You Won‘t Believe This Umpire’s Terrible Call

Granted, it’s not the worst call we’ve ever seen, but it’s pretty bad.
When third baseman Jack Hannahan hit a flyball into foul territory during last night’s game between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians, Yankees outfielder Dewayne Wise leaped into the bleachers to make the catch.
The third base umpire Mike DiMuro, in all his holy wrath, called Hannahan out. The only problem: Wise didn’t catch the ball.
Obviously, DiMuro should have checked to see if the ball was caught before he made the call. But, for reasons unknown, he didn’t. Oh, and to add insult to injury, Hannahan, who knew he wasn’t out, got tossed from the game after he challenged DiMuro’s miserable call.
Of course, after reviewing the tape, DiMuro had no choice but to own up to his huge mistake.
“I went out on the ball and saw the ball into his glove in the stands. He disappeared into the stands, and I believed that the ball was in his glove. Now that I see the tape, it’s obvious that the ball fell out of his glove. In hindsight, I should have asked him to show me the ball,” he told a pool reporter.
You think?
Look, we’re not saying MLB should — God forbid — adopt the NFL’s replay system. As mentioned before on The Blaze, bad calls are part of the game. All we’re saying is this: Because baseball is a sport that stands on tradition, it isn’t going to change its system anytime soon. Therefore, it’s not just our duty, nay, our moral obligation to point out when umpires make bush league mistakes — it’s our only recourse.

That’s how the game is played. Like it or not.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 2:28pmI think this is a glaring example of a lack of character and integrity on the part of the left fielder who went along with the call of the ump eventhough he knew the call was wrong.
The fact that the ump made a wrong call is part of the game. People are not infallible and mistakes will be made but the left fielder made an even greater mistake in his life example of lying. That was an intentional decision to do wrong.
His example is even worse because other people will see and emulate his example.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:09pmIf an umpire makes a bad call and it’s challenged (by a player/coach), that umpire can ask the other umpires for their take. After all, there‘s so many angles and one person can’t see them all. We’re involved in American Legion baseball, and the good/decent umps would request another ump’s assistance if a call comes into question. Unfortunately the request must come the ump making the call and too many are unwilling to admit they were in error.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 8:17pmWhen an umpire makes a bad call(other than strikes/balls) that is challenged by a player through the coach, he may request the other umps to confer. These so many angles, one person may not be in a position to see fully. I have no doubt the plate umpire saw what had happened, but he can’t say anything unless asked by the umpire making the initial call. We’re involved with American Legion ball and the good/decent umpires are willing to confer. Unfortunate;y, too many umps are unwilling to admit they may be wrong.

If there’s any game that could be managed entirely through technology, it’s the snooze-fest known as baseball.

What gets me is the calling of balls and strikes. The other day, I saw the ump call a ball, a strike and then a ball. All three were at least a ball’s width ourside the plate and all at knee level. The next one was below the knees, but in the center of the plate and was hit over the “fence.”

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 10:39am@Brensdad, just because something is old, doesn’t make it bad. It’s nonsense to compare a tradition of a game to wagons or leaching. Don’t argue like a liberal.
@Chalkdust, I happen to dislike baseball, not because I don’t understand it, but because it simply isn’t an interest of mine. However, there’s non need to insult football. It is a highly complex game and probably more difficult to “understand” than baseball.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 1:50pmWe can debate the instant replay issues all day long, but one thing that I think would help would be some accountability by the umpire/referee staffs in all sports, both college and professional. You’ve noticed some sports now have a spokesman or some type of representative for the officials in the booth or ready to comment. They need to make it mandatory for the officials who called the game to address the media immediately after the game. Sometimes you will see the head official there, but you need to have the whole crew available to address any calls made during the game. No, they are not perfect, but if they had to have transparency and answer questions about what they saw and why they made the call I think we’d see an improvement in the quality of the officials we see calling these games. These are adults that choose their professions and should be able to handle the scrutiny just as well as anyone else. Too many of them have an attitude like our elected officials and think they are above reproach. They throw anyone who dares question them out of the game.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 2:57pmThat is a good point. We hold the players accountable for how they conduct themselves on the field but when an ump makes an obvious mistake, we dont question that mistake. Im sure one of the other umpires saw what happened so why didnt they overturn the call?

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 1:35pmI find most professional sports officials to be extremely accurate, nobody is perfect. With a 160 game season, they should be able to recover from it. Replay is fine for football, a short season and 1 gane a week make it possible without dragging the game down to painfully slow pace. Baseball is slow enough as it is. Replay review from the playoffs on and keep the regular season as it is.

Posted on June 27, 2012 at 1:18pmA couple of weeks ago in a Cardinal game there was a runner on first and second, no outs. The batter lined to the pitcher who “caught it”, the umpire called him out so the pitcher then threw the ball to first to double the runner off and then threw to second to double that runner off for the triple play..Wahoo, right? NO!
The umpires got together and determined that the pitcher did not catch the ball, which he did, and called only the batter out on the force out at first, but then let the other runners advance to second and third respectively.
My point is that since the first call had a direct effect on the pitchers actions of throwing it to first, the play should have stood whether he caught the ball or not because had the umpire not called the hitter out on the line drive, the pitcher would have thrown to third or second for the force out and then to first for the double play. Instead, the two runners scored in the inning and we were down 2-0 in the top of the first.
I love baseball and don’t want to change anything because the “human error” is part of the game and sometimes you get the call and sometimes you don’t. My message to the umpires: Just make the call and never change your mind regardless of what the camera says…it’s fine to admit it later after the game, but NEVER CHANGE YOUR MIND!

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 8:20amYou know Chet, It’s an odd thing that we have video that, in effect, shows a player succeeding through a lie of omission. He knows he missed it and so do we. The idea that a player has no responsibility to play fair is nonsense. It shows a lack of respect for the game and sets a poor example in life for anyone who looks to sports figures as heros. It diminishes us. It is a rather liberal stance to say the end justifies the means and is distasteful to see it in this most American of sports.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 10:01amThe idea that a player has no responsibility to correct a bad call is part of the game. You show a lack of respect for the game when you imagine that it should be played according to the rules of some other sport. In baseball what the umpire says happened is what happened. Sometimes they make bad calls. Those can help you or hurt you. There’s no rule that you have to do the umpire’s job for him, but there is a rule against arguing with him once he makes a call. Provoking opposing players into getting thrown out of the game is also part of the game. Baseball is a game for grownups, unlike other team sports, which are for overgrown children. Sportsmanship is optional. Adults are allowed to say mean things to each other, but they aren’t allowed to beat each other up. Adults are expected to control their tempers and follow rules. Adults know that following the same rules as the other team is the only realistic form of fair play, because the idea of actual fairness is a fiction for ignorant children. It’s not fair that some people will never play baseball very well no matter how much they want to or how hard they try. It’s not fair that some guys work hard for ten years to get to the major leagues and then get injured in their first game so badly that they can never play again. It is fair that if you’re getting paid by team, you help them win games instead of doing the job that the umpire is getting paid for.
