allowing others to work with minimal opposition.

Not that I’m aware of. Some may have. Many GOP that I saw running were running on “Stop Obama/Pelosi” more than anything else. Which is not to suggest a lack of other positions, rather, the focus was fixed firmly on being not only the party of no, but the Party Of Hell No! ™. Which, I endorse.

The “jobs” thing was a mantra created by the Left after the election in order to try and change the frame of refererence in the national debate. They also tried to slip in “they want us to stop opposing each other” as well, but that was too much for even people dead for five years to stomach.

Sputnik went up on Oct.4 1957; we landed on the moon on July 20 1969. Even if we started investing in research and education that very day, well that would make the scientists that were now there from the investment 12 years old. Last weelk some 51,000 Americans were added to the unemplyment rolls. Where are the jobs the Obama stimulus plan was supposed to create ? Our economy is not getting better. Obama‘s plan to increase the national debt isn’t the answer, more government control isn’t the answer. Private interprise is the answer, acitalism is the answer. Yet the Obamanomics have hindered private interprise to the point that it can’t do what it has always done to boost the American economy. “ Winng the future ” was a remark that Obama used often in his SOTU address. We need to focus on the present. Then the future will take care of itself.” Fundamental change in America shoudn’t lead to the crippling oof our economy by an ever increasing national debt. Martin luther King Jr’s speech of “ I Have A Dream ” has moved toward it’s fulfilment these past five decades. Obama‘s dream hasn’t gone anywhere except deeper into debt and more unemployment. Let’s VOTE him out in 2012.

He’s completly unqualified to lead our nation out of the economic crisis it finds ititself in today. Socialism can’t improve capitalism. What we need NOW is less socialism and more capitalism., less government and more private interprise.
