‘WTF?‘ Why Does Palin Keep Saying ’WTF‘ About Obama’s WTF Speech?

It’s a term usually reserved for young people who want to swear without swearing. But on Wednesday night, Sarah Palin tried to cleverly introduce a new group of people to a slang acronym that starts with “what,“ crams in a ”the,“ and ends in ”fu**.” But the confusing word play she employed may have done more harm than good.
Speaking with Fox’s Greta Van Susteren, Palin opened her criticism of President Obama’s SOTU speech with a pun. Some have come to dub the president’s remarks the “WTF” speech — short for “winning the future,” a term used in the speech. That obviously worked its way back to Palin, who couldn’t resist swapping the shorthand out for the much more “popular” three-letter acronym:
VAN SUSTEREN: I’m very well, but there are a lot of Americans aren’t. They need jobs. What are we going to do about jobs? Do you have an idea that‘s any way different from what the president said last night because we’re looking for all options?
PALIN: Well, speaking of last night, that was a tough speech to have to sit through and kind of try to stomach because the president is so off base in his ideas on how it is that he believes the government is going to create jobs. Obviously, government growth won’t create any jobs. It’s the private sector that can create the jobs.
And his theme last night in the Speaker of the House was the “WTF,” you know, “Winning the Future.” And I thought, “OK, that acronym, spot on.“ There were a lot of ”WTF” moments throughout that speech, namely, when he made the statement, Greta, that he believed that we can’t allow ourselves to, I guess, eventually become buried under a mountain of debt. That right there tells you he is so disconnected from reality! The problem is, we are buried under a mountain of debt, and jobs cannot be created by the private sector. We cannot grow and thrive and prosper as a nation when we are buried under this $14 trillion debt. [Emphasis added]
But she wasn’t done:
VAN SUSTEREN: Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is still with us. And Governor, last night there was a lot of discussion about the Sputnik moment that the president talked about. Do you agree with him? Do you — and is this our moment?
PALIN: That was another one of those WTF moments, when he so often repeated this Sputnik moment that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. And he needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space, yes, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time that it resulted in the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union.
[Emphasis added]
Media Matters, the Huffington Post, ABC, the Washington Post, USA Today, and other outlets have picked up on Palin’s pun. And if her goal was securing headlines, she’s sure accomplished that.
But for someone in her position, who‘s thinking of convincing the country to put her in the nation’s top office, a cheeky joke used by high school and college-aged kids wasn’t all that presidential.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 7:46pmEven in twisting the meaning of the President’s analogy, though, Palin twists history to suit the view from her front porch.
While it’s tough to pinpoint a single reason for the dissolution of the USSR, the space program isn’t one of them, at least not in the substantive way that Palin imagines. The Cold War arms race is the factor that most closely tracks here, and while the Sputnik 1 launch was a shot across the bow in that war, it was a drop in the arms race bucket.
Palin then goes on to suggest that what America needs is a “Spudnut moment,” explaining that there’s this successful small business in Washington state, and that America needs to do…what?
Have lots of successful small businesses? Stop preventing successful businesses like The Spudnut Shop from being successful? Palin never really explains how this is supposed to work, but I think the equation goes something like this: “Sputnik moment” + “Something that sounds like Sputnik but isn’t”=WIN!
Now, I have good friends, whom I respect a great deal, who insist that Palin is no idiot. Out of deference to them, I’m going to go ahead and assume that Palin just thinks her audience is made up of idiots.
Palin’s first mistake (or misdirection, if she’s no idiot) is in misplacing the US’ role in the President’s Sputnik analogy. Palin seems to be cautioning America against launching its own metaphorical Sputnik, a complete misreading of the meaning of “Sputnik moment.”

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 8:49pmAKMIIKEUS – you talk about attention deficit as if it were a bad thing. Here’s a bit of homework for you – rather than speaking with such obvious ignorance of what attention deficit disorder really is, perhaps you could try visiting the library to research the matter some day….or at very least Google it for a minute or two. The extra homework may even help you with those pesky spelling issues. What you would find, is that an incredible percentage of the highest achievers, successful entrepreneurs, physicians and even professional athletes have attention deficit disorder. I myself have attention deficit disorder and own 2 successful businesses, am happily married and have 6 brilliant children – some also blessed with ADD. Was it easy to be bored to tears through all my years of public educaton – not knowing that ADD was a factor? Absolutely not, but I thank God every day now for an understanding of how I was created. I also thank Him for creating many other restless, driven individuals like myself, that aren’t afraid of original thought, risk taking, or even the opinions of others. Where would our world be without these gifted, brilliant and wonderful people? I’m sure you can look around at your own life and answer that question.

Honey, don’t you know that Killa in Wasilla has said that no one in the country wants to be like Palin? Heavens! You‘re going to hurt Killa’s feelings. Just because the voters sent Killa’s buddies home in November and the stock market has come to life because people are hiring again due to the prospects of some sanity in D.C., that you think there are conservative Americans?! You don’t REALLY think that most of America wants freedom and prosperity, now do you?

Do you have anytihing to offer that is not juvenile attacks.
It‘s what folks like you do when you don’t have a reasoned arguement to offer.
Too Much Spending, Too Much Government Waste, Too Much Regulation – I agree.
Also – OBAMA has “lied” (using your definition for Bush Lied) . . . and has no credibility
as a leader . .. .things he hasn’t done that he said he would do . . .
2008 – Unemployment will not exceed 8% (opps – let’s Blame Bush)
2008 – Transparent Government (opps – let’s not talk about it)
2008 – Unify the Country end Bi-Partisianship (opps – chronic failure here – let’s ignore)
2008 – Require all Bills posted for 72 hours for Citizens to review before vote (opps – let’s ignore this)
2008 – Closure of Gitmo (opps – let’s Blame Bush)
2008 – Out of Iraq by 2010 (oops – let’s Blame Bush – but take credit for success)
2009 – Stimulate Job Growth (opps -let’s Blame Bush)
2009 – Create an spirit of cooperation (opps – Czars, EPA regulations – oh well, WTF)
2010 – Did everything possible to clean up BP mess (opps – refused foreign help – delayed action)
2011 – Fix Deficit, Make Tough Choices, Win the Future (opps – said this kind of thing in 2008 & 09
things got worse . . . oh well, WTF.)
The left is wreckless and irresponsible – they know it . .. we know it . . . so all you have is sarcasm and harassment. At least the sarcastic right has ideas that will make this country stronger, better and more prosperous and powerful (things you may not value).

You guys are bullies – fortunately women have figured out that liberal men aren’t tough enough to engage in a fair fight (opps – I mean dialogue).

Right on, the liberal and progressive media propaganda machinery wants us to have their opinion since they feel we cannot possibly know what to think or what to believe. Let everyone make up their own mind, and have the freedom to express their own oppinions.
The 2012 Obama campaign has already pressed into overdrive, as I hold that the re-election wheels have been going from day one of his being in office.
Also I hold the oppinion that the administration is out of touch with the people of America; and is set out to turn us into a socialist and marxist state ruled by an ‘enlightened elitist tyranny’.

I guess her analyst team had the night off and were unable to help her create a more educated response. Let me break it down for you, sister.
President Obama was making a reference to the Sputnik moment to compare that generations’ race against the Soviet Union to that of our current competition with China. President Obama wants us to rise above the economic and technology growth race against China.
He wants us to apply the same commitment to developing new technology that will provide cleaner energy and less reliance on foreign oil as the Space Race generation used to get us to the moon. You would think a woman that claims she enjoys the vast wilderness Alaska has to offer would appreciate that.
Then again, Obama could say two plus two equals four and Palin would disagree.

“Valid points? Didn’t the Republicans campaign on jobs and win the house based on their promises to create jobs (out of thin air)? They have yet to produce one plan for a solution and she continues to use t-a-l-k-i-n-g p-o-i-n-t-s. No specifics from WTF.”
Not that I’m aware of. Some may have. Many GOP that I saw running were running on “Stop Obama/Pelosi” more than anything else. Which is not to suggest a lack of other positions, rather, the focus was fixed firmly on being not only the party of no, but the Party Of Hell No! ™. Which, I endorse.
The “jobs” thing was a mantra created by the Left after the election in order to try and change the frame of refererence in the national debate. They also tried to slip in “they want us to stop opposing each other” as well, but that was too much for even people dead for five years to stomach.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 1:52pmHow about Obama’s statement that “because we invested in research and education we beat the Russians to the moon”?
Report Post »Sputnik went up on Oct.4 1957; we landed on the moon on July 20 1969. Even if we started investing in research and education that very day, well that would make the scientists that were now there from the investment 12 years old. Obama’s statement that it was investment that got us to the moon is ridiculous.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 2:17pmPer the story: ” Some have come to dub the president’s remarks the “WTF” speech — short for “winning the future,” a term used in the speech. That obviously worked its way back to Palin, who couldn’t resist swapping the shorthand out for the much more “popular” three-letter acronym”
Clearly this “WTF” speech identification didn’t start with Palin – she just went with what “SOME” had already said. Kudos to Sarah. Bad on the author for not saying who the ‘some’ are.

Posted on January 27, 2011 at 5:19pmThe left always paints the opposition crazy or stupid. They also seek to make a scandal out of nothing if they can not dig one up. They lose on the issues. They can not afford that battle. When pressed int it they change the subject or out right lie. They fear Sarah so have and will do all of the above as a preemptive strike against her getting elected president.

Obama said, “We are the nation that put cars in driveways and computers in offices; the nation of Edison and the Wright brothers; of Google and Facebook.”
And then the government outlawed Edison’s great invention, made the Wright brothers’ air travel insufferable, filed anti-trust charges against Microsoft and made cars too expensive to drive by prohibiting oil exploration, and right now — at this very minute — is desperately trying to regulate the Internet.

Posted on January 28, 2011 at 4:05amPresident Obama is an Ostrich that obvoiusly has his head stuck in the sand. His socialist /marxist mind can’t comprehend the real problems our nation is facing. Last weelk some 51,000 Americans were added to the unemplyment rolls. Where are the jobs the Obama stimulus plan was supposed to create ? Our economy is not getting better. Obama‘s plan to increase the national debt isn’t the answer, more government control isn’t the answer. Private interprise is the answer, acitalism is the answer. Yet the Obamanomics have hindered private interprise to the point that it can’t do what it has always done to boost the American economy. “ Winng the future ” was a remark that Obama used often in his SOTU address. We need to focus on the present. Then the future will take care of itself.” Fundamental change in America shoudn’t lead to the crippling oof our economy by an ever increasing national debt. Martin luther King Jr’s speech of “ I Have A Dream ” has moved toward it’s fulfilment these past five decades. Obama‘s dream hasn’t gone anywhere except deeper into debt and more unemployment. Let’s VOTE him out in 2012.

Posted on January 28, 2011 at 4:10amAmerica‘s biggest need isn’t “ winning the future ”, it’s rescuing the present. Obama and his cronies still don’t get it. He’s completly unqualified to lead our nation out of the economic crisis it finds ititself in today. Socialism can’t improve capitalism. What we need NOW is less socialism and more capitalism., less government and more private interprise.
