Yet Another Twitter Hack? Ohio House Speaker Says Account Was Compromised

COLUMBUS, Ohio (The Blaze/AP) — Aides to the Republican speaker of the Ohio House say his Twitter account was hacked by a person who tweeted support for liberal causes.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that in other phony posts Speaker William Batchelder appeared to criticize Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sihk) or promote former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland.
House Republican caucus spokesman Mike Dittoe says someone who follows Batchelder on Twitter noticed the tweets Monday night. A GOP attorney had the company eliminate the messages.
Batchelder told the Dispatch he was unaware he had a Twitter feed. Dittoe says it’s maintained by caucus staffers to get messages out:
“Well, I won’t do any more of this … Twittering?” he said, turning to Dittoe to make sure he got the terminology correct. “We’ll avoid that at all cost. I didn’t know I had such a device.”
The account, Dittoe said, is accessed by a handful of caucus staffers – many of whom are less than half the speaker’s age – as a way to get out messages. Despite the issues, and his boss’ reservations, Dittoe said Twitter is a valuable way to disperse information, and they will likely restart the account in some form.
News of the breach comes amid a media storm surrounding a lewd photo sent from the Twitter account of a Democratic congressman from New York, Anthony Weiner (WEE’-nur).

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 12:05pmGiven the fact that corporate senior executive accounts are usually the easiest to break into and are normally the most vulnerable because they ‘don’t have to adhere to the rules’, I would expect the accounts of Congressmen are worse. Given that there are 525 ‘Sr. Executives’ who believe that they are above the law, invulnerable, and their lives so public, the email and twitter accounts for most Senators and Congressmen are probably some of the easiest to crack. Let’s see, birth date (wife, kids, etc.), date first elected, pet names (or in the case of Weiner – college co-ed names), hometown, etc. These guys are so dense, they can’t be too complicated. Its just a matter of time that all of them are hacked.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 10:35amWith the advent of technology comes naivety. Some use twitter and facebook without giving thought to how the tweet gets where its going or how it is being handled and by whom. Code breakers are not just government operatives, they exist in industry and in the criminal elements as well. Communications without cloaking is dangerous to say the least. Those who feel safe using these services need to reflect that some of the most sophisticated computers in the world are breached by hackers on a regular basis. Rep.Weiner has stepped in it big time, his reluctance to involve lawenforcement in his claim of being hacked raises red flags that even the LSM cannot ignor.

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 10:12amYou know it‘s kinda funny but I really don’t even know how to twitter. I am disabled yet find myself with more to do each day than I can handle. However it looks like the people we’ve elected to run our government have plenty of time to play with whatever. I didn’t realize the country was in such good shape that we could afford to pay our congress and senate to PLAY.. Actually maybe we‘re better off with them playing because when their doing that at least they’re not harming our country…In 2012 we need to Completely clean house, everyone goes, Everyone..

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 11:17amGood point. Old people aren’t always correct. I’m sorry for my foolish, youthful statement.
So, to correct myself: Older people aren’t instantly correct, and the fact that someone using twitter is “less than half the age” doesn’t make them less credible or relevant. Age is just a number and should never imply wisdom or intelligence as age goes up.
It’s a lesson the Tea Party has taught me many times. :)

Not your fault understand.. but the education system is full of prog/liberals who taint your mind. As you see for yourself that the World is far different from ‘school’ you too will understand. Posted on June 2, 2011 at 12:39pmVery true, very true. Too few people are willing to challenge the beliefs of what is accepted without evidence. You make a great point. Posted on June 2, 2011 at 11:04amThis is concerning, 2 federal employees accounts are “hacked” within a week?
The FBI should be investigating this ASAP, and hopefully the hacker(s) will be exposed and dealt with appropriately, possibly charged with impersonating a “federal official”?

Posted on June 2, 2011 at 12:52pmif it turns out none of these accounts were hacked… can Twitter sue these guys for slander? Their accusations don’t shine to well on the website, despite millions of others users being able to utilize it with great ease and somehow avoid being “compromised”.
If it turns out Weiner is a liar (i know, i know… SOOO hard to imagine that, lol) and we find that this politician wasn’t compromised at all… he’s just defunct of any and all technological know-how… shouldn’t they pay for their wrongful accusations? I wonder why Twitter hasn’t come out and put a kink in their excuses yet.
In the meantime, I’m really not sold on the “hacking” allegations. Weiner’s looks like another moment of stupidity on his part (one in which he may not be able to talk or scream his way out of) and Batchelder’s looks like either carelessness or cluelessness. Here’s an idea Mr Speaker (and all the other dunces in office)… don’t share your personal accounts with every Tom, Dick and Harriet on staff.
