Bin Laden of the Internet: American-Born al-Qaeda Mastermind Anwar al-Awlaki Killed

Confirmed by a senior U.S. official, Yemen’s Defense Ministry said Friday that Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical Islamic cleric and a high-ranking member of al-Qaeda has been killed. Al-Awlaki is a 40 year old U.S. citizen born in New Mexico, and has been linked to al-Qaeda in Yemen.

Al-Awlaki is believed to have been the mastermind behind attacks on the U.S including in 2009, the failed Underwear-Christmas Day bomber, and the mail bombs plot last October. He is also linked to the Time Square bomber and the Ft Hood shooting attacks. Al-Awlaki’s sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers and also by accused Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan.

Anwar al-Awlaki was known as al-Qaeda’s Internet expert, and is often described as the bin Laden of the Internet. Here is a video of al-Awlaki calling for the killing of Americans:

You are correct there. This is a blessing and a shame. It is a blessing that he was killed and can’t cause any more trouble but as a believer, I feel that it is a shame that he didn’t repent and accept God as the One True God and Jesus as his Lord and Savior. I really wish that everyone in the world would be smart enough to make repentence and accept God and Jesus as who they truly are before they die. Other than that, I say God Speed to all who terrorize and kill people just because that is how they get off on themselves.

No, honey, you’re confused. This guy was killed because: “Al-Awlaki is believed to have been the mastermind behind attacks on the U.S including in 2009, the failed Underwear-Christmas Day bomber, and the mail bombs plot last October. “He was an innocent man”: Nope. Strategy and tactics makes him a prime target in warfare. Wars are not fought with lawyers (although I do like the idea of thinning that herd).
“-murdered for expressing his opinion[that people have the right to resist murdering american invasions and occupations]“: See first response. This fellow was a zealot preaching fo the cause (i.e., Islam), so his beef is religious, not political. His machinations led to attempts (both successful and not so much) that killed unsuspecting folks because they were American… and also not Muslim. Sought ought by men of violence who wanted his guidance.
“He never killed anybody.”: See first and second response. This guy smugly embraced his role of potentate and strategist. By your rationale, Hitler never killed anybody.
“Like you justify killing iraqis or adfghan he believed it was all right to resist through violence american invasions!”: Granted, the bombing of thugs tends to stir up said thugs up and I’m not big on policing the world, but this rant indicates you’re okay with unrestrained brutality… as long as its committed by zealots and thugs on their own. I’ll bet you also have a soft spot for cop killers.
“may God have mercy on his soul.[And americans murdering troops believe if they die they get rewarded in heaven too! At the banquet of the Lord if they're christian[symbolic imagery-like sexual ecstasy for muslims]“: Uh, what? I have to understand to comment.

      @Islesfordian,

Really, where exactly in the constitution is this exception to the rule? The 1st amendment was meant to protect the most vile of speech. A charge of treason, the highest offense to this country can only be determined in a court of LAW!

      Here is the 6th amendment.

“In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.”

      Round Three:
I’ve researched your “freedom fighters”. First off, I won’t even accept that appellation as a euphemism. These goons care nothing for freedom. They subscribe to religious subjugation. You see this in the treatment of their own peoples. Their fight has nothing to do with freedom; it is all about submission.
Second, I’ve read the direct quotes from these “freedom fighters.‘ You may not beleive they’re fighting, killing & dying for Islam, but it appears they sure as hell do. I‘ll not waste my time presenting another laundry list of ’why (insert Islamic thug’s name here) believes eveyone who is not Muslim should be purged.’
Third, (& here is where your slippery semantic shenanigans have some element of truth… a sterling example of a half-truth): The church & the state are one & the same for these “freedom fighters.“ Religion IS politics for these ”freedom fighters”. Once again, it’s in their own words.
Believe as you will… you certainly have the freedom to do that. Funny how you unabashedly defend goons who would take that right from you. There‘s leftist trait that just won’t die: The embrace of brutal, dictatorial thugs.
I wish no ill upon anyone in their pursuit of religion… until said religion asserts that I must die because I’m not on Team Islam. Frankly, I say leave them alone. As I said, I don’t like the U.S. playing World Cop.
You can ignore the words of these zealots… I choose to take them at their word.

Please all knowing, tell us what these two Conservative leaders here were saying. We are too stupid to understand as you suggest and need you to tell us what “shall not engage in assassination means.”

Oh, and please don’t parrot the WSJ or Charles as you did before.

”No person employed by or acting on behalf of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, assassination.”
Ronald Reagan 1981 Executive Order 12333

“The law of war does not allow proclaiming either an individual belonging to the hostile army, or a citizen, or a subject of the hostile government, an outlaw, who may be slain without trial by any captor, any more than the modern law of peace allows such intentional outlawry; on the contrary, it abhors such outrage. The sternest retaliation should follow the murder committed in consequence of such proclamation, made by whatever authority. Civilized nations look with horror upon offers of rewards for the assassination of enemies as relapses into barbarism.”
Abraham Lincoln 1863 Section IX of General Order 100

      Bottom up
      Top down
      Inside out

Cheering of assassinations of US citizens is top down…wake up…

Using Lincoln to argue against what you perceive as govt. thuggery? That’s rich. I guaran-damn-tee you: If Lincoln had satellites, eaves dropping technology & Predator drones, the south would have been subjected to all manner of such attacks & intrusions. I am sick to death of this man being put forth as a champion of liberty; he was anything but. He “saved” big govt…. or, if you like, fathered it. The irony of his death after reading the quote presented should not escape any serious student of history. Lincoln’s proclamation amounts to protectionism for politicians. It’s of the same vein that prompted Peter King to say guns should be banned near legislators.
As for Reagan. Yep, I‘ve NEVER heard the ol’ plausible deniability card played, have you?
I get it. Sometimes the ugliness of man & politics doesn’t make for unpleasant dinner conversation. Sometimes fine words amount to the stroking of egos & patting of heads. I don’t care is this thug was targeted or just in the right place at the right time. He was a zealot & continuing menace. The world is never going to be the squeaky clean affair some pine for.
I get your discomfort, but I’m not going to bother defending the indefensible (in this case, Mr. Al-Awlaki). The day I start calling for death to people because they don’t subscribe to my brand of crazy & I become a rock star in the world of monsters, I will start sleeping with one eye open & will expect to reap what I’ve sown.

      Hey, WRONGallalong,

First, Neo-Con is just a term conjured by the Left to try to divide the conservative movement. You shouldn’t drink that kool-aid, unless of course you ARE a lefty. Second, do you really think the govt MANUFACTURED Al-Awlaki as a boogie man? If so you are either one of those treasonous “Truthers” or you are one of the terroists yourself. And finnally, that “2 minute hate” you mentioned has been raging on for over 10 years now…

      GhostOfJefferson,

Doesn’t matter who coined it. I have no idea if you are correct or not about WFB, but I know that in recent years, as the wars in the Middle East have dragged on, “Neo-Con“ has been used by the left to divide the conservative movement and unfortunately our Libertarian ”friends” (who favor such positions as allowing Iran to have nukes) have picked up the ball and ran with it…

All conservatives (fiscal, social, neo and libertarian) should be UNITED behind the solitary goal of getting BHO out of the WH and his socialist breathren out of the Senate.

The problem is that it seems like the attitude among many Libertarians (like WRONGallalong) is that they would more likely sit at home than vote for anyone other than Ron Paul against BHO. My messeage is this: “GET YOU A$$ to the polls and vote for WHOEVER the Repub nominee is… Even if you don’t like it.”

I held my nose and voted for McCain in 08, but many on the right sat at home, and now you see what has happened as a result. Those on the Right who sat out the 08 election because they didn’t like John the RINO are some of the most dispicable humans in America. They are the reason BHO is in the WH and the reason this country is on the brink of disaster. Those folks better get out in 2012 and make amends…

This is bad news for the Constitution. If the USA killed him, then this means they just threw away the Constitution again. What‘s the point of having a Constitutional Republic if the government doesn’t obey it?

William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!

Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

William Roper: Yes, I’d cut down every law in England to do that!

Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned ’round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man’s laws, not God’s! And if you cut them down, and you’re just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I’d give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety’s sake!

This jack wagon, in my opinion, was one of the those American citizens… For what it’s worth, I believe Timothy McVeigh stopped being an American citizen when he plotted and killed all those people in Oklahoma…

      I agree.

A sitting U.S.A president (who ironically probably wasn’t born in the USA) gives an “order” to kill an American born in New Mexico. When did we get a dictator?

If radical muslims are our enemy (which they are) then Congress should DECLARE WAR on Al Qaeda and its off-shoots and then our military can kills them LEGALLY and hold them indefinitely INSIDE the USA or OUTSIDE the USA in prisons as REAL prisoners of war.

Do you really think that a president in the future will stop at ordering the killing of radical muslim Americans living outside the USA? Next INSIDE the the USA and after that the ordering of ANY American considered a terrorist by that president or his enemy.

Congress should DECLARE WAR on Al Qaeda and its off shoots and THEN our military can go after THAT enemy (American citizen or foreigner) who join these groups.

First, I shed no tears for the death of this POS.
But, there should be debate about this whole issue. If he was an American citizen, he was denied due process. He should have been captured and tried for treason.
On the other hand, he was born to Yemeni parents in New Mexico and assumed American citizenship through the (mis-interpretation of the) 14th Amendment. Either way, government screwed up and we need the issue settled. Either impeach Obama for targeting an American citizen denying him Constitutional rights, or declare that he was NOT a citizen and interpet the 14th Amendment the way it was intended.
