You Can Now Get Your Gay and Lesbian Greeting Cards at Target

Gay marriage may not be legal in all 50 states, but retail giant Target is now making it easier to express your support for the issue with its new line of gay and lesbian greeting cards.
The cards hit store shelves nationwide in June and include covers such as “Mr. & Mr.“ and ”Two very special women, one very special love.”

“Target is focused on diversity and inclusivity,” Target spokesperson Molly Snyder told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. A spokesperson for Carlton Cards, the division of American Greetings that makes the cards, added that Target and Carlton teamed up to make “wedding cards relevant for everyone.”
The greeting card decision follows a controversy two years ago where Target was berated by the gay community for donating $150,000 to MN Forward, a group that was supporting Tom Emmer’s gubernatorial bid in Minnesota. Emmer was criticized for not supporting gay rights. Since then, however, Target has taken decidedly pro-gay actions. For example, the company recently sold gay pride t-shirts on its website and donated a portion of the proceeds to a gay rights group.
“What Target and other marketers have figured out is it’s not a zero-sum game,” Witeck Communications CEO Bob Witeck told the Star Tribune. “The rewards of marketing to gay households are greater than the perceived risks.” Witeck even quantifies it: he says the purchasing power of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community is $790 billion, or about $49,000 per adult.
The greeting card issue is especially relevant as Minnesota residents vote this November on a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

Before Steve Jobs, Apple had a less than 2% market share in selling computers. They weren’t making much of a profit and at the time their competitors, Dell and HP were spinning circles around them. In fact they almost lost their standing in the stock market. I remember when APPL stock was less than $2 and declining and there was talk that there may not be much of a future. It wasn’t until Steve Jobs took over and the ipod and iphone took in a very significant percentage of mp3 player and then later smartphone sales. 2% doesn’t add up in the business world. In fact, if you have followed the company as I have for the past 16 yrs, a lot of people fail to see than Apple today still has a very small percent of computer sales. It’s increased to 9% in recent years (mostly laptop/macbook sales.) The company is depending on iphone sales to continue. They have a 23% market of users. That 23% is what investors are looking at. So explain to me how it’s that less than 2% is bringing in nearly a trillion dollars? That sort of math is exactly how the people in Washington think.

The problem with your assumption, is that Target is not forcing it upon us. Let me put this out there that I am completely against gay marriage, but this has nothing to do with marriage. They are selling cards to a small group of people, what’s wrong with that? Would you be just as mad if they sold a card directed at the Hispanic community? Cards are meant to appeal to a certain crowd. No one is forcing you to buy the card, no one is even forcing you to look at it. And if you really want to boycott Target just because of their business decision that doesnt stay in line with everything you believe, that’s fine.

It’s absurd to hear these incompetent Executives claim homosexuals are so more advanced in education, creativity, marketing, sales and manufacturing, that an amendment banning same sex marriage prevents homosexuals from applying and moving to Minnesota for employment.
