Floyd Mayweather Jr. took the World Boxing Council welterweight title from Victor Ortiz Saturday with a controversial knock-out that left the boxing world reeling.
After Ortiz headbutted Mayweather during the fourth round, Ortiz approached Mayweather, gloves lowered, to apologize. With Ortiz’s guard lowered, Mayweather quickly struck, landing two quick blows, knocking Ortiz down and quickly ending the fight.

“You gotta protect yourself at all times. I got hit with a head-butt, I got hit with elbows. I didn’t cry and complain,” Mayweather said afterward. “I done what I had to do as a fighter. I didn’t say my mouth was split open and cut inside. So, keep it clean. We touched gloves. Once we touched gloves, it’s fight time.”
It wasn’t over even after the fight ended: Mayweather unloaded on HBO commentator Larry Merchant who questioned him on the fairness of his win.
Yahoo! Sports reported:
After Mayweather ended the fight in the closing seconds of round four with a two-punch combination, Merchant, the HBO Pay-Per-View commentator, challenged him over the fairness of his winning blows. Mayweather unloaded with both fists a split-second after the fighters had hugged following a headbutt for which his opponent was deducted a point, and Ortiz was unprotected and unaware when the strikes landed.
Merchant suggested that his tactics may have been either illegal or outside the spirit of the fight game, and then Mayweather vented his ire, referring to the 80-year-old broadcaster by an expletive and barking that he should be fired from his television position.
“You never give me a fair shake, all right, so I am going to do you a favor and let you talk to Victor Ortiz,” Mayweather said. “You never give me a fair shake. You are [expletive] and HBO should fire you. You don’t know [expletive] about boxing. You ain’t [expletive].”
Merchant, however, a veteran of more than 50 years in boxing, got the last laugh with a witty retort to Mayweather, whose victory earned him Ortiz’s World Boxing Council welterweight belt.
“I wish I was 50 years younger,” said Merchant. “I would have kicked your [expletive].”

It’s not sportsmanship to get head butted and cracked in the head with elbows and take it. That’s called dumb. Mayweather defended himself plain and simple. Anyone who has seen any of the Ortiz past knows that he’s a cheap punk who follows in the same path as Mike Tyson. Ortiz should be forever banned from the sport.

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 3:11pmMayweather did what he wanted to do. Not what he should have done. If he was really a champion he would act like it. And he never has. He has no class, but great talent. On technical skill, he will be rated as one of the all time greats. But never a true champion. Ortiz is a dirty fighter, sure. But Mayweather had the choice of whether or not he would stoop to that level, and stoop he did. Doesn’t make him blameless, but labels him as a hothead who will play dirty if he thinks he can get away with it. He doesn’t leave himself out there but takes the easiest path to a win. That is not the hallmark of a real champion. (or at least one the people will stand behind)

Posted on September 19, 2011 at 1:24pmYou know, the MMA honks really bother me. Why does MMA suck so much and why did I stop watching it?
Couple of points:
1) These guys have NO head movement and NO chin. These HS/college wrestlers don‘t work on their stand up and don’t know what a jab is. So, when they go against a good stand up guy with even decent take down defense, they are clueless of what to do. See GSP, Cruz, etc…
2) If you want to talk about controversial ends to fights, look no further than MMA, especially Strikeforce and NOW UFC. How many times do you see an early stoppage, or the ref letting the “fan favorite” get a few extra seconds while he is in fact OUT?
3) and what do strikeforce and UFC have in common now? DANA WHITE, the Vince McMahon of MMA.
Seriously guys, MMA is going in the direction of WWF in the mid-80′s, and not in the direction of Boxing in the Ali era…

You’re a racist pig, and you lower the standards of these boards with your comments. I’m not a Progressive nor a Mayweather fan. I was rooting for Ortiz. However, looking at the advertisements for the fight, I knew Mayweather had the upperhand….Ortiz said something to the effect ‘I’m a a boxer, but I don’t let it define me….I like to surf…..what fighter likes to surf?’ Mayweather? The bravado and fierceness of a fighter you expect. Ortiz didn’t sound like he had as much “heart” as Mayweather. Furthermore, Ortiz (in my opinion) got sucker punched, but CLEARLY Ortiz head-butted Mayweather before they touched gloves. My point? Don’t dish it out, if you can’t take it. Now Mayweather’s tirade after the fight, only shows what a classless pig of fighter he is.
My advice to you? Don’t lower yourself by becoming what you despise.

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 3:32pmThere are an increasing number of racist black attacks on whites in recent years. Hopefully it will be something that whites can learn to be ready for and defend themselves better when it happens. It wouldn’t have helped in this case but when it happens on the streets, if more whites are armed they will be able to just blow away the attackers ending it right there. If blacks think that it is their big chance for payback against whitey, at some point whites will wake up and start fighting back.
Even in the UK it is a huge problem, here is a story of some blacks throwing chestnuts at a white, innocent enough fun one might think, but when the white politely asked them to stop, they stabbed him to death.

BTW, just cause some blacks are violent toward whites doesn’t mean either race is innocent. Some whites are violent towards blacks too. Shouldn’t the course of action be to prosecute the violence of either side? Not pick a side and engage in racial violence? Who cares if the New Black Panthers and the Nazi Skinheads are fighting? Posted on September 18, 2011 at 4:27pmThe whitey being attacked in this case is the announcer. The black involved was disrespectful, not just because he is a lowlife dirtbag but because blacks are continually being told that whitey has it coming, blah blah blah, you have heard it no doubt. And there have been plenty of flash mobs and other attacks that in many cases the media don’t even report the race of those involved, but when it is looked into, it is blacks attacking whites, and in many cases it isn’t a robbery (and as we ALL know since whites have oppressed blacks for hundreds and thousands and millions of years we ALL know that blacks should be excused for robbing whites) just a straight up attack of blacks against a white. It would be front page news as a racist attack if whites attacked blacks that way, are you saying that because it is blacks we just have to accept that is the way they are? That is more racist than acknowledging that blacks are engaging in racist attacks against whites.

After further warning him, he brought the men to the center of the ring and said “let’s go…”. At that point Ortiz should have had his hands up ‘cus the fight was back on. Instead, he tried apologizing and hugging on a man who he is supposed to be trying to hurt.
Report Post »THE FIRST pre-fight instruction is “Protect yourself at all times”.
Victor could not get any offense going against the ultra-slick Mayweather, and is lucky the fight ended when it did, because he was just going to take more punishment if the fight had gone any longer. Even after a 17 month lay-off, Floyd looked in top form, landing check-hooks and lead right hands at will.
Compubox had Mayweather landing an astounding 49% of his power shots. He is truely the best fighter in the game.
As far as his comments to Larry Merchant, I think Floyd was way out of line, although the two have had a real animous toward each other for years now.
The PPV buys were already in the bank, so it made no sense for Floyd to keep promoting at that point.
All he did was make himself look like a thug.

Technically, I guess Mayweather won the fight, but it was a highly tainted win. Ortiz should be granted a re-match by the boxing officials before Mayweather is allowed to fight anyone else. Almost anybody could knock anybody out with two sucker punches like those.
Blacks just keep doing things that the whole world disapproves of.
That head butt by Ortiz WAS purposeful, but it looked like he did it in the heat of passion and frustration, but he DID apologize and when he got hit it looked like he wanted to make further apologetic gestures, but the black resorted to what he knows best: Ghetto tactics popular throughout the hood.

Ortiz doesn’t deserve anything, and if I was Mayweather I wouldn’t fight Ortiz again….no telling if Ortiz is going to cover his gloves in tiger balm or do something else illegal.

@Robert,
“Would you feel the same if Ortiz lowered his guard to taunt Mayweather?”
Absolutely not. In that case the blows would be justified, but that’s not what happened. Ortiz had his hands at his sides and was clearly in apology mode. It looked like he was expecting Mayweather to render some kind of gesture to acknowledge his aplogy, like glove touching to say, “I accept your apology.”
“Aside from the hypothetical, have you ever been head-butted? You’re not exactly feeling very sportsman-like afterwards.”
I’ve been head-butted but not on purpose. It broke my nose, but I didn’t realize it until the fight was over. At the time my only thoughts were to keep pressing. Ortiz was wrong to have butted. He did it on purpose, but he did it in a fit of passion and frustration, and his entire manner revealed very clearly he was sorry for it. It was during this contrite reaction by Ortiz that he was unscrupulously hammered by Mayweather.
This is going to taint Mayweather for the rest of his career, especially since he went ballistic over legitimate questions by the 81 yr old interviewer.

Posted on September 18, 2011 at 2:56pmJust sayin’, this isn’t about your personal proclivity to be a racist. It‘s obvious that you didn’t see the fight, and probably even more than likely that you are clueless about the history of Victor Ortiz. Ortiz thought he could cheay his way to victory, but wound up getting punked like the punk he is by the best pound for pound fighter in boxing.
That’s how we do it in the hood, just sayin’.
