Yikes: Miss Ohio USA Cites Prostitute in ‘Pretty Woman’ as ‘Positive and Accurate’ Depiction of Women During Miss USA Pageant

Beauty contestants aren’t necessarily known for their intellectual prowess, but Miss Ohio’s response Sunday to the question, “Do you think women are depicted in movies and on television in an accurate and positive way?” was so absurd that it’s making national news.

For those who are unfamiliar, “Pretty Woman” is a romantic comedy from the 1990′s where Julia Roberts plays a glamorous prostitute.

“I think it depends on the movie,” she explained.  “I think there are some movies that depict women in a very positive role, and then some movies that put them in a little bit more of negative role.  But by the end of the movie they show that ‘woman power’ that I know we all have.  Such as movie Pretty Woman.  We had a wonderful, beautiful woman, Julia Roberts, and she was having a rough time.  But, you know what, she came out on top, and she didn’t let anybody stay in her path.” [Sic]

As the crowd paused, presumably somewhat confused, the contestant said “thank you,” and beamed.

Not surprisingly, Miss Ohio Audrey Bolte did not win the title of Miss USA.  The award instead went to Rhode Island cellist Olivia Culpo.

“Saying a hooker is a positive depiction of women on screen? Ouch,” one entertainment site summarizes.  “Probably not what the judges were looking for.”

But is it worse than Miss South Carolina’s answer in 2007, when the beautiful contestant struggled to determine why one fifth of Americans cannot find the United States on a world map?

    Was anyone listening to the answer by Miss Georgia? She actually gave her support to New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s decision to prohibit the sale of large sodas in his city. So she, too, prefers the ideologies of communism.

    Then there was the question for Miss Maryland concerning beauty pageants for children. She instantly became defensive, even turning around and looking at the other finalists, and responded on behalf of adult women who compete in ADULT beauty pageants.

    Then there was Miss Nevada who supported the eleven contestants who didn’t know Biden was the USA Vice-President — they were tired, after all.

    Then Miss Ohio slandered me and every other woman who is a child of God.

    But the judges and audience committed the worst slander and blasphemy by crowning Miss Rhode Island who slandered moral children of God, and blasphemed God, by supporting transgender people which, after changing their genders, are actually homosexuals.

    And there you have the Y Generation in all its glory (people born between 1982 and 2003). I‘m from the Babyboom generation and dread the prospect of being alive while Lucifer’s children are in control of what, over the past few decades, has tragically become the post-Republic of the United States of America.

    Oh God, please allow the Lord to come quickly.

If you honestly believe in any form of religous leader but mainly God you would know that He loves all people.       This is the key verse. Jesus forgave her and told her to sin no more. The problem with many people is that they don’t want to even try to stop sinning.

      You who keep saying Jesus loves everyone, well of course He does! That’s why He died for us, to give us the awesome gift of forgiveness. Not to say, “Hey I love you guys! Just keep doing what you are doing, I don’t care because I love you guys!”. That is an inaccurate picture of God’s relationship with us.     What she should have answered?…”Honestly, no…with some exceptions, I do not believe TV and movies present a very accurate and positive image for today’s young woman, especially when it comes to morality and personal responsibility. Sadly, the type of young women idolized in TV and movies today is almost consistently among the unintelligent, promiscuous, or routine abusers of alcohol and drugs…as if this were somehow the type of woman or lifestyle we should ever aspire to be. If I were Miss America, I would be an advocate of young American women deserving better.”

      As an American woman I have always HATED Pretty Woman and the disney tale it spins. A ****** can find a rich man who really really loves her. Really. And her life changes forever and so does his and they live happily ever after. Like any disney princess.

      I also hated that it make it seem like hookers are beautiful. The hookers I have seen in my frequent trips to Camden NJ are not beautiful. They are pitiful.

Yes, the fact that the man is rich adds to the story line but it is not the story line. Do you think that if the moral of the story was to find a rich man to save you, they would have broke them up towards the end? Get a grip lady.

      Ed – First let me get this out of the way. I am not a neo feminist. I’m old enough to be an original feminist. But I’m not. I think feminists did one good thing. They pushed for equal pay for equal work. That’s it. I don’t like or agree with the rest of their man hating agenda.

      Movies are not “just movies” like you think. They can reflect how our society already thinks but they also can change how we think. Movies pushing the envelope of societal norms, which many many of them do, help move people slowly towards accepting things that were considered unacceptable in the past. They are part of how our society evolves. So they aren’t just a movie. And that‘s why I’m concerned about what some movies say to us.

      Oh, and here’s the real end to the story. They did not break up. It ended like a Disney movie just like I said.

      He tries to set her up in an apt. but she refuses and is preparing to leave and go earn a G.E.D. in the hopes of a better life. He goes to her home in a white limo, climbs up the fire escape with a bouquet of roses clutched between his teeth. His leaping from the white limousine, and then climbing the outside ladder and steps, is a visual urban metaphor for the knight on white horse rescuing the “princess” from the tower, a childhood fantasy she told him about. The film ends as the two of them kiss on the fire escape.

      Thanks for the recap but you still haven’t explained where in the movie it points to her wanting to be with him because of his money. You have only assumed that she wants to be with him because of his money. To elaborate on what I said, she would not have broken it off with him at the end (or close to the end if you want to be politically correct) if she was only in it for the money, like you are assuming she was.

      Please read carefully as I will only write once more; in order to analyze something rationally you can’t let your opinions and validations control. When you run around and comment the way you have (hookers are [ugly] and … pitiful”, among others), it tells me that you despise hookers and therefore will despise any credit they are given in any form – which explains such a harsh position you’re taking against something as pointless as “Pretty Woman”. In other words, it wouldn’t matter what the point of the movie was, because it is about a ****** and a rich man, you automatically despise it and are now feeding upon that because of what some pointless barbie said on some pointless TV show; thus wasting my time…

      Other posters here have agreed with me. Someone else even mentioned disney. And the end to the movie, to be PC, is a disney movie ending so I was right.

      I never said she wanted him for his money. I said it’s a disney tale that a h.o.oker can find a rich man to love and marry her. That is how it happened in the movie. He was rich, she was a h.o.oker. I never talked about her motives about her relationship with him. I never said I thought she wanted him for money. You read between the lines something that isn’t there.

      You can stop the condescension to make yourself seem so much smarter and better me. You are the one who is irrational by saying I said things I never did. I am not running around commenting. I am stating what I know to be true. The hookers I have seen in real life while driving through areas where they are and actually meeting some are not pretty. They are drug users and look the part. I do think most hookers are in that category and not beautiful like whatshername in Pretty Woman.

      And you are so wrong about how I feel about h.o.okers. You are not a good judge of character in my case. I value every single human being because we all were created in God’s image even if we stray very far from that image.       There is disagreeement that the Rachab mentioned in the geneology of Christ (Matt. 1) is the same one as in Jericho. In Matthew it says Rahab married Salmon of the Tribe of Judah and produced Boaz and on down the line to Jesus. Other historical and biblical info points to the Rachab from Jericho to be the Rahab who married Joshua and she was ancestress to Huldah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and other prophetesses and prophets. Not Jesus.

      Christian scholars say they are different based on linguistics and textual evidence/

      In the new testament the greek spelling of the harlot Rahab is Ῥαάβ and is always accompanied by the word harlot. Harlot Rahab is in Hebrews 11:31 & James 2:25, besides in the story in the old testament.

      The greek spelling of the Jesus’ ancestor Rahab is Ῥαχάβ and harlot is not mentioned with her name, so the Christian scholars think they are a different Rahab.The Jesus’ ancestor Rahab is in Matthew.

      Jewish legend says that that harlot Rahab of Jericho married Joshua Bin Nun, a descendant of Joseph. Joseph is not a descendent of Jesus according to Matthew.

      I think that is enough proof to give me doubt that they are the same person.

      But even if they are, what point are you trying to make? Any Christian worth his salt knows that God uses the weak to counfound the wise, and redeems men from all sorts of sins. He could very well have used a harlot in the line of Jesus.

      But that does not make being a harlot OK.

      Like everything else, when these contests became more about quick fame and the money, it attracted the same type of woman that “escorts”, you know the high priced and therefor respectable form of prostitution. When fake hair, fake boobs, a fake teeth, fake tan, etc. became the norm the beauty wasn’t even legitimate anymore. Woman who knowingly and purposely use their looks, sexiness and flirtation to get ahead are not much above the average prostitute. And in their hearts they know it.

      Now look at that picture of Liz Taylor when she was younger, with a towell around her head and no makeup on. That is beauty. Or look at Kim Kardashian without all her fancy makeup. She is very pretty. But many stars are not that pretty. It’s all smoke and mirrors.

      Just exactly what a beauty pagent needs, is to feature some fruity dudes, guys dress up like beautiful women competing for the most …. whatever: “Hey I’m Harry Johnson, and I think Julia Roberts is a great role model as herself or as prostitute in Pretty Woman, oh and that hunky Richard fella.” (done with Venus De Milo voice made famous by Jim Carrey)

      Well I guess if people of the same sex are permitted to marry, why not trans gender dudes as constestants in a women’s beauty pageant. It’s sure to be a huge ratings winner. I won’t be watching! At least now one is assured of getting honest brain dead beauty.
