FBI, DHS Warn of Anarchist Extremists at Upcoming Political Conventions

The FBI along with the Department of Homeland Security are warning law enforcement agencies across the U.S. to be prepared for plots by “extremists” to disrupt the upcoming political conventions, including using what officials described as acid-filled eggs, Fox News reports.

A joint FBI-DHS bulletin issued Wednesday also warned that protesters may try to cause chaos by blocking roadways, shutting down transit systems and using improvised explosive devices like Molotov cocktails. It almost sounds like they are describing your average Occupy rally, doesn’t it?

The bulletin specifically mentions a group of “anarchists” from New York City who may be planning to invade some of the events and block surrounding bridges.

Anarchists “see both parties as the problem,” so both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions are prime targets for them, a federal law enforcement official told Fox News.

The RNC will begin on Monday in Tampa, Fla., pending a potential hurricane, and the DNC is set to open a week later in Charlotte, N.C.

“FBI and DHS assess with high confidence anarchist extremists will target similar infrastructure in Tampa and Charlotte, with potentially significant impacts on public safety and transportation,” according to the law enforcement bulletin. “Extremists will likely use secure communication methods and social networking sites, Internet chat rooms, message boards, and mobile devices such as smart phones to coordinate and facilitate violence or criminal activity.”

The joint bulletin, titled “Potential For Violent or Criminal Action By Anarchist Extremists During The 2012 National Political Conventions,” says anarchist extremists likely don’t have the capability to overcome heightened security measures set up by the conventions themselves. In addition, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said Tuesday that fences have been established around “some of the more attractive government targets.”

Instead, extremists could target nearby infrastructure, including businesses and transit systems, according to Wednesday’s bulletin.

The bulletin mentions possible violent tactics anarchist extremists could employ, including the use of molotov cocktails or acid-filled eggs.

In August 2008, federal authorities arrested a man who was planning to use a molotov cocktail during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. In addition, authorities executed four search warrants and arrested eight others for planning to disrupt the convention, according to a 2010 FBI intelligence assessment posted online.

On Tuesday, Tampa police confiscated bricks and pipes found on a rooftop several blocks away from the site of the Republican convention. Graffiti associated with the anarchist movement was also found. Castor called the discovery “disconcerting but … not surprising.”

The bulletin issued Wednesday notes that in 2008, anarchists discussed trying to shut down roads and skyways in St. Paul.

In addition, the bulletin discusses anarchists’ use of social media to inform each other of law enforcement actions and positions.

Even though activists associated with the Occupy Wall Street movement are planning to converge on both conventions to protest what one OWS group called “this political system that only works for the 1%,” the bulletin issued Wednesday makes no mention of Occupy Wall Street — focusing instead on “extremist” activities.

“We have said all along that the vast majority of individuals coming to the Tampa Bay area to demonstrate will do so peacefully but there is no doubt that there is a small percentage that will come bent on destruction and disruption, and those are the individuals that we will deal with very quickly,” Castor told reporters Tuesday.

Both conventions have been designated a “National Special Security Event” by the U.S. Secret Service, which means they will lead the security detail at the events in coordination with federal, state and local law enforcement.

The Tampa Police department has actually asked for help from other police departments around the state to help cover the massive security needed for the Republican convention. Congress has allotted agencies $50 million for security costs at the Tampa and Charlotte conventions.

“Anarchist extremism,” as the FBI calls it, is nothing new and the agency has warned of such extremists during global summits and other larger events in the U.S.

However, there is “no credible threat” related to international terrorism, a federal law enforcement official told Fox News, but added that these types of big events are “attractive targets” for terrorists.

    If the protesters throw acid filled eggs and gasoline fire bombs this should be considered attempted first degree murder. Anybody threatened with either of these lethal weapons has the right to defend their selves with lethal force. It is way past time to stop cuddling these criminals and shoot to kill if they throw the above mentioned devices that are meant to cause serious injury and/or death.
    If Biden shows up the GOP can use him for free entertainment instead of having to hire a comic.

      Are these “eggs” chicken eggs or plastic eggs? Aren’t chicken eggs mostly calcium? I would think they would dissolve as soon as you poured in the acid and tried to hot glue the hole. Also, isn’t throwing regular chicken eggs at cops somewhat common at these disturbances? Will a cop be prosecuted for shooting an anarchist if it turns out the “egg wasn’t loaded”?

      most prosecutions for “terrorism”, gun law and explosives law violations, have been because of an “informant” that encouraged the action in the first place. the FBI and ATF use this to bulk up thier numbers because they can’t find anyone breaking the law in a big enough way to make the papers.

    This is such a shame. Why oh why couldn’t this convention be in another state? More New Yorkers, Biden showing up, OWS, etc. just to bait and stir up more crap in Florida. There should be enough respect for the RNC and the DNC to let each have their own conventions in peace. Headlines next week will be all about the uneducated, racist, rednecks in Florida when as usual it will mainly be the Yankees causing problems.

      I don’t understand why money is spent on conventions anyway–with the technology we have today, an internet conference could be held and voting take place online. Why subject innocents to the juvenile behavior of idiots on the streets?

      We need to grow up as a country, get back to basics, return to God and love and help our neighbor (unless they’re too stupid to love back).

      @OLDASDIRT Ron Paul has fought for our Constitutional rights for the whole 10 years that he has been in Congress..He is quite honestly the only one that I know of that has..He has told us the truth..when everyone else has lied to us..Now think about this..if you were a Congressman..and you were the only one who was there to stand for the people and the Constitution..and everyone else was in it for what they could get out of it and went about their business of making themselves kings and queens and voting themselves raises and getting a boatload of retirement..What would you think if you really cared and placed a portion of your pay back in the coffers..and worked ferverently to expose the taking over of your country..Now you are up against people who oppose you..but the public whom you are trying to help..likes getting dumped on..They don’t even realize it..So what do you do?       There is more, like ballot stuffing in Arizona, and much more. In Massachusetts they sent forms to delegates saying they had to sign stating they would vote for Romney on the first round or face perjury charges, direct violation of 42 USC 1971 (b) Intimidation, threats, or coercion. google it.

      It is because of these things that Romney will not likely get support from Paul supporters in the general election and show the GOP has gotten just as bad as the Democrats in election fraud.

      PDW and all the rest of the blind. I know that Ron Paul’s chances of getting the nomination are not high, but there is still a chance and only the blind think differently. With that being said, if Romney gets the nomination, and his chances are high, Ron Paul will likely not endorse him. Paul supporters will most likely look to Gary Johnson, who is on the ballot in all fifty states. There is the third party candidate that all of you should be worried about. Romney will not win as he does not fire up the base. All projections using Republican models are wrong. I believe Johnson will get the support to put him in the debates and then he will get a good percentage of Republicans and Independents that are not keen on Romney. The problem? The GOP establishment is not good at picking candidates!! Even all of you are disappointed with the GOP pick and profess continually that you have to hold your nose as Romney stinks so badly. But, do not look at reality, keep listening to your establishment media gods with star glazed eyes and give Obama another four. I myself, I am a Conservative Libertarian Republican loyalist, I will write in Paul.

      Coming from you, The Jerk, I am hesitant. I think the Far Left / Obama people have an orchestrated plan to squelch the normal re-action to violence with greater reaction. I fear the Far Left is baiting the “normal ” Americans to over-react so that the Obama types can squash , intimidate, and prosecute their ” opponents.” Have never felt this way about ANY administration of either party.
